So many news/viral/meme moments in this episode:

- Black Panther dance on the desk.
- The 3 slaps.
- Devante Harris and his family.
- The story of Lake Lanier

13456416, Not going to lie, I hadn't thought about that case since it happened.
Posted by Buddy_Gilapagos, Sat Mar-26-22 05:31 PM
It seems like there really wasn't a whole lot of discussion about it at the time. I didn't get vibes of what was going on until they started packing up the car.

I'm glad they reminded everyone about this. It's not something that should be forgotten.

I understand that everyone on the show has gotten so big that it would be hard to keep the cast together pass this season, I wouldn't mind if the show continued on as an anthology show with stories like this.

but they re-imagined a happier ending for them kids. and still shone a light on all the underlying issues that really didn't get the exposure they deserved when the tragedy (crime) occurred.

peace & blessings,

Maaaaaaaaaaaaan..IDK. I don’t have any business thinking they wouldn’t write that into this show. I’ve spent this whole show worried that Earn is gonna lose it all by the time it’s over.

You already know I must’ve listened to At the hotel 5x since I heard at the end of the ep. Random 70s shit like that runs my life. I thought about Otis, Doom, and Roc Marco. One of them need to get on the case.

Posted by Teknontheou, Sun Mar-27-22 08:52 AM
She has zero interest in someone like Darius.
13456428, Wasn’t that in regard to Darius asking about her and earn getting back together?
Posted by BrooklynWHAT, Sun Mar-27-22 09:51 AM
Plus I don’t think having a boyfriend don’t really mean shit these days, especially half way across the world. But that’s just me having heard “I have a boyfriend” a lot and it not meaning shit lol
13456441, Her telling him that served a dual purpose.
Posted by Teknontheou, Sun Mar-27-22 05:11 PM
As I was watching I wondered if that was the first time she was ever alone with him for more than 2 or 3 minutes.

She kills 2 birds with one stone by stating it at that moment.
13456447, that was just small talk since Earn asked him to pick her up

add in the drugs and “having a boyfriend” you left to spend time with your ex halfway around the world and umm..

anything goes.

For the record I dont think they smashed but when a woman is trying to “figure things out” anything can happen.

Both eps, were quality, but the second was really fucking good. Darius stoned out of his gourd was amazing.

Just to be clear, there’s been a “time jump,” right? They’re not on the same tour with Clark County that the started at the end of the second season? Earn said something the Amsterdam promoter about playing a different spot “last year,” and it seems like Paperboi has a more established following.
13456420, Yea.
Posted by Adwhizz, Sat Mar-26-22 07:31 PM
The Black Panther 2 mention kinda confirmed this isn't happening right after the Clark County tour

Also Earn is WAY more competent as a Manager than he was previously portrayed
13456422, Also, Earn's beard is properly edged up.

There are similarities to other FX shows but nothing out there really like it.

Posted by Buddy_Gilapagos, Wed Mar-30-22 09:46 AM
I had a memory of how good it was so I bought the box VHS set 20 years ago. Even then it didn't hold us well.

It was more shoddily shot then I remember, and there was a lot of randomness for randomness' sake. Like things would happen that were never explained, pure non-sequitars.

As random as Atlanta can feel its all very cohesive and adds to the story. The show is kind of becoming this collection of modern black folklore stories and I am here for it.

13457195, Pretty much a meh episode.
Posted by Numba_33, Fri Apr-01-22 08:19 AM
The concept of the decoy house was pretty interesting. Too bad that was the most interesting part of last night's episode to me. I wonder if any of those characters will make another appearance down the line this season or next. If not, this episode was pretty much a waste of time since nothing new happened to the main characters.

I also hope Van is more than just a pretty girl to look at this season. I have faith she'll get fleshed out a bit since I remember the second season having a Van centered episode that was top tier. I vaguely remember a German type celebration being the center of the episode.
13457199, Van had about 3 episodes where she was the primary focus
Posted by legsdiamond, Fri Apr-01-22 08:37 AM
at least that is how I remember it.

1) The weed episode where she lost her job after hanging out with a friend from college.

2) The Black mentor party where her mentors husband was white and all about Africa.

3) The German episode where she showed out.

In my opinion her character is a pretty face who is a bit selfish and hypocritical. I do
find it accurate af tho when it comes to relationships. Funny how Earn has found success while Van is blowing on the wind. Has to fuck with her to see him blow once they broke up.
13457201, Apparently this season is supposed to be about Van
Posted by Adwhizz, Fri Apr-01-22 09:20 AM
She was definitely wyling the fuck out at that party and according to Earn hadn't been checking up on Lottie who was staying with her parents.

In the 2nd episode she mentioned how she was having panic attacks

Her making a smooth exit out of the party and ending up in some random take out spot at the end got a laugh out of me.
13457210, when they into the van I said “where’s Van?”
Posted by legsdiamond, Fri Apr-01-22 09:57 AM

no idea if they knew she left already. I’m sure that’s why Earn called her.

Just seems like she is at a low point and that type of behavior is a representation of where she is in life. She don’t give a fuck about anyone and didn’t care if the person could swim or not.

but it also showed how far from reality they are right now at a party like that.

