like 2-3 weeks for the next episode which sucks
13450394, i love it, even though alot of the acting is horrible
Posted by Mynoriti, Mon Dec-20-21 03:52 AM
the one white detective who looks like the lost baldwin bother..

the female professor - fine as all get out but soap level actress at best.

Don't Be A Menace ruined Larenz Tate's brother for me forever. he's impossible to take seriously

at the top of that list is the new kingpin dude/Cane's daddy.. he's something out of a music video..

Tariq's always been pretty bad. There are others who are doing a good job.

all that said, i still love it. last episode was nuts

Just binged this. Probably my favorite series of the year. William Jackson Harper and Jessica Williams had wonderful chemistry. Comedian CP and Punkee Johnson stole almost every scene. Damn good writing.

13450964, I Though The Regular "Wonder Years" Was Boring
Posted by Dj Joey Joe, Sun Jan-02-22 01:30 PM
The urban revamp version is just as boring as the original, never understood what hollywood liked about the late 60's to late 70's era of America, every few years another show comes out glorifying this era with the so-called wholesome family in suburban neighborhood through the kid or young adult p.o.v. & shit.

I don't like the "Goldbergs", I thought the first two seasons of "Fresh Off The Boat" after that it got terrible, I hated "That 70's Show", "Astronaut Wives Club, "The Kids Are Alright", "American Dreams", etc. & so on, didn't like those at all.

13450419, Struggling to finish Harlem on AmazonPrime.
Posted by Numba_33, Mon Dec-20-21 11:51 AM
I think I've shut the show off three or four times while attempting to binge it out of complete disgust. I highly doubt I'll be able to completely finish it to be honest. I watched 6 out of the 10 episodes if memory serves me correct.

Before that, I binged both seasons of South Side from HBO Max. The first season was better than the second IMO, but I like how creative the storylines and characters are. The conservative leaning black cop character is by far my favorite character.
13450423, Harlem is like that show that watched every other show

that shit was terible.

And I agree that the first season of South Side was better than the second. They didn't do a whole lot with Simon and Q this season. Officers Turner and Goodnight were hilarious as per usual, but even Goodnight didn't really have much to do.
Really hope they get renewed for seasons 3-4-5.

2 episodes into Grand Crew and I'm already losing interest, its like their trying to do white humor with a black cast and I don't think that will appeal to either demographic

Posted by Numba_33, Mon Jan-03-22 04:42 PM
that show is written by women for women and that's part of the reason it doesn't click with me.

Another part of me thinks that's a pretty sexist stance because some of the outlandish stuff on the show that disgusts me shouldn't be tolerable by any gender.
13451014, What part disgusted you?

13451015, From memory's sake, mainly the over the top sexual situations.
Posted by Numba_33, Mon Jan-03-22 04:57 PM
Seemed like the show wanted to exaggerate certain situations just for attention's sake or to get cheap laughs. I felt bad for some of actresses while watching the show because they deserved better material. For the most part, they didn't take me out of the show while watching it due to subpar acting; the subpar writing did.
13451020, I had less of an issue with sexual humor

13451714, Grand Crew....a couple of thoughts
Posted by Buddy_Gilapagos, Thu Jan-13-22 03:12 PM
My first thought was that it was written by white people. It seems that it was not. It seems in an effort to make a show that shows "different" type of black people, they made a show that doesn't resemble black people at all to me.

Secondly, and a more sensitive matter, is it me or do all these guy character read as gay? BTW, that would have been a more interesting and different show.

Look I am 45, not the target demo, so maybe this is what 30 year olds identify with so correct me if I am wrong.

I feel like they’re tryna catch the Brooklyn 99 tone but don’t really have the actors to pull it off. Half of them feel like they’re drowning in the dialogue. Only Carl Tart and Justin Cunningham seem comfortable.

I also crack up how every young girl on the show cant resist Tariq and just throw it at him.

50 cent coming back like Obi Wan to give Tariq advice..

i was whatever on last season but i've enjoyed this season so much. I guess it's a matter of knowing what i'm getting from it

it's impossible to keep up with every thread of betrayal until you realize everyone is literally doing something behind everyone's back, if not outright betraying them.

and for some weird reason, none of them feel they can function without Tariq St Patrick

The down-and-out politician gets back on his feet and very quickly gets a job, not only at the same school as the hot teacher who is banging the basketball star and co-worker who got murdered by her student, Ghost’s son- he's teaching the class WITH her.

I love the gangsta white friend, just a ridiculous character, but probably my favorite.

