Cardi seems to be STRUGGLING to find a hit.

I mean, she prolly got more money than she'll ever need and she's such a cultural figure at this point she can always get money somehow.

But her music been kinda rough since her album.

13398014, budden pod said she just finished her new deal and that was the holdup
Posted by BrooklynWHAT, Fri Aug-07-20 12:02 PM
since Money and Please Me ran its course last year
13398016, yeah, i heard that.
Posted by PROMO, Fri Aug-07-20 12:05 PM
i mean, i liked Please Me a lot but i don't think the song did that well if it was to be measured on a "Cardi-level."

i'll be curious to see how this song does. Meg is super hot right now so if it does well i think a lot of credit will go to her.

FWIW, i consider myself a BIG Cardi fan and i don't like this song at all (except for where Meg comes in spittin).
13398020, EVERYONE HAS BEEN STRUGGLING
Posted by double 0, Fri Aug-07-20 12:22 PM
When was the last Real HIT?

Roddy "The Box"? And that was before the pandemic and protests...

The world has fundamentally changed and I don't think people are even sure what they want... especially since the "club" ain't really open.

Will be interesting to see what anyone does after all this.
13398024, valid points. hadn't even really thought of that.
Posted by PROMO, Fri Aug-07-20 12:41 PM
which maybe explains why there's a bunch of songs that have come out that i'm like "how is this not the most poppin' song right now?"

i honestly hadn't thought of it. i mean, i've thought of the pandemic and music more on a financial level. i was just kind of thinking "well, everyone is at home w/ nothing to do they are probably just listening to tons of music" not even thinking of the impact of hearing music in live spaces even if it's at a bar not even a "dance club."

13398059, Some odd reason, I found it empowering
Posted by Mori, Fri Aug-07-20 02:36 PM
Even though I don't like that all new black female artists are interchangeable with prostitutes or strippers, I do like that these women are talking about ensuring that their pleasure comes first. Pun intended.

I like that the women are promoting financial independence and exchange. I don't like that for many black women and girls, this will be an image to aspire to.

I know that i don't need to look like this to get a man, but I still think many black women are sold that being overly sexual is the only way to be desired.

The song was a little boring and I HATE Cardi B's rap cadence. I think Meg is so beautifully brown and her lyrics were tolerable.

The beat was too repetitive.

Will there be any black female artists who don't have to be naked to be successful?
13398087, i'm waiting on it
Posted by BrooklynWHAT, Fri Aug-07-20 03:58 PM

>
>Will there be any black female artists who don't have to be
>naked to be successful?
>

i had a good convo w/ my friends about the fact that i cannot wait for this thot rap era to be over with. i find Cardi endlessly entertaining overall, and i think Megan is gorgeous (you can tell this isn't her, but she's good at playing the role), but once we get to the 2nd/3rd tier acts i feel like im at the stripclub which does have its purpose. but nobody wants to be at the stripclub at 2pm on a Tuesday.

one of my boys (he actually works in the country music industry) LOVES the idea of thot rap even if he doesnt like the music because male thot rap is eternal, and we'd never say we were tired of it, and just expect women to put up with it.

my thing tho, is for all the criticisms of male rap content, the top 3 artist of our era are Drake (you can call it male thot rap i won't argue), then Kendrick and Cole who are considered to be "conscious" in a sense.

i don't even see a pathway for a female rapper to come by and be that sort of figure for women. i think the demand has to be there from women. it can't be somebody that guys are into first and foremost.
13398096, its just the way of the world now.
Posted by Reeq, Fri Aug-07-20 04:12 PM
i forgot the name of that lil white chick who used to do white guitar covers of hip hop and r&b on youtube. then she got signed...got some ass shots...started bussin it open on ig and doing songs with migos lol.

that danileigh chick started out with a laidback tomboy baggy pants dancer r&b vibe. then she got some ass shots...started making trap/drill music...and like every other pic/vid she posts on ig is in a thong or bikini.

saweetie done upgraded her whole body with aftermarket parts and shows it off as much as possible.

jorja smith done started straying in that direction (tho not as bad).

even sza posting thirst traps now.
13398200, Does the general public know Rapsody?
Posted by DJR, Sat Aug-08-20 10:27 PM
She won a Grammy, I think. Do people know her? I feel like there’s only like 10 rappers that get mainstream attention, so I have no idea how well known the rest of the “successful” artists are.
13398436, not really. i'd bet her fanbase is 95% men as well
Posted by BrooklynWHAT, Tue Aug-11-20 09:56 AM
which is another reason i say it can't be somebody that men are primarily into. women take it as patriarchal.
13398707, Rapsody didn’t get the grammy...

