Tyler Perry is officially a member of the Three Comma Club.

According to Forbes, the actor and entrepreneur is now worth a billion dollars. The publication arrived at the conclusion by breaking down Perry’s assets, including $300 million in cash and investments, a content library worth $320 million, his sprawling Atlanta studio and multiple personal properties. The mogul joins a group of Black billionaires that includes Robert F. Smith, Michael Jordan, Oprah Winfrey, David Stewart, Jay-Z and perhaps Kanye West.
13402288, wow! congrats to him

13402316, One day this will not be cause for celebration nm

13402335, Why not?
Posted by PimpTrickGangstaClik, Wed Sep-02-20 04:35 PM
Yes, it's an obscene amount of money.
But are his accomplishments that got him to that point not worth of celebration?
13402447, No one becomes a billionaire through their own accomplishments

There is so much exploitation that leads to the accumulation of that kind of wealth. He's also strongly anti-union and has been accused of treating workers poorly. I'm good on him and all billionaires.
13402317, Thats 2x Byron Allen +

4 Spike Lee's.

Serious question - NO SNARK or SHADE meant:
What has he done that's good? I'll watch it if there's something really good.
13402367, No shade but aren’t you white?
Posted by legsdiamond, Wed Sep-02-20 07:33 PM
You aren’t his audience.

It’s not about the quality of his work, for me it’s the quantity and the amount of jobs he’s given to Black actors that’s amazing.

I used to be a huge critic but I get it now. His speech on Black AF was awesome.

13402376, Hmm....
Posted by handle, Wed Sep-02-20 08:27 PM
I was asking about his work. You seemed to reply about his business.

So I'll repeat: What does he have that's GOOD? I'd like to watch it.

Or is all not really good??

But it's that he also does good things with the money and influence he's gained? (That's okay in my book too.)
13402381, this is handle doing his schtick

Diary of a Mad Black Woman wasn't bad either. Or the one with Alfre Woodard and ole girl from Misery....Kathy Bates. I can't think of the name of it.

I don't consider myself his *target* market (young, Black woman...maybe I am lol). Never been to one of the plays, and I ignore most of the Madea stuff but his personal story should be applauded and he keeps a lot of people working. The content might suck, but I cannot knock how many folks he employs, his studio here in Atlanta (in a very Black neighborhood), or his charitable work.
13402331, I'm genuinely curious how the anti-billionaire folks feel about this

13402340, we live in the world we live in

if we have billionaires then its a good thing that more of them are POC than not.

i dont really know much about tyler perry besides knowing he makes a ton of popular movies. never seen one of them.

big accomplishment and has plenty of meaning that should be celebrated.

i would prefer if more people werent scraping at the bottom just to live but i wouldnt start my complaint with tyler perry being a billionaire. im a bit surprised he wasnt one yet.

thats just my opinion, i dont know how other anti-billionaires feel about it lol

13402349, A testament to the prowess of his cinematic swindle
Posted by Fire1986, Wed Sep-02-20 05:32 PM
He offers chitlins and other poisons and we go a-buckin-and-a-hollerin about how the great big doors done opened up fuh blacks.
13402371, are you infantilizing black people?
Posted by double negative, Wed Sep-02-20 07:56 PM
how is it a swindle?

I dont think he makes good work

but it resonates with people enough to make people want to exchange their dollars to be entertained by his products

he started on the (fuck i hate this term) chitlin' circuit where he grew his base from the bottom

so...where is the swindle?

I don't like his output but I totally get why/how people fuck with him.

That’s the swindle.

He’s filched his riches by infantilizing the artistic tastes of woebegone COGIC congregations and their family members across the nation.

13402405, It seems like he played the capitalism game well - but I see your POV

13402375, no such thing as an ethical billionaire. even the black ones.
Posted by Brotha Sun, Wed Sep-02-20 08:23 PM
That being said as long as we have adam sandlers and judd apatows saturating entertainment with their meh movies and meh friends, i dont have energy to clown tyler perry and his work no matter how regressive i find it.

13402384, why would it be any different than how we feel about other billionaires?
Posted by Hitokiri, Thu Sep-03-20 12:48 AM
they shouldn't exist. period.
13402417, word.
Posted by Damali, Thu Sep-03-20 12:23 PM
13402350, I don't care but I have grown to resent how mass media
Posted by Musa, Wed Sep-02-20 05:33 PM
pocket watches Black folk.

13402383, BET reporting on Tyler Perry is mass media pocket watching?
Posted by Bambino Grande, Thu Sep-03-20 12:35 AM
13402352, hard work paying off.
Posted by Reeq, Wed Sep-02-20 05:48 PM
i dont think ive ever watched a tyler perry movie from start to finish. but i gotta salute that black man for seeing his vision through.
13402368, Acrimony was entertaining.
Posted by legsdiamond, Wed Sep-02-20 07:38 PM
Like I told Handle... if you watched Black AF he put it all out there.

“I don’t give a fuck about white acceptance, I make movies for my audience”

he knows who his audience is and he gives them exactly what they want.
13402397, Major respect due
Posted by Amritsar, Thu Sep-03-20 09:41 AM
i'm not the biggest fan of his work, but his monologue on Black AF really opened my eyes

Also how long before the cosplayers want to eat him and his money lol

because a billionaire = a billion dollars cash that you can tax!
13402402, Good 4 him. "hate, then let them hate, and watch the money pile up" @50

No results. He must be good then.

Congratulations to him for having so much money!