I expected the show to be kinda weird, judging from the comments in here... but it's.... just a comedy show, being a comedy show. And it happens to star Black ppl. I genuinely didn't see the problem. It wasn't disrespecting us from what I saw. I actually kind of appreciated its direction.
13491066, i never understand why that matters
Posted by Damali, Sun Sep-10-23 10:13 PM
its a fictional show. and its absurd. why shouldn't black actors play roles that don't exactly follow what we normally see in regards to Black life? why can't Black characters be written beyond what we think we know?

13453865, I watched the first episode the other night
Posted by Hitokiri, Thu Feb-17-22 09:22 AM
And I was actually very surprised by how good it is!
Everything I saw in the the promo down to the images used on Peacock told me that I was going to hate this shit. I put it on completely expecting to turn it off after like 20 minutes... but that shit is actually quite good. Will clearly pumped a lot of money into this show, and that's, imo, a part of what makes it good. So often they try to make shows on a shoestring budget and they turn out really bad. That's not to say this one isn't without it's problems. That was a whoooole lot to pack into a single episode that basically takes place over like 48 hours. It's super dramatic at every turn, Will's romance is super rushed, and they need to explain how this lawyer appears to be a goddamn billionaire. But they are true to the original in a lot of ways, while modernizing it in a lot of really good ways. It feels like it was written by Black folks. The kids, talk like kids talk; the updates to Jazz and Geoffrey are well done. I'ma keep watching.
13453871, I don’t think they need to explain how the family came up on this money
Posted by legsdiamond, Thu Feb-17-22 10:03 AM
They didn’t explain it the first time around… lol.

I’m actually looking for ways to watch this or will binge it once the season ends.

A friend from VCU works in the industry and received a swag bag with the tan Jordans he has on in the promo and a hand painted basketball.

and they gave VCU a shout out in the first ep!! I’m sure dude asked them to use our school when it came to the scholarship.
13453899, Sure they don't have to explain it...
Posted by Hitokiri, Thu Feb-17-22 02:23 PM
But in the OG series the family was rich obviously, but in this one, they're on a whole 'nother level. Like that level of wealth doesn't make sense.

Very open minded of Apple TV to show a black show that had the lead character being an old man with dementia. The subject matter, the majority black cast, and the fact the show is only for one season is pretty open minded for a major network.

recently:

Kim's Convenience - discovered that by accident on Netflix. watched all 5 seasons. really nice sitcom. simu leiu was on that before he blew up w/ shang chi

lupin - all (however many) seasons, i think 2, on netflix. french series (crime / heist joint) featuring omar sy. first series we ever watched about Black french people. fux w/ it.

Man Like Mobeen - bri'ish telly sitcom. came up on that early this summer and binged through it. that was interesting. funny series about a pakistani ex thug in the hood in england trying to stay on the straight and narrow and raise his little sister.

Only Murders In the Building (hulu) - 2nd season now. still on. this has replaced our get a glass of wine and chill show (was Grand Cru + Abbott Elementary before their seasons ).

the witcher - netflix

the Orville (hulu) - 3rd season. this show is really good. star trek, but more irreverent, but they be hitting on some serious shit. and the production values are really dope for a kind of star trek comedy.

the expanse - (season 6 was over last year. been finished that. but it's really one of the best modern sf series ever. great writing, production values, acting, and it's very smart. described as GoT in space, but long before George RR Martin ran out of gas and the series went to shit). it's on amazon prime. every season is dope.

I already replied regarding how I feel about Nova ... ugh! She is an awful character, and I am still fast forwarding her scenes. Thank goodness for the ability to fast forward.

pretty good and different so far, and I like the random cameos by "big time" celebrities like Jon Hamm, I was already a fan but now I'm even more of a fan seeing him in something like this.

I guess the original season was in 2018 and they're just putting out S2 episodes now
13475280, I tried it, it seemed kind of "okayplayery" at first...

I loved the book Passing, but hated the movie adaptation. I really hope that I don’t end up hating this too 😕

Our black authors and their stories deserve better. That is why sometimes I want more Toni Morrison adaptations other that Beloved, but at the same time I don’t.
13476910, Are you bothered by the departures from the book. (Spoilers)
Posted by Buddy_Gilapagos, Thu Jan-19-23 09:14 AM
I just finished the book because its been on my list forever and I knew if I watched the show I would never read it.

There was something that bothered both me and my wife about the book in particular. That is, how could she be so in love with her white husband when she experienced slavery?

It kind of feels like the series will be addressing it by, not giving her a husband and making Kevin just some guy she just met. I just think he isn't going to be around to the end in the series like he was in book. IDK, just guessing.

