13413334, Thanksgiving Turkey or something else?
Posted by SuiteLady, Wed Dec-31-69 07:00 PM
My aunt (RIP) was not a fan of turkey so her and her kids would roast a chicken. There has been at least one Thanksgiving that I spent alone and I did salmon. But for the most part we do a small turkey or a couple game hens.

Extra question: Do you guys eat turkey wings the rest of the year? My mom has always cooked these with either rice or egg noodles - it is delicious! But outside of KC I haven't had good luck finding turkey wings in the grocery store when it is not Thanksgiving shopping time. Rarely found them in LA. Never see them in STL. Might be more of a neighborhood thing and less of a city thing, but I was just wondering.

Poll question: Thanksgiving Turkey or something else?

13413350, I eat baked turkey wings, at minimum, once a week...
Posted by Dstl1, Tue Nov-10-20 05:24 PM
they dried up, a bit when the pandemic hit...they're out there, though. Walmart stopped having them and never seemed to get anymore. I usually get luckiest at Dierberg's...so, when I see them, I grab several packs. Schnuck's is clutch, sometimes, too.
13413365, RE: I eat baked turkey wings, at minimum, once a week...

I feel confident we live in different areas based on the tornado thing that touched down a few years back and what you posted about damage in your neighborhood. Out this way, I can't find them. But I will keep looking. When I was home in KC last week my mom randomly fixed this for dinner and I ate too much just based on the fact that it had been so long.
13413351, Last Thanksgiving, my wife hit up a local BBQ restaurant...
Posted by Dstl1, Tue Nov-10-20 05:26 PM
and got 2 racks of ribs and several pounds of burnt ends. It was a good look. We just kinda did whatever we wanted with the sides. I was laid up watching football in a food coma, but damn, it was worth it.
13413355, turkey wings...
Posted by Trinity444, Tue Nov-10-20 05:40 PM
we make them the same as your family. I had a hard time finding them when I lived in Charlotte - I could find the legs but not the wings. There’s a difference in taste, to me...

funny, my mother picked up some today (for thanksgiving) she came in fussing about how the price went up. lol

13413368, It does taste different but I like both. Can't find either in my neighborhood.
Posted by SuiteLady, Tue Nov-10-20 07:22 PM
13413382, oh, I’ll eat it if that’s all you got...
Posted by Trinity444, Tue Nov-10-20 09:47 PM
the wings are special tho lol

/

have you tried a store in the hood? they usually have them...the “wings”. the legs aren’t as hard to find

13413361, Duck is a great alternative too
Posted by FLUIDJ, Tue Nov-10-20 06:14 PM
13413384, ain’t nobody eating duck lol
Posted by Trinity444, Tue Nov-10-20 09:48 PM

13413537, Only if you buy it from Sho'nuff
Posted by FLUIDJ, Thu Nov-12-20 09:41 AM
13413548, If it is cooked right it is not greasier than dark meat on chicken
Posted by SuiteLady, Thu Nov-12-20 11:34 AM
well maybe a little bit but not by much
13413569, Is greasy the same as oily? I dunno...the dark meat comparison is good
Posted by FLUIDJ, Thu Nov-12-20 01:40 PM
though....

Posted by FLUIDJ, Thu Nov-12-20 01:41 PM
Glad I took a stab at it because i'd have never known. It wasn't that hard to prepare either.

Fix yourself a decent meal if you can! If not order something good.
13413387, ours is limited...
Posted by Trinity444, Tue Nov-10-20 09:54 PM
usually we host but with Covid everyone on their own. my mother still cooking way too much food. She’s already started. I can send you a plate LOL
13413369, I usually make a Tofurkey or a Field Roast
Posted by mind_grapes, Tue Nov-10-20 08:11 PM
and go all out on the sides: garlic mash potatoes, roasted veggies, wild rice, biscuits from scratch, mushroom gravy, green beans, and usually something non-traditional like asian slaw with peanut dressing, and sometimes vegan pumpkin cheesecake (if I'm able to make it ahead of time cus it takes a day to set)

Thanksgiving is by far my favorite holiday.
13413376, Pizza.. fuck it.. that's what the kids want. That's what we shall have.
Posted by My_SP1200_Broken_Again, Tue Nov-10-20 09:30 PM
13413381, lol! Get some really good pizza too! From a place you wouldn't order
Posted by SuiteLady, Tue Nov-10-20 09:42 PM
from on a regular day. That is how I would do it! In my town that would be either Pi Pizzeria or Dewey's Pizza. These are not places I would just order from on a regular Tuesday night, such at Dominoes or Pizza Hut.
13413380, I like ham
Posted by will_5198, Tue Nov-10-20 09:39 PM
it's easy and goes with everything on the table.

