13420052, Talking cars on a Tuesday
Posted by MEAT, Tue Jan-12-21 01:29 PM
I either made a really bad purchase or a really good one
And as I sit here worrying about it I'm sharing that shit to okp
Because I'm too embarrassed to tell my friends and family.

So I have an i3, I love it and then as a family we have a 2014 Civic
Before the i3 I had a Scion TC. I have a thing for small cars because a majority of the time it's just you in it.

Then baby 1 came and getting that car seat in and out was tough, so we drove that Civic a lot. And it doesn't have a go. Plus we were looking to be a bit outdoorsy and that was before COVID hit, now we don't want to be around nobody.

Then baby 2 came along and two car seats is a car filler. Right now we can do a road trip or an adventure trip, but not both. We either pack a pack and play and stroller, or bikes and skateboards and colors.

So I was looking for more room AND a 4x4 because I'd love to drive on the beach.

Well I found one from a dealership
online
200 miles away :-\
but I think they were going to send it to auction. Looking at the maintenance history it's been serviced every 3k miles and it has low miles.
But dag ... like who buys a car online without touching it or seeing it with their own eyes. They sent me video of everything. But man.
Worst case, I can sell it for parts or sell it outright at the price.
13420054, We need to know what you purchased before we're able to comment.
Posted by FLUIDJ, Tue Jan-12-21 01:33 PM
but no, you didn't make a mistake....
No matter how it shakes out, you learned a lesson!
13420060, RE: We need to know what you purchased before we're able to comment.

:-\

2010 Xterra with 160k miles on it.
13420063, It could go either way....I personally think those will be cult classics eventually
Posted by FLUIDJ, Tue Jan-12-21 01:41 PM
They were the last of a dying breed of rugged, unique looking SUVs before everyone went all "crossover"
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cjBzrtACgo8

The maintenance records look promising...and if you got it for a good price, then it could easily be a come up.

13420066, Old girl I dated had one and it was a tank
Posted by MEAT, Tue Jan-12-21 01:42 PM
My parents maxima last past 300k miles and I know they didn't take care of that joint.
13420074, you’ve always struck me as a pretty reasonable dude...
Posted by Dstl1, Tue Jan-12-21 02:11 PM
so, just understand that it’s going to have shit go wrong with it...and you’ll be good. Every car/manufacturer has its inherent issues. I will say, you did dodge the worst year of the Xterra. 2005-2006 was an absolute nightmare for that joint.
13420079, There's something about 07 to 2017 that's a sweet spot for me
Posted by MEAT, Tue Jan-12-21 02:17 PM
Enough tech to not be dated or unsafe
But little enough tech so that it's still familiar and affordable.

I'll go down to the 90s for a under 2k beater if needed, but I don't remember anything good coming out of that 98 to 2007 time frame.

The most memorable thing was Saturn "came out" and folks were trying some neo retro, but nothing I can remember about quality.
13420055, well, damb.
Posted by infin8, Tue Jan-12-21 01:33 PM
'plairs fuck up sometimes' *shrug*

Can you reach out to an independent mechanic in that area and pay him to inspect it for you?
13420059, I wouldn't bother with that at all. Buying cars online site unseen
Posted by FLUIDJ, Tue Jan-12-21 01:35 PM
has been the wave for a good minute.....
And i'm positive after covid, it's going to be just as mainstream as buying groceries online has become... .FINALLY....

13420072, Yeah, I purchased both of our current vehicles from Carvana...
Posted by Dstl1, Tue Jan-12-21 02:05 PM
and couldn’t be happier. Referred several people who bought from them. I don’t see myself ever stepping foot in a dealership, to buy a car, again. We do have warranties, as well.
13420075, What'd they smell like?
Posted by MEAT, Tue Jan-12-21 02:11 PM
13420085, new car smell
Posted by Dstl1, Tue Jan-12-21 02:24 PM
.
13420065, Oh it's getting on a rig tomorrow and will be here after lunch
Posted by MEAT, Tue Jan-12-21 01:42 PM
It's already being paid for.
I'll wait to listen to it run in person before I take it to anyone to see what I'll need to fix.

The idea is that this is a road trip car, so I'm not spending too much money on it. Just that it's safe, spacious, and can do all of the things.

13420062, I recently sold a car private party to a guy across the country
Posted by sectachrome86, Tue Jan-12-21 01:39 PM
He only saw photos. Wired me the money and arranged for shipping. Its not all that uncommon these days.

Depending on how picky you are it will probably be fine.
13420064, carsandbids.com.... my new favorite site. Just found out about it last week

Make a list of all the quirks and features of the site.
13420188, Indeed! I get irked at the comments section though....
Posted by FLUIDJ, Wed Jan-13-21 09:36 AM
Done seen them hype up some really subpar vehicles and then the bid gets driven up....

