It can be a list of artists or songs.

Not an all-time favorite list...

Just stuff you feel the most as of October 2020

Can be current or old stuff

Feel free to add a lil bit about why you're digging these songs or artists right now if you like.

Let's connect through music!

Jay Electronica - A.P.I.D.T.A.
This song, man...I've lost 5 people to Covid...most recently a dude I went to high school with...one year older than me, with 3 beautiful kids. It's probably not a healthy song for me to listen to, but...here I am, bumping it back to back to back, most days.

the rest are just the vibe I'm on, right now.

Been thinking about the concept of toxic positivity lately, so I'm gonna say maybe it's exactly what you need. It's ok to go ahead and feel what you feel sometimes, brother. Sorry to hear about all those losses. Stay up, man.

Idk if it's just another 2020 revelation, but this sounds like a song Jaden Smith would make. No diss tho, I like Jaden's music.

13406926, 10 random artists & their songs that I'm playing a lot...
Posted by Marbles, Tue Oct-06-20 01:44 PM

Dinner Party "Sleepless Nights"

Journey/Steve Perry "Foolish Heart" and "Separate Ways" - We just watched a few old episodes of Behind the Music. After watching Journey, I went back to some of their stuff. These are my 2 favorites.

Emotional Oranges - "Personal"

Lianne La Havas - "Weird Fishes" - I'm not up on Radiohead so I'm not familiar with the original. But for some reason, this song caught my ear. The whole album is fantastic though.

Kaytranada & Durand Bernarr "Freefall"

Spoon "Hot Thoughts" and "Can I Sit Next To You?"

Stalley "My Thoughts" and "Tokyo Proverbs" - Like I said in the Lesson, I seem to let Stalley slip my mind until I see he has a new project out. I think he deserves more credit than he gets.

Stove God Cooks "Rolls Royce Brake Lights" - This album feels like it should be out of my wheelhouse but I can't stop listening to "Reasonable Drought."

Joell Ortiz "Reflection" - Another cat I feel is mad underrated.

Phonte "So Help Me God"

*I wish I liked the new Elzhi more. I've only given it 2 listens so maybe it'll grow on me after a few more. There's nothing wrong with it but it just didn't grab me the way I wanted it to.
13406940, its about time for some new Emotional Oranges

The Lianne cover of "Weird Fishes" is INSANE! Caught a friend off guard with that the other day and it's been a big summer favorite ever since.

I had "Sleepless Nights" on my list also!

One of the better joints on the album

>Journey/Steve Perry "Foolish Heart" and "Separate Ways"

Classic. Type of stuff you have to hear in the background on a Stranger Things episode lol.

>
>Emotional Oranges - "Personal"

Never heard of them, but this joint ain't bad.

>Lianne La Havas - "Weird Fishes" - I'm not up on Radiohead so

She's quite fantastic. Lovely voice and style. I do prefer the Radiohead original for capturing the mood of the song, but her gave it a nice sensual feel.

>Kaytranada & Durand Bernarr "Freefall"

Yo, I was wondering how I never heard this. Listened to a couple of songs from the album (immediately fell in love with "Midsection") and realized the single with Masego was so disappointed to me that I forgot all about the project. I missed out. There's some good stuff on here.

>
>Spoon "Hot Thoughts" and "Can I Sit Next To You?"

Nice lil vintage sound they got.

>Stove God Cooks "Rolls Royce Brake Lights" - This album
>feels like it should be out of my wheelhouse but I
>can't stop listening to "Reasonable Drought."

I feel you. Samples like that can be addictive.

>Joell Ortiz "Reflection" - Another cat I feel is mad
>underrated.

I fuck with this. My kinda vibe.

>Phonte "So Help Me God"

Can't really go wrong with Phonte spittin'.

Bill Withers - Can We Pretend
This popped up on my Spotify and it blew me away. Just a beautiful song.

https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=UBS6MM05KdY
Roosevelt - Montreal
This is some synth pop magic. Not sure how I found this, it’s pretty old 2013 I believe but it just has everything I want in a synth pop song. Bass line is grooving and the hook is sharp. It’s my Friday 5pm drive home anthem.

https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=KiuEFG0ZBd8
Dirty South - Goodie Mob
My wife loves this group. We played this coming back from the inlaws a few weeks back. First time I heard it I thought they were saying Dirty Side... that beat tho. Hypnosis.

https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=95T7Au2Ko8A
Pretty & Afraid - Jidenna
This album is awesome. I wish he made a video album for this because it’s cinematic af. My kids love this album too because we play it nonstop. Whoever put me on to this album.. thank you. Wouldn’t have known about it if not for OKP.

https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=QyH6tO65plY
You & I - Elder Island
Just cause.. her voice is whatever but the vibe is right and the background vocals on the hook are dope.

https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=Z2y85V8v8N8
Just to Get a Rep - Gangstarr
Not sure what happened but I felt like listening to old Gangstarr albums. This song and video always stood out and was on repeat when I got the album. Lil’ Dap always pissed me off but also had me shook when I watched the video. Pretty sure it was shot in B&W which was dope.

