13406803, NYT's The Daily did a good job explaining the initial downplay

Trump has long been a believer in the old '80s business guy / pseudo-buddhist concept of "positive thinking", and thus had his personal physician sworn to a public position that if he was honest about the threat of the virus on his life, it would manifest negatively, but if he were optimistic about its outcome, the outcome would be positive.

So this guy bobs and weaves around questions about if and when Trump was on oxygen or is having a mild reaction because, regardless of whether he was or wasn't, at the time of questioning he wasn't and that should mean he never will be again.

Additionally, that means feeling better and leaving the hospital means there'll never be a need to go back because the worst of it is over - the worst of it might not have even happened if everyone hadn't been so damn worried that it likely would!
