13404778, Of Montreal - She’s a Rejecter Posted by legsdiamond, Thu Sep-24-20 08:21 AM
Not sure how I found this group but that song is just ridiculous.
Not sure who it’s about but damn...
There's the girl that left me bitter Want to pay some other girl To just walk up to her and hit her But I can't, I can't, I can't, I can't, I can't

13404794, I would have never pegged you (or anyone) as an of Montreal fan Posted by MEAT, Thu Sep-24-20 09:31 AM
Definitely not from that album time period.
|
13404835, I think okps old front page is part of the reason for that Posted by upUPNorth, Thu Sep-24-20 12:09 PM
for me at least, I vaguely remember this link to a top albums of some time period that had placed Connected and Madvilliany close to the top, that had Franz Ferdinand debut, Arcade Fire's first, that Of Montreal album, and Modest Mouse's Good News above them, and it was kinda the reason I gave them all and chance and checked them out. Was pretty much when I started broadening my tastes lol.

13404861, 2008 for me. I had a bad breakup and was staying with a friend out of Posted by MEAT, Thu Sep-24-20 01:18 PM
state. Her roommate was like check out this new of Montreal ... and I was like ... who And man, Skeletal Lamping ran my LIFE for a while I decided that week that I was going to listen to new music, eat new foods, and just do new shit.
Like a woman that cuts her hair in a movie and that denotes a transition ... that was me with OM ... and I'm glad it was that album because there stuff since ... meh.

13404877, College and growing up in the burbs in the 80’s Posted by legsdiamond, Thu Sep-24-20 01:44 PM
When I heard Duran Duran, The Police and Ah-ha I was like hold up.. you mean there’s more than Stevie, EWF, Prince, MJ and Luther??
Part of the reason my wife and I hit it off is because we were both big Bjork, Prince, Goodie Mob, Radiohead fans.

13404874, I take great pride in my musical taste Posted by legsdiamond, Thu Sep-24-20 01:37 PM
I was in Kentucky in 2007 and didn’t have shit else to do besides dig for music. I believe it’s the We Were Mutants song that grabbed me and I copped based off of it.
I think it was NPR or some station that played it.
In college my roommate and I used to have some serious competition for finding next shit.
|
13404876, I started seeing them in shows shortly after and what a weed experience Posted by MEAT, Thu Sep-24-20 01:44 PM
Man o man.

13405011, Here's a playlist I put together mostly of obscure Black artists Posted by MEAT, Fri Sep-25-20 09:05 AM
https://open.spotify.com/playlist/72c2EvNezPxNl7OkURKZpW?si=OcvJgS41RW-vDeSW0A-zeQ
Admittedly not all songs are gems. But the goal was more that I was tired of hearing emotions coming from white people and figured I could dig for Black artists.

I don’t know quite a few of these acts. Thanks for sharing this playlist! Good stuff here!
Classic Bad Brains is always a good pick.

13405238, RE: Of Montreal - She’s a Rejecter Posted by Nodima, Sun Sep-27-20 12:06 PM
> >Not sure who it’s about but damn...
It was a concept album based on a disastrous trip through Europe with his wife that nearly resulted in getting a divorce and led to him getting on antidepressants and becoming a more gender fluid, Prince-obsessed weirdo (in a good way). A lot of the women he references on that album are actually references to him repressing his feminine side and struggling to come to terms with being a man and a husband.
The trajectory of of Montreal is fucking nuts considering they started out as the most twee and folky of the twee and folky Athens, GA scene that also put out Neutral Milk Hotel, Apples in Stereo, Elf Power and whatnot.

13404863, Not a diss song but Kathleen Jenkins was slut shamed Posted by micMajestic, Thu Sep-24-20 01:22 PM
Two different men alleged she engaged in the same carnal ritual with them on different versions of the same song. One of those men was a dwarf so I'm sure that escalated the level of public stigma she faced.

EPMD started it off and did a few of them, but Tha Alkaholiks did a Jane song "Mary Jane", so did The Cella Dwellas (but that one got shelved before the album dropped, lank: https://mega.nz/file/m6ZSRJ4b#OT4a_pGGoAANe42-jUPUyrtZx9lK3T4B5jFw-ua29ts ).

13405033, One of those dudes that rapped w/ Mobb Deep or CNN... Posted by flipnile, Fri Sep-25-20 11:26 AM
...wasn't a diss song, but dude took time out to say "fuck you" to the female CO at the prison he was at, and how "he's home now, you cant do nothing to me b****" Wans't even bars, dude was talking all this at the end of the song.
Always wondered what went down to make dude put that on a song.
|
13405200, Too Short went OFF on dude on World is Filled with Pimps and Hoes Posted by soulfunk, Sat Sep-26-20 11:34 AM
I mean he went all the way IN. “You just a rest haven for hoes”
And the hardest diss on the song was calling dude a nerd. You felt every piece of the disdain in his voice when he said NERD.
“Bitch only fuckin' with you cause you had a good ass job, NERD”
|
13405224, He really DID sound like he was talking to some specific person Posted by Adwhizz, Sat Sep-26-20 08:36 PM
Like he mailed the CD DIRECTLY to that Dude's house once it got pressed up
And my thing is... If you're the one fucking his girl why is SHORT the one sounding so pissed off

13405240, Phoebe Bridgers ICU - "I hate your mom/I hate it when she opens her mouth" Posted by Nodima, Sun Sep-27-20 12:25 PM
In a song that's already about how she's getting disinterested in her current relationship this line just comes out of nowhere like a Tyson uppercut aimed at somebody totally on the periphery, it's hilarious

13405242, Fleece - Love Song for the Haters is a fun one Posted by Nodima, Sun Sep-27-20 12:46 PM
It HAS to be about one very specific person who I could imagine hearing this song and kind of liking it.
"I put your picture on the wall So I could see you so small"
"Something about today Makes me feel okay
That you're gone, gone, gone, gone, gone Gone, gone, gone, gone, gone Gone, gone, gone, gone, gone Gone, gone, gone, gone, gone"

You can't tell me he's not talking about a specific person. And that person must have felt like a bum after hearing his verse.