Orgoned - Kiasmos
Spy music shit. Instrumental murder music.

https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=sNM8eCc3gtA

This and the You & Ijoint take me back to the early 90's when house was on Black radio.

these are "old" and "new" songs:

Smoke DZA - Dark Web
GQ - Might As Well
Kamaiyah - Oakland Nights
Jack Gilinsky - Lose Somebody
August Alsina - Rounds
Swae Lee - Reality Check
Disclosure f. Mick Jenkins - Who Knew?
Jack Harlow - WARSAW
SAINt JHN - McDonald's Rich
Shad f. Skratch Bastid - Limoncello

...also, this list is bullshit cuz there's literally NO WAY i could pick my 10 faves right today because it changes hourly or based on how i'm feeling at the moment.

>Smoke DZA - Dark Web

I'm a huge T-Pain fan, so it didn't take much to sell me on this one. Nice vibe.

>Jack Gilinsky - Lose Somebody

Nice song. Catchy chorus. Not a huge fan of the second verse (sounds like Owl City) but everything else is cool.

>August Alsina - Rounds

Not Bad

>Swae Lee - Reality Check

Expected to like this more than I did... dude usually has some catchy melodies. This sounds lazy to me.

>Disclosure f. Mick Jenkins - Who Knew?

This was cool, but I discovered the joint with Common and its video thanks to it. That's the real gem imo lol.

>SAINt JHN - McDonald's Rich

This is hard. I'm officially checking for this guy.

>Shad f. Skratch Bastid - Limoncello

Very nice. I kinda forgot about Shad. Glad he's still at it.

10. Free - Deniece Williams

9. Sweet Baby - The Clarke/Duke project

8. Dreamin' - Vanessa Williams

7. I want to thank You - Alicia Myers

6. Forget me nots- Patrice Rushen

5. Wishing on a star - Rose Royce

4. Could it be I'm falling in love? - The Spinners

3. What cha gonna do with my lovin'? - Stephanie Mills

2. Suga honey Iced Tea - Kelis

1. I just got back - Parliament

Hmmmm....

These songs (and this Black soul style) is the only stuff I feel like mentioning with any "energy" even though I love "genre" music (music that brings to mind the genre more than my own "vibe")

13407027, Orion Sun - Coffee for Dinner takes top honors, followed by...
Posted by Nodima, Tue Oct-06-20 07:06 PM
The melody, the melancholy, all of it just really hits me and reminds me of so many past relationships that just kind of slipped into limbo for no discernable reason. The Weeknd reference is the heartbreaker rather than the banana peel slip.

Terrace Martin, Robert Glasper et al. - Sleepless Nights

Sort of like the Orion Sun song, this all hinges on a reference to an R&B song I love (in this case, a subtle nod to Usher) but also just really captures this feeling I have of wanting to be relaxed and content with where this moment in time is while constantly being reminded of how impossible that is. My actually favorite track from this is "Freeze Tag", but I came back to this song recently and it's the one I get most excited about right now.

Disclosure - Birthday (feat. Kehlani and Syd)

Struggling with a breakup I didn't want years after the fact, this song came across my radar right as a friend of mine who'd gotten married for insurance purposes right before quarantine to his girlfriend of over eight years was finalizing the paperwork to annul the marriage. If you've ever cared deeply for somebody and recognized that it wasn't working out, but still find yourself hoping they're doing alright time to time, this is a really fun expression of that idea.

Masego - Passport

This is always one of my favorite types of songs because it just sounds impossible to be sitting in the booth and decide, "yea, that's finished." This song stops and starts, lurches and lurks all over its three minute runtime. Sometimes Masego is rapping, sometimes he's in a high tenor, sometimes a low falsetto, sometimes the beat flirts with kicking into high gear and others its barely present.

Kevin Krauter - Pretty Boy

This song just hit me out of nowhere at the exact right time. It recalls the grungy, home recording aesthetic of Red House Painters but marries it to this very American Top 40 guitar line and vocal melody that brings the suburban teen in me bubbling back to the surface. There's nothing all that special about it, it just has a feel I wanted right now, and it makes a neat choice to start quiet and only get gradually louder but never truly noisy.