13457408, This is kind of reality tho for rappers who've "made it" or...
Posted by mrhood75, Mon Apr-04-22 11:38 AM
...on the cusp of "making it." Lots of touring Europe. Lots of meeting shady/weird MFers like Will, Socks, and Fernando. And figuring out ways to get money out of them.
13457434, shit reminds me of touring white colleges and performing for Frat houses

13457419, going with your comment above about the van
Posted by grey, Mon Apr-04-22 01:01 PM
(which i thought was interesting, not sure what you meant though u didnt expound on it)

i think theres to it than just her bein depressed.

she raising a kid by herself while the father out living it up overseas. Doin all the right things and just lost out on a job she was prolly qualified for. meanwhile earn a dropout but just came up on a bigger bag by scamming some white dude lol.

i see her behavior this episode as kinda mirroring earns, and its interesting to me that we view her as spiraling.

13457423, This isn’t a competition tho.. lol
Posted by legsdiamond, Mon Apr-04-22 01:49 PM
we talked about Earn fucking up and making bad decisions.

but Van was always judging and chasing after that shitty Jack and Jill type life.

so when she lost her job due to smoking weed even Al called her out on some “ooohhh bjt weed is BAD” imitating her voice.

I can totally relate because I used to date a Van. Fine as hell but always trying to get a nigga to adult and get a boring ass 9 to 5 and stop chasing dreams. After we broke up my shit started popping and she was running insurance scams to try to pay her rent and she had to move back home with her mom.

so I use the word spiraling for Van because more than likely she is comparing her life choices to Earns. Also stings when she prolly graduated college and Earn dropped out.
13457436, hm
Posted by grey, Mon Apr-04-22 03:12 PM
i didnt see it as competing but i think she def feels a way about him being away and living that life. you got a bit of the role reversal when earn saw her walking into her room on the last ep. she didnt care how it may have looked. kinda parallels earn shrugging off waking up next to a random in the first ep.

hm i dont remember her wanting the jack and jill life. i thought she was off that after that ep in the mansion with the interracial couple. have to go back.

>I can totally relate because I used to date a Van. Fine as

13457437, that mansion episode was my reference
Posted by legsdiamond, Mon Apr-04-22 03:27 PM
I know she chilled AFTER that party but up to that point she wanted that life.

and yeah.. Earn is doing his thing and she is free to do her thing as well but usually you don’t fly halfway across the country on the Ex’s dime to do it

but we also know Earn “owes” her for when she held shit down.

of course its prolly a joke while touring as well

but I specifically remember his stand up about white girls getting drunk and snatching hats. Like its the first thing they do when they see a Black guy with a hat is game-plan how to snatch it.

13457671, was that the same guy from the boat in the hotel lobby?
Posted by legsdiamond, Fri Apr-08-22 07:22 AM
I knew he was going to kill himself after he went out to the pool

another example of how white folks would rather die than live in a world where they have to give up a little bit of power.

Brad: “I’m hungarian and austrians were enslaved..”

coworker: “that was like, a million years ago”

I fell the fuck out
13457725, Yeah same dude
Posted by Mafamaticks, Fri Apr-08-22 12:40 PM
Once he said the curse was lifted after white folks started acknowledging the effects of slavery I thought he was gonna ride off in the sunset.

And the juxtaposition between this episode and last episode. We just was hanging with billionaires. Fernando was siiiick when he lost 20k to Paperboi.

And here we are the next episode watching white folks melt the fuck down lol
13457736, Not sure why but I knew dude was going to shoot himself
Posted by legsdiamond, Fri Apr-08-22 01:46 PM
when he said “and now your wife will have to raise her kid by herself.. just like we did to their women”

and it also was another example of white folks choosing death over taking responsibility just like the white women in 3 slaps

“Now we’re free from the lie!”

but the hotel worker saying “theres more where that came from” or whatever he said makes me believe this whole season will have episodes where we see white folks choose death over a better world for Black folk.

Shit is real

be Darius' dream similar to how the first episode was Earn's Dream
(The next episode might still have it end up being connected to the main characters in some way)

I know I mentioned Twin Peaks earlier, but another way this episode reminded me of that show was the use of sound as part of the storytelling

The kind of muffled effect at the begining of this episode while dude was in the coffee shop was similar to the sound decsribed by the Boat Man (who was also apparently the guy in the bar tonight!)

Edit:Just realized that the guy from the Boat being in this probably means this was another one of Earn's Dreams

im all for us getting whats owed to us, but we arent even close to being able to discuss redistribution of wealth

also, any plan that requires us to get together FIRST, is dead before we even start

our culture have been pushing getting together first since the late 60’s, we need new ideas with unconventional thought

we need a plan thats self sustaining, a plan that feeds itself
a plan that doesnt require donations or help from the government

13457873, For me, a take away from Episode was, that ish is never going to happen
Posted by Buddy_Gilapagos, Mon Apr-11-22 08:33 AM
Like the comedy of the episode to me is the idea that White People are just going to go along with it. Wear shirts saying they were slave owners. Give up their homes. Have their pay docked.

The absurdist humor is the idea they aren't going to push back and fight like hell with everything they have to make sure that ish doesn't happen.

I was a bit uncomfortable watching it because I was thinking, man this feels like a scared straight show for white surpremecist. I could see the Alt-right getting into this show as an example of what black people want to do to white people. It was like the reverse Get Out.

