For so many reasons.
13456469, felt staged.. but Jada didn’t laugh at the joke so maybe Will
Posted by legsdiamond, Sun Mar-27-22 09:58 PM
felt like it would be a long night if he didn’t protect her honor after laughing

Definitely created a buzz for the Oscars so ionno what to believe.
13456470, naw that wasnt staged at all

13456471, i respect it. Will back up after about 3 years of Ls.

13456472, No. That was a massive L after 3 yrs of Ls
Posted by Sofian_Hadi, Sun Mar-27-22 10:03 PM
He made himself look like a dumbass. Rock ate the slap and made a funny ass joke after. Will Smith is still a dumb cornball. He's achieved Super CornBall status now.
13456474, I agree that it is a massive L for Smith
Posted by calij81, Sun Mar-27-22 10:07 PM
Does he stay for the entire ceremony now? That would be weird and awkward.

Will initially laughs at the joke and then decides that he needs to course correct and sucker punch/slap Rock. Which Rock takes in such stride that people assume that it was all staged.

Will better hope he wins tonight because if he doesn’t, he is never going to win now and may find it hard to get acting jobs after that.
13456477, This is the weirdest shit I've ever seen. Lmao
Posted by Sofian_Hadi, Sun Mar-27-22 10:10 PM
They just gave him an Oscar. Not to be a lame but if any of us did that we'd be arrested or escorted out. He's having a mental breakdown.

Hit a comedian after they made a joke about them, they would be escorted out and possibly arrested.

If this is okay and people are cool with this, a trans person or someone dating a trans person can attend a Chappelle show and just hit him for not liking his trans joke, sit back down like nothing happened and the show just continues on? Not to make this about Chappelle and his trans jokes but just using that as an example.
13456796, If somebody punched Dave onstage, Dave is scrapping

Dave is also about 100 pounds of muscle heavier than Chris Rock. No one is trying that shit.

Pretty sure this is a once in a lifetime thing. I don’t expect any more comics to get slapped by anybody

IMO Rock likely didn’t know Jadas crewcut was due to a medical issue.

Smith in turn likely wouldn’t react that way to Rocks same joke if Jadas haircut were simply a haircut.

It reminds me of a story, of a man who meets a young girl seated on a couch with her dress billowed up, obscuring her legs, so he says playfully, hi little girl, where are your legs…and the girl actually has no legs and starts crying at his rudeness.

Of course Smiths narcissism came into play as well especially during that speech. How embarrassing. “I’m just like the Williams father, because I resort to violence quickly over words.”
13456516, Agreed.

To project that he has it all figured out and dude has turned out to be one of the messiest dudes out there.

Like he gets up there and makes a speech about how he is a river for God when it's really that he is dude who feels like he is a butt of jokes because his wife embarrassed him.

We will hear him for weeks describing it in flowery ornate language when it's really not that deep. It's the same messy shit that goes on in so many relationships.

You basically aligned yourself with the same crackas you tried to diss. Im assuming you will add Dave Chappelle, Ricky Gervais, Larry David, etc to the list of comedians you'd like to see physically assaulted because lame simps cant take a joke. Will Smith isnt some tough guy. He's an idiot that made himself look like a lame. I guarantee if The Rock or someone bigger had made that joke Will Smith would have sat his entanglement ass in the chair and not said a word.

Posted by Cocobrotha2, Mon Mar-28-22 11:09 AM
Alot of comedians have been complaining for years that college students have gotten so "sensitive" that they don't do college tours anymore. Chappelle's been going through it with the transgendered community for a minute now and then there's everything swirling Joe Rogan (more about his podcast than his actual standup but he's still a comedian to me).

Most of the controversies with comedy have been about comedians "punching down" on oppressed people. Rock "punched up" and got slapped.

"At a campaign rally in Las Vegas, Trump said of a protester, “I’d like to punch him in the face.” As security guards escorted the protester out of the rally, Trump mocked him, saying, “He’s smiling. Having a good time.” He then reminisced about being able to get away with violence: “There’s a guy, totally disruptive, throwing punches. We’re not allowed to punch back anymore. I love the old days. You know what they used to do to guys like that when they were in a place like this? They’d be carried out on a stretcher, folks.” Trump also called the protester “nasty as hell.” CNN reported that the man did not appear to fight with the security guards taking him outside."

13456542, I saw a CNN anchor compare Jada and a Supreme Court nominee
Posted by Sofian_Hadi, Mon Mar-28-22 07:01 AM
So black and white people are both taking this to a ridiculous level. She tried to compare Jada Pinkett and Ketanji Brown Jackson because of the importance of hair on the public stage for black women. Shit is not that deep. It was a joke.
13456517, He’s gotta talk to rock afterward. Everyone is fair game at these things
Posted by Cold Truth, Mon Mar-28-22 01:27 AM
Learning the reason for her hair definitely makes the anger make sense, except he clearly laughed at the joke.