MICHELLE - THE BOTTOM

I could've put any number of MICHELLE tracks on this list, and often started to before deciding I really just needed to take it back to the source. Similar to something like Kendrick Lamar's "Swimming Pools", this is totally a party banger, but on closer introspection this is a pretty sad song about a self-destructive girl trying to bring a potential love interest down with her, and not just implying that's the case but straight up saying, "I'm not afraid to see the bottom, 'cause I will - and I WILL." It's one of the more interesting juxtapositions of music to lyrics I've heard since, I dunno, New Order?

Arlo Parks - Sophie

I'd put this and Coffee for Dinner up as a one-two punch for how I've felt this whole summer. Kind of similar to "The Bottom", this is from the point of view of a young girl over medicated and under loved who sells that experience as cool, but Parks' arrangement lets you know she's aware this isn't a story with a happy ending. That doesn't mean it's a total downer of a song, though, with this nice little counter melody that lingers around like a rainbow hoping everything will get better eventually.

Crooked Still - Ecstasy (Instrumental Edit)

Owed completely to one of the penultimate scenes of this year's most divisive blockbuster video game, The Last of Us Part II, I'm as fascinated by the digging in the crates it must have taken to be aware of the album this track is from as its potency within the narrative of the game itself. I'm not entirely sure I'd be as hooked on it as I am if it weren't for that, but even on its own I can safely say it's one of the more engrossing banjo, cello and steel guitar instrumental cuts I've heard. For whatever that's worth!

Joy Crookes - Yah / Element (Medley)

Absolutely HILARIOUS. It's pretty as hell, so when the restaurant is bustling you can play it without fear people will fully pick up on what's going on, but when the place is dead it'll get the staff cracking up in laughter as we stack wine bottles and plot seating arrangements for the night. In a normal year, I'd have plenty of fond memories set to this jazzy take on Kendrick's "make it look sexy" anthem; as is, I'll be taking this one to the grave.

Blue Scholars - 50 Thousand Deep

If you don't remember these guys, they were part of that Rawkus 50 promotion back in the day, and this was from their sophomore album. They're Seattle natives and wound up embroiled in the World Bank protests in the late-2000s, and this song was their response - it opens with the first protests, stamped down by military police, moves into a motivation speech sort of mid-section and then returns for the final verse with the successful second round of protests.

If there's any song that completely, emphatically captures what it feels like to be a member of the labor/protest class in 2020, it's this random song most people don't know or remember from 2008. I kind of shrugged this album off as a pleasant, charming 7/10 back then at the start of my crit career. 12 years later, it's the strongest reminder of my privilege to listen to a song like this and nod moderately before shuffling into something from Wilt Chamberlain 2.5.

Orion Sun - Coffee For Dinner
Big thumbs up. I like this.

Terrace Martin, Robert Glasper et al. - Sleepless Nights
Man I wanted to like this album more than I did, but I did like this song. I thought it was the best of the bunch.

Disclosure - Birthday (feat. Kehlani and Syd)
I really appreciate your breakdowns of why you like these songs, because I probably would've written this song off pretty quickly just from an aesthetic standpoint. Listening from your perspective gave it a life that I wouldn't have found in it otherwise.

Masego - Passport
Gotta appreciate his creativity even if the songs don't always end up being something I'd wanna revisit.

Kevin Krautner - Pretty Boy
This is pure fucking fire. I'll argue that there is definitely something special about it lol.

Michelle - The Bottom
It does have that uptempo melancholia to it. I'm a fan of the juxtaposition. Nice grooves on a lot of their songs. Mango sounds like it was HEAVILY inspired by "Can't Help It" by Michael Jackson if not just a straight up copy of the melody of the verses.

Arlo Parks - Sophie
That starts of really basic musically and gets really beautiful by the time the chorus rolls around. I also like that you delve in to the meanings of not only the lyrics but the meanings of the arrangements as well.

Crooked Still - Ecstacy (Instrumental Edit)
I haven't played the game, but the instrumental is nice. All the comments are about the game too lol.

Joy Crookes - Yah/Element
Yea, that was enjoyable. The clarity of her voice really stands out to me when listening to more of her work.

Blue Scholars - 50 Thousand Deep
I can appreciate the message, but I can't say it's my cup of tea aesthetically. I think it's really cool that you revisited it and saw the value in it in these times tho for sure.

Conway - Jesus Khrysis. I mean, the title says it all. That beat KNOCKS and Conway is a monster.

Conway f/ Freddie Gibbs - Seen Everything abut Jesus. It’s like normal raw Conway polished up just enough to give it that appeal, with Gibbs coming in and destroying it like usual.