I've seen just one ep but wondering if I want to see the rest, the book kept me mad at white people for a minute.

Had some good laughs, so far. The folks are so beautiful. I love how they've all aged and grown, even as a fictional crew, but real people. Reminds me so much of my inner circle of guys and ladies that I've know since high school/college. Oh and Sanaa Lathan...sheesh!!!
13475467, Knocked out the season in one day...LOVED this...
Posted by Dstl1, Fri Dec-23-22 08:45 PM
so many LOL moments and the crew were all really good. Shelbe stole the show for wife and I. She killed every scene she was in and that's coming from a Regina Hall Stan. Really enjoyable watch.
13475804, The Best Man joint was GOOD! I watched the entire season twice…

then went back and watch the OG Best Man and Best Man Holiday.

I feel like those of us that have been around for a minute have literally grown up with these characters and actors in these films as well as others.

Seeing them deal with a lot of situations we are was cool.

All the women looked great especially Nia Long!

Things I didn’t like
- literally everything with Riri. That’s about 40 mins I wished they would’ve just cut out. Movie gets a lot better once they finally go to Talokan
- Shuri as BP. Sorry I couldn’t buy it when it was time to scrap

Things i did like
- Shuri as a character. I really didn’t think she could carry the movie and she did very well
- her ancestral plane vision. I won’t spoil that but business definitely picked up there
- much better cgi than the first one

Id give this one a 6.5/10. Probably a mid tier marvel movie.
First one was probably a 9/10

The Jim and Pam thing is REAL, lol. As a stan of The Office, I'm slightly annoyed by it but at least it guarantees us more show...in the short term, anyway.
13483330, Grand Crew S2E8 was kinda sad with Fay leave I still don’t really care…
Posted by ThaTruth, Sun Apr-23-23 08:06 AM
for that show I just watch it because the episodes or short and the actors are black.

I still think it intentionally parodies black culture and I’m not sure how I feel about that but have cared enough to look up who the writers are.

It’s still hard to see the characters actual friends as a collective they all seem like that one black person that has all white friends

Overall it seems like this season went fast I may go back and watch it again lol
13483352, I think you hit the nail on the head
Posted by legsdiamond, Mon Apr-24-23 07:58 AM
I’ve tried at least 3 times to watch and I can’t seem to grt through half an episode before turning it off.

They all sound like the Black friend who has all white friends.. lol

its their voices.. lol…

If I closed my eyes they sound like a Big Bang Theory.

I finally got around to watching it, and the narrator does a great job of framing things by adding the "you had to be there" context. He speaks of how a lot of the subject matter affected his grandparents, parents, and himself. One of the best documentaries I've watched.

way its lookin aint gonna be no time soon but when rock gets to be studied like we do the baroque period this should be in there somewhere.

uniquely african-american, american story (culture, race, religion, politics, etc etc, had all that shit). wild that it almost relegates the development of one of (black) americas great art forms to pretext.

thought it was interesting that the history of rock is always framed by rebellion, and sexual rebellion in particular, but i never really hear about that rebellion within the gender role/homosexuality context. lil richard is a comically ironic omission.

but yea enjoyed it. the panelists had some good insight (especially enjoyed the ethnomusicologist). only gripe was all the dramatic space graphics n shit was getting out of control (like aiight we get it).

>....wop bop a loo bop!..cam n nem would lose they MINDS.

but Pete Rock reblogged a clip from what I'm assuming was the same documentary talking about the true lyrics behind the chorus for Tooty Fruity. I think it would be an understatement to say the real lyrics were pretty damn wild, especially considering what I'm assuming were pretty repressive times back then. I almost want to watch the rest of the documentary just to know how much his band members took those lyrics in and were willing to run with the song as it played live.

Posted by 3CardMolly, Wed Jul-12-23 02:26 PM
It started strong but some of character flaws are a bit underwhelming, mainly the bald guy. It’s like he’s consistently weak and a buffoon yet everyone keeps giving him more responsibility.

The daughter appears to be a 35yr old playing the role of a teen, not believable at all.

On the other hand it’s nice to see BET not keep to their usual formula of shows.
13488426, definitely some serious flaws.. lol.
Posted by legsdiamond, Thu Jul-13-23 03:11 PM
dirty cop called someone a jerkoff. My wife was like “isn’t the correct term Jagoff?”

I don’t mind the bald guy being the fuck up. That part is intentional and hilarious.

The lady cop in charge of the investigation. She came in way too hot and way too exaggerated. The way she curses is forced and comically bad.