I’m really not with anyone trying to shit on his role in their relationship, or shitting on him for defending her. But he definitely shouldn’t have done it at that time, or in that way.

If anything, he needed to talk to him about it afterward.
13456520, i might look at this differently if he didn't laugh at the joke
Posted by Mynoriti, Mon Mar-28-22 02:32 AM
its possible, maybe even likely, that he didn't initially get that the joke was about her hair, and was just kinda laughing along politely, and it came to him, when he saw Jada's reaction, however for such a reaction, he would then have to assume that Rock knows she has a condition and is choosing to mock it.. and i don't think he had enough processing time to get there, so it seems he just overcompensated, because HE knows he has a condition and he knows he just fucked up

Plus if his whole thing is just 'keep my wife's name out your mouth', period... yeah that doesn't play either because again, he was laughing. (that's just shit you say in the moment tho)

obv he handled this thing badly, and its funny because if i had to guess, the three of them will hash this out, but it's all gonna take on a life of its own, with everything from a billion think pieces, scold tweets, and anti cancel culture stuff...with everyone from the view to ben shapiro needing to weigh in.. the whole gamut
13456689, Yea I think you are right re: processing time, etc.
Posted by Brew, Mon Mar-28-22 11:42 AM
Lot of people, myself included for a brief moment, were hammering him for laughing at first but your point about it possibly being simply a product of his being polite, processing, then reacting puts that part of the situation into the proper perspective IMO.

And I think you're also right that the above can be true, while the "he overreacted" responses to the whole thing can also be true. I stand in that line.

But ... his processing fell short when he won the oscar a half hour later and didn't apologize to CR lol. I'm sure they'll hash it out but he had enough time by then to realize he'd fucked up and should've at least acknowledged Rock in his otherwise-brutal speech.

That's pretty much what i've learned from this thread and looking at twitter today.

Slapping a comedian is cancel culture. Advocating for assaulting an entertainer on stage for a joke is some Trump shit. Dumb people will ABSOLUTELY try to imitate what Will Smith did if a comedian attempts to make fun of them. "Pulling a Will Smith." The Oscars are dumb hypocrites for letting him just chill and enjoy the rest of the show AND let him go up and give a dumb rambling speech about love.

How did he put that shit behind him THAT fast that he stayed to get his award and then dance and sing with random people afterwards. And these same people are singing and dancing right along with him, standing ovations and shit.

It's a shit show.

(It's not like the right wouldn't just make something up if this didn't happen - but this is in HD - maybe even 4k.)

Why this didn't surprise me: Will Smith has been so rich and so famous for so long and is talking that (crazy to me) self help and enlightenment talk that *I feel* (without evidence) that it's a scam people run on themselves as a coping mechanism to actually suppress stuff.

A single slap here isn't the end of the world.
Will looks like he can't control his emotions.

But this just doesn't seem like the right format.

And there are ways to make fun of people that isn't necessarily mean spirited humor.

The Oscar room also seems like the weirdest room too. Like the room will go along with anything that is going on stage and laugh or support without knowing what they are doing. Like the way they gave Roman Polanski a standing ovation.

If black guy smacks white guy, social media outrage might be less but career blowback might be worst.

If black guy smacks, woman, definitely bad all around.

If black woman, smacks guy. Not as bad social media, probably very bad career wise.

If white woman smacks black guy, bad social media, maybe not so much career wise.

I could be wrong but what does any of it prove or mean?

13456681, CAUGHT ON TAPE: Chris Rock Backstage After Being Slapped :-/

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SGmZRWb4aj0

Post-Fight Thoughts:

1. He wouldn't have slapped Jerry Seinfeld (Career gone.)
2. Or Ellen (Hate Crime, "Domestic" Violence, Career gone.)
3. Or THE Rock (Ass totally kicked.)
4. Damn, why it gotta be two Black Men? :-/
5. "When Keepin' It Real Goes Wrong" #WWPD (What Would Pac Do?)
6. I didn't hear a "slap sound" though (Just a "Mic Bump") Hmm...
7. Did Will's hand ever *Really* connect? #SloMoCamNeeded #ALIthough :-/
8. Why they both smiling and how did Rock never rub his face?
9. They're both actors so it's probably "staged" (Will "laughed" at the joke at first...)
10. We gonna be talking about this shit for years.......