It got the biggest laugh of the episode out of me, but it seemed like a white nightmare is coming home and seeing a black BBQ going in their house.

The part I bought into the most is the 'ignore it all at first because there's no way that's going to happen TO ME' part. A big chunk of Murrica JUST DID (something like) THIS with COVID from fall 2019 to late February 2020. Then, March 2020 hit and it was on (or off).

You're right for sure..the fight back would be ridiculous. I'm thinking it would be people showing up to black people's houses with the violence.

I think its more of white folks thinking its been so long how could they actually connect us to slavery.

Its the old “I never owned slaves” response.

What I liked about it was the shame. Like “eww, Brad’s family had slaves.. that’s so racist”

What I didn’t get was the “100% Nordic? How can that be!!??” was she mad because she thought she was something else?

13457940, regarding the covid to reparation connection
Posted by Numba_33, Mon Apr-11-22 02:02 PM
COVID: folks denying and ignoring basic science behind how COVID spreads in terms of not wanting to mask up and/or get vaccinated.

Reparations: folks denying and ignoring basic history in terms of no fiscal retribution behind the years of unlawful treatment behind slavery, post slavery Jim Crow discrimination, and current lack of an even playing field in many aspects of society between black and white folk in the US because of lack of said retributions.

we ain't getting reparations by NOT talking about it...

https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/2021/aug/18/evanston-illinois-reparations-plan-cautionary-tale

because white supremacy has so effectively fractured Black unity, there is no perfect solution, nor could there ever be. kidnapping, holocaust, labor, sexual, mental exploitation cannot be effectively quantified. however, that is never a good enough reason to do nothing. a nuanced approach will be most effective. for example, i've made it to a decent enough standard of living that i don't need support to obtain housing, employment, transportation. BUT I went into significant debt for education, so perhaps in my case, my loans are zeroed out and/or mortgage balance reduced. that's actually more of a cost neutral solution since these lenders have done got their money times over from interest alone. other folks may need a car, apartment/house, starter investment account, etc.

if the objective is to get folks as financially independent as possible, there is no cookie cutter approach. nevermind the fact that many Black people who've reached a certain level will (hopefully) opt out.

a national/local hybrid solution is probably the best, since many localities may not even have a meaningful number of Black residents, but often have a history of chasing them out or killing them off. A relocation/settlement plan would be appropriate in many circumstances.

despite the unsurprising but predictable knee jerk reaction of white tears, it is a conversation that incorporates economics, social science, financial analysis, education policy, ALL that shit. and without feelings (which are very valid but folks use to deflect).

I mean the medicine that "Payback" gave was that no matter what, the motherfucker was ALRIGHT. he had to work harder for (probably) less, but he wasn't on section 8/evicted/homeless. it was subtle seasoning/conditioning, and great seed planting. hell, can't no one on earth convince me that Dennis Haybert's David Palmer didn't project imagery that made Obama possible.

plus the huge departure in terms of storylines will throw a lot of people off for sure.

This parallels The Love Movement album from Tribe to me in that regard. I did like that prior reparations episode a ton, so I suppose I hold this season in higher regard than I do that album.

**edit**

And yet another episode were Van was treated pretty much as a thrown away character. I'm assuming there will be an episode devoted totally to Van and involving none of the male characters that will show her random day to day affairs.

13458317, Great character development for Paper Boi in this episode
Posted by Damali, Tue Apr-19-22 12:20 PM
We see him struggling with this life he built in some key ways...

at one point, he tries to connect w/Earn, his cousin..his friend, but he realizes that he can't...at least not like before. it shines a spotlight on how when you "come up" and all the jobs around you are filled by the people closest to you, the "job" becomes bigger than you expected it to be in that person's life. Earn was almost fired for being a shitty manager so now he is now a competent and skilled artist manager, which means its damn near all consuming. Earn's anticipating of his needs/wants really drove this home for Alfred.

then later, he dismisses everyone from the room cuz he only felt safe to share his most vulnerable self with someone who wasn't them...he found the words that he can't any other time, with Earn and Darius...and we found out that he's struggling...that he don't feel the same about rapping..that he feels its too late to do anything else...that he's trapped, essentially.

Brian Tyree Henry is at the top of his game as an actor. every single thing i see him in, he's excellent...even his little small part in If Beale Street Could Talk

anyway, this episode was pivotal and I think Paper Boi is gonna quit the tour.

Posted by legsdiamond, Tue Apr-19-22 02:35 PM
and he was just putting out fires and on top of everything which kind of made Paper Boi realize he can’t have that intimate convo like he used to have..

and Darius is just… Darius.

and that is the crazy thing an out fame and being a music artist. Performing the same songs.. every night gets old real quick. So does having everyone kiss your ass and do everything for you. Its easy to lose yourself.

13458353, The Bottle Episode. Ain't No Way in the world PaperBoi trusting Socks!
Posted by Buddy_Gilapagos, Wed Apr-20-22 07:34 AM
Paper Boi has been the absolute most street smart dude of the show and its a lot off character that he and the rest would be so trusting and allow that Socks dude into the crew. I was watching the ep from the beginning and was like, I hope this dude isn't a regular for the rest of the season.

BTW, I was hoping that they wouldn't let him on the bus at the end (wouldn't it have been a win for the team if they snatched the phone from him and closed the door before he got on?!?)

