Further, when you call it a "grift" what you're really doing is releasing people from their own personal responsibility. If you sent money to a mufucka because he looked and sounded good and said something you liked, that's on you. Now if he told you he was gonna invest your money and pay you dividends, now we talk about grifting, but until then, you bought what you paid for, a good feeling.

He was taking people's money on the false promise that he can "stop the steal". He was lying to them and conning them out of their money.

These people aren't giving money because he looks/sounds good. They want the service he promises.

but I don't know how what he did was different that raising money for any other political cause (it just happened to be a extreme fringe position). He said he was gonna put pressure on congress, and they followed through on that. In fact, his shit was the opposite of a grift lol. It just wasn't ultimately successful, but ending abortion hasn't been ultimately successful either and nobody would call pro-life campaigns a "grift".