Assuming it's real, I think once Will saw Jada's face and heard the crowd's reaction, he was immediately thrown into a "Damn, I'm Never Gonna Live This Down If I Don't Get Gangsta" moment -- Which was further amplified by Rock's Oscar jokes on *Both* of them years ago. Will probably feels like he's always been living in Pac's Shadow and didn't wanna hear Jada's Mouth later, so he probably felt like "Damned if I do, Damned if I don't......" (But Damn, even *SUGE* didn't slap a n!gga at The Source Awards........) :-/
13456683, Will did appear to hold in a smile as he walked away
Posted by Mynoriti, Mon Mar-28-22 11:19 AM
i def at first thought it was staged for that reason

Im black and i teach at a school for at risk black teenagers and the amount of fights and MURDERS we have that have literally started over words is mind boggling. That mentality you have is one of the reasons black violence and death is at such a high level. Its not tough to do the shit he did and its not white people shit to not resort to violence if someone isn't physically attacking you. You're a moron.
13456727, nah it's WPS to think words can't get you touched
Posted by Mafamaticks, Mon Mar-28-22 01:04 PM
The concept should be don't talk reckless to people who have the ability to physically assault you.

the key word is STARTED. you can't blame somebody for how they react.

I'm not saying Will is 100% right, but when Will finally snaps at jokes that you participated in, you can't go "violence isn't the answer" after niggas spent the last few years laughing at his expense

It's super possible that something reckless you say, could get your jaw tapped. I have two sons and that's what I teach them. I actually think Chris Rock is one of the most down-to-earth people in Hollywood. He's like a regular person who happens to be famous, understand the concept of everyday, working class people feeling completely separate from the "rich" and seems to relate more to the former. Will doesn't seem like that kind of person to me. He's disconnected. This is why he'll say shit like "just make a decision and your life will change." Whereas Chris Rock would say something along the lines of your bills not stopping because of a decision.

I say that to say them niggas not about to kick it like that over beers. Will gon talk some fake deep spiritual shit about the power of love and healing and Chris gon talk the reality of his jaw healing from that slap.
13456725, The whole point of hosting shows like the Oscars, GG, and Espys
Posted by allStah, Mon Mar-28-22 12:59 PM
is to too roast the audience. Everyone knows that.

What Will Smith did was unprofessional and inhumane, and he deserves
a serious asswhooping.

You don’t slap or touch someone over an award show, especially an
award show that is designed to poke fun at its members.

The Oscars used to be a show and award of substance, but now its
just as insignificant as all the other award shows.

Slapping a man is a very demeaning act, and it is worse than a punch.
Much respect to Chris Rock for continuing on with the show, and making sure
that Questlove was properly honored.

If I were an entertainer I would best the shit out of him for Chris. A dude focked

about having threesomes and hitler memorabilia. ...Yeah, because

They even made fun of Lebron’s hairline last night at the Oscars.

for Questlove.

I am so reminded when they won the Grammy, Moby said something slick that kind of distracted from the moment.

I didn't watch 15's speech until this morning and it was deeply genuinely moving and got me misting up (and was so much more honest then WIll Smith's emotional speech).

I think its a brand worth embracing though, dudes have been quietly doing great things and building a tremendous legacy while all these stars around them might be more visible but burn out well before they do.

The Daily Beast

‘The View’s’ Sunny Hostin Calls Out Will Smith’s ‘Toxic Masculinity’

Matt Wilstein

Mon, March 28, 2022, 12:37 PM

The hottest topic in the country was also the number one “Hot Topic” on The View Monday morning. But not all of the co-hosts agreed about how much blame Will Smith deserved for smacking comedian Chris Rock in the face on live television during the Oscars.

Moderator Whoopi Goldberg, a former Oscar winner and host, reserved her judgment on the incident until the end of the show’s opening segment, ceding the stage to her co-hosts, including Joy Behar, whose first reaction was, “Comedians are in danger everywhere.”

Ana Navarro and Sunny Hostin took the situation even more seriously, calling Smith’s actions what they were.

“Hitting somebody is a crime, it is the crime of assault on national TV,” Navarro said. As “lame” as Rock’s joke about Jada Pinkett Smith’s lack of hair (due to alopecia) might have been, she added, “nothing—nada—zero condones violence in this form.”

“I was embarrassed for Will, I was horrified for Chris Rock,” Hostin added, noting that Smith apologized to the Academy and his fellow nominees, but not the man he hit. “I thought Chris was the one that deserved an apology for taking the high road.”

“I think Will was immature, I think he was childish and he was violent,” she continued. “That’s something we tell our children not to do, our children would be suspended from school for doing something like that.”

Hostin ultimately called Smith’s actions a “show of toxic masculinity,” suggesting that the actor may have “felt emasculated” by the jokes that host Regina Hall made at the expense of his marriage earlier in the show as well. “That is not a show of love,” she said, quoting Smith’s acceptance speech, “this is a show of violence.”

Goldberg meanwhile, appeared to be making some excuses for Smith’s behavior, noting that his anger had obviously “built up” after many years of jokes about his family. “I think he overreacted,” she said. “I get it. Not everybody acts the way we would like them to act under pressure. Some people just snap, and he snapped.”