My only other complaint is I wish they gave Darius more than that one note but otherwise, I enjoyed the episode. Especially the performance of BTH. Dude so rarely gets to talk about himself and how he feels. It's usually sighs and frowns from him but dude put in an Emmy performance last night.

The kid playing the song was the weirdness that only this show is delivering and separates it from the others.

I am assuming is too busy with other projects because her presence is missed. I think how they are handling Van and how this episode was all one location shows that they are trying to be creative about actors not being around and they are mostly doing it well.

scary how that felt like a real ad campaign too

My favorite part of the episode was Darius

The amount of pain he felt when he saw the restaurant was closed was a new side of him.
The restaurant scene made his nigerian roots real to the viewer, something that always seemed light hearted before. Daruis' connection is already exposed as weak in the resturaunt. To see the restaurant shut down was like severing this connection. Darius hold few things truly dear. Things to him are fleeting and unreal. His nigerian roots are the only thing that grounds him, his anchor. And this white lady physically and emotionally gutted it.

Also, it hit close hearing him call the restaurant lady "Auntie." Because that's what we do in my own culture with women who aint family, but are familiar
13458586, yeah the Darius shit definitely hit home with me too

That said, it truly is surprising how often this season is staying away from the main cast AND telling (universal) white stories through a Black lens

Especially now that the cast are all big timers, it's hard not to want as much of them doing the thing they do on this show as much as we can get it. Brian Tyree Henry especially. His Paperboi is such a fun TV character.

But I do really enjoy how slow the joke burns on episodes like this too. It just feels like we're losing time with those people.

13459236, i mean i thought they did some interesting things
Posted by Mynoriti, Sat Apr-30-22 01:52 PM
on cultural divides
or the connection between Bash and Sylvia vs Bash and his parents.
they seemed to not view Sylvia as fully fleshed person, even though she's essentially doing *their* job.
only getting to know things about her through tragedy, and her funeral. and in a sense getting to know their own son. The way Bash hit all the church queues was such a great touch.
Also the sacrifice of Sylvia's own family to raise these white kids, including Chet Hanks, who is basically future Bash if she doesn't die.

i thought there were some cool things, but I just don't think it was good enough to justify pulling us away from the main group again. i didn't really feel that with the other 2 short story episodes
13459237, Right I want to see stories about Ern, Alfred, Darius & Van….

stand-alone short stories is clearly something he wants to explore, so instead of going doing something separate he's trying to incorporate it in.
i admire the ambition, but it doesn't always work. the first 2 felt worth it. this one not as much. especially after the momentum of 2 main character episodes i a row.

Posted by Buddy_Gilapagos, Sun May-01-22 07:39 AM

The show has been dealing with the problem of all the Actors are now big time movie stars and aren't available to shoot. That's why they ending the show.

I liked how they dealt with the problem with the black kid and the white parents. That was still "Atlanta" themed.

But an episode about a white family in NY who had Trini nanny is just a story about white people and isn't even remotely Atlanta related.

Like someone else said, it's just an episode of High Maintenance. And I like High Maintenance but I really turn on Atlanta to watch black people (specifically the cast of the show).

at least it was to me..

The funeral was black af. You had the celebration, the remembrance and the fighting..

Raising white kids while missing out on our own kids lives. Reminded
me of my grandmother when she passed.

She was a maid and the white fam showed up all “we loved your grandmother” and most of us were like “who the fuck are you?” because that was just her work family.

the smirk tho? Was that a gotcha moment? Did she have the wife’s shit on? Won’t lie, I wasn’t that into all the details because overall it wasn’t a strong story for me.

would love for him to have a new show where these stories happen every week but maybe people passed on his pitch so he said fuck it.. lets use them now since everyone is so busy.

It was told from the perspective of a White Family.

We really don't need Atlanta to tell stories from the perspective of white people.

Heck we definitely need more shows about White New Yorkers.

Part of the specialness of this show was it's Atlanta-ness. I think its far more interesting to see even Atlanta folks in Europe then seeing another show about a white couple in New York dealing with crazy immigrants (a la Seinfeld).

every single episode, including the ones w/the main cast, have done this in some way.

This IS the vision for this season.

Posted by Nodima, Sun May-01-22 10:27 AM
Young white men are raised on Black culture while white adults fail to recognize or relate to that connection. Ending the episode with Sylvia smirking at dad felt like a sort of "gotcha" shot.

And I mean heavy handed in the sense that it didn't work, really, even though I liked the episode as a whole separated from the "where's the Atlanta cast?" conversation. Dad looking down the hallway like he saw a ghost when it's just the woman who raised his kid. Atlanta might not always be subtle but I feel like it's usually not so eager to show the trick it's trying to pull either.

But I like the offshoot episodes better than the main plot right now.

The main show feels stagnant. I'm not feeling this Europe shit AT ALL.

The show is called ATLANTA. I'd like to see them back in their element.

The offshoots at least are interesting and honestly I'd watch this as a show on it's own.
13459384, i mostly agree

i dont dislike the main plot episodes but i do prefer the offshoot ones overall. i do agree about being over the europe stuff. it was cool for one or two episodes but im ready to see them go back to atlanta or somewhere else.

to me the actual career arc was never why i watched the show. well maybe before i saw the first episode. the experiences they went through was what kept me watching. i think there is a limit to what they can experience so opening the show up to more characters allows them to explore other scenarios and topics.

maybe they were forced to do this because the availability of the main cast but i think they have made some really good lemonade out of it if that's the case.