I'm gonna do a full turkey for the first time in probably 10 years tho.
13413803, gross.

13413822, I enjoy ham at Christmas for some reason

13414520, the fam wants ham this year, so its ham w/Orange Ginger glaze...

13413401, Traditional Thanksgiving for me
Posted by legsdiamond, Wed Nov-11-20 07:54 AM
I don’t eat turkey dinner any other time of the year.

13413403, turkey wings, turkey necks, maybe oxtails
Posted by CherNic, Wed Nov-11-20 09:13 AM
Christmas we may do some sliced ham but usually okra soup, turkey again, oxtails again

I legit put some turkey wings in my crockpot this morning. Tis the season.
13413433, my one time of year to eat a turkey dinner
Posted by Amritsar, Wed Nov-11-20 12:58 PM
and then leftover Turkey Sandwiches for several days.

13413539, Yep, it's about the only day I want a turkey dinner
Posted by KiloMcG, Thu Nov-12-20 09:54 AM
We usually do traditional turkey, dressing, greens etc for Thanksgiving. For the Christmas holiday we do something different. I'm not ready for another turkey dinner that soon.
13413542, Yeah.. this shit is wild to me
Posted by legsdiamond, Thu Nov-12-20 10:31 AM
We have like 363 days to eat all that other shit but people are like “I’m tired of turkey dinner on that one day so I’m eating lasagna”

Just cracks me up because how many people eat turkey dinners at random times during the year that it gets to be overkill for thanksgiving?

I don’t even think about turkey unless I slip up and get turkey deli slices.
13413550, If I could eat turkey wings as often as DSTL does, I would.
Posted by SuiteLady, Thu Nov-12-20 11:38 AM
I might start stocking up during the holiday so I can cook them in the months after.
13413554, There is a Greek restaurant in Charlotte that has a Thanksgiving dish
Posted by legsdiamond, Thu Nov-12-20 11:49 AM
It’s called Landmark.

That shit is slamming. Almost forgot I used to order it once or twice during the year at random times.

I’ve been planning our dinner in my head. I don’t want to spend all day cooking so I’m thinking of my cheat code. Might hit up a few soul food spots for sides to save on time.

That Trader Joe’s Mac n Cheese is slamming too so may just get a few of those. So lazy yet so efficient.

13413692, Trader Joes Mac N Cheese...tell me more...
Posted by CherNic, Fri Nov-13-20 09:29 AM
I just bought Patti LaBelle's mac and cheese, haven't made it yet though

Pretty much everything I buy from TJs is bussin. Almost got hooked on the orange chicken this summer. And the shrimp burgers? my lawd
13413580, Just Thanksgiving for me usually.
Posted by KiloMcG, Thu Nov-12-20 01:58 PM
And, like you, my only other turkey consumption pretty much any other time of the year would be in sandwich form.
13413540, sides

Posted by SuiteLady, Thu Nov-12-20 11:37 AM
and mixed greens
13413552, I told my wife I don’t fuck with conk
Posted by legsdiamond, Thu Nov-12-20 11:41 AM
She was like.. “you sure?”

Apparently her grannies dressing always had oysters and conk.
13413555, Conch
Posted by JFrost1117, Thu Nov-12-20 11:52 AM
I had it from a literal hole in the wall in the Bahamas and it was cool but I don’t know if I could rock with it outside of the fritters.
13413576, yes, mac and cheese
Posted by Ashy Achilles, Thu Nov-12-20 01:49 PM
any sides will do
don't need turkey
13413578, The turkey has always been pretty much for show...and leftovers
Posted by bigkarma, Thu Nov-12-20 01:57 PM
The turkey has usually been my responsibility over the years. My brother buys a Honeybaked Ham and everyone else contributes various sides.

A few elders would make chitterlings and various other dishes that have pretty much faded from the family menu as they've passed on. My late Mom was the last of the chitlin' cookers.

Honestly, no one really eats the turkey too much, day of. But, everyone takes some home, and the rest of the week I look forward to turkey sandwiches.
13413582, I prefer non-traditional holiday meals.
Posted by Cold Truth, Thu Nov-12-20 02:08 PM
My wife absolutely loves a traditional thanksgiving dinner, so that's what we've done, with Christmas usually being something else entirely. Lasagna one year, a red beans and rice w/grilled chicken and cornbread another year, enchiladas another.

