13414066, Is hookah still a thing?
Posted by ThaTruth, Wed Dec-31-69 07:00 PM
It seemed like it’s popularity peaked like 10-15 years ago now the only places that have it are hood black clubs or people from past eras who have one at home.

I may have not done it right but I never got anything out of it other than the social aspect. I do cigars and cigaweed but that’s about it.

Poll question: Is hookah still a thing?

Poll result (10 votes)
Yes (4 votes)Vote
No (2 votes)Vote
I’m black (4 votes)Vote

So, I guess? In some places?
13414146, yeah in ATL we still going hard. Aino pandemic

Cigar bars, strip clubs, and regular clubs are going steady, and all of em got hookah girls.
13414074, I live in a very ethnic part of town
Posted by bigkarma, Wed Nov-18-20 12:14 AM
My neighborhood has a large Ethiopian and Somali population, as well as Middle Eastern, Indian and Pakistani. So, hookah isn't a trendy thing...it's a thing.
13414084, ^^

13414076, i think its just a black thing now
Posted by BrooklynWHAT, Wed Nov-18-20 12:40 AM
i remember 10 years ago in college it was huge w/ everyone
13414158, What?
Posted by Hitokiri, Wed Nov-18-20 03:32 PM
A "black thing" that people of middle eastern and south asian cultures invented and are the largest consumers of?
13414160, do not engage
Posted by CherNic, Wed Nov-18-20 03:33 PM
lmao there are a few names....I REFUSE
13414246, y'all superwokes kill me lol...
Posted by ThaTruth, Thu Nov-19-20 09:45 AM
>A "black thing" that people of middle eastern and south asian
>cultures invented and are the largest consumers of?

and ^^^ those people marketed that culture heavily outside of their communities to the point that there were actual rap songs about "Pass me the hookah" but I guess I made all that up too
13414250, So that makes it a black thing lol
Posted by Hitokiri, Thu Nov-19-20 10:18 AM
ok bruh. definitely about wokeness and not about being exposed to different of kinds of people.

Is tequila a black thing too?
How about anime. That a black thing?
13414253, yes, it became popular outside of that culture...
Posted by ThaTruth, Thu Nov-19-20 10:31 AM

>How about anime. That a black thing?

it remains popular it certain demographics more than others, its really not that complicated.

Certain brand gain popularity based off references in rap songs.
13414255, Which is not what was being disputed.
Posted by Hitokiri, Thu Nov-19-20 10:38 AM
But go ahead and change the argument from brooklynwhat's "it's just a black thing" to "well yeah, lots of different kinds of people participate in this activity"

13414269, literally what he said.
Posted by Hitokiri, Thu Nov-19-20 11:32 AM
literally what i disputed.
But go off tho.
13414272, Did they actually market it to Black folk tho?
Posted by legsdiamond, Thu Nov-19-20 11:52 AM
or did we just jump on it late as fuck?

13414290, RE: Did they actually market it to Black folk tho?
Posted by ThaTruth, Thu Nov-19-20 12:58 PM
>or did we just jump on it late as fuck?

combination of both, those folks were running the hookah lounges that became popular with black folks, then promoter/club owner types took it to another level
13414280, i wasnt introduced to it nor have i experienced it like that
Posted by BrooklynWHAT, Thu Nov-19-20 12:27 PM
in college it was just something everyone did
after college every hookah spot i've ever been to is majority black regardless of where in the country i've been to it at
and only black folks have brought it up as something to go do. never any of the ME or Asian folks i know

*shrug*
13414086, If not for the pandemic... yes, it would still be a thing
Posted by legsdiamond, Wed Nov-18-20 09:20 AM
but I think a lot of places that jumped on it we’re starting to move on to the next thing.

I wonder if vaping hurt the hookah industry?

I’m Charlotte there is a popular spot called Crave that was known for its hookahs and it was legit. But there were hood spots who tried and did it poorly..

13414090, As far as I can tell, it is
Posted by darrylclark, Wed Nov-18-20 10:05 AM
Its a bunch of people in Baltimore selling them also for in home use.
13414181, Wait, it was popular 10 to 15 years ago?
Posted by legsdiamond, Wed Nov-18-20 04:18 PM
Well damn.. this I didn’t know

or maybe I didn’t know about it because it isn’t true.
13414293, First time I ever heard about it was like almost 20 years ago now
Posted by mrhood75, Thu Nov-19-20 01:31 PM
But that we an Iraqi kid who used to be a housemate. First time someone told me that they were hitting up a hookah bar was probably 17 years ago. That's when they started popping up out here in the Bay.
13414302, I don’t remember them being popular in Philly or BK
Posted by legsdiamond, Thu Nov-19-20 02:11 PM
15 years ago but then again, I started slowing down on partying back then.

Seems like the lounges really jumped on them and once you couldn’t smoke cigarettes indoors they just exploded.

I think that’s the main attraction but I think vapes hurt the biz model

13414194, You see hookahs in every corner store... so yeah
Posted by theScholar3000, Wed Nov-18-20 05:08 PM
With covid I don't know how the communal vibe is received now,
I mean even if you changing the tips it just don't feel safe.
but it's hella popular in the hood, my Aunt was talking about
having a hookah/wine party before the covid numbers starting
spiking again...

Come, I'll tear up all my poems
for just a little piece
of you...
13414252, based on the Arab Bodega store around the corner
Posted by jimi, Thu Nov-19-20 10:24 AM
I would say it's always been a thing..

during the hot summers, the employees at said Bodega occasionally sit outside the store, silky shirt unbuttoned, as they take a pull from their hookah...

they sell hookahs too.. it's pretty much a smoke bodega shop

@silentintellect
13414450, you still see it around here but not in the clubs though
Posted by Garhart Poppwell, Sat Nov-21-20 08:03 PM
they took the hookah stuff out and put in flavored air machines