13459945, Nah, they're having a lot of similar adventures, acutely
Posted by Nodima, Sat May-07-22 07:06 AM
Big house parties, weird drugs, fans chasing them down, shows that don't work out quite right

They're trying to tell stories about keeping your knowledge of self being a fish out of water, outgrowing the places that made you and make you comfortable (or not recognizing that you've built comfortable places for others that you aren't comfortable in once you recognize what it is)

Like I said in another post, I still think it's really dope TV from writing to acting to directing, all over, but it feels like they're dropping a hammer with this season and I get why it's divisive 'cause it's not very coherent and it feels more like your average extremely good TV show - not ATLANTA. Like, Paperboi isn't stupid enough he's never heard the "who owns your masters" conversations. That's been out in the open since 1993 and the Atlanta mixtape scene took it nuclear!

The show's gotten more broad in content but I think the season has a pretty specific message and it's trying to parallel situations from the first two, putting different characters in old situations and pointing out how you can play at comfortable but you can find yourself a long way from home trying to succeed.

a big shrooms/acid(whatever was in the cookies) trip by Al and most of it never actually happened

The guy at the store questioned if he was ready lol

At the beginning of the ep Al saw someone with the Goofy hat on sitting in a doorway passing out with the same blanket he would be wrapped in at the end of the episode.

I think Lorraine was all in his imagination too as was intimated at the end of the episode that Lorraine was his mother’s name, the conversation about his masters, other stuff…

Then you had the young hooligans chasing him earlier then grabbed the baby out of the stroller and started tossing it back and forth was hilarious…

Then he walked in on what was apparently an acting audition…

Him meeting Liam Neeson and their conversation…

Their drinks in the bar being bought by someone in a spotted dog costume lol

13459948, Coulda taken it a little too literal for sure
Posted by Nodima, Sat May-07-22 08:10 AM
That internal struggle would definitely build off the fundraising efforts from the designer clothes episode.

Either way, I really feel like it's the setting and the obviousness of each episode having some kind of message that makes this season feel so different, even if the writing, situations and characters are right in line with what came before.

Posted by Buddy_Gilapagos, Sat May-07-22 02:41 PM
I thought it was going to be weird for weird's sake but this was definitely weirdness with a purpose.

It reminded me of the episode of Sopranos where Tony figured out Big Pussyz was a rat during a bout of food poisoning.

I saw it was headed to be an episode about tripping and wasn't that interested because those get kind of predictable.

But yeah tripping and touching on some things bugging you subconsciously is real. Been there.

Cool story telling tricks, cool cameos and cool reveals.
.

I feel like the only person who thought that Perkins episode was weird for weird's sake. I didn't think it was that deep.

I thought this one was kind of deep.

The white woman crying as a performance.

New Jazz speaks to the whole history of black music and Europe. To me that was about selling out and performing for white audiences. His momma wouldn't let him do it.

Liam Neelson was on the nose but it was a wild Convo and love it in the tradition of Atlanta messing with folks like Mike Vick and Katt Williams who got some controversy. Wild for Liam Nielson to say what he said.

I was thinking it was unbelievable in 2022 a smarter rapper to not know anything about owning his master's. The trick was he knew about it, but he wasn't 100% sure if Ern handled it so that he owns his masters and it was eating at his subconscious.

Man the tenses moment of watching this entire series was watching Ern answer the question who owns his master's. I literally did a fist pump when Ern said he did.

And at the end of the day this was a story about a guy missing his momma and how she was the one he trusted to tell the truth. I lost my dad last year and that shit hit differently.

This episode was peak Atlanta for me. Dealing with regular black people issues in a surreal crazy way. There are other shows to tell alot of other stories, but this is a story only Atlanta can tell.

Which makes me think they recorded one season (10 episodes) with the crew, and did another 10 episodes of stand alone and are mixing them up for the last two seasons.

LOL @ the council asking a HIGH SCHOOL kid questions about what to mix with Hennessy

George Wallace was such a pleasant surprise.

The scene of the entire school auditioning to be Black had so many gems
(Singing Shai, the 2 Asian guys in the background recreating the Stankonia cover)

13460368, Funny, a little cringey, Donald Glover telling on himself.
Posted by Buddy_Gilapagos, Fri May-13-22 11:55 AM
Seeing it was written by Donalod Glover, this one felt personal. DG definitely strikes me as a guy who found his blackness later in life...I just hope he (and his audience) are in on the joke that Being Black is more than pimping hoes and slamming Cadillac doors.

...cuz what the fuck does that even mean? there ain't shit to find. we are not a monolith. he was born Black and there is literally nothing he could do or not to do be any more or less so.

but fine, if you think there is a "definition", you still don't get to define Blackness for anyone but yourself

13460631, Unclench your fist sis. I mean, it's literally what the episode is about.
Posted by Buddy_Gilapagos, Tue May-17-22 05:40 PM
I am not talking about how someone talks. I am not talking about defining blackness for anyone else. When I mention I found the episode cringey I was specifically talking about jokes about being black means knowing what to mix henny with or defining blackness by getting shot by the police.

