But don't as reliably help the attacker. Saw somebody, somewhere (maybe here) describe a study on this last year. But the idea was basically that they're getting less common in debates because you may end up boosting a different opponent instead of yourself.

Don't really have an opinion about that. I just thought it was interesting and hearing it has made debate tactics a bit more coherent to me.
