13402597, I like the Big Sean quite a bit.
Posted by PROMO, Fri Sep-04-20 03:08 PM
Now, full disclosure, I'm a Big Sean fan, so I figured I'd like it in general.

But specifically, the songs and the beats are WAY WAY better than his last album.

and even at an hour and 15 mins (which is crazy long for an album in 2020) it didn't FEEL long and i didn't get ear fatigue.
13402624, its was okay
Posted by mista k5, Fri Sep-04-20 05:28 PM
i havent heard much from him but have not been impressed.

this had some pretty good production. some nice features. kind of feel he wasted dwele but used paak well.

its a good commercial rap album just not my vibe.
13404104, Ty Farris x Royalz - The Road Of A Warrior
Posted by mista k5, Fri Sep-18-20 03:54 PM
missed this one, released 9/1.

its pretty great. dude kind of has a similar voice as skyzoo. not really the same flow or content. nice detroit sound to the beats. definitely worth checking out.
13402536, Old album alert. Check out Suff Daddy's LP from Feb.
Posted by PROMO, Fri Sep-04-20 09:47 AM
it's called Pompette. it's really a bit of everything: electro, soul, r&b, instrumental, hip hop.

never heard of dude before but apparently he works with Apollo Brown (who helped delived that incredible Che Noir LP this year).
13402537, thats a pretty bad name
Posted by mista k5, Fri Sep-04-20 09:51 AM
the picture does not help, lol.

the connection with apollo brown might be enough to check it out though. looks like he released something in june too, Misery Funk
13402538, i'm just here reporting the news, lol.

13402561, it's fire.

13402562, new Deaton Chris Anthony single is fucking great.
Posted by PROMO, Fri Sep-04-20 11:53 AM
if you never heard of him, peep his 2019 LP which was one of favorite albums of last year.
13402613, Machindrum dropped a FIRE 4 song EP called Star/Believe In U
Posted by PROMO, Fri Sep-04-20 04:36 PM
it features a fire alt-R&B song feat. Tanerell (get hip).

it features a SLAPPING Freddie Gibbs song called "Kane Train" that you prolly never heard unless you follow my playlists

it features a crazy flip/chop instrumental of the Jackson Sisters "I Believe In Miracles"

and the last song is in that same vein (can't quite pick out the sample).

this is what you call murking a project.

Posted by kajsidog, Mon Sep-14-20 07:07 PM
His last couple albums have been great. He shouldn't be aging as well as he has. I'd nearly written him off after High End of Low. (2009)
13404025, Reks - T.H.I.N.G.S.
Posted by mista k5, Fri Sep-18-20 10:45 AM
missed this last week. it was pretty good. at times it kind of sounds too much like mid 2000's underground but still worth a listen. gets some dope production from evidence, apollo brown, marco polo and others.

armani was eh. about the same production as the rest of griselda and didnt find her very engaging.

me eiht was okay. 20 tracks? not really missing much if you skip it.

curren$y is pretty good. some pretty nice beats. same old curren$y for better or worse.

the new sault was pretty good. definitely worth listening to. im kind of amazed at the content. theyre coming with it.

13404603, If you haven't yet, PLEASE go peep 9th's artist GQ's new project.
Posted by PROMO, Wed Sep-23-20 11:41 AM
It's called A Midsummer's Nightmare.

Utter fire. Reminds me A LOT of EARLY Little Brother despite being a solo MC.

9th SNAPPED on the transition from Ms. Out to Might As Well (which is the best Dreams of F***in An R&B Chick since the original). FFS 9th flipped the sample.

Not sure when the last time I said this, but this project should be LONGER.
13404637, been in heavy rotation. so dope!
Posted by wrecknoble, Wed Sep-23-20 12:58 PM
13404655, That’s former UNC Tar Heel guard, Quentin Thomas
Posted by DJR, Wed Sep-23-20 01:25 PM
Not sure if that’s common knowledge or not.

Heard a single a few weeks ago that I liked. Glad there’s an album out! Will check this out soon.
13404657, i heard him say he had a UNC degree in one of his bars...
Posted by PROMO, Wed Sep-23-20 01:27 PM
but had no clue of the bball angle.

good for him. love this project.
13404669, Yeah he played there in the early Roy Williams years
Posted by DJR, Wed Sep-23-20 01:45 PM
Those Felton/May/McCants to Tyler Hansbrough teams.
13404676, QT was equally frustrating and fun
Posted by BrooklynWHAT, Wed Sep-23-20 02:02 PM
he never really panned out because his handle was loose and his vision was a little ambitious but he could tide us over when Lawson was out and he was good for a sick highlight every game

most importantly, unlike his clown ass successor Larry Drew II, he understood his role and embraced it. QT is beloved amongst the Tar Heel faithful.
13405057, I remember liking him
Posted by DJR, Fri Sep-25-20 01:44 PM
Lived in Greensboro as a kid for a couple years in the Stackhouse era, and I still somewhat followed UNC in the 00s. I didn’t remember the details, but remember viewing him as a fun and likable player.
13405017, this production is so good
Posted by mista k5, Fri Sep-25-20 09:55 AM
dudes flow is mostly like dave east which im not a fan of. he did start sounding different in the later tracks. this is definitely worth listening to and i would be down for a full project.

good looking out.
13405056, Yeah, this is all 9th right?
Posted by DJR, Fri Sep-25-20 01:41 PM
Would be cool if Jamla could get another rapper to pop, other than Rapsody. I’m liking this project on first listen.
13405072, not sure if ALL 9th, but most.

13405081, i was looking for credits but couldnt find them
Posted by mista k5, Fri Sep-25-20 03:51 PM
best i could find was the album was produced by 9th wonder but i know that doesnt always mean he actually produced each song.

looks like thought got pushed back to next friday. still a lot to go through. gonna start with this potatohead people single featuring pos from de la soul https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FRpOSylR3HI&ab_channel=PotatoheadPeople-Topic.

definitely want to listen to the elzhi, gonna check out ferg, bronson, deftones, idles, public enemy, spillage village, 2chainz. maybe the paris. if nappy roots and arrested development actually dropped might check those out too. i have seen hiphopdx list many albums that were listed elsewhere recently so kind of surprised by these.

might be his best album. very cohesive without sounding repetitive. only complaint would be the skits/jokes. theyre not bad enough to bring down the album but they really are not needed. maybe the one after ferndale is needed, the album did need a break at that point but would have been nice if it was a stand alone skit instead of tied to the track. its short enough that its not a big deal.

these beats are dope. elzhi is sharp as always. the first track had him using a different flow/voice. that was interesting. rest of the tracks were standard elzhi, which is great. nice hooks, sometimes his tracks are brought down by hooks but not in this case. even JASON sounds better as a closer.

AOTY contender for me for sure.

Finale’s Pipe Dream and a Promise from 2009 has a two minute skit from a different 80s legend every three songs or so and just about all of them, well intentioned as they are, are ultimately pointless.
