13451776, Dave Chappelle and “the Black Ass Lie” That Keeps Us Down (Vanity Fair link)

by Jamilah Lemieux

The comedian perpetuates the idea that straight Black men have it worse than any other group of Black people—including Black women and LGBTQ+ Black people.

i won't be commenting at all in this post cuz Jamilah brought every receipt possible and said everything that needed to be said. I already know most of you won't bother reading it and fuck all if i care...lol I'm so glad the article exists

cheers,

Where does she come up with, or what is the basis for statements like this:

"The average Black man was not raised to see himself as obligated to the women of our race, certainly not to queer people or the other bitches; his obligation is to himself, to get as free as he can be. Over time, we ended up committed to supporting him and his freedom, not ours."

Who is the average black man? Chris Brown? Torey Lanez? Da Baby? How is this not engaging in baseless stereotyping?

Just seems like Black Twitter Gender Warz dressed up for the exceedingly white Vanity Fair audience. I'm exhausting thinking how much people will be arguing about this for the next few weeks.

Black men have similar (and sometimes even more progressive) views towards feminism as black women do.

Black people like Jamillah are constantly given a platform in white spaces to say this because it affirms white liberals' biases. It doesn't have to be true.
13451854, This part. This part. This part.

She singles out black men but DCs POV is representive of the black community as a whole.

If you pluck 20 random people from around the globe, regardless of Gender/Race/Nationality/Level of Ability/economics/etc, most of them would probably tell you nobody has it harder than them/people like them.

A lot of good valid points brought up in this, some odd takes in there as well (did she actually want them to have actual teenage girls in the "Piss on You" sketch?!)
13451833, Yeah that was strange wording
Posted by Mynoriti, Fri Jan-14-22 08:37 PM
i haven't read this whole thing but i saw that part.
i know her point was he was focusing on the piss fetish as opposed the the criminal part, but to say he ignored it by "instead casting adult women" was weird. i mean as opposed to what?

I hate how every headline framed it like he either had to grovel for forgiveness or told the mob to get fucked, when neither is true.

he threaded it perfectly. if anyone reads what he said and is still mad at him, it's on them.

in here usual suspecting.

Meanwhile, she's right. And it's been said.
I read the article a couple days ago, can't find anything to disagree with.
13451826, How can your opinion be so simple as "she's right?"
Posted by Buddy_Gilapagos, Fri Jan-14-22 07:28 PM
Like we've been on this net for 20 years now and someone can so completely sum up your own opinions?

Like she makes a lot of good points but there is nothing there you disagree with?

Like you really whole heartedly co-sign the idea that black men are RAISED (mind you that's an indictment of mother's as well) to believe that they are only obligated to themselves? You really believe that?

Posted by Buddy_Gilapagos, Fri Jan-14-22 07:34 PM
My first question once I read this was whose her parents and mate? Couldnt find who her babys father was but saw her dad was a black panther. Twitter says he was an informer but I don't give that weight but the panther stuff is interesting because I've always found the Panthers problematic because of their treatment of women. My intro to the panthers was Elaine browns autobiography and she talked about the misogyny and sexual violence at the hands of fellow black Panthers and I had no interest in them. But is that where she learns that most black men ain't shit and dont give a f*ck about black women or anyone else?

I've read plenty more about them. Do you think they didn't have a problem with the treatment of women in their org?

13451862, of course, and they also had a revolutionary approach to gender
Posted by Brotha Sun, Sat Jan-15-22 12:36 PM
Many women from the BPP (including Elaine Brown) will tell you duties and leadership were based on merit and not gender roles. BPP had hella chapters and hella iterations that handled matters differently, reducing it to sexism to discredit them is CIA behavior.

Elaine has stories of members getting jumped if they acted disrespectful towards women, then they moved on and focused on the work.

13451819, Its kinda weird how black men have to die for the sins of every celebrity.
Posted by Brotha Sun, Fri Jan-14-22 06:08 PM
Whenever a black female celebrity says something bigoted (Azealia, Doja cat etc) or downright homophobic (Yung Miami vowing to beat her future son if he was gay) its never considered an essential trait of black womanhood. Its hawked over for a few weeks maybe then forgotten.

On the flipside, a conservative black comedian like dave chapelle who has a pretty long record of anti black comedy, grew up middle class, and has an asian wife, is somehow representative of black men and requires an article in Vanity Fair?

Who is the target audience exactly? Clearly not black people.

Everything in this article is something that has been regurgitated for 40+ years and isn't adding anything new to the discussion.

Im not interested in what she has to say about black people when her father worked for one of the most corrupt police departments in the country (Chicago) for 20+ years. A family of agents.

It is learned behavior. Tethering people together and then throwing a negative blanket over them and considering your work done? Yeah, we've seen that before. I wish we could ask INDIVIDUALs to do better without having to blanket as a way to 'strengthen the argument'.

fixed that for you.

Black men are the boogieman to:

Gun Nuts
Cops
Feminists
The gay community
The trans community
law & order conservatives
liberal democrats

It's almost like there's an entire culture built on anti-Black misandry in this country or something

that is what you mean when you use the word "die"

www.engadgethd.com - the other stuff i'm looking at
13451910, not quite.
Posted by Brotha Sun, Sun Jan-16-22 04:57 PM
By "die," i mean become scapegoats and used as a stepping block for liberal blacks performing for white audiences.

theres valid critiques to make of black men, but if your goal is to make black men hear your message how is Vanity Fair the proper medium? She has the platform to pitch this story to a black publication and easily get it passed.

Why doesn't any data corroborate the claims made in the article? How are black men suppose to be held accountable for disproportionate harm and hatefulness that cant be verified? Couples of all sexual orientations have high rates of violence and abuse in the black community. There's countless factors that lead to that and trivializing it as "men wanting to align with white patriarchy" is counter productive. It leads to a major blind spot when intervening with male victims of ipv, and same sex female couples who are in a cycle of abuse.

There's countless studies showing black men are the most progressive group of men in america and have similar attitudes towards feminism as black women do.

13451918, ah, you like "valid critiques"
Posted by Rjcc, Sun Jan-16-22 10:55 PM
but you've never found one

and the only one you want to discuss is the one printed in vanity fair
