13411201, We had a cross fit fitness challenge
Posted by legsdiamond, Tue Nov-03-20 02:45 PM
My first day we did 4 sets of 500 meters with burpees and box jumps in between or some other exercises.

I thought the rowing would be the cool down.

But since it’s timed people are all” go go go!!!”

and I didn’t want to look like a lil bitch

I couldn’t even lift my foot to get into the car.. just fell into that shit. Luckily no one saw me.
13411237, lol...who were you trying to impress?

13411195, No, but I've rowed/canoed IRL and it's a great activity.

Rafting too, if you don't want to have to put so much muscle behind the oar/paddle.

Rowing (w/ 2 oars) and canoeing w/ a paddle both work the heck out of your back and shoulders. Probably the same for rowing machines.

If I was buying for a home gym, I'd cop a full cage with a row machine built on, like this: https://www.americanfitness.net/images/products/detail/F430_w_F200.jpg

That way you could adjust the angle from overhead, front, etc. And you can use the cage for other things too.

I don't have a cage, so I do dumbbell rows and pull-ups at the park to target my back.
13411198, I don't fck with lakes and rivers and shit like that yo....
Posted by FLUIDJ, Tue Nov-03-20 02:39 PM
But I often see the Georgetown Crew team practicing on my ride in to work across the Potomac River... that shit looks smooth as hell!

13411208, I had JUST started using the rower at the gym before COVID hit
Posted by Oak27, Tue Nov-03-20 03:17 PM
I haven't been back to the gym since, but I was really starting to hit my groove on it. Definitely my favorite form of cardio since it's hitting the entire body, not just my legs.
13411210, I'm good for a sprint on the erg machine. 500 meters is my sweet spot

13411242, Fuck yes! I love it.

Though it is currently killing me. I took a seven month pandemic break from my gym, that is one third rowing per workout, and I'm struggling on that bitch so far. I didn't fall off on the tread as much as I did on the rower, but I'm so glad to be back. Also, a good friend of mine who lives close just got a rower for his house so I'm hoping to get a couple extra sessions in when I can. It's such a great workout. It hits 85% of your muscles. Shit is great.

And I definitely ain't that swole 😂
13411517, I keep reading that it's tough to get going. Is getting the right form down
Posted by FLUIDJ, Wed Nov-04-20 09:47 AM
the biggest challenge??
Or is it just because it's a full body workout making it so intense?

13411870, The latter, but correct form is also important.
Posted by KiloMcG, Wed Nov-04-20 09:15 PM
Haha in fact a couple weekends ago Boomerang was on and Eddie, Martin and David Allen Grier were rowing in one scene and I clowned their form. Haha
13411478, It's been many many months off
Posted by Numba_33, Wed Nov-04-20 08:47 AM
because I'm way to scared to go to an indoors gym in the middle of this pandemic, but indoor rowing is a nice form of cardio that doesn't have a high impact on the joints like running on a treadmill does.

If I had the dollars, I'd love to try out a water based indoor rowing machine that uses a chamber of water as the form of resistance instead of the more common wind based ones.

Here's a link to what I'm referring to: https://www.waterrower.com/ .
13411512, We use water rowers.
Posted by KiloMcG, Wed Nov-04-20 09:42 AM
13411515, Is there a big difference
Posted by Numba_33, Wed Nov-04-20 09:45 AM
between the water rowers and the cheaper wind ones?
13411573, short list was WaterRower & Concept2 Model D....
Posted by FLUIDJ, Wed Nov-04-20 10:54 AM
from all the research...it seemed that the biggest advantage to the WaterRower was aesthetic & noise. It's prettier and quieter. It's won a bunch of design awards and it's definitely appealing to look at...but there's a cost premium to get that.

The Concept2 Model D seems to be the top rated across the board. It's louder....but reliability and build quality seems to be leaps and bounds above every other manufacturer...oh it's Made in USA too... it's also cheaper than WaterRower's cheapest model I think...

Both have been on back order for months though....

Amazon briefly had stock on the Model D yesterday. The wife said "Pull the trigger" so I did.... we'll see if it actually arrives...
She'll be the main one using it.... running is my jam..

13411871, Yeah my boy got a Concept2 Model D. Found it on Amazon last week.
Posted by KiloMcG, Wed Nov-04-20 09:19 PM
Haven't tried it yet. I've only used the water rower so I can't speak on any differences or preferences.
13411520, What did you do to get the proper form down?

13411536, Keep the back straight
Posted by Numba_33, Wed Nov-04-20 10:02 AM
and focus on generating a majority of the pull from the legs, not the the arms or back.

The rowing machine is a cardio device, which means the rowing motion should be done in repetitive fashion. Each pull should be quick and easy to perform; not something where you have to strain and use max strength with each pull.
13411873, Legs first, lean back, then pull with the arms.
Posted by KiloMcG, Wed Nov-04-20 09:22 PM
Reverse that on the way back up. I was coached though, that's how I learned.
13411639, This may sound trifling...but the rower is too low.
Posted by bigkarma, Wed Nov-04-20 12:30 PM
I love stationary rowing and I acknowledge it as a great all over cardio/strength workout. However my rickity ass knees make getting down onto the rower, and moreover...getting up from it, mad awkward.

Why does it have to be inches off the ground?

I used to workout at a YMCA that had a large senior contingent. They had two rowers that sat higher off the ground. The same rowers as the other ones, just with taller legs...

Why can't they all be that high?! The rowers at my current gym are damn near flush to the floor. I'd have to lay down and flop onto and off of it.
13411651, Is this a good exercise to flatten moobs and a gut?
Posted by JFrost1117, Wed Nov-04-20 12:53 PM
13411874, Full body and a great burn.
Posted by KiloMcG, Wed Nov-04-20 09:24 PM
Supplement with pushups etc for the moobs.