At the same time, she said it was “remarkable” and “wonderful” that Rock “did not take it to that other place it could have gone,” adding, “I don’t know if they spoke or apologized or not. All I know is sometimes you get to a point and you behave badly. I myself have behaved badly on occasion.”

And when Hostin said she was “surprised” Smith “was not escorted out” and instead received a semi-standing ovation when he won his first Oscar—and wondered aloud if the Academy will let him keep his award, Goldberg pushed back.

“We’re not going to take that Oscar from him,” Goldberg said, apparently speaking for the Academy. “There will be consequences I’m sure, but I don’t think that’s what they’re going to do, particularly because Chris said, ‘Listen, I’m not pressing any charges.’”
13456775, That's it.

Posted by Mynoriti, Tue Mar-29-22 02:50 AM
i side eyed what appeared to be a kind of holding-it-in smirk on his face when he walked way after the slap but..

why on the night where he's about to receive the highest honor of his acting career would Will smith decide to pull a WWE stunt?

one that makes him... a guy who's pretty universally liked, look pretty terrible

and then all but spoil/soil such important moments for Quest, and the William's sisters.

Chris Rock can suddenly act?

I know a lot of people are saying this is fake but haven't seen any logic behind it other than people saying it looks fake.

13456813, the Oscars haven’t been this popular in 20 years

its great publicity for the Oscars

It ruins the moment for Richard Williams recognition

It ruins the first Black produced Oscars

Then Will walks back calmly with a smirk knowing Rock won’t retaliate? Shit was staged.

Posted by Amritsar, Tue Mar-29-22 08:36 AM
Esp When you consider the history of stand up. The environment we are in now deems this act itself not that big a deal I guess.

It feels like we are headed down a dark path with especially stand up comedy. I’ll let you make your own grim predictions on the precedent being set here.

13456815, I dont know why any comedian would agree to host or present again
Posted by Sofian_Hadi, Tue Mar-29-22 08:47 AM
After they let him remain in the audience, chill for rest of the show, accept an award, danced at the after parties, and allowed him to give rambling five min speech. Oscars have major decisions to make. People are making excuses for Will Smith but the stand up comics, outside of a couple, seem to be in agreement on how fucking ridiculous it is that nothing was done during or after.
13456829, he should have his oscar revoked and be banned from the oscars
Posted by Reeq, Tue Mar-29-22 09:14 AM
including any future consideration for any awards.

i dont know if it should be indefinitely or for like 10 years but it should be pretty substantial.

im not even someone who is all up in arms with the hot takes and reaches invoking domestic violence against women or potential manslaughter or whatever.

but they have to set a clear precedent. you just cant hit someone at the show. especially coming up on stage and hitting the host. that should be the biggest no no in the code of conduct (and probably one they never expected to ever have to address).
13456840, This is a perfectly level headed response.
Posted by Sofian_Hadi, Tue Mar-29-22 09:59 AM
I'm not one of those "but he could have killed him with that punch" either. But i agree, you have to set the standard of "you cannot walk on stage and physically hit a presenter." I know we live in weird times after the Trump years but we cant just become numb to crazy shit.
13456846, Revoking the Oscar opens up a can of worms
Posted by Cocobrotha2, Tue Mar-29-22 10:29 AM
I think a fair punishment I've seen mentioned is not letting Will present next year (winner's usually get to present an award the following year).

Or ban him from the show for a couple years.

I'd assume anything he creates in the future is going to get quietly disregarded for a long time.

But you start stripping Oscars for THIS and you're going to have to explain why slapping a host is more egregious than using your power in the industry to harass, intimidate and rape women.

Like somehow the integrity of the show is more important than the integrity of the industry the show celebrates.

13456862, an important distinction is he did it at the actual award event
Posted by Reeq, Tue Mar-29-22 11:11 AM
that the code of conduct covers.

like if the heisman winner punches one of the presenters...im not sure he gets to keep that trophy lol.

>that the code of conduct covers.
>
>like if the heisman winner punches one of the presenters...im
>not sure he gets to keep that trophy lol.

That's a pretty good summation. I had a problem with the Oscar committee taking the award away at first because they still gained viewership from having Will accept the award and give his speech, but him violating the standards while the show took place should be reason enough to give him whatever punishment they deem acceptable.

I have to think the folks behind the scenes completely hate how much the smack is overshadowing anything and everything that took place on Sunday.
13456864, True, it was at the ceremony.. so restricting access to it in the future
Posted by Cocobrotha2, Tue Mar-29-22 11:38 AM
seems more appropriate IMO.

If they'd denied Will in the moment, I still wouldn't have agreed but I could understand a snap emotional decision against him for making an emotional decision himself.

After the fact, I think you have time to be more nuanced and find the appropriate punishment.

