13431552, This Jeopardy Controversy is just downright embarrassing.
Posted by Buddy_Gilapagos, Sat May-01-21 11:09 AM
So yall seen this winner on Jeopardy was accused of throwing a white supremacy ok gesture when he won the other night.

https://thehill.com/changing-america/enrichment/arts-culture/550895-jeopardy-erupts-in-controversy-after-winner

We have seen this before and have always felt that it was Alt-right's biggest success in owning the libs to have us seeking out secret code in a gesture that Ball Players, Nupes and generally everybody who has done an OK sign at one time or another in their life.

So he eventually came out and disavowed White Supremacy.

https://ew.com/tv/jeopardy-kelly-donohue-condemns-white-supremacy-hand-gesture-controversy/

But the only thing that was accomplished was giving something for Fox News & the NY Post to talk about.

Gesture looks wild weird even given the context

Here’s the image:

Like nobody does three as a bolo tie. It’s almost always that circle with the index and thumb while the other three fingers curl towards your face
This man out here given himself carpal tunnel in the age of ironic nazis and for whatever reason y’all wanna argue for his benefit of the doubt.

It sure looks like he knows how to use his fingers correctly for 1 and 2 but suddenly three is wild alt righty.

13431607, I don’t even think it’s worth all that discussion
Posted by MEAT, Sun May-02-21 09:25 AM
Dude claimed that’s not what he was flagging and deleted the Facebook post
Only he knows his motivation, personally, I don’t trust him, but that’s a me issue.
But I think it’s fair to acknowledge that people were offended by the optics and wanted clarification. I don’t think that’s a bridge too far.
13431608, Ur not wrong. He could have used his first three fingers and didn’t
Posted by blkprinceMD05, Sun May-02-21 09:38 AM
Need to have it pressed up against his chest like that, like he did with 1 and 2. I think he knew exactly what the fuck he was doing. Racist ass
13431609, So does that work. His plan was to win the first two matches and
Posted by Buddy_Gilapagos, Sun May-02-21 09:47 AM
throw up the 1 and 2 so that when he wins for the 3rd time he can send a hidden racist symbol that, BTW, was in heavy use by everyone before the racist claimed it?

13431615, How does what work? White stupidity and opportunism?
Posted by MEAT, Sun May-02-21 10:12 AM
You’re doing all the leg work for that man. I’ve seen people work on getting more baseball strike outs just so they could do funny shit with three K’s and go unnoticed.

I’m sure his goal was to make money off trivia. Everything else is a bonus. I look forward to upping this post when he’s on Fox News or Twitter within a year crying about cancel culture during his book deal tour.
13431616, i wonder how some of these folks function lol
Posted by BrooklynWHAT, Sun May-02-21 10:40 AM
13431647, If he got to three, he wasn’t gonna let the opportunity pass.
Posted by blkprinceMD05, Sun May-02-21 05:53 PM
He got to three wins and didn’t. The ground work was laid for an “excuse” by doing the one finger, 1st win, two fingers, second win gestures.

We can’t say for sure either way but I think it’s naive extremely hopeful to say this wasn’t the racist gesture that some think it is just becuz he did the one and the two fingers....if the three fingers had been the index, middle and ring and not pressed up against his chest like that, I would say it wasn’t intentional either. But
That shit looks suspect
13431649, lol yeah, i mean its not impossible
Posted by Mynoriti, Sun May-02-21 06:04 PM
but the fact that nearly 500 former contestants signed on to this based on something that looks slightly odd, is hella extra. And counter productive for reasons you already mentioned.

i mean maybe we'll find out this guy is in fact a maga dirtbag, but as of now this shouldn't be any kind of story
13431650, The former contestant world is small enough
Posted by MEAT, Sun May-02-21 06:23 PM
That they likely travel on the same internet circles doing trivia shit
There’s probably a lot more about this man they know than we do.

13431654, do you want him to be a nazi?
Posted by Mynoriti, Sun May-02-21 07:07 PM
skimming that link you shared, it doesn't seem like anyone in it has any personal knowledge of him.
13431656, I don't think I could care less what he is
Posted by MEAT, Sun May-02-21 08:10 PM
Dude aint Ken Jennings and this will be the highest visibility thing he does in his life.

