13438504, Is DaBaby career over?
Posted by rdhull, Thu Jul-29-21 02:26 PM
Is he set to be cancelled? Not that I gaf I’m just asking
13438505, How many rappers have been truly cancelled over homophobia?
Posted by Frank Longo, Thu Jul-29-21 02:31 PM
I've gotta think the number is very close to zero, if not zero.
13438507, The is so and so canceled feels like a wild dishonest question
Posted by MEAT, Thu Jul-29-21 02:33 PM
Folks don't really care about this folks, they're really asking how THEY'LL be judged for still rocking with this folks.
13438598, there it is.

The answer is nobody, obviously.

And yes times change, and art usually doesn’t age well…but the fact that Tribe can sustain rampant homophobia proves hip hop is kinda exempt from most “cancellations”
13438539, was never released bruh..only hard rap heads know that one

I heard some company he was supposed to be doing a deal with dropped him, at least for the immediate future I can't see too many major brands wanting to be associated with him.

People have short memories so this might all blow over (Unless he continues just going out of his way to draw heat)

almost feels like twitter ruined enough careers and they moved on to other shit.

that country singer said the n word and sold more records.

This may have no impact at all on his sales/shows.. but he won’t be doing any award shows or hollywood for a minute.

just like Eminem did..

and once he pays his respects he will go back to making music about killing Black men and harming Black women

(no idea what his content is about but it always cracks me up how rappers can murder 100 of Black men in their songs and its celebrated)

13438567, But why?

Honest question.

Eminem used gay stereotypes and slurs. Elton John IMMEDIATELY defended him.

Is it that DaBaby actually seems like he genuinely has disdain for gay people, and that Em was using vernacular that was more socially acceptable 20+ years ago?
13438576, I explained why in many times already

13438582, Em is white. that's one.
Posted by tariqhu, Thu Jul-29-21 05:59 PM
two, Em was a huge artist at the time. Elton also got some benefit from doing that song live with him.

Dababy is black and not that kinda famous. There's no gain for EJ to support/help/work with Dababy.

Like he’s fine.

And I don’t want to be the arbiter of what people should or shouldn’t say. It’s OBVIOUSLY stupid and he deserves blowback at minimum.

But it’s hard to ignore how much homophobia and misogyny are in hip hop as a whole. Granted, most is from forever ago…but culturally it’s had issues with acceptance. I dunno how old this dude is, but he is clearly young and stupid. I’m hoping it’s a learning experience especially given the artists he’s worked with.

Ultimately…”cancellations” are sorta bullshit. Chris Brown is still working. Support the dude or don’t but this seems to be his first brush with controversy so let’s see how he handles it.

I think todays hip-hop is culturally accepting of everything. Look at how Kanye is still sort of revered even after revealing mental health issues. Prior decades people would have seen him as soft even before the ax's and talking about the mental health. And we also have the new era with Drake (lol), Frank Ocean, Tyler..all with sexually ambiguous reps etc. Todays hip hop is accepting and that shit Baby said was some archaic deplorable shit that isn't gonna fly today. Cmon now.
13438548, You do understand I’m not sticking up for him right?
Posted by Ryan M, Thu Jul-29-21 03:24 PM
I don’t think his career should be over.
I don’t think his career IS over.

You’re right about hip hop being more accepting now than it’s ever been - no question! Society as a whole is. There is obviously way more work to be done there but things are in general better now than they’ve been as far as understandings go.

I just think people should be judged more on how they handle the mistake than the mistake itself. And if he KEEPS doubling down? Then sure. End the career. But I just don’t think it should be that simple - otherwise we’d have lost so many artists along the way. That’s all.

And again - not even a fan of his. Fair is fair tho.
13438562, yes..and Im stating he wont be as forgiven as you think, thats all

13438565, And you could be right.
Posted by Ryan M, Thu Jul-29-21 04:09 PM
We're in a different era where these things are rightfully called out more.

But the interesting thing in when someone gets "cancelled" is how socially acceptable it is to still say you're a fan. DaBaby seems like his fanbase doesn't care as much the rest of the public.

13438551, Not for me to say
Posted by Ryan M, Thu Jul-29-21 03:26 PM
But actually physically assaulting a woman is as cancel worthy as shit gets outside of like…pedophilia or rape.