Yes, the daughter old af and acting dumb af. I get the dead body would be triggering but once its explained that he tried to kill her pops you would you think she would stfu instead of acting like he was killed because he was your boyfriend.

but none of this is enough to get me to turn it off. I’m enjoying it.

I was trying to squeeze in episode 5 last night and it didn’t show up until 12:01 after
my trial ended even though it was dated for 7/13.

Its an app tho, so its not like they had to wait for it to air before releasing it.

its definitely a Tyler Perry piano script.

Dude just said “are you bisexual” and the other dude had a “you know what I did last night?”. look on his face.

This after seeing commercials where his woman said she would beat up anyone that messed with her man.

It definitely feels like a network TV drama. It was a little heavy-handed but I like the message and the theme of the show. It kinda made me think about "Scandal" except for her team doesn't come across as unlikeable (yet). I find myself rooting for them (cliche warning...they've got heart). And the big twist is a bit creepy but it's good enough to make me curious about how it'll play out.

Overall, it's not terrible. It won't blow your mind or anything. I'll probably continue watching it for now.

I think Oprah is involved in Black Cake and while that show is good as hell they also have the daughter involved in an abusive relationship with a white dude. Queen Sugar also had the Black activist with a white man fetish.

H.E.R. was super fine, and Tasia was thiccc and filling out that clothing-of-the-time.
13499478, It was okay. I still prefer the original. The end when her kids come

back still made me cry.
13496159, Anyone else watch Black Cake and hate the present day daughter?
Posted by legsdiamond, Wed Dec-27-23 12:48 PM
She was so fucking self centered it was unreal.

No spoilers but ole girl actually heard her mothers trauma about how another sibling was brought into the world and said “ohhh, so all that was about me???”

I legit hate her as a person.. lol. She played that role too well.

It was an interesting lil suspense somewhat horror movie... but horror in more of the Get Out sense without a bunch of gore or killing. You might like it if you're into that sort of movie. Wasn't the greatest movie ever, but I enjoyed it.

13498515, I started rewatching Family Matters, about a month ago.
Posted by Dstl1, Sun Feb-04-24 09:51 AM
It’s been MANY years since I’ve watched even a single episode, so I started from the beginning. It’s was painfully slow and kinda hard to get through the first part of Season 1 before Urkel showed up. Jaleel White and Kellie Shanygne Williams, who played Laura, were absolute gems. I dunno if it was by direction or him just trying to find his style, but Reginald VelJohnson had a really overdone, slapstick type thing going on with his acting..bugged out eyes and crazy smiles…it was weird. He toned it down a bit as the show went on. Thelma Hopkins character was the worst, lol. I know it was the late 80s, early 90s…but, Eddie’s whole style was trash. The show as a whole, is pretty damn enjoyable. I find myself legit LOL, multiple times a show…mostly due to Jaleel’s brilliance. I wonder why he never really blew up, afterwards. Maybe he got typecast on some zany, physical comedy steez.
13498726, I think at the time they were try to compete with Cosby

>How can you not be afraid of your mama after that shit?

Right she was like "you're coming with us." and Kanan couldn't say shit but comply
13499859, Imagine how traumatizing that was on multiple levels.
Posted by Boogie Stimuli, Sun Feb-25-24 09:10 AM
I think we're all watching the show to see how he became so coldhearted later down the line. I think they're starting to do a good job of making us understand.
13499316, In Your Dreams (2023) <- really good African scifi

this shit was great.

Western movie about a Black woman.

Letitia Wright plays a Buffalo Soldier 5 years after the civil war. Trying to get her land out west.

Also think it was Omar’s last gig before he passed.

13500103, Finally finished Snowfall.

13501032, mad didn’t make the cut. Went from 92 to 95
Posted by legsdiamond, Fri Mar-22-24 12:58 PM
and yeah, that last year was wack when they cut off the streets

but 1994 was peak. I brought my peeps from the Burgh. I had never even heard of it until 92.

Anyway, the doc was aight, I appreciated the founders getting shine and I remember when it turned ugly and dudes were violating and women were selling dome in minivans.

More Freak less Nik in 95.

13502075, BET+ The Reading, Darria from Detroit and Churchy
Posted by Pamalama, Sun Apr-14-24 09:49 PM
Using this free trial to catch up on some things

The Reading was quite entertaining You can tell Monique had some fun with this one. Charnele Brown (Kimberly from a Different World) was damn near unrecognizable.

Darria is pretty good too. The cameos are quite surprising in how they are used.

Churchy ain’t half bad either. Had some legit laughs.
