but I wonder if the grown man raps is just not the vibe for white dudes.

I mean, the track is a bit sleepy but these are old heads. Not some tear the club up shit. As an old back packer who “made it” to adulthood and 401K’s and investments and shit..

“I dig man.. I dig” - Varnell Hill

i LOVED Kings Disease. Jay smoked his track w/ Nip on Judas & The Black Messiah.

These dudes just continue to dilute their legacy with “trying to hard” lyricism.

I give them props for their business acumen, because both have made some
great investments to grow their wealth.

But musically?

I’ve never been a Jay fan, but at least the beats were hitting. And Nas just sounds
and facially looks bloated.

They are like champions who are not hungry anymore because
they’ve gotten fat. Hip hop is about keeping shit simple and kicking
fresh rhymes. This is why Kool Keith is still relevant, even though he has
been in the game for over 35 years!

Just rhyme... no one cares about your taste in art or crypto investment.

13431458, sit this one out champ.

Two more rounds of this and it would have been set and I would have pointed out that he's clearly not that much of a Kool Keith fan, and is just on some dated backpacker nerd shit.

It was to be a thing of petty message board beauty.

Kes onut you can never tell with him. He is known for that.

Known for what? Telling people they live in mom's basement? I don't think so.

Telling you that you have really stupid takes on things?
Because I'm nowhere close to being alone in that.

Pointing out that you have a tendency toward supporting white power structures? I'll Be Dat (c)

Known for... Mildly trolling you for a minute with "shut up"?

Known for...defending you when people say you're the reason this site is dead? Because I was definitely in a very small group for that

>If it were anyone else, it would have been different.

Please. If the roles were reversed, I'd have openly taken the L.

And had you caught on and done the same... What, exactly, do you think my response would have been?

Because it was very clearly a joke that I assumed that you'd have caught. Since you didn't, I did another.

You're being melodramatic.

And it's fucking hilarious coming from Mr. YOU DON'T KNOW REAL HIP HOP gatekeeper

Jay

13431495, Benny’s cool. He isn’t my favorite in Griselda though.
Posted by allStah, Fri Apr-30-21 04:17 PM
That would be Conway. His latest shit I have on repeat and is the best album
of 2021 TO ME.

That shit is sickness. Like it’s real real hip hop. And it got beats!

Too many cats rhyming over shit with no beats ...I think that style has run
it’s course. Conway bringing boom bap back.

Big Ghost is killing the game right now....probably the best beat maker at this point.
That’s what I’ve been listening to the most.. almost all his projects. Beats are insane.
UFO FEV FT? Shittttt.
Not feeling Skyzoo. Don’t like his flow or sound. It’s not wack. Just doesn’t hit me.

I’m not up on EVERYTHING. But shit that I like I check for. I’m the type to listen to
the same album over and over like back in the day. So like I said ,I got Conway on
repeat until I’m ready to move on to something else.

Marciano was influenced by Kool Keith

Kool Keith has multiple personifications in hip hop that were GROUNDBREAKING
He created a whole different genre of hip hop.

Naw, I’m for the guy who helped create the conscience/scientific era. I’m for the
guy who started rhyming when NAS was in grade school popping jacks.
He is the creator of the offbeat rhyme flow.

I’m for the guy who has been rhyming for over 35 years and still has bars
and making quality material.

Im for the guy who created multiple styles and genres that many rappers
bit from.

13431520, dawg...
Posted by PROMO, Fri Apr-30-21 09:25 PM
it's fine if you like Kool Keith.

what's striking a nerve is saying he's "still relevant."

him doing a verse on Roc Marciano's album isn't "relevance."

13431521, He is still lyrically relevant.
Posted by allStah, Fri Apr-30-21 09:38 PM
He just recently made a record with Roc Marciano.

No Diss, just because you’re not up ,it’s cool.

And what I mean by lyrically relevant, is he is still out here
making records and rhyming with current MCs, and still
sounding fresh.

I posted the “Broadway Billy” joint that he did. Check it out.

ALso, he just dropped a single, and his new album “Keith’s Salon”
is dropping in the summer.

https://urbanbridgez.com/2021/04/26/kool-keith-drops-new-single-extravagance-keiths-salon-coming-in-june/

This guy has been rhyming since 1985, and is still dropping that ill offbeat flow!!
13431523, cool you just have a different definition of "relevant"....
Posted by PROMO, Fri Apr-30-21 10:08 PM
than EVERYONE else.

at that point there's no reason to even discuss it.
13431525, Even by his own definition Nas would be relevant

13431527, Dude just say you’re not up
Posted by allStah, Fri Apr-30-21 11:03 PM
It’s cool that you’re not aware.

Kool Keith has always been underground with a huge cult following,
which is still relevant today.

He was on SWAY last year freestyling with some shit he just wrote,
and look at the people who were following.

https://youtu.be/-4rrdW1BqCU

This dude is still doing tours, writing rhymes, and making records.
He was on one of the hottest underground albums last year, MT. Marci,
by one of the hottest MCs in the game right now.

Underground cats ain’t listening to Nas or Jay. They are listening to Roc, Griselda,
Stovegod, etc, and through them they are hearing Kool Keith. That’s staying relevant.