13456880, i thought the slap was weak, but this is a cucked response.

theres plenty of stories/footage of people getting roughed up or knocked out tryna step to a performer.

13456959, Same here. And this is exactly my concern
Posted by Amritsar, Wed Mar-30-22 09:16 AM
the overwhelming majority of stand up happens at the smaller venues which have little to no security in my experience as well

13457010, for major comedians like Rock & Chappelle they definitely have security...

you can't even have a cell phone at those shows
13457035, Right. I said that.
Posted by Ryan M, Wed Mar-30-22 05:20 PM
Major venues - Staples Center, etc. or for A-list comics where they take phones - yes, there's security as there would be at a music venue.

But comedy clubs? Nope. No security. At best you have a comedian who works there to get spots - and they don't get paid to intervene with a fan who rushes the stage.

13456947, There is a changing cultural attitude toward stand up
Posted by Amritsar, Wed Mar-30-22 06:28 AM
The space that stand up comedians have historically occupied is… undergoing a change. That’s the crux of my personal concern here.

I agree that Rock was never in any real danger. But the concern is bigger than this singular incident. Stand up comedy happens in Venues across this country every day.

I see nothing that would stop an audience member at one of these smaller venues from doing the same thing will did.

The Columbia incident with Nimesh Patel comes to mind: https://youtu.be/tcICkrR6AYY

If Chris knew about Jada's alopecia and her feelings about it, and made the joke anyway, that's (IMO) out of pocket and unnecessarily cruel.

If Chris—like me and many others—didn't know about her condition, he made a lame joke about her haircut. Given the situational context of the celebrity roast-fest Oscars, I don't think that's a slappable offense.

Because Will acted in the moment and spoke with his hands first, he didn't have time to confront Chris and find out whether further action was warranted.

and it happen right before Quest got his award.

Go back a couple decades when Marlon Brandon sent the Native American to protest, she said in an interview they had six security men holding John Wayne back from trying to get at her.

https://www.thefocus.news/culture/john-wayne-sacheen-littlefeather/

I know Will was in the audience and in the front but even after the slap Will was still there and went to after parties, like he knew nothing would happen.
13456988, in slow motion you can see Rock anticipate the slap

13456992, It does look like he's bracing for it
Posted by Lurkmode, Wed Mar-30-22 01:04 PM

The first time I heard about it, my first thought was it's a fake slap for ratings.
13456996, this was the other video that confirmed my suspicion
Posted by legsdiamond, Wed Mar-30-22 01:19 PM
I will say the barking is what made me think it wasn’t fake..

but the actual slap never looked natural. The way Rock chilled and stepped towards Will while exposed gives it away.

13457002, Damnnn I forgot about the Jerry Lawler/ Andy Kaufman slap
Posted by Lurkmode, Wed Mar-30-22 01:38 PM
That was all I saw at first was the slap without the rest, and it didn't look natural.
13457000, that's just a flinch in the moment.
Posted by tariqhu, Wed Mar-30-22 01:36 PM
anything is possible, but I don't get fake from that slow mo. what I do get is that it was a weak ass slap. my guess is that was probably intentional so as not to hurt the dude, but to just send a message.
13457003, who keeps their hands behind their back like that though?
Posted by Stadiq, Wed Mar-30-22 01:48 PM

Chris Rock's face often looks like he is bracing to get slapped, I'll give you that.

But why did he keep his hands behind his back? Who keeps their hands behind their back as someone runs up on you??

I dunno.

I don't think the show staged it, but maybe it was something between Will and Chris to try and make Will look like a tough guy or some shit.

Even though it accomplished the exact opposite IMO

On the other hand, Chris really seemed like he bit his tongue on unloading on this cornball and he isn't a good actor.

Weird.
13457005, RE: who keeps their hands behind their back like that though?
Posted by Mafamaticks, Wed Mar-30-22 02:06 PM
It's Will Smith. They have a professional relationship at the very least and they at the Oscars. Chris didn't think he was a threat. Neither did I when I saw him go up there.

If it was a nigga on the street it would have been a whole lot different
13457006, because he didn't think it was gonna be serious
Posted by Mynoriti, Wed Mar-30-22 02:08 PM
he probably thought it was gonna be some funny why..you.. fake choking gesture but it turned out to be a slap

the only thing that gave me pause was the smirk as he walked off... but again, this is a super easy thing to stage, but it makes no sense on Will's part... or Chris for that matter.

ppl watching this like the plane hitting the pentagon lol
13457012, nah.. its 2 “actors” so believing it was “acting” isn’t far fetched
Posted by legsdiamond, Wed Mar-30-22 02:19 PM
13457017, Again...*why* would Will do this?
Posted by Mynoriti, Wed Mar-30-22 02:43 PM
it's obv an easy enough thing to stage..

but why do Will and Chris want to overshadow the accomplishments of black people at the first black produced oscar show. on the night of Will's oscar.

did Ray Donovan show up at their house or something?
13457024, How many people tuned in after hearing about the slap
Posted by legsdiamond, Wed Mar-30-22 03:29 PM
and Will was able to stay at the show and won an award like 15 minutes later.

