13432220, That Damn Michael Che
Posted by legsdiamond, Fri May-07-21 10:52 AM
I watched the first episode called Policin’ but I turned it off.

just felt like dude is working with white writers and had him clown BLM for a half hour.

Maybe I was in my feels but it just felt a bit... off.

I’ll try another episode to se if the vibe is better.

13432221, and used SNL Cecily Strong a lot..they write it together?
Posted by rdhull, Fri May-07-21 11:16 AM
13432222, I liked it. I am sure he will piss some folks off.
Posted by Buddy_Gilapagos, Fri May-07-21 11:21 AM
I think his POV wedges between black people and liberal progressive whites in a way that's interesting.

I just saw the first episode and want to watch more to see if he can walk that line.

It was very much like Sam Jay's comedy special album and she walks that line too, wasn't surprised to see was a writer on the show.

13432228, I liked it

Michael Che has racial inequality burnout, along with that other poster. It just that he ain't as melodramatic as that post. Now it's just black cynicism.

the BLM fitbit sketch is how I felt when people was selling shirts with the Brianna Taylor phrase on it.

I laughed at that one and the brother as the police officer bit.
13432229, the whole episode in totality shows nuance
Posted by tomjohn29, Fri May-07-21 12:33 PM
if you cut off early...you kind of miss it
13432254, yeeeeeah, it's on the edge of being "too smart"
Posted by double negative, Fri May-07-21 09:45 PM
13432266, I def thought the 1st ep was more smart than funny
Posted by Mafamaticks, Sat May-08-21 12:24 PM
That goes out the window by the 2nd ep. I’m 4 in and this shit is hilarious to me.
13432379, By episode 2 I was thinking the show should just lose the sketches
Posted by Buddy_Gilapagos, Tue May-11-21 12:21 PM
It could have sketch like scenes, but this show could very well just be straight narrative with absurd moments like Atlanta and Louie.

The sketches are a bit of a crutch

i'm on the third one it's got that first season feel where it's not really polished yet, not everything hits, but i've had some good laughs
13432305, He wasn't even clowning BLM
Posted by Hitokiri, Mon May-10-21 07:57 AM
He was clowning white liberals.
I dug that first episode.
But his take on police seems to be pretty weak and individualized.
Didn't like the second episode so much.
I'm in for the season
13432363, other episodes had me laughing out loud
Posted by legsdiamond, Tue May-11-21 08:26 AM
but the first ep was meh

13432372, The Prostate exam sketch was funny AF and problematic.
Posted by Buddy_Gilapagos, Tue May-11-21 10:59 AM
Like you want brothers to get prostate exams from a public health perspective so a sketch where they were making fun of a dude for getting one is problematic...but Meth as a doctor clowning dude was just damn funny.

13432373, you nasty.. put my finger where?
Posted by legsdiamond, Tue May-11-21 11:29 AM
13432391, you really thought it was problematic?
Posted by double negative, Tue May-11-21 02:45 PM
I can see that, in a way. I thought the sketch was not about what can happen, but an exploration in the anxiety men feel about being vulnerable in that situation. Kind of like, airing out the fears to make less of them...but then the act was never followed up to resolve the notion.

also, very very very weird to see meth so serious. I felt like i was looking at an alternate reality version of Clifford Smith Jr.
13432470, More like I can see someone saying it's problematic.
Posted by Buddy_Gilapagos, Wed May-12-21 09:54 AM
Same way his vaccine episode could be seen as problematic. That is, him saying out loud on a big platform that he questions the vaccine and doesn't want to take it will get him in trouble with a certain set and not really towing the party line.

The thing is, Che sounds more in sync with regular black people not on twitter than a lot of black twitter.

I mean, look at these people who can not believe that he is not familiar with the term AAVE?

13432515, I don't put a lot of stock into what Twitter niggas be saying honestly
Posted by Mafamaticks, Wed May-12-21 12:40 PM
It just be a bunch of niggas in their twitter bubble arguing in their echo chamber. Outside of that shit it's a lot of niggas that feel the same way
13432965, ^^^^^^This is the Michael Che appeal in a nutshell.
Posted by Buddy_Gilapagos, Mon May-17-21 10:24 AM
His comedy sounds more like barbershop conversations than most cats doing comedy on tv.

13434778, honestly, this took me back to watching Chappelle Show in the basement
Posted by Nodima, Tue Jun-08-21 02:33 PM
I was skeptical of the show (not sure why, I liked his stand-up special and Weekend Update is usually the highlight of SNL every week) until a friend insisted I watch it, even offered to put up for the six-pack AND the blunt if I just gave it a chance...

We watched that shit front to back, then did it AGAIN the next weekend. Most comedy shows these days just have me smirking and appreciating the wit and weirdness (I tried to shift him over to I Think You Should Leave which got dismissed almost immediately as "your dumb white boy shit") but this show had us legit screaming for three straight hours even when we knew what the jokes were.