2Pac - To Live and Die in LA - I don’t know...I’m a Laker and Dodger fan. I guess their playoff runs got me thinking about Kobe a lot. And just the title alone..“To Live and Die in LA”...and Pac. Damn. What a song too.

Radiohead - Optimistic - Because BShelly posted about Kid A in the Lesson. And that’s my favorite on that amazing album.

L.E.G.A.C.Y. - Crouching Writer - Huge Justus League kick ever since LB came back. And Leg has a new album coming. And damn, was he nice and did 9th ever consistently lace him. All evident on this one.

Joe Scudda - Door To My Life - Like I said....ever since LB came back. They were just the best at putting out the most relatable music possible.

Dornik - Hang On. It’s not summer anymore, but this whole album is a damn EARWORM, and this might be the biggest one of all. What an album.

Prince - If I Was Your Girlfriend. I like this album ever more now that I can actually hear it! Most necessary remaster ever? If they put out 36 Chambers with some knock to it, but keep that dirty rawness, I’ll reconsider but for now Sign O the Times got it.

Alright, that’s what I got, and I’m not forcing it to get to an arbitrary number.

13407711, My 10 songs
Posted by NorthWeezy, Sat Oct-10-20 09:27 AM
Ka - I Love (Mimi, Moms, Kev). Someone on my tl posted the video the other day. Hypnotic and beautiful.

The Emotions - Don't Ask My Neighbors

Love Unlimited - If You Want Me, Say It

Vybz Kartel - Any Weather. I never really 'got' Vybz before I heard this song. I think he's overrated, but he ripped this.

Kylie Minogue - Promises. I never thought that I'd be bumping Kylie's music. She'll always be Charlene from Neighbours to me, but that Body Language album had 4-5 good songs on there. This is one of them, produced by Kurtis Mantronik.

Milca - Le Monde. Hypnoz is my favourite Zouk producer.

Hot Cuisine - Who's Been Kissing You. Brit-funk from Sheffield (of all places). Some of the lyrics haven't aged well, but it's still a classic.

Anna Joyce - Nao Vales Nada. The song that introduced me to Kizomba almost ten years ago.

Light of the World - I'm So Happy.

Second Image - Life Is What You Make It. I've played this more than anything else. I like how it switches to reggae for the last third of the song.

Everything But The Girl - Each and Every One
* Heard this on one of Gilles Peterson's recent shows and the lyrics hit me right now. I ended up listening to their debut album and all this shit makes me want to go back to the early 90s and sit in some smoky lounge lmao

Marcos Valle - Estrelar
* Heard on an old episode of Abstract Radio...I think Prince Paul was the guest host that week? Just a good, happy song

Alexander O'Neal - Criticize
* Da GAWD. Hands down one of my favorite songs ever. Production, vocals, Lisa Keith killed the BGV. There's a concert of his from 1988 (?) and they stretch this song out like 15 minutes. I could watch it every day.

Kenny Bobien - I Shall Not Be Moved
* Heard on one of Deon Cole's disco/house Sunday sets. He's on hiatus right now and I miss the shit outta those sets.

Dan Hartman - Relight My Fire
* Also heard on a Deon Cole set. Added this to my workout playlist immediately.

Duval Timothy - Groundnut
* Heard on a BBC show...I think Moses Sumney covering for Gilles? Duval Timothy is a monster....his music is perfect for me right now.

Prince - In A Large Room With No Light
* The only 'new' track I really dug from the SOTT release. It's light, it's fun, kinda makes me wonder what a jazzier album before The Rainbow Children would have sounded like

I've been in the car so much less and even though I mainly listened to podcasts while driving, I know I'm listening to less music now too.

(Instrumentals)

Khruangbin - Mr. White
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F_Hs3iVLjZ4
This just perfect for anything from cruising around to playing around the house. I've even listened to this at the gym. Such an all purpose meditative track for me.

Georgia Anne Muldrow - Blackman
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bq2lbzw7R4M
This is under "instrumental" because I actually have the instrumental of the reprise on my list. That's not on Youtube tho. It's just a relaxing groove and I love the bass line.

(High Energy)

Santigold - Banshee
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ud6p20uxmOk
The energy of this song is unmatched. It sounds like a huge hit, but it wasn't. I just love Santigold. "Until you get outta my way, I don't wanna hear what you say."

(Hard Hitting Hip Hop and R&B flavor)

Casey Veggies - New Jack City
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZHB7gDa4a4Q
The producer kinda went nuts with the bass line. Plus I always like to hear Veggies talk fly shit in his level-headed-young-man kind of way.