Dude slaps the shit out of Rock and then prolly had 3X as many eyes on his acceptance speech.

No one came to assist Rock or to usher Will off. Just kept the show going like nothing happened and THAT is normal to yall?

dude is dancing with his trophy after the show and taking photos and shit.

cmon

13457027, LOL not normal =/= staged
Posted by Mynoriti, Wed Mar-30-22 03:42 PM
So Will and Rock willingly agreed to say Fuck the Williams family, Fuck Quest, fuck the first Black produced Oscars, fuck my big night that culminates 3 decades of acting...

because people are gonna tune in and social media and the View are gonna talk bout it all week!

rather than a dude got mad at a joke when his wife looked at him in and overreacted... nah no way.

you're not thinking clearly, bro

13457021, I agree 100%
Posted by Stadiq, Wed Mar-30-22 03:09 PM

I don't have time to respond to everyone but essentially-

I'm only pointing out that I do think it is odd that Chris kept his hands behind his back the entire time.

Maybe I'm a nervous guy or some shit, but I make a joke about your wife and you unexpectedly walk on stage...I'm at least bracing for a "why I oughta!" type thing.

Just standing there with your hands behind your back seems extremely unnatural to me.

Ultimately I think its real because Chris clearly wanted to unload the clip of jokes and held back.

I just think Will is enough of an insecure weirdo to set this up with Chris to look tough..esp to Jada.

Either he is a fucking weirdo who set up a fake slap to fake defend his wife OR

he is a fucking weirdo who overreacted to the situation, and produced a slap that didn't even phase Chris Rock who is probably what... a buck 50? lol

Either way, Will is a lame ass weirdo.
13457023, I see your point but I think that was more a product of Chris knowing Will ...

>Maybe I'm a nervous guy or some shit, but I make a joke about

.. and being friendly with him. Also, it was an internationally televised event. Also, Will laughed at the joke at first and I assume Rock noticed that, because he was looking right at them. So the combination of all those things may have led Rock to believe that Will was walking onto the stage to make a spectacle in good fun, or something.

Will, to my knowledge, isn't typically a confrontational dude (despite the clip from 2012 making the rounds of him smacking the journalist who tried to kiss him .. which to my mind is understandable haha) and Rock likely knows him well enough to think the same, having been around him for decades. So I'd imagine that Rock's *last* thought was that Will was walking up there to smack him upside the head.

I never thought it was staged. Doesn't even really make sense on any level.
13457025, so slapping a presenter and winning an award 10 minutes later is normal??? lol
Posted by legsdiamond, Wed Mar-30-22 03:31 PM

Academy just let Will rock (pun intended) the rest of the night?

13457029, Of course it's not normal. Both can be (and are, IMO) true.
Posted by Brew, Wed Mar-30-22 03:49 PM

13457093, It's a dumb question.
Posted by Cold Truth, Thu Mar-31-22 10:00 AM
You've asked twice, and each time, the question is framed in a way that implies that you think people already thought that it's normal.

Nobody thinks it's normal.
Nobody has even suggested or implied that it was normal.

So it's just, you know, a dumb question to ask when nobody is saying this.

To be fair, I know that I'm not dealing with a person who reaches reasonable conclusions.

I don't really think he was 'defending' his wife. seems more like trying to save face to look like he was defending her. Either way, insecure weirdo is a good description.

Perhaps in Will's mind he was defending Jada, but I agree that the slap may have been more about defending his own sense of manhood and not "looking like a punk," especially given the public emasculation and ridicule he's been subjected to for the past few years.

about this whole mess is that this kicked off because Will overreacted in wanting to defend Jada Pinkett's name and shaved head. Now folks are chomping at the bit to kick more dirt on her strictly because of actions he took.

that folks that work for the Academy are releasing drips and drabs of information before they make their final decision on how to penalize Will so that his name is tarnished enough in the eye of public opinion so that their punishment looks like a fair one.

Not that I'm excusing Will of what he did, but it's interesting how all these backstage angles and such are coming to light when the Academy could have nipped the situation in the bud by booting Will from the arena when the incident occurred Sunday night.

he was was pretty much the frontrunner to win, so it's like, what happens then?

and it's probably also a thing where people are thinking ahead and no one wants to be the one who made the call to throw him out. like what if the ultimate narrative skewed towards Will and not Chris.

plus once he refused, do they want to make ANOTHER big scene by physically forcing him out... even off camera. No one wants to be the decider in all this.

those conversations seem kinda hilarious. shit probably played out like a comedy sketch in real time.