A whole new generation is hearing his rhymes and styles.

And you didn’t now that.

SMH.
13431534, clearly you don't know about me.

Posted by DJR, Sat May-01-21 07:48 AM
If we did a Griselda fans/Kool Keith fans Venn Diagram, there wouldn’t be a whole lot in the middle.
13431551, It’s about exposure.
Posted by allStah, Sat May-01-21 11:05 AM
And staying relevant through exposure. It’s not about who has more fans.

It’s about constantly reinventing yourself and staying on the scene.

Name me a MC who started rhyming in the early 80s ,who is not only still rhyming
,but is doing records with top MCs? And not only still rhyming but still
sounding fresh.

Name me?

Kool Keith is like 50+ years old still rhyming on relevant records

You better believe that are some young individuals being influenced
by his rhymes that we might hear about years later.

The argument isn’t about who has more fans...The argument is about
Kool Keith still being relevant....and he is very much so still keeping
himself relevant and still sounding FRESH.

13431556, exposure like being with Roc Nation like Benny and Westside Gunn?
Posted by DJR, Sat May-01-21 12:05 PM

13431562, Kool Keith had an ill year last year.

Keith at 50 years olds sounds fresher and doper....at 50, B

Posted by My_SP1200_Broken_Again, Tue May-04-21 09:46 AM

13431555, Some people like watching Documentries, some people
Posted by Adwhizz, Sat May-01-21 12:01 PM
like Sci-Fi/Horror movies

I listen to Keith's music WAY more than I do Nas, and think overall he's more entertaining. He's a Cult favorite

Yeah Nas is way more well known, has more mainstream hits and probably has less weak material in his catalog

Quality control is NOT Keith's strong point, he put out a lot of shit that probably should have stayed on his hard drive

But he's still had a staggering amount of moments of excellence across almost 5 decades now

13431568, That’s cool
Posted by Anonymous, Sat May-01-21 01:56 PM
I’m debating people don’t like that weird shit.

I’m just generally amazed at people who like weird shit being surprised other people think it’s weird shit.

Honestly, why even bring Kool Keith into a discussion about Nas in 2021?

This shit ain’t that hard to figure out.

I will say I think this is the first of their collabs where I felt like Jay had the better verse. Nas murked him on the first two. And Jay wasn't weak on either of those songs either, for the record. It's just that Nas was (and usually is) on another level.

But I think Jay got this one.

One way or the other, this video is great. Two legends giving love. Gave me chills.

They are on a record with DJ Khalid that’s boring, with weak lyrical content,
and way over the top by constantly looking into the camera. They are trying
way too hard to stay lyrically relevant.

Clearly they are doing it for the money only at this stage.

He was on a lyrical tear on that album. "Nasty" is just insane.

"Past nasty, now I'm gross or repulsive
talk money, is you jokin'?
cash everywhere, in my bank, in the sofa
in the walls, in the cars, in my wallet, in my pocket, on the floors
ceilin', the safe, bitch, I got it

slow it down even more with lazy drums and a lazy bass line, AND the vibe of the beat doesn’t fit what the song is talking about at all?

If they are gonna spit about topics like this it needed to have a Watch the Throne type of triumphant stadium rap feel. This ain’t it...

So where’s your track homie?

Damn...I don’t even like this track like that but the critiques y’all are coming with are suspect as shit.

How you gonna tell these two legends and super successful MCs and businessmen what their vibe should be?

I keep hearing the word lazy thrown around here like a single one of y’all could produce something better.

Not to mention, if I had a billi, I’d be on some super chill lounge mode all fucking day which I’m sure you’d be calling “lazy”.
13431580, That beat is absolutely lazy. But my issue isn’t with the beat or the

performance, it’s that they don’t match each other.

As for the rest of what you said - this is OKP. We posting opinions. If you like the song, that’s great. I actually like the bars Nas and Jay spit here, but I don’t think this beat is the right fit for it.
13431611, We got to be producers to say that beat is trash? LOL.

The time I would guess would be the opposite of lazy.
13431670, Nah, that shit is beyond lazy.. it's dull, boring & generic sounding..
Posted by My_SP1200_Broken_Again, Mon May-03-21 08:41 AM
..compare it to the upper 50% of Nas & Jay's music ..it's instantly forgettable besides the fact that they rarely collaborate. ...remember these guys (not Khalid) have made GREAT songs ..this one however is toilet bowl status ...and its not just the beat, they both sound bored as fuck to be there

13431714, I’m not arguing it’s a good song
Posted by Anonymous, Mon May-03-21 02:15 PM
I’m just telling people with zero musical talent, lazy is not a word they should be using to define something they couldn’t do themselves.

Generic...cool

Boring...cool

Uninspired...cool

But believe someone put time and effort into producing and mixing that.

Maybe you don’t like it...that’s cool.

I don’t like Drake and think his shit sucks and lyrics are fucking wack...but I wouldn’t call him lazy at all.
13431717, I'm a musician myself. Doesn't matter in terms of comments on a

release, but get out of here with "zero musical talent". My degree is in music (jazz studies, performance and improvisation). I've done sound engineering, production, taught lessons, and I play several instruments myself. Up until the pandemic I was doing 100-150 gigs a year.