What I do find strange is the folks in here, on here that are acting like the whole purpose of dog whistle racial gestures is not to spark these kinds of reactions and I question why.

If there's anything I do care about is that white people should have to be just as cautious about their appearances as society forces Black people to be.
13431658, fair enough

I don't think anyone is really arguing that. more that there isn't any actual evidence that this *is* a dog whistle. and by feeding into it, it turns into a crying wolf situation when someone who intentionally flashes that sign gets lumped in.

Plus it's just a shitty thing to be accused of. Again it could turn out these accusations are warranted but at this point, i don't see him as any more a nazi than the contestants who signed that letter.

>If there's anything I do care about is that white people

fair point.

13431669, I figured it was a matter of time before something like this happened

During my game, I dropped a peace up, a town down during the intro:
https://twitter.com/jasonsdozier/status/1210213556152655872

While one of my opponents dropped one of these during his: https://i1.wp.com/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com/news/wp-content/uploads/2014/07/Nymeyer,_L._08_NCAA_1648.jpg

Jeopardy gives you a *lot* of rules about what you can and can not do during the game, so I've always thought this was a bit of a blind spot (which I absolutely took advantage of, clearly). But some of those rules are tied to concerns about the appearance of supporting white supremacy: you're not allowed to wager some obvious amounts like $69 or $666, but you're also not allowed to wager $14, $88, or $1488 because of they're all associated with the fourteen words slogan.

With *that* all said, Kelly's "I was just celebrating three wins defense" runs a bit flat considering this was his FB cover photo before he scrubbed it due to the controversy. https://pbs.twimg.com/media/E0LDygCXEAI_qx3?format=jpg&name=large

Do I think he's a white supremecist? Nah. Probably not. Do I think he's a troll that took advantage of his national platform and 5 seconds of fame? Absolutely. My gut feeling is that he thought he was being slick and didn't expect the massive blowback.

FWIW I was actually surprised to see how much the former Jeopardy contestant community rallied together around this. It's a surprisingly super progressive community that's centered around inclusiveness (this same group was one of the leads that pushed so hard for LeVar Burton to host, hopefully permanently), so this all definitely makes sense in that context.

At the end of the day, I'm sure this means the production team is going to crack down super hard on this going forward. So I guess I'm just glad I got a chance to put on for my city while I still had the opportunity.

Just my 2c

13431686, the invention of dual symbolism in our modern times is genus levels shit
Posted by double negative, Mon May-03-21 11:21 AM
i'm never not amazed at....whatever the fuck this is when I see it. It's happening here.

It's when a some everyday act/word/symbol/statement is used to point to something devious and dark, but then the person who used the thing has every opportunity to deny the darker statement and lean back on the primary definition/associations of the object.

Then because the object (word, statement, symbol) is so ubiquitous it becomes a battleground for discussion in the culture war debates.

then, during the whole time, the person who first originally used the thing is able to keep both feet on two different islands of meaning. and it's done by simultaneously denying a second meaning while also positioning the dark statement as just joking/humor.

"The greatest trick the Devil ever pulled was convincing the world he didn't exist" - the big trick in all of this, is that we're all trying to act as if these meanings and interactions are just one to one, IRL and completely ignoring the part of living in a world thats on the internet and that the meaning of things has splintered because the language of internet culture is appropriation - so things are appropriated to be given new meaning by groups.

Example:

https://youtu.be/vB-qWovaCLo

I genuinely like the beat for this because I'm hearing it from the hip hop, electronic music perspective.

Unfortunately, it's a nazi dogwhistle. Don't believe it? Breakdown here: https://youtu.be/cscP830j2KA?t=455

https://forward.com/fast-forward/423812/white-nationalist-clowns-honk-honkler/

But, then, the meaning of clown world can also mean anything not going right in the world like, "the US and it's government have fucked up their Covid response...what a clown world"

13431841, I’m shocked people in here don’t believe these folk are above trolling