Like night of Will got a Standing O in the room.

Just a couple of days later sentiment is shifting hard against Will.

And you can just feel the Hollywood crowd trying to be on the right side of it. It's the reason so many have been silent on it.

Will needs to seek out Chris private and have a sit down with him and apologize, and then leak that to the press.

Will Smith was NEVER asked to leave the Oscars after he slapped Chris Rock. In fact, the opposite is true -- he was told by the producer of the show he could stay ... this according to sources with direct knowledge who were present.

As you know by now, the Academy said Wednesday they had asked Will to leave the Dolby Theater after the slap but he refused. Three sources who were at the ceremony and witnessed various conversations tell TMZ ... yes, after the slap Academy officials were backstage with Will's reps and there were heated conversations about what had gone down.

We're told there was a split among the officials ... some did want him booted, but others did not. There were various discussions during several commercial breaks, but they never reached a consensus.

We're told Will was aware there was talk about asking him to leave the theater. During one of the commercial breaks, we're told Oscars producer Will Packer walked up to Will and said, "We do not want you to leave" ... this according to our sources.

Will Packer walked up to Will Smith just after 8 PM, around 35 minutes after the slap. That's when he told Will he could stay, according to our sources. Will won the Best Actor Award around 5 minutes later.

It's interesting ... the Academy's first statement about the incident never even mentioned Will Smith by name. As the day went on and outrage grew, the Academy became more aggressive and went in hard on Smith, saying he took an aggressive stance and refused to leave.

13457282, VARIETY: Will Smith resigns from the Academy
Posted by shockvalue, Fri Apr-01-22 06:24 PM
"In a statement, Smith called his actions “shocking, painful and inexcusable” and said that he will accept any additional consequences that the Academy’s Board of Governors deems appropriate.

“The list of those I have hurt is long and includes Chris, his family, many of my dear friends and loved ones, all those in attendance, and global audiences at home,” Smith said. “I betrayed the trust of the Academy. I deprived other nominees and winners of their opportunity to celebrate and be celebrated for their extraordinary work. I am heartbroken.”

13457424, nah.. he can still attend the Oscars in 2023, lol
Posted by legsdiamond, Mon Apr-04-22 01:56 PM
he can still keeps his Oscar and can still be nominated..

just means he cant vote or nominate any films or actors for the Academy Awards

doesn’t mean shit.
13457445, He resigned. Academy hasnt issued a punishment yet.
Posted by Sofian_Hadi, Mon Apr-04-22 06:19 PM
So, no that doesn't mean he will def be able to attend the Oscars in 2023. Academy could ban him from being able to attend or be nominated when they're done with their decision. But i guess you're right, his decision doesn't do a whole lot. The academy hasnt had their say yet, though.
13457446, yes.. I was just speaking on his resignation

13457430, He can still present at next years Oscars
Posted by legsdiamond, Mon Apr-04-22 02:19 PM
and its a tradition for Best Actor to present an award the next year

so we WILL see if any if this means anything once the dust settles. m

Also weird how A Sharks Tale was advertised as a free movie on my Firestick Home screen.
13457348, Will had to resign......
Posted by Kira, Sun Apr-03-22 02:26 PM
Word on the street is the minimum expulsion time was a decade. A decade was the starting point, not the max but the start.

Now his punishment is more than likely worse. He should've done this immediately after the show ended. He should've left the venue when asked to say the least of things he should've done. The Academy got him on four violations to begin with. His career as A list talent is over due to this debacle.

13457529, PLOT TWIST: "Joke Was Really About Jada Cheating On Will"
Posted by CHASE SwAyZe, Wed Apr-06-22 11:47 AM
https://www.msn.com/en-us/entertainment/entertainment-celebrity/was-chris-rock-s-oscar-joke-really-about-jada-pinkett-cheating-on-will-smith/ar-AAVVHQh

The reference of Demi Moore ("G.I. Jane" Actress) might've also been a jab at how both women enjoyed dating younger men.

Let's look back, Demi Moore left Bruce Willis for a younger Ashton Kutcher. In addition, we would later find out that Jada Pinkett was also unfaithful to Will during their break, enjoying time with a much younger counterpart as well, August Alsina. The singer is yet to hit his 30s while Jada is in her 50s.

As if things couldn't get any worse for the Smith family at the moment, August recently got involved, dropped a new track entitled, 'Shake The World' which makes reference to his time spent alongside Jada.
13457531, that’s a reach
Posted by legsdiamond, Wed Apr-06-22 11:54 AM
13457532, Sigh.
Posted by Brew, Wed Apr-06-22 11:54 AM
13457536, Demi Moore began dating Ashton Kutcher in 2003
Posted by Ryan M, Wed Apr-06-22 12:51 PM
She divorced Bruce Willis in 2000 and separated in 1998.