Again - none of that matters, because this is a freaking message board. We're posting opinions here.

In my opinion, the drums and the bass line on this is lazy. Why? Because if you're going to redo a sample, ESPECIALLY redoing a sample for a song featuring the original artist, then you need to do something different with it to justify why it's being reused. The only thing different on this is that the sample is looped even slower than the original, already laid back song. That contributes to the sleepy, lazy vibe it has. Go listen to the instrumental of Song Cry and then listen to this back to back. Listen to the difference in how the drums hit. These drums sound like defaults from a drum sample pack that haven't been iso'd, separately EQ'd, etc. On the original Just Blaze layered the clap and snare hits separately, and you can hear throughout the song when he takes one of the other away. Adds depth and character to the track. I could go on and on but it's a waste of time.
13431741, *claps*
Posted by Anonymous, Mon May-03-21 05:23 PM
There you go...much better than saying “lazy”

And as I said, I don’t even like the song so I’m trying to defend it.

But this thread is a bit out of control.

And I still disagree with you or anyone trying to tell them what the vibe of the song should be.

13431799, what are you clapping at?? They said lazy too, lol...
Posted by My_SP1200_Broken_Again, Tue May-04-21 09:40 AM

There's a lot of shit I feel is lazy, and sometimes that's a valid critique.

I do think that people take for granted the effectiveness of simplicity in hip hop, because so much great material exists on the strength of two bar loops. I like some beats where it sounds like they're going all out,

Moreover, what may come across as lazy can be anything but.

I remember people raking Just Blaze over the coals for supposedly doing a straight loop for Song Cry. But come to find out, he used like 60 chops on that beat to get it to sound that way.

But even if what he did was take a loop and lace some drums on top, so be it, because the end result was a thing of beauty. I see a bit too much emphasis placed on how much a producer does or doesn't do sometimes.

Yeah, we can give points for all kinds of shit, deep cuts for sample sources (everyone wanted the source for Nas Is Like for fuckin ever), creative chops and whatnot, but at that proverbial end of the proverbial day... Was it dope?

And, from a producer's standpoint, I have some issues with this.

Particularly the bass, both the line and the sound of it clashes to me. The sample itself is so lush that it warrants more dynamic percussion choices, maybe a reverb-drenched clap on every 8th snare or whatever. In my mind, this is less than what it could have been, production wise- but that's not my "fan" brain talking. That's my producer brain talking.

It's nitpicking, just me daydreaming about what I would do with it, even as I'm sitting on god knows how many unfinished/unpolished beats that could be but won't until/unless I decide I'm all the way in on it.

And either way, the next person likely won't have any issue whatsoever with those elements of the beat. Clearly two of the GOATS didn't have an issue with those element, so who the fuck am I? The meat of the beat still goes for me.

But still, we all hear what we hear, in the way that we hear it. I don't necessarily begrudge someone who sees it as lazy if that's their honest take, but I don't think that take washes out.
13431549, TLDR of this sing: "Join us, there should be more of us"
Posted by Cold Truth, Sat May-01-21 10:47 AM
Iidly just doing this for the check.at's what this song is about.
That's the entire point of it.

"I’m from the ghetto, what location? Two seconds from the Devil"

On down to Jay:

"Overlookin' the City of Angels, the angel invested in things
Unprecedented run
Everybody's gettin' bands, we just dance to different drums
I like who I've become"

This isn't about flossing
They're not showing off here

The real sins here are that the hook sucks- it's lazy and generic despite being the central theme of the song. and the bass is too loud in the mix.

Someone above said they're clearly just doing this for the check, which us nuts. They get that check because they do this.

And if your know *anything* about them- or, just listening to this song- it's clear that they don't exactly need whateve bag they'll get from this. This isn't Nicholas Cage (and De Niro, it seems) saying yes to everything because they'll go broke if they don't.

Lyrically they ramble a bit. Ok. I hate the hook.
But as far as a "sleepy beat", lmao. That's a soulful track, not a "sleepy" one. And it's solid, if unspectacular. But sleepy? Kick rocks.

IMO there's far too much shitting on this for the sake of doing it.

A lot of people have moved kn to other rappers with other sounds. Their style isn't current.
Etc.

But I think the criticism in here is far too heavy relative to the quality of the content, and I think the point of this song has been skewed toward something arrogant or braggadocius. It isn't.

the instrumental is too reminiscent of "song cry" for my taste. sounds like a tory lanez version of a song that sounds like "song cry" if that makes sense to anyone. nas' flow is all over the place. he just doesn't know what to do over these "slower" modern beats. calling yourself the scarface of crypto is corny. forgettable verse from jay. i agree with tiger wood's assessment that this is supposed to be a giant event but is more underwhelming than anything

the most frustrating thing about khaled is that he is forever teetering on self-parody but never quite tips over because he is this weird combination of earnest and self-aware. this means i can't enjoy his music ironcially, which is what i truly want out of khaled's music at this point in his career
