13434067, Food you have to get every time you go home/to your hometown
Posted by blkprinceMD05, Sun May-30-21 07:00 PM
If im ever in the dc area for more than a weekend I have to get me some Ledo’s pizza (pepperoni, hamburger and green peppers) and a five piece wings with fried rice and mambo sauce. HAVE TO. Period.

Home is also the only place in the US, shit the world, where I feel comfortable ordering crab cakes, especially if I get out Annapolis or up to Bmore. I do not! I mean not order crab cakes outside of dc or Maryland or northern VA. Been burned too many times in my teens and 20s to know that only here will I get some meaty and real crab cakes.

Likewise, as a long term atlanta resident, I don’t trust lemon pepper wings outside of georgia, Alabama or north Florida. Period.

What about you?

She also used to like Big T's - we lived closed to them when I was growing up - but the service there has been awful the past 5 years. There are plenty of other good places though.

Ledo's is just Ledo's. that flaky dough and super sweet tomato sauce is all Maryland.

For Michigan, it would probably be fresh apple cider from the farmers market in the fall.

13434146, When I go to SF - Burritos
Posted by double negative, Tue Jun-01-21 11:10 AM
I can't fucking stand burritos from anywhere else. I went from having one at least every 3 days to having maybe 5 over the past 5 years I've been in NYC.

NYC just fucks them up royally - or, they get 90% right but that last 10% is some dumb shit that fucks me up, like,

"al pastor uses pineapple right? Ok, so boom, we figured ya'll liked the sweet with the smoky spicy so we marinated the pork in marshmallows. You're welcome"

13434529, SF fuck burritos up with rice
Posted by RobOne4, Fri Jun-04-21 06:31 PM
that shit is filler and doesnt belong in a burrito. I will die on this mountain.
13434589, lemme guess...you think San Diego makes the best burritos
Posted by double negative, Mon Jun-07-21 09:41 AM
ORRRR Los Angeles.

I've heard this argument before. I'm ok with the rice, but I'm just ok with really any west coast burrito made by people who represent the culture.

13434531, Funny @ eating 5 burritos in 5 years. Sounds crucial.
Posted by normal35762, Fri Jun-04-21 07:22 PM
Yeah when I go back to Cali I get a Cali burrito off gp.

I remember back in the days in Southern Town X some good patnas from Cali would hella flash "Mexican" food there. They weren't feeling it. I couldn't understand it. Then one day it hit me. I was eating a burrito at one restaurant and it tasted like ingredients from Kroger. Then I started thinking about how the options were limited and they didn't have the big burritos like we had in Cali.
13434592, its the same thing with pizza and New Yorkers
Posted by double negative, Mon Jun-07-21 09:59 AM
or bagels.

I didnt get it until I had several slices from several places. now I get it, it's not about one place that does pizza right - its about the common qualities.

like...if the crust doesnt crack when you fold a slice, the experience is at most is going to be 7 out of 10 instead of 10 out of 10.

burritos are the same. it's about how the base ingredients are handled AND it's about the way the condiments are done. the meat should be crispy and carmelized at the edges, yet soft and smooth in the middle. The rice should be sticky and kind of oily. The tortilla should be soft but also crisped on a warmer...nothing is worse than a dough-y burrito.

You need to fuck with some better spots

Bushwick, Sunset Park, shit even Clinton Hill / Fort Greene
13434712, NOPE. get away from me devil.
Posted by double negative, Tue Jun-08-21 06:04 AM
lol

all NYC burrito conversations start like this

"BRO! You're going to the wrong spots, you gotta go to ____, _____, ____"

Then I go to those places and end up wearing the Debbie Downer face for the rest of the evening. like: http://gph.is/2efnH3H

Hey, baby listen, it's not you, it's me. I just need some time to figure myself out you know? First we fell in love hard but then I realized that I like my food a certain way and...yes, I know you can do italian really well, and no one tops your mofongo, but I got certain needs baby and they just aint being met. I need to do me"

I have taken the LA homies (one from Highland Park, one from Eagle Rock, plus others) to my old spot Chinantla on Myrtle and they gave the thumbs all the way up on that spot.

I don't know how you get more official than that spot. My coworker's dad came from Puebla with the first wave of Mexican migrants to NYC from there, and lives around the corner. All the community around there is straight outta Puebla.

On some passable shit, I really f*ck with Maya Taqueria's burritos pretty regularly.
https://www.mayataqueria.com/location/

Have you been to the spot opened by the LA dude in the Village? Sounds fake but it's official. Taqueria St. Marks. Very true to LA in every manner.

Bushwick there were some great spots like Taqueria Cocoyoc. The taco truck on Bedford in wburg was surprisingly good.

To be honest if you are partial to burritos NYC is at a huge disadvantage because it's an americanized dish to be begin with and the NY population has no connection to the tradition I feel. Tacos are much more official in NYC.

13435249, some people just aren’t impressed by food recommendations
Posted by legsdiamond, Tue Jun-15-21 07:57 AM
not dog in this fight…

but sometimes people really up their expectations to MC Hammer levels (cant touch this) when someone gives a suggestion
13435250, In this case, he got a point about the burritos
Posted by T Reynolds, Tue Jun-15-21 08:21 AM
but yeah I got a friend that tells and re-tells a story about how our other friend from Houston tried to bring him and another guy from LA for some 'official Mexican' in Brooklyn, and they just look at each other and laugh when she says 'it's good right???'

It's like a badge of honor for some people yeah
13435280, I'm 100% down for Cali Burrito/Taco snobbery.
Posted by GOMEZ, Tue Jun-15-21 06:56 PM
I've had good burritos elsewhere, but I've been burned many times. So it's possible to find a good burrito, but it's like 1 in 10 chance of getting a good burrito at best. It's easier to find a good burrito outside of cali than it is to find a good bagel outside of NY for some reason, though.

I live in the Central Coast area, so I'm neutral in the SF vs. SoCal burrito war - I like them both.
13435299, Funny enough I've had really good bagels in LA

Cafe cubano I wouldn't trust it anywhere outside of FL. Technique arguably makes a bigger difference vs. ingredients (need to get that whip action right on the sugar).

Key Lime Pie -- have been burned before even from restaurants with assurances that it is 'authentic'. There's a very specific taste to key lime juice that is different than other lime juice.

I've never even seen Stone Crab on a menu outside of Florida.