13420080, my brother bought his last cars in NC and Florida
Posted by legsdiamond, Tue Jan-12-21 02:20 PM
he lives in GA.

but personally, I wouldn’t want my road trip car to have 160K miles on it.
13420083, If I pay more I'm gonna want to use it more
Posted by MEAT, Tue Jan-12-21 02:21 PM
And that'd mean more gas, and a more expensive car
13420082, Not sure the extent of the maintenance they showed you...
Posted by Dstl1, Tue Jan-12-21 02:21 PM
but with it being a 4x4...that means there’s a bit more nomenclature, beyond just the transmission to keep maintained.
13420084, The carfax showed every dealership maintenance trip

13420086, Why is HomeLink (garage door opener) always powered on?
Posted by PimpTrickGangstaClik, Tue Jan-12-21 02:24 PM
I just realized a few days that I've been giving people an easy pass into my house through the garage when I park outside.

I assumed that the garage door opener in the car only works when the key is in it. I mean, that makes perfect sense, security-wise.
But nope. Don't need a key at all. So someone could bust out the window, press the button, and waltz in the house through the garage.

So I just deprogrammed it. But it makes no sense. Why in the world would it need to be always powered on?
13420091, Great question. I think it comes down to the manufacturer...
Posted by Dstl1, Tue Jan-12-21 02:38 PM
I’ve seen some that were powered on at all times and some that weren’t. So, someone had the thought to run it through the ignition, while some are connected to b+. I also had someone tell me that it was always powered, for memory reasons, but we disproved that one, at a dealership I used to work at.
13420116, Yeah googling around shows it depends on the car
Posted by PimpTrickGangstaClik, Tue Jan-12-21 03:55 PM
Some always on, some not.

I'll just deal with inconvenience of not using the feature. I'm just glad I realized it.
13420104, Do I really need to be concerned about not driving my car during COVID?
Posted by SuiteLady, Tue Jan-12-21 03:18 PM
2013 Honda Civic, new battery in 2020, less than 100,000 miles, parked inside. At this point I only drive it once a week and that is just because I think I need to.
13420108, I once let a car sit two years outdoors in the elements
Posted by MEAT, Tue Jan-12-21 03:20 PM
My MIL started it every now and then.
I wouldn't recommend it, but at the same time ... what are you gonna do?
13420110, Thanks!
Posted by SuiteLady, Tue Jan-12-21 03:21 PM
13420113, the battery and the tires

13420171, I've had to get after 3 of my adopted sisters for batteries
Posted by spenzalii, Wed Jan-13-21 12:04 AM
Told them start the car and drive it around the block a bit at least once a week, especially in the cold. Now I just give them Amazon links to a jump box since they don't want to listen to me.
13420346, mfs going to be mad when the temp is 20 below they turn the key
Posted by Rjcc, Wed Jan-13-21 05:19 PM
and it just clicks

the temperature takes the pop out of that battery quick

13420348, so quick...
Posted by Dstl1, Wed Jan-13-21 05:31 PM
good batteries get tested, marginal batteries get broken.
13420354, One of my sisters was gone away for a month. Everything dead
Posted by spenzalii, Wed Jan-13-21 05:38 PM
She went to Alabama to visit her dad before Turkey Day and was only supposed to be gone 2 weeks tops. Didn't make it back until after Xmas. The battery was toast. 2 jumps later I had to take her to Autozone and get another one on warranty exchange. Had she left the keys with me it may have been fine. But nooooooooo.....
13420122, you're doing enough.
Posted by tariqhu, Tue Jan-12-21 04:17 PM
that more so applies to people letting cars sit for a month or more, with no cranking or anything.

you're fine.
13420155, Wife bought from Carvana online (his & her cars now)
Posted by kajsidog, Tue Jan-12-21 07:31 PM
Loved the process, that said she did have a week to change her mind.

Never thought we'd be the couple to have his and her cars but now we have 2014 Tesla Model S 85s in different colors, dark green and dolphin gray. She's always had a manual so it kinda blows my mind she's gone full golf cart.

13420254, Car came in today.
Posted by MEAT, Wed Jan-13-21 01:05 PM
There’s no scratches on the roof rack and the top storage has clearly never been opened. No scratches on the skid plates either. Dude drove this thing like a daily driver.
13420260, so....good?
Posted by mista k5, Wed Jan-13-21 01:25 PM
13420262, I'm working at the moment, so I need to finish insurance paperwork
Posted by MEAT, Wed Jan-13-21 01:29 PM
Then I'll drive it. I hear a slight ticking, but that's in idle.
There's tire light on but it was also 30 this morning. I inflated a bit, but I didn't want to overdo it
13420289, A rack makes anything look good.....

13420425, That's wild...wonder if he knew it opened?

.
13420427, There's not a single scratch on the roof rack, not one
Posted by MEAT, Thu Jan-14-21 12:09 PM
On the trunk bend, which is plastic, there's no scratches either.
I have an appointment Monday to put it up in the air and get a deep look at it, but, so far so good.
13420485, i'ma call it a Come Up then....nice!

Needed alignment. Cabin filter change and I’m got the transmission fluid flushed. Other than that. No problems.

Sigh of relief.
13420920, high-five!

congrats, that's awesome.
