13435323, Are you letting Amazon share your wifi?
Posted by legsdiamond, Wed Jun-16-21 10:08 AM
Its called Sidewalk and Amazon just flipped the switch on June 8th. Everyone automatically opted in and has to opt out.

But no one is really discussing it.

So if you have a Ring or Echo device that shit is sharing a slice of your wifi with the block.

13435343, another encroachment on privacy in the name of convenience.

my guess is that a few folks will make a stir about it, especially since Amazon is being sneaky about it, but the majority of folks with connected devices won't be mad.

privacy is really a thing of the past.
13435345, the automatic opt-in is crazy
Posted by legsdiamond, Wed Jun-16-21 11:32 AM
I didn’t even know it was a thing until someone at work pointed it out.

Did the devices or Amazon notify users?
13435350, I don't have any of those type devices in my place.
Posted by tariqhu, Wed Jun-16-21 11:46 AM
I'm guessing that sent something about, but most folks aint reading techy shit.

sucks that this stuff is 'agreed' upon with enrollment to their services.
13435344, no. disabled.

13435346, were you alerted or did you already know about it?
Posted by legsdiamond, Wed Jun-16-21 11:33 AM
13435352, right…as soon as I saw that alert…
Posted by Dstl1, Wed Jun-16-21 12:00 PM
I went straight to…how to opt the fuck out. All we even have is an Echo Dot, in the living room where no one really hangs out. It was cool, at first…my kids making Alexa tell jokes or make fart noises. But, we really don’t even use it. It tells us when we have Amazon packages coming, but, we already know that.
13435356, opted out of that shit a few weeks ago at the advice of tech blogs
Posted by FLUIDJ, Wed Jun-16-21 01:22 PM
i follow.
13435386, I doubt opting out even removes the sharing...

...best thing to do is to destroy that amazon device

13435390, correct

having a Ring or Echo in the first place is giving Amazon the keys to your household
13435407, Pssht…95% of our shopping is Amazon anyway…they know me
Posted by FLUIDJ, Thu Jun-17-21 07:07 AM
Better than I know myself lol..

The only thing we don’t buy at Amazon is gas, toilet paper, paper towels, Tide and clothing (mostly)
13435411, damn.. that is too much
Posted by legsdiamond, Thu Jun-17-21 07:19 AM
nit sure why but I just feel like I need to diversify my shopping.. lol

I use Amazon but its mostly one time purchases or gifts for family. Being able to ship directly to fam is lovely.

13435427, Man, anything to save time and energy….and money….

Groceries get here in less time than it takes us to compile a list, mask up, go to the grocery store, deal with parking & crowds, and inevitably stuff we need being out of stock….

If Amazon could deliver gas, I’d probably sign right up! Lol…..

I will occasionally buy directly from a vendor if the price is equivalent and ships for free and I don’t need it immediately…..but shit…right now… I needed new filters for the refrigerator so against my better judgment I went to Whirlpool’s website and purchased them from there instead of Amazon….saved me like $8…. But that was damn near a week and half ago and they STILL haven’t shipped! Meanwhile….my fridge water dispenser is on drip mode because the filter is “expired” and I probably coulda had them shits from Amazon by the end of the day last week….

smart speakers and rings are next level imo.

13435426, People underestimate how much personal info they freely give away
Posted by FLUIDJ, Thu Jun-17-21 08:36 AM
Just browsing the internet on their phones and computers and tablets etc…
I mean…
I just think smart speakers and the like are waaay LESS of a privacy issue….

Alexa & Google Home are recording a bunch of screaming and fussing at my kids and banter about what’s for dinner or what we need to order in this weeks groceries lol…

13435429, I kind of agree
Posted by legsdiamond, Thu Jun-17-21 09:02 AM
when people say things like “I wont let the grocery store track my purchases with a discount card”

I laugh..

but I also feel like keeping my tracking devices at a minimum because we know what our phones are doing isn’t a bad thing.

all that said, this activation of wifi sharing is scary. They shouldn’t be able to just turn shit on and force us to opt out. Let us opt in.

and what happens when there is an update? Does it reset everything? Are they really letting users opt out?

13435432, I MIGHT agree to opt-in if there were compensation....
Posted by FLUIDJ, Thu Jun-17-21 09:16 AM
I'm against on on principle more so than privacy concerns.
I have firewall and robust network protections in place....
But the fact that I PAID for a device and now Amazon wants to USE a device I paid for for THEIR own gain???? Nah B....pay me.
13435434, its stealing IMO. You didnt buy a device to share with the block
Posted by legsdiamond, Thu Jun-17-21 09:40 AM
shit is crazy.