You don't need to explain (black'splain?) to me that black people come from all sorts of backgrounds and have all sorts of experiences.

The episode wass tongue in cheek and to a certain extent so is the expression "find their blackness". But to me its about being comfortable in a black environment, in your black skin and confronting issues of race.

I am saying that DG strikes me as a guy who grew up around white kids and was comfortable being the one black kid in the crew (Jordan Peele gives me the same vibes). I could be wrong, but I would bet the kid voted "Most Likely to Write for The Simpsons" probably took a white girl to the Prom.

I know the type because I've been around the type my whole life. My brother who did not grow up with me is the type. My niece is currently the type. When I went to college it was super easy to tell who were the kids who grew up in black environments and the kids who didn't. In college there were black kids who had exclusively black friends, and some who had exclusively white friends (and the rare birds that were harder for me to figure out who seemed to flow effortless from black crowds to white crowds, but they were mostly athletes).

My brother use to get embarrassed when my dad would talk his black power shit. My niece this weekend said we sounded like the KKK because I was talking about how I was encouraging this young brother I know to marry a black woman.

It's a real documented thing, I think you know what I am talking about.

What's interesting is that people DO "find their blackness". After college, my brother didn't have the same paths and doors open for him as his white college friends but he did fall into working on spike lee sets and there for the first time I think he was surrounded by black folks. It was interesting to watch his friend group change over time but he did find a group of black people with similar interest and backgrounds. He even married black which made my pops very happy.

I even have seen it with a lot of the private school black kids I wrote off in college for not being "down" with the black kids in college. I ended up being good friends with a few (admittedly, those are more cases of me being less judgey as I got older then them actually finding their blackness). I also see it differently because now I have kids in private school. All I can say is I spend a lot of time trying to make sure they are comfortable and at home around their people.

Anyway, I've been following DG since his NYU days doing Derrick Comedy. I actually reach out to him while he was in college to see if he was interested in working on a project I was working on but he was already well on his way to making movies (mind you as the one black friend in the movie Mystery Team). But from the stuff he was doing in NYU it was kind of clear he was the black kid with all the white friends. Even his rap albums he seemed like that guy. And he could have made a good career being the black friend on white shows and movies like we saw on Community.

I think anyone who had been following DG's career from the outside will tell you that they were shocked when Atlanta dropped.

It could mean I was wrong about him all along. It also could mean he realized that the best way to make it in Hollywood as a black person is to lean into his blackness. I don't know. I could be wrong...but I will still bet money his prom date was white....like the mother of his three kids.

I'll close out with lyrics from his first album. There is a reason why he has distanced himself from his early rap work.

"Relax, black chick, I think that I have offended thee
Got nothing against the sisters, I just don’t think they’re into me"

I grew up in the burbs and school was PWI

but after school and summers were Black as hell!!! Black church camps, summer visits with my cousins in the hood, down south or on Long Island.

so college was interesting. Of course I gravitated to my people but I would be at Freaknik one week and the next I could be in Nashville at a concert with the white dude who introduced me to Red Hot Chilli Peppers.

so when I transferred to VCU it was lovely because its 50% white and 50% Black, Brown, Asian, Ethiopian, Rican, Persian, etc..

so I walked away from VCU with a wild cariety of friends but 99% of the real ones were Black folk

as far as DG is concerned. I remember he said the Weeknd and them were like “we didn’t know if you were a real nigga… nigga” when they were on tour. I think DG player the game to perfection or guys like DG and Peele realized they had enough “trust” from white folk to make Black art.

or maybe they simply realized the times we are in and Blackness is “in”

which is why DG keeps talking about Black Panther 2? Does he want that part or is he joking America with the over the top love BP received?
13460753, School s absolutely the most integrated time of most peoples lives
Posted by Buddy_Gilapagos, Wed May-18-22 03:32 PM
I mean between school and work I've always had white friends and can flow in those environment, but my homebase has always been black.

The whites love my wife and she can kick it with them well, but it would be tough to be with her and couldn't be like, "these racist crackas driving me crazy".

Let me put it to you another way, how many white people were at your wedding?

With himself no less. But I am the a-hole.

Interesting read. I want my kids to describe me the way he described his dad.

Funny he linked Dr. Umar criticising him. Its go to get under his skin a little bit the talk about his white queen. Good for him to take it on.

It's totally brand new to think DG hasn't been followed with issues around his blackness.

I didn't hate this episode as much as i hate it as a finale. Especially after giving us a penultimate stand-alone (i think the cancel club one was the last time we saw Paperboy and Darius)

But stripping that context, as far as Van-centered episodes, i liked this a lot more than Champaigne Papi and the German town one.

Posted by Mafamaticks, Sun May-22-22 10:36 AM
the hands by themselves don't mean much.

Van's willingness to find out who she is and Tarrare's hunger are similar. Van started off light, hanging out at Drake parties, stealing wigs and pushing niggas in the pool. Tarrare started off digging through trash and eating small rodents.

Based on her antics up to this point, it's safe to say Van has crossed a bunch of lines to be doing what she's doing. Van was free to try and figure out what her life was gonna be past her being a mom to Lottie and that job she had. But she been going extra hard clearly.

