13427629, OKP golden era playlist (washed & proud edition)
Posted by Bambino Grande, Wed Mar-17-21 12:21 PM

Listen, this might sound corny AF but I've been on a Like Water For Chocolate binge lately, got both the album and the instrumental album on repeat, and though Soulquarians projects were collaborative efforts from several drum gods (you know who), LWFC might have some of my fav ?uest drums (sounds + grooves) to date

This inspired me to hop on over to the OKP store and cop some Soulquarians merch (wish they had some Ummah tees over there too lol)

I'm thinking damn there was ALOT of good music flowing through these boards back when, and I'd love to make a playlist (for my own listening pleasure) of the defining jams from the early OKP days

Obviously we'll have VASTLY different opinions on what the jams were, but I know we'll all agree on some music and I'm on a memory lane type vibe with the selection these days.. so yeah I'm inspired lol. And its spring time!

I'm looking for some Ummah stuff, Soulquarians... What was your favorite song from Love 4 Sale... What were your Sa-Ra jams? Lets not forget J Davey.... Etc etc. I might even f around and throw some Pharrell & The Yessirs on there

13427641, Sa Ra laced “Hollywood”
Posted by allStah, Wed Mar-17-21 01:31 PM
Bilal’s version is good, but Sa Ra’s is more raw/sensual at the same time.

I actually feel Sa Ra was slightly overrated as a whole. Some songs go, but
others are just soul fusion.

Make sure you put some Jdavey in there. A lot of people stole their sound.

lol @ WASHED.
13427643, J Davey: «Dirty Love» or «No More»?
Posted by Bambino Grande, Wed Mar-17-21 01:35 PM

At least those were *my* jams lol

Agree 100% on SCP. They had a few bops but it was style over content. Om'Mas Keith is forever the man tho
13427715, Wow, just took me back.. can't remember my last Sa-Ra listen. 'And If'>>
Posted by kfine, Wed Mar-17-21 07:55 PM
I used to get lost in that track lol

Def my initial fave off that album, but I liked it as a whole.

Sa-Ra was also my gateway to checking specifically for Shafiq, Om'mas, Thundercat, etc all that Cali stuff

Can't think of my fave J Davey tbh... I'm glad I caught them and Blu live in DC pre-hiatus tho
13427718, «And If» was a bop! «Everybody» with Andre3000 and Ye too
Posted by Bambino Grande, Wed Mar-17-21 08:18 PM
13427719, Thank you for making this post. Bc I just listened to UN Plan by Shafiq
Posted by kfine, Wed Mar-17-21 08:42 PM

for the first time in a lonnng while

The level of joy I derive from that song!

So perfect and positive and timeless lol
13427726, Threw that on now too lol
Posted by Bambino Grande, Thu Mar-18-21 04:05 AM

Yeah so much good music related to the early boards, hopefully we could get a few titles poppin in this springtime positivity post !

13427717, GB & Spacek «Simply So» was a jam lol

13427728, Great post idea...

Gotta include one or two joints from each of the classic Soulquarian albums...everyone’s pick would be different but here’s mine:

Act Too (Things Fall Apart)
Spanish Joint (Voodoo)
Penitentiary Philosophy (Mama’s Gun)
Nag Champa (LWFC)
Sometimes (1st Born Second)

Then some others that I’d add...

Fall in Love (Fantastic Vol 2)
The Way (Who is Jill Scott)
Speed (The Listening)
I’ll Stay (RH Factor by Roy Hargrove - essentially another Soulquarian album)

I’m sure I’m missing a ton...

13427759, I get goosebumps just reading that SV title
Posted by Bambino Grande, Thu Mar-18-21 10:07 AM

The best Dilla beats on Fantastic Vol. 2 are some of the greatest Dilla beats, period.

Great list! I’m adding the ones I find on Spotify

13427922, Definitely, though “Light It Up” by LB would count too
Posted by DJR, Fri Mar-19-21 12:53 PM
since I believe that was the first time they worked together.

How about some Tanya Morgan too?
13427934, Hell yea. Nic's Groove, Let's Move, and/or The Answer IMO

13427947, I had to come back to this. Hope you don't mind if I bam up your post
Posted by kfine, Fri Mar-19-21 03:31 PM
a lil bit lol

I haven't read the last few replies to make sure I'm not repeating suggestions, but I took time to think of all my old faves.

I think I might also be slightly younger than the avg charter member okp, so I don't even know what years make up the okp golden era boundaries lol. I'm guessing I was pretty late to the party, but I was a non-registered lurker for years too before finally setting up an account.

Other interesting thing is I actually came to okp for the laughs, not music... lol. I checked blogs for my playery music fix, but then I noticed a lot of them would mention okp or posted here and so I started hanging out here too lol

As far as the music, I was surprised how sentimental I am about a lot of these projects. All the DMV stuff, in particular, got me through a very hungry and tranformative phase of my life. I don't think Kev Brown's beats will ever age to me lol. After moving there tho (for school not the music lol), I was glad I got to see Oddisee live at least

I'll post each in a reply to this so it's easier for you to skim
