There's always been an OPTION to play your preferred music vs. listen to something that's being presented on the open airwaves....
I've seen some pretty intense blues 8-tracks in my grand daddy's collection back in the day....he kept them joints tucked away too....
Public/commercial radio, tv have generally always been understood as a "safer" space for media consumption. Like...of course you know it's not gonna be KIDS centric music playing on no radio stations...but you also had a certain degree of confidence that playing the radio stations was going to be the safest bet for listening to music with kids in the car.