She's vegan now, so I have no clue what to expect.

My daughter refuses to eat much outside of her standard staples, and my son couldn't care less about a turkey.

I may go all the way rogue this year and do homemade flatbread pizzas or some shit.
13413625, yeah...
Posted by Trinity444, Thu Nov-12-20 06:33 PM
my mother cooks soul food all year so thanksgiving is nothing but intensified. she’s preparing now. I honestly don’t think she can cook a small meal.

I’ll make my usual two caramel cakes...
13413644, Fried chicken, mac n cheese, potato salad, baked beans...
Posted by PROMO, Thu Nov-12-20 08:46 PM
basically cookout food.

I love "alt" cuisine on holidays. Plus, MY family makes the traditional stuff so if I want Turkey, mashed potatoes, etc I can take a 20 min drive over there and get some.
13413698, We do a capon and a smoked turkey breast
Posted by afrogirl_lost, Fri Nov-13-20 10:29 AM
because no one really likes regular turkey. This year we're making a whole roasted salmon, cornish hens, and several pasta dishes. I do like turkey wings with beans and rice. We make it once a month or so. I get mine from the Farmer's Market.
13413802, cornish hen >>> turkey

13414435, I can't wait for Thanksgiving this year which is unusual for so many reasons
Posted by SuiteLady, Sat Nov-21-20 12:41 PM
- I usually don't care about holiday's one way or the other
- I lost more than one family member this year and both were stressful circumstances
- COVID 19
- I am furloughed for the Thanksgiving week

I don't understand why I am suddenly so excited about this holiday. Logically I shouldn't be.
13414494, I’m not...
Posted by Trinity444, Sun Nov-22-20 09:23 PM
our house is usually the jump off, now we can’t lol

13414507, I love Thanksgiving dinner. I’m cheating this year
Posted by legsdiamond, Mon Nov-23-20 10:05 AM
usually we have a big dinner but this year it’s only 4 of us and 2 toddlers.

Going to get a few quick sides from Trader Joe’s or Publix and cook a small ass turkey and maybe a few pieces of ham.

I used to scoff at people who ordered out on Thanksgiving but I’m all about some heat and serve. Might cop a frozen pasta from a local shop too for the hell of it.

13414560, my mother ain’t letting nothing mess up her thanksgiving, lol
Posted by Trinity444, Mon Nov-23-20 09:50 PM
table settings laid and the spread finna be lovely but she cooking way too much food. this her thing tho...
13414514, Porchetta

I'm trying my hand this year at making this pork deliciousness. I found pork belly and I'm gonna wrap it around a loin and season with garlic and herbs. Yum.

13414519, Jerk chicken is a good move.
Posted by GOMEZ, Mon Nov-23-20 12:14 PM
you still get the 'bird' experience, but without a wholeass turkey to eat. Plus it's always good, and there's all kinds of caribbean style sides you could serve w/it that are still thanksgiving-y.
13414518, Anyone got a good mac & cheese recipe? Or anything else....
Posted by sectachrome86, Mon Nov-23-20 12:04 PM
Help, I'm white and my seasoning shelf contains only 2 unopened containers of parsley flakes
13414557, It’s 2020. This year it’s Trader Joe’s Mac n Cheese
Posted by legsdiamond, Mon Nov-23-20 09:03 PM
Usually I make it come scratch but I’m cheating this year.

13414559, No judgement here, TJ’s mac is amazing
Posted by sectachrome86, Mon Nov-23-20 09:27 PM
I got rotisserie chicken, fuck it.
13414578, I have a brined turkey from TJ that I’m cooking
Posted by legsdiamond, Tue Nov-24-20 08:03 AM
I’m getting mash potatoes and dressing from Whole Foods.

Just not in the mood to spend all day cooking this year.

13414617, I got the full spread from WF last year, it was ass
Posted by sectachrome86, Tue Nov-24-20 01:00 PM
It came with a smoked turkey which was pretty good, but the sides were basura.

I tried to not do anything. My girlfriend asked me what I wanted to make for thanksgiving and I said "cereal". That didn't go over well.
13414625, Guess I’m going to have to put some love on these mashed potatoes
Posted by legsdiamond, Tue Nov-24-20 01:16 PM
and by love I mean salt and turkey drippings.

two more days til we eat
she knows how to get us ready...

that’s thanksgiving to me, our traditions (me and my house)
nothing to do with the Christopher and them...