And while I’m not a fan of comparing indiscretions - he actually hurt someone and didn’t JUST say dumb shit.

So…I dunno.
13438553, as long as you can make the industry money
Posted by legsdiamond, Thu Jul-29-21 03:30 PM
you won’t be “canceled”

R Kelly’s sex tape taught me that. I just knew dude was going to jail when that tape came out. My boy was like “nope, he is still writing hits”

and he was correct. Kellz aint get got until his career got cold.

Now I have no idea if this dude is a legit cash cow for the industry but if he is, he will not be cancelled.

exactly and everybody in the industry knew what he was doing and didn't try to publicly distance themselves until after he got caught but were still working with him behind the scenes
13438563, Well, that is a good point - BUT
Posted by Ryan M, Thu Jul-29-21 04:03 PM
It's impossible to compare this, but R Kelly hit this exact crest of the heights of the music industry and the lows of social media. The world is a LOT smaller now. Information, and movements, move a lot faster these days. He was certainly making people a lot of money, and in kind they turned a blind eye - but the way things work now? It'd have picked up steam and hit critical mass a lot quicker than if he came up in the 90s.

I understand he did some stupid ass shit 10+ years ago when he was 18 or 19, should he not be allowed to earn a living EVER again?

didn't we just see a cop barely get 20 years after being convicted of murder on camera?
13438564, Well...
Posted by Ryan M, Thu Jul-29-21 04:07 PM
A few things -

I think there's a clear distinction between using slurs and physical assault.

I also think he (and the cop for that matter) do deserve to make a living. That doesn't mean they deserve privileged positions to get that money.

Anyway - Chris Brown clearly sucks as a person. But if people WANT to support him, they should be able to. The cop literally murdered someone - that's a LITTLE different, isn't it?

Posted by Buddy_Gilapagos, Thu Jul-29-21 03:14 PM
Like there was something fresh and interesting about him when he first came out, and he peaked around the time he did that BET award performance with a cops foot on his neck.

But he has just proven himself to be just not that smart or clever of a dude. Doesn't help his sound is mad repetitive.

The weird thing about his rant it was mad p'cific. Like what made him say what he said at that very moment? Like was there some sort of incident?

At any rate, this IDK is way more interesting to me these days.

somebody finally stepped in. his tone is still wrong.

13438789, pretty bad tbh
Posted by Nopayne, Mon Aug-02-21 07:20 PM
He starts off with a defensive tone which makes it seem insincere.
13438795, His publicist should have made him leave the first paragraph off

You're not going to cut much ice with "I'm the victim because you guys were mean to me! Oh yeah... I'm sorry about what I said."

To not double down on it and make the situation worse. Now even an apology doesn’t seem to save his career. They dog walking him rn
13438918, he got dropped by 3 more festivals today.

https://twitter.com/XXL/status/1422614810202624001

i thought some people were over exaggerating but his career might not really recover from this (close to the level he is at now). plenty of people apologize, make amends and move on, and turn out just fine in the end. but he doubled down so much that i think part of his fan base will sour on him giving in. especially at the degree hes gonna have to publicly atone (and pander) because that lukewarm apology clearly aint cutting it.

i also think he doesnt really have that cultish hard fan support like chris brown, kanye, or even nba youngboy, etc. hes more of a biproduct of being 'hot' at the moment and a ton of white people riding whats trendy. and consumers like that have no problem moving on once youre not on that pedestal anymore.
13438920, Side note: I'm kind of amazed that there are **this** many festivals...
Posted by mrhood75, Tue Aug-03-21 06:38 PM
...over the summer. And if they are all like Lollapalooza, this is going to get ugly.
13438925, this is where most of the live performance business is now.
Posted by Reeq, Tue Aug-03-21 07:13 PM
the overwhelming majority of these artists...even the stars...cant headline arenas with their own tours nowadays. even before the pandemic...there were a lot of underwhelming pre-sales and canceled tours.

this is basically the only reliable business model for a lot of them (outside of smaller halls/clubs with cheap ticket prices).
13438923, Chris Brown had a good 2 or 3 years before he bounced back
Posted by legsdiamond, Tue Aug-03-21 06:57 PM
and it wasn’t instant.

this dude aint as big as Brown but he can recover in a year if he puts in the work.