Freddie Gibbs & Madlib - Gatdamn (NPR Tiny Desk version)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1alXHOMDBN4#t=2m4s
This whole performance could be on my list. I've been listening to this particular song a lot lately tho. Freddie paints some very vivid pictures and the way his rhymes flow is just next to none.

Bryson Tiller - Sorry Not Sorry
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EH3rfRSgKe4
First heard this in 2015 and haven't stopped playing it since. Timbo murdered the beat and Bryson went in with the "now I'm hot they all on me" energy.

(Atmospheric)

Sillus - Be Honest
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FTmAqSBC3CY
This song is kinda like nothing I've ever heard, but I just knew I wanted to keep hearing it. It's definitely a mood.

Doran - Agnes Obel
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WWYUnXlnvYo
Super relaxing. I haven't even taken the time to find out everything she's saying. I'm not even sure I wanna know.

Meshell Ndegeocello - Atomic Dog 2017
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5acMa2PxkjI
I love the way she flipped this. Now I have two Atomic Dog options... the banging original version and the chill 2017 version.

(Chill Groove)

Van Hunt - Hello, Goodbye (Live at WFUV)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1xw7QfEW9DU
The acoustic guitar here is so understated yet so funky. Lovely vocal performance as well. Always loved this song, but this is now my favorite version of it.

I like to drive to the oldies
Travel for work
= listening to a lot of oldies

I’ve worked my way through Motown, Stax, etc...
Venturing deeper into the Jazz Funk; Donald Byrd, Les McCann, etc...
I really get a kick out of finding samples
But these songs really stuck with me because they’re great songs
I’ve learned that traditional jazz doesn’t hold my interest as much as the electric bass
Gotta have that deep end, especially for the car.

13408872, It would take me a while to identify ten, but here's a few.
Posted by KiloMcG, Mon Oct-19-20 09:17 AM
Bill Withers - Lovely Day..... This puts me in a good mood in the mornings, especially when I look at my wife and kids. It just helps me remember what's really important and what to focus on. And my 4yo loves to play it on the way to preschool.

Stevie Wonder - Love's in Need of Love Today...... This kinda sums up how I feel about the world right now. And again, helps me focus on what I need to direct my energy towards. I try to do my best to focus on loving others and being a positive force in this fucked up, extremely negative world we are living in.

The rest would most likely be reggae heavy with lots of Bob. He's been my gospel the past few months. The Uprising and Survival albums in particular. But I also get in hip hop moods and other genres/groups like the Grateful Dead and Moonchild etc based on mood and vibe. Really diggin the new Black Thought.
13408882, I can't let summer go yet.

...so everything is a bit more uptempo than it probably should.

01. Aluna/Rema/Kaytranda - The Recipe (I really want Kay to produce a project for a female singer. Aluna, Tinashe or Teedra Moses would be awesome.)

02. Big Sean - The Baddest (I'm in Detroit, so flipping the Godzilla sample is important.)

03. Alicia Keys/Sampha - 3 Hour Drive (pretty much anything Sampha is involved in gets some spin from me, but Keys sounds good here too.)

04. Armani Ceaser/Benny The Butcher - Drill A Rama (The song is super basic....but it gives me 2005 Big Mike mixtape vibes and I'm all about that.)

05. Sylvan Esso - Ferris Wheel (I miss being around people and having fun.)

06. MachineDrum - Ur2Yung (Instrumental horn barrage, the last minute of this song is GREAT imo)

07. Cleo Sol - Shine (One off from the SAULT singer, early morning, everything gonna be okay music.)

08. Busta Rhymes/Anderson .Paak - YUUUU (I'm expecting better on Busta's album, but this song sounded better when I spun it the second time...now it's in regular rotation)

09. Musica Per Commenti Sonori - ABBANDONO (I have a subscription to Rappcats, so I get all these songs I know nothing about. This is some brazilian Jazz from 1974). I'm gonna link it up so someone reading this might hit for them like it does for me.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ljKVUliL3lU

10. Beck - See Through (Beck & Pharrell is a powerful combo. I would love to hear them do another project together...but I don't think I'll get that.)

13408883, I need to set up some type of Sampha alert
Posted by CherNic, Mon Oct-19-20 10:56 AM
I'll need to relisten at another time when I'm less emo...this song shows me that Alicia still has SOMETHING

Agreed with Kaytranada. I think the first track I heard of his was either a Teedra or Janet Jackson remix

you know I keep a playlist of new music that gets updated every Monday. Usually 20-30 new songs each time.

It's a mix of new music from big releases and artists you probably never heard of. I do this thing for real.
