I got no real love for Newsom, but if he's recalled, we're in some really messy s**t. Like you said, literally ANY Repub is bad, even Faulconer. And like Cilizza said in the link, the "energy disparity" is trending poorly for Newsom. I still feel like he's gonna squeek it out, but I'm not as confident of that as I was months ago.