Tarrare's appetite was so fucking wild it was believed he ate a toddler. The hands imo was the last line Van hadn't crossed yet. Van was about to start eating children in a few until her friend and Lottie pulled her back from the brink.

To switch subjects a bit, I think some of the jokes are probably way funnier in the writers room (re: pissing). The contrast of Hiro setting up this beautiful shot all the while dude getting pissed on was funny to me.

But actually crafting the technical shit behind the scenes in order to pull that off is probably way funnier to them.
13461087, The episode's head writer talked about this with IndieWire
Posted by Nodima, Sun May-22-22 12:55 PM
One of my favorite things in all of entertainment is when a writer goes full Stephen Malkmus on their audience and says their version of "I'm glad that song made you think about your life, but it's just about a game of tennis."

IndieWire: So, Tarrare. Was he someone you discovered after writing this episode or did he inspire it somehow?

Stefani Robinson: I found a Wikipedia page on this guy posted on Facebook. There’s this Facebook group, the Cool Freaks’ Wikipedia group, which is just a collection of people posting interesting and weird and freaky Wikipedia articles, and he was one of them. This was a while ago, when I still had Facebook, and I read it and I was just “This is the most insane ” I can’t even really go into the detail of who this guy is, it’s probably better to just look him up. He was a real person but felt very mythical and strange. He was just this guy who ate a ton, but was never satisfied, and stank and had odor vapor rising off of him. And I think at some point there were actual accusations that he was eating people. He’s a French guy.

That was one of the weird things that I had read when we were writing Season 3, which obviously takes place in Europe, and it felt like the right thing to bring up in the writers’ room. I remember coming up earlier on and it just sort of became this person that we all became fascinated by. We had different ways in which we were thinking about trying to incorporate him, but I felt it obviously makes sense for the cannibalism elements in this episode to make that leap, so we got it in there. But if anything, I feel it was more of an inside joke and less anything philosophically related to what was going on.

13461175, Nah, I think what you're doing is exactly why art isn't kept in vaults
Posted by Nodima, Tue May-24-22 04:12 AM
I hated this episode, full stop, so much so it's the only one of the season I watched more than once (three times) with a different co-watcher each time to gauge their opinions.

(They're less opinionated than me overall, but were still what could generically be described as "confused".)

But when I said that I love the Malkmus approach to fans interpreting art, I love it because it's so different from how most media is these days where everything is some kind of tease or hint at a bigger thing, often in large part because the fans have done so much work to imply it could be.

So I kind of loved, as somebody who didn't do the homework before or after the episode on first watch and was absolutely put off by it, that I could've done so and possibly come to entirely different reactions. In a different way than, say, CyrenYoung, I do think that's really cool of Atlanta that it's a Black show about Black issues starring Black actors and it's challenging in the way classically challenging TV can be. On rewatching, I liked the episode a little more each time just because I couldn't help but realize, despite whatever I wanted from this show, this was what they wanted to give me.

I felt like I was the target of the stale baguette, but I'm also wondering a bit more if the stale baguette was the primary metaphor for this entire season.

13461059, The finale was super boring.

13461207, Yeah the finale lost me. I still think they can't write for black women.
Posted by Buddy_Gilapagos, Tue May-24-22 11:34 AM
It's an old problem for the show. It just always seem that all the black women characters are mad shallow and scheming on dudes for their dollars, except for Van. She seemed to have HAD some real dimensions and seemed more like a real person. This episode actually seemed to walk that back a bit for me.

I was all in for the reinvention in Paris. It was funny. Even the bad accent. Even the beating with the bread. Even the idea that she had created this rich complex life in Paris in like 2 weeks.

But they lost me at the breakdown. They lost me at the speech about suicide. I just didn't buy it. I don't know if it was a performance or writing thing, but it just didn't seem...honest. It didn't connect with anything we had seen to date throughout the series. It seems like an issue they came up with in the writers room to explain what was going on with all the quiky things they had Van doing this season. It didn't seem like it was born out of any of the writer's actual experience. I heard the writer's room has one black woman, and I don't think she has kids. It showed.

I loved New Jazz and was able to ride with the absurdism/realism because (a) they were high and (b) it struck a real chord. They used surrealism to get at some underlying real problems dude was going through which we have seen from the first season.

What's Van's issue again? Can you remember what she said in her speech? I had to watch the scene again to remember. Oh, She felt "off"? She didn't know who she was? Have we seen anything up to this season to suggest being suicidal? There was payoff with Paperboi dealing with issues that have popped up since season 1 in Big Jazz. This felt like, oh shit, the season is wrapping up and we have to do something with Van.

The hand stuff, was just weird for weird's sake. It really felt like a writer's room coming up with some, what's the weirdest thing we could do here. Same with the Pee'ing stuff. It just seemed...immature to me. Just testing what they could get away with.

It was a good season. but it didn't feel like a whole complete season. I am sure it will end strong, glad to hear we don't have to wait years for it.

13461302, I get feeling lost.. I’ve heard women say that once they have a kid
Posted by legsdiamond, Wed May-25-22 09:22 AM
especially if they doing the heavy lifting and the father is “co-parenting” which I put in parentheses because some fathers miss 80% of their kids lives but swear that 20% is enough.

I think she hinted at Earns success but I think this is the whole reason she is in Europe. This dude out here gettin it and “no one knows where Earn is” back home.