So…as if this wasn’t ENOUGH of a reach…no.

13457543, I seriously doubt all that went thru Will’s head after the joke registered
Posted by legsdiamond, Wed Apr-06-22 01:37 PM

but I also believe any joke is going to trigger Will or bring bak those dark days.

13457545, yeah, plus will said "a joke about my wife's medical condition"
Posted by Mynoriti, Wed Apr-06-22 01:42 PM
but even if the joke was about something else, it doesn't really change anything.
13457548, I won't pretend to know what set Will off.
Posted by Ryan M, Wed Apr-06-22 01:47 PM
But I can all but guarantee that this wasn't even remotely the intent of the joke. It doesn't go beyond the fact that Jada's hair is similar to Demi Moore in a movie from 25 years ago (which is probably the go to reference for people of a certain age for women who are bald, I guess)
13457541, even if that was true it's not really a plot twist

Posted by Airbreed, Fri Apr-08-22 02:21 PM
Their ratings have been abysmal up until the slap.

Besides, smith probably won't lose any sleep over it anyway.

13457744, can he be nominated/win though? that's what i'm most curious about.
Posted by PROMO, Fri Apr-08-22 02:31 PM
i saw he can't participate in any events, but it didn't mention (or that i saw anyway) that he's banned from being nominated or winning, so i assume that's a possibility.

would be interesting if he did something so undeniable that he had be nominated, and then won.

After seeing that video Jada was taking where Will was asking her not to film him, I'm guessing he's thanking the Academy because that's at least 10 events he doesn't have to attend with Jada.
13457745, I doubt if they're still married 10 years from now...

13457757, Nothing bans him from a nomination or win.
Posted by Ryan M, Fri Apr-08-22 03:33 PM
That would be something the Academy wouldn’t or couldn’t do.

Now he’ll effectively be neutered in winning one because he could not campaign for it at academy events. But he CAN get nominated.
13457755, Pretty much the ultimate self-inflicted would
Posted by Numba_33, Fri Apr-08-22 03:28 PM
The same night being both the highlight of his acting career and probable the death of his acting career.

That almost seems like a fictional movie in itself. Winning an Oscar award and murking himself in the same night.

Oh well.

I do wonder if I'm being hyperbolic in terms of big name studios not wanting to do business with him any more because of that ten year ban and the stigma that would get attached to anything he does going forward.
13457763, I wonder if he was on shrooms or something
Posted by Stadiq, Fri Apr-08-22 04:33 PM

This dude has maybe the most carefully crafted image...from his clean raps, etc....to wanting to be Prez one day...etc

To just completely risk it all on what could have been a huuuge night for him...over a joke he was initially laughing at?

And his weird ass speech...dancing afterwards like nothing happened.

Strange shit.

... I can't possibly diagnose them of course, and this is all spec.

But all of what you said ... plus, Will sat back down, Chris said "Will Smith just smacked the shit outta me !", and Jada leaned over cracking up !

What on earth.

I forgot about that angle of her laughing! nothing about this is making sense...

I get the whole self-absorbed, weirdo celebrity thing...but when you think about his carefully cultivated image?

I'm leaning toward substances of some kind being involved the more I think about it.

Then again who participates in that weird video posted up above (of course I'm referring to Jada ambushing him...but why doesn't he just walk off?)

I've never wanted to understand something so trivial and meaningless in my life haha

No one is going to have their career possibly linked to a man that walked on stage and hit a black man in the face over a joke. Punishment is fine. He gets to keep his Oscar. People should boycott Jada to get Will the fuck away from her.

I’m confused.

Dude can’t go to an award show.. that’s it.

oh, and can’t nominate anyone or vote on the awards.

That’s it. That’s all.

Now, I’m sure in Hollywood that is some serious punishment but FOH acting like Will is doing hard time or on house arrest and can’t leave the property unless its for work.

Dude is free as fuck and rich as hell. They did that man a favor. He doesn’t need to be out in public.
13457756, Congrats to Will for being superbly committed to the staged bit.

they will milk it next year when Chris Rock gives an award and gets a standing o, and they will milk it some more when they let Will back in so he can complete his redemption arc.
13457768, I can’t see the Oscars in it’s current form in 2032
Posted by Ryan M, Fri Apr-08-22 05:07 PM
It’s less relevant than it’s ever been.

It’ll like SURVIVE but…no redemption arc will be completed because nobody will give a shit 10 years from now.
13457799, It'll be streaming in 2-3 years tops
Posted by mrhood75, Sat Apr-09-22 02:52 AM
Like Disney+ or Netflix will pick it up.

Moving it to streaming services will probably solve a lot of the issues: no commercial breaks will severely cut down the length. Then they can issue all of the awards live they want, and even throw in a musical number or two for shits and giggles.