Doubt he will do it.

13438926, He'll do everything his fixers tell him to do.
Posted by Teknontheou, Tue Aug-03-21 07:15 PM
He doesn't strike me as irrational.

He'll come back first with us, because Black people weren't trying to cancel him over this in the first place. The tough part will b getting back in the good graces of his white, mainstream audience. That's what will take a few years.
13438927, .
Posted by Teknontheou, Tue Aug-03-21 07:15 PM
.
13438928, chris brown bounced back *because* of the fan support.
Posted by Reeq, Tue Aug-03-21 07:26 PM
his fans kept him afloat while he was functionally blackballed (his albums were literally taken out of some retail chains). he released like 4 or 5 free mixtapes straight to his fans and *they* forced radio to play shit like deuces and no bullshit because of the overwhelming demand.

he was back on radio/billboard after only like a year after the rihanna incident.

deuces was barely a top 100 record when it dropped and it grinded its way to #1 with no industry/label support. all fan backing.

things didnt just blow over. his fans said fuck everybody else and imposed their will on the business.

dababy doesnt have that type of army with him. not even close.

13438932, true, but my point is a week after the Rihanna incident
Posted by legsdiamond, Tue Aug-03-21 08:14 PM
no one was talking about Chris Brown bouncing back. We were still talking about how he would never recover.

Its hasn’t even been a week so of course it looks like its a wrap for him. He is still on his way down and hasn’t hit bottom.

Give it a month or 2 and people will move on to something else

He needs better beats anyway. Might be the perfect time for him to find some hungry producers who are looking for work. This is what my people in LA did with Chris Brown. When Chirs Brown was down and out my homie from VA convinced him to come to his studio. This is how songs like Beautiful People, Look At Me Now and She Aint You happened.

Dababy aint no Chris Brown and lets be real, Chris Browm never got back all the way back to the height of stardom he had in 2009. He turned into a “bad boy”
and kinda said fuck it and just did his thing.

I will admit I have no idea how popular Dababy was prior to this but I think he can continue making music after things cool off.

13438959, right, CB was more talented and about 10yrs younger
Posted by ThaTruth, Wed Aug-04-21 08:34 AM
13438996, CB was looking like the next MJ with that MTV performance
Posted by legsdiamond, Wed Aug-04-21 01:36 PM
dude was about to be in the number 1 spot.

CB was kinda clean cut too before the incident.

Afterwards CB embraced the bad boy role.

Dababy is hard to predict because he was already the “bad guy” and people liked his image. He should’ve stuck to shitting on Black men and women.. that is acceptable in America.
13438930, his talent/production

Posted by PROMO, Wed Aug-04-21 10:05 AM
When artists have FIRE FIRE music, they can basically come back from anything because extreme talent and art is something most humans will make excuses to enjoy.

not sure if the Baby is a good enough artist to get that.

like, he not gonna just go away, but i doubt he'll ever get back, or even really close, to the level he reached previously

that would be my guess.

If Jay said something about gay folks on social media in 2021 Beyonce would prolly cancel his ass.

13439161, Did Buju Banton Ever Get Flack For "Boom Bye Bye"?
Posted by Dj Joey Joe, Thu Aug-05-21 10:25 PM
When it comes to reggae or even Jamaicans, they will always express their negative feeling towards homophobia, "batty boy" is usually the term used for gays in Jamaica and reggae & dancehall artists use it just like how rappers call another rapper they dislike a faggot or them being pussy.

Anyway when the song "Boom Bye Bye" came out it was a big big hit but I doubt many knew what the song was really about, when one of my friends who was a DJ who could understand reggae artists' patois lingo told me what they song was saying I was shocked, but regardless for years it was always played apart of the classic dancehall sets; I'm just wondering did Buju Banton ever get flack for it or was it just like how the 90's had so many rap songs that did things like that that it was shrugged off as a take it or leave it situation cause the song was already a big hit?

I had always assumed that he had some long brewing fued with whoever he shot. Not that it was someone he thought was reckless eyeballing him.

Story also shows that everyone carrying means more random gun violence.

Can you imagine listening to the radio and hearing the person who murdered your child all the time and even bragging about it?!?!

Black Lives sure don't seem to matter at times.
