13446787, Name some wedge issues between Black PPL and Black Progressives
Posted by Buddy_Gilapagos, Wed Nov-03-21 01:52 PM
And by Wedge Issues I mean issues that Black People In General and Black Progressives are very far apart on. I got:

Dave Chappelle
Chris Brown
Defund the Police
Tyler Perry
The South as a place to live

Despite Dave Chappelle, I do not think LGBTQ Rights in general are still the wedge issue it once was thankfully. (most recent survey I could find. https://www.nbcnews.com/feature/nbc-out/support-gay-marriage-reaches-all-time-high-survey-finds-n1244143).

What else we got?

I hate that Pop culture has such a huge impact on how we relate to each other.....
It's sad really...

I don't agree with The South as a place to live being a wedge issue.

Everybody got country cousins...it's part of the Black Experience.

The R. Kelly doc flipped a bunch of people, but there's still plenty of "but (insert white man)!" types out there

when she was underage. It's pretty hard to ignore that

Bill Cosby has however many dozens of unrelated Ladies making similar claims against him over a large period of time, but there's no video of him engaging in the crime he's accused of (Some people would still support him anyhow)

*And of Course by R Kelly, I mean his Brother
13446894, Absolutely. All kinds of Black folks are defending Bill...
Posted by soulfunk, Thu Nov-04-21 08:25 AM
Many of which really surprised me - and across all demographics. Of course there are some that didn't surprise me at all...the woke Black folks who defend anything Black, the conspiracy theory/anti-vax Black folks who felt that "they" were out to get Bill, the older Black folks like my parents who were quiet during the trial and conviction but were looking for ANY reason to defend him - and when it was overturned they jumped in to defend, etc.

But besides all those groups I had some friends who I typically see eye-to-eye with (progressive, logic-based, non-emotional reasoning) that shocked me in their defense of Cosby, despite the evidence out there - similarity across numerous accusations, and what he actually admitted to doing.
13446799, the south as a place to live? huh??
Posted by seasoned vet, Wed Nov-03-21 02:12 PM
sure, the south has its issues, but the only blk folks looking at living in the entire south as a negative are east coast blacks that view living in squalor as a flex just because its in NY/ DC/ Philly, etc

that shit is not the wedge you think it is

my moms family is from georgia and i'm in savannah now. i think
it's probably a better place to retire but i haven't been here long
enough to form a solid opinion yet. i've talked with a couple of
people that made a similar move (to atlanta) and they ultimately went
back home because of family and 'the south'. i can see why people
would not like it but, there's pros/cons with everything and the north
is not necessarily better...just more people packed/tossed into the
rat race.

it was always a head scratcher for me when I went back home

Especially since I’m from western PA.

“Rednecks and confederate flags!!! Hell nah”

Same Black people back home live in towns that are 90% white, filled with rednecks who call their white gf’s n#gger lovers.

when they finally leave home to visit the south they are mesmerized by all this Blackness

And I remember we had this convo almost word for word.

Me complaining about hating it here, him loving it here because there are actually black people here. From that perspective I get it. For me it’s nothing special though. The more I travel the more I feel suffocated by race and culture in the south.
13447894, I'd argue that the South is only a better place
Posted by afrogirl_lost, Sun Nov-14-21 06:27 AM
if you're Black and middle/upper class. I don't think working class or poor Black folks would necessarily fare better in the South due to the lack of unions, the Jim Crow esq welfare system, the limited public transit systems etc. I know of a lot of working class Black folks who moved to places like Atlanta and Charlotte and ended up in similar or worse conditions than they already had up North.

I personally would never live in the South because I come from a Northern family. We've been in Philly since the 1700s and I love it up here. All Black Northerners don't hate the South. Some of us simply have strong roots in Northern cities that we want to maintain. Why should we let gentrification win?
13447896, public transportation is definitely lacking in the South

13447113, I don't like grits...
Posted by Marbles, Fri Nov-05-21 12:12 PM

...but my people are from Savannah & I've seen folks eat them a few different ways. I've seen some folks put sugar in their grits. I've seen some folks with a bunch of butter. My grandmother used to make grits with shrimp & gravy.

13447144, neither did I until I married a southern woman

My little brother used to kill his shrimp, grits & gravy as a kid. I preferred Grandma's fried catfish.

there is a comedian on SM KevOnStage who posted he put sugar on grits and he got a good 3 weeks of serious traffic out of that bit

13447007, you know he doesn't actually talk to people
Posted by Rjcc, Thu Nov-04-21 03:49 PM
he just made this up after reading some shade room posts on IG

13447073, Fam do you just want to post the IG post you keep referring to?
Posted by Buddy_Gilapagos, Fri Nov-05-21 08:56 AM
Because I am not on IG and don't know what you are talking about.

It would be easier if folks know what you are talking about.

13447115, I have no idea what social media platforms you use
Posted by Rjcc, Fri Nov-05-21 12:35 PM
because I don't stalk people's social media like a creep for an entire decade

you seem to talk about whatever's popular on IG

maybe you don't use it and that's just the level of your intellect, but I think more highly of you than that

13448219, What does that mean? I feel like I've been seeing that word used a lot

a way of playing into stereotypes in order to fit in. I'm using 'performative' as it relates to blackness, but it's wearing a mask to gain more acceptance. however, wearing a mask isn't exclusive to blackness.

for the record, I was kidding when I made that initial comment.

13448454, How about "Socialism" ?
Posted by Amritsar, Sat Nov-20-21 08:36 AM
Demoratic Socialism as a platform.

My gut feeling (without any research or anything) is that most of Black america rejected "Democratic Socialism" at the same rate of rejection as any other demographic in this country.

Sure its popular among all young progressives (black progressives included). But I see the term as a wedge between progressives and the rest of Offline America.

13448506, For sure.
