13423175, Daniel Kaluuya or Robert Downey Jr? That voice he used is terrible

When Judas and the Black Messiah trailer plays it looks great until you hear Daniel Kaluuya. Then I say maybe Fred Hampton sounded like that... goes to YouTube find a clip of Hampton speaking, he don’t sound like that at all. Bottomline it’s bad acting, and bad casting but in this pussy society where everyone gets a trophy you don’t get called out when you need improvement.
13423177, lmao

13423179, No opinion on Kaluuya really

But I will say that not all great actors are great mimics. I personally don't need a biopic performance to be a great imitation of the original person for it to be effective. There's a magic sometimes in the synthesis of the actor with the material.

However, all that being said, a guy who could have nailed Hampton's tones was Eddie Murphy. It's a shame he didn't make a great movie in that role in the 80's (of course the funding prospects for something so "transgressive" in those days was probably way more difficult).

Maybe it might still be possible through "the Irishman"-style de-aging??? LOL no god forbid...Fred Hampton with White Walker blue eyes isn't something the world is ready for.
13423193, Now that I’ve thought about it more

A “JFK”-era Oliver Stone Panther pic starring Murphy? I need the singularity so AI can recreate this.
13423188, Movie looks good trailer was great. But Daniel’s voice needed help

13423191, that dude is not a good actor to me
Posted by Ray_Snill, Sun Feb-07-21 05:41 PM
the only thing I liked him in was Black Panther but that mainly because it's a good movie. I liked pretty much everyone but him in Get Out

13423216, I think BP was one of his lesser performances lol

Not to say it was bad but I loved him in Widows (the movie wasn't great but he was) and his episode of Black Mirror

13423288, He’s good, not A list good. Queen and Slim was his best work imo

13423225, Post kind of took a left turn at the end lol

I don't necessarily care as much that he sounds like Fred as I care that his voice doesn't take me out of the movie. That's the value of the actor being a great mimic, I get to think about the character instead of the actor.
13423245, Lakeith should've played Fred Hampton nm

13423267, this post is funny in light of Jemele Hill's podcast from today.
Posted by PROMO, Mon Feb-08-21 02:48 PM
Kaluuya is the guest, and one of Jemele's first questions was "you sound JUST like Fred Hampton, how did you do that?"
13423286, Love me some Jemele Hill but, she was recently on Vlad TV.
Posted by 81 DUN, Mon Feb-08-21 04:46 PM
Just on that end she loses some points.
13423290, can't really fault that thinking. vlad? seems like something she'd pass on.

13423608, Watched the movie a couple nights ago...

I think he did well with his voice. Movie was good. There’s a lot of people who don’t know who Fred Hampton was. Hopefully, this will change that.
13423665, I appreciate her critique

https://www.complex.com/music/noname-passed-judas-and-the-black-messiah-soundtrack

I'll still probably check it out. If what Noname is correct, it's kinda weird to see Fred Hampton Jr. supporting the film. I'm really over Black liberals telling the stories of Black radicals. It's always watered down.
13423668, well, the movie isn’t called Fred Hampton
Posted by legsdiamond, Thu Feb-11-21 01:29 PM
so I’m not sure I get her angle in this. Maybe they presented it as a Fred Hampton film but the trailer pretty much gave the impression the story would be about Darius more than Fred Hampton.

I’m looking forward to it.

13423681, And all of this is deeply problematic nm
Posted by afrogirl_lost, Thu Feb-11-21 02:52 PM
13423683, Its called Judas and the Messiah
Posted by legsdiamond, Thu Feb-11-21 02:59 PM
I expect it to be problematic since its probably more about the Judas

13423728, And that is deeply problematic nm

13424014, Not sure why this is a problem?..
Posted by CyrenYoung, Sun Feb-14-21 02:37 PM
..Its a film that details how Hampton was set up and assassinated.

That doesn't prevent anyone from showcasing other facets of Hampton's life & politics. As a matter of fact, this film might be the spark for another aspiring or accomplished director to delve further into Hampton's life.

Managing expectations.

..and miles to go before i sleep...
13424015, exactly. no film is the definitive canon.
Posted by Damali, Sun Feb-14-21 03:24 PM
its a fictionalized film of real events

we put this kinda stuff on too much of a pedestal

folks should just watch the documentary instead.