I wish they really had her go in on her jealousy or frustration of seeing Earn handle biz and how it has her feeling like she fucked up a good thing.

and we all know a “good thing” may not actually even happen IF they stayed together. Some people simply can’t function productively when dating certain people.
13461336, They could have really gone in on the story of it being lightweight jealousy
Posted by Buddy_Gilapagos, Wed May-25-22 12:38 PM
I think we are filling in the blanks that its because Earn is doing well and she is struggling because they haven't really shown or said any of that.

13461366, Damn, I disagree with most of this.

I spent most of the episode wondering what was / why was anything happening (I think I said elsewhere I rewatched with two other people two separate times and saw more of the comedy without the curiosity looming over it) and then it gets to that scene...and Zazie really broke me there, I really felt what she was getting at. Especially because I had to empathize rather than relate to a lot of it.

I don't know what it's like to have gotten in a relationship with a hometown homie you never really saw yourself settling with, only to have a child, but then always feel like the better parent, better adult, more interesting person for several years...until suddenly that guy gets to be successful, travel the world, see all these things you have a desire to reconnect with or explore more deeply (see: her guiding his clueless ass through the German festival last season) and yet...you're supposed to just be a working mom back in Atlanta, and it turns out your life is kind of laid out for you in a way that wasn't even fully forced on you, you chose it through both your good and bad choices while this guy...I mean, the Earn in this season is SO different from the first two seasons!

But I can empathize in that sense that in people saw things in me, sometimes I saw them in myself, but at some point I settled into a groove that I thought I was happy with and was proving to somebody *waves hands widely* that I had figured something out. Only now, those people I thought I was proving something to are not only succeeding in other fields or ways of life in ways I find really alien, some of them are even succeeding in THIS field in ways I'm realizing I might not want to match them on. So I get that idea of flailing and that fantasy of creating a new life for yourself, going full Severance and pretending that you can have what that guy, your child's father, has that the world seems to want to deny you.

Again, I can't emphasize enough that I think none of that comes through at all in the rest of the episode, but I've heard a few Black critics strongly, STRONGLY connect to that almost from the jump so I feel like I just have to admit that bit is just something I have to take what I can from it.

But I'm really surprised anybody would watch this episode and think that the bit where Van comes back to reality is the low point of the episode. To me, it was the only bit that tied it to what felt like the thesis of the rest of the season, of losing self-image and self-understanding of what it means to be adult, independent and Black the further from home, or your roots, or what you think is how the world makes sense, you get.

Edit: Also, the more I've read and listened to thoughts on this episode in particular, just wanna shout out CyrenYoung for seeing that this would be an episode (or final trio or so of episodes) that would draw out some really valuable introspection and discussion from people who were willing to accept the show might not want to entertain us all the time. I can't stress enough that I can't be convinced this episode was GOOD, but I can't be convinced Miles Davis' On the Corner (wild, off the cuff first thing I thought of reference) is good either. Doesn't mean it isn't really interesting.

Donald Glover Talks ‘Atlanta’ Season 3 Backlash: “It Made Me Very Sad, I Cried”

"I knew season three wasn't easy. We all knew it wasn't easy."

BY MARC GRIFFIN

APRIL 5, 2023 3:39PM

Donald Glover says he cried after Atlanta season 3 received backlash. During an interview with GQ, Glover, 39, spoke about seasons 3 and 4 of his hit FX show and revealed that he knew the third chapter would be challenging to digest for audiences.

“As a product maker, as an entertainer, as an artist, as somebody who loves to make things for people… I’ve studied it enough to understand that things feel good because of what comes before and after them,” he said. “We deserve quality. We deserve something that isn’t easy for everyone to digest all the time.”

“I knew season three wasn’t easy. We all knew it wasn’t easy. We knew opening the season without (any of the cast) was going to make people f**king mad and be like, ‘What the f**k?’ It felt like… you’re climbing, and you’re climbing to get to the top where the light is. And when you get there, you can do whatever dance you want. And that’s what everybody’s fighting for.”

Donald Glover Reveals "This Is America" Was Initially A Drake Diss
After the GQ interviewer told the Atlanta native that they liked the third season, Donald shed light on his creative intentions with that specific chapter.

“I think with me specifically, people never give me the benefit of the doubt,” he said. “And I needed to see for me. This has nothing to do with the art, because I made sure that the art was good. But it really was a personal exploration just for me. No one else knows this, but I was like, Did I make it? Did I make it to the Kanye and the Quentin Tarantino and the Scorsese level? I do think people will go back and be like, ‘This season is good.’ I wasn’t ever worried about that.”

“Like with Wes Anderson, there’s different rules. This ni**a never makes money. It’s not about the money. It’s because a certain group of people are like, ‘This is important.’ And I was like, ‘Are Black people at a point now where they can do that on their own?’ It made me very sad, I cried. I did. Not like, ‘You guys, this is really good.’ (Laughs.) It’s like what Prince said when U2 won best album. He was like, ‘If y’all wanted me to make that album, I could have.’ U2 couldn’t make Sign o’ the Times. But I know the character I am in culture and in Black culture—and that it doesn’t feel good coming from me. And also like, I don’t feel good saying sh*t like that. I’d much rather lay on the empathy.”
