This is so fucking sad. Let’s hope they are as wrong as they were about Wayne.

It would be very sad to see him go, because he meant a lot to hip hop in the late 90's.
13429111, Apparently he’s now breathing on his own
Posted by makaveli, Sat Apr-03-21 05:35 PM
Don’t think he’s out of the woods yet.
13429113, Never mind still on life support

was the first time I'd heard him and I too was in awe.

Video was hype as hell. Used to love catching it on Rap City.

Posted by topaz, Sun Apr-11-21 05:55 AM
He's got that memorable voice on the hook of Take What's Yours, then obviously killed it on 24 Hrs To Live. Didn't know there was a video for it until now!

Hope Black Rob gets better soon, sad to see him like that in the hospital.
13429135, Backstage is a Jay-Z showcase, but DMX’s freestyle remains its peak

RIP. Sad that he struggled with addiction his whole life, but also pretty impressive what he achieved in spite of it. Glad he got some recent recognition with the verzuz thing.
13429605, Man was my all time favorite rapper. I hope he found peace

Posted by Tiger Woods, Fri Apr-09-21 12:33 PM

the "RR" insignia, the voice, the growling, the prayer skits...it was so fresh, weird, organic, and welcome.

My first "favorite rapper", before Hov or Eminem. Cut grass for weeks to buy "And Then There Was X"

Man what a drag
13429628, Rest, X

That verzuz was one for the highlights of the past year for me, I really enjoyed it. This sucks.
13429630, Earl Simmons, you finally free

13429631, Very few were as transcendent live as he was.
Posted by Ryan M, Fri Apr-09-21 01:30 PM
Especially in the era of most live hip hop being pretty lackluster.

A true original. His run was unparalleled. Legend.
13429634, gone but never forgotten
Posted by Binlahab, Fri Apr-09-21 01:50 PM
I went to prairie view A&M in 1999.

people werent listening to dmx in bumfuck waller county texas at that time, i mean he was somewhat known but that was some east coast shit and the east coast/west coast thing...was kinda real.

but i did.

that flesh of my flesh blood of my blood LP got HELLA burn in my dorm room and at first my roomie and others in the dorm was like man turn that bullshit OFF and crank this BG or whatever

the PV football team was like...0 for the 90s. look it up. they lost EVERY damn game...for a decade. I dunno why they even had a damn football team for real.

PV was in the middle of nowhere...and kids would bounce every wknd back to dallas or houston if they could because wasnt shit popping on campus on the wknd (hanging out in the walmart parking lot was a major deal then)

well the team broke that streak and won in Fall 99. I was a communication student, and would just kick it at the on campus radio station (shout out KPVU 91.3) which broadcast the games too (who tf listened? nobody)

well, as it became apparent they might win...all you could see was a line of headlights...motherfuckers was driving back and it was a one lane road into the campus...all you saw was headlights for miles coming in.

when they won...that whole campus went tf AWF. remains one of the best parties I have ever been at. they ripped up the goalposts and carried them shits around the yard and dumped up on the university president front yard (LOL)

my roomie was on the football team and when they came back the next day...dude came in and was like TURN THAT DMX UP

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Tef0jj-VEDw

and the party cranked right back up.

good ass times. RIP
13429650, 1. That’s a great fucking story
Posted by calij81, Fri Apr-09-21 03:39 PM
2. I remember how bad those teams were and that losing streak and then when they finally broke it and CFB Live covered that win.
13429692, good lord, did pv suck
Posted by tex, Fri Apr-09-21 10:07 PM

kinda fitting that dmx was a temporary respite from y’alls

One of my favorite rappers of all time and certainly one of the best of his generation.

His intensity and lyrics were beyond powerful and his soul and power will be missed.
13429645, Another legend gone way too soon. RIP to the dog.

13429646, Mods, can we edit the title to an RIP thread?
Posted by Cold Truth, Fri Apr-09-21 03:14 PM
Nothing against Ryan, but wack ass TMZ can kick rocks as part of this.
13429649, That Ruff Ryders BET joint came out at just theght time
Posted by Cold Truth, Fri Apr-09-21 03:29 PM
Someone earlier in the thread called him a force of nature.

That's such an apt description of him.

One of.the most powerful voices in hip hop, literally and figuratively. One of the most immediately relatable rappers I can think of. Because we did look through his eyes, and saw what he saw.

Walk through my shoes, and hurt your feet?

Everyone can feel that.

If you had a hard life, if you were alone, you struggled within yourself, etc, and had It's Dark And Hell Is Hot in the Walkman?

That shit was a warm blanket. It was home. It was a dark and dank and gutter and grimey and straight up fucking human.

Feel the pain, feel the joy, of a man who was never a boy.

He crossed over. He hit the mainstream. But he spoke directly to certain people on this world. The very best MC's in hip hop, at least those I gravitate to, have a knack for wearing their heart on their sleeve and letting you into their world in an intimate way.

All at once, listening to X feels like dawning a cape and a suit of armor, because you're fighting your own demons right alongside him.

I'm glad he doesn't have to fight anymore.
13429651, Rest in peace. :(

Posted by Dj Joey Joe, Sat Apr-10-21 12:20 AM
I was really hoping he would pull through and start breathing on his own again and get well and back on his feet, but I guess that wasn't in God's plan; the world lost another great emcee, damn.

13429707, He was going to fight George Zimmerman at one point
Posted by makaveli, Sat Apr-10-21 07:49 AM

Saw him for free at Yardfest at Howard. He ripped it. I was totally unfamiliar with his catalog but liked his show a lot. Also loved that video where he sings Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer. And the other classic rollercoaster video. Seemed like a good dude. RIP

Peace,
