I dunno why I have fun reducing this to a series of clichés, but the way things are panning out I wouldn't be surprised if it turns out he shoved her off some ledge unintentionally, went catatonic and just drove home, then as a nature guy decided he needed to go get swallowed by an alligator or whatever same as dude in Alaska with the bears (accidentally).

For the families' sakes I hope they find the kid out there and he answers to whatever happened (especially since the frequent use of "remains" rather than "body" suggests...Bob Durst level efforts to cover up what happened) but yea, at this point this is the premise of a limited series on FX as much as a real life scenario. The fixation on its facts is less and less weird every day.