I know some of these images are created but I'd be lying if I said I didn't believe her persona.
13398092, Interesting:
Posted by lightworks, Fri Aug-07-20 04:04 PM
>I HATE Cardi B's rap cadence.

Funny you say that since I have always hated her cadence since to me it always sounds like she's just learning the rap lyrics and don't quite them down yet so she's always a little behind the beat.

Also always hated Megan's since it feels like she has the same one on everything song lo.

13398448, Can someone please tell me what’s liberating or empowering
Posted by legsdiamond, Tue Aug-11-20 10:23 AM
when it comes to this video?

or is this just trashy entertainment?

13398548, its not the content specifically.
Posted by tariqhu, Tue Aug-11-20 02:04 PM
its the freedom to do whatever content they want.

empowering because dudes have always had that freedom. women are immediately attached for being less than a 'lady'. you see it in this post.
13398562, All that freedom and they do another tits and azz video
Posted by legsdiamond, Tue Aug-11-20 02:27 PM
Maybe this is freedom but it looks like the same video treatment we’ve seen for the last 20 years.

13398625, there's a diff in doing it because someone else said to
Posted by tariqhu, Tue Aug-11-20 03:41 PM
and doing it for your own satisfaction. sure T&A aint new, but freedom of choice is something for them to relish. and they should.

that's what freedom looks like. doesn't mean their choices will be liked by everyone, but titties shouldn't be offensive anyway.

13398628, Titties ain’t offensive. I love them
Posted by legsdiamond, Tue Aug-11-20 03:44 PM
but it doesn’t move me to see another video with them in it..

13398651, and that's fine.
Posted by tariqhu, Tue Aug-11-20 03:56 PM
I'm not really a vid person at all anymore. but enjoyed this one.

I mainly listening for the rhyme skills. they nasty af, but that doesn't bother me. everybody aint gonna be Rapsody.

the issue isn't what they say and what they show. its more that nobody cares when da baby or any other male rapper ever, has ass and titties in his vids. nobody cares when a dude is shirtless in a vid. its still comes down to women's choices being policed.
13398849, I don’t buy that no one cares when men show women doing this
Posted by legsdiamond, Wed Aug-12-20 10:41 AM
The main argument is “more misogyny, why are they always sexualizing women, we are more than pieces of meat”

then we see a video like this and people praise it as empowering?

That’s just.. lmao.

13398713, LOL
Posted by Anonymous, Tue Aug-11-20 05:13 PM

13398564, Choosing to show your T&A instead of being told to show it
Posted by legsdiamond, Tue Aug-11-20 02:31 PM
is empowerment?

I guess that makes it better but it still seems lazy.

When men were in charge: show me your titties
Now women are in charge: Imma show my titties

I’m old.. I haven’t even listened to the lyrics cause as soon as I seen the titty statue fountain and door knobs I was good on that.

13398633, lmao
Posted by Lurkmode, Tue Aug-11-20 03:46 PM
It's the new empowerment, a throw back to Little Kim at the VMA's

Yeah I didn't know any of the lyrics until I read this thread.
13398710, i mean, isn't it just doing whatever they want?

13398862, i get your point. there is a real irony in all of it.
Posted by PROMO, Wed Aug-12-20 11:05 AM
but, i'm also not a slut-shame type so if being as sexual as the men get to be makes you feel powerful and in control then, hey, party on.

Posted by legsdiamond, Fri Aug-14-20 11:04 AM
which is a serious remix.

When Luke and all them were popping people complained about it.

So not sure why this is being discussed like everyone was on board with BET after dark and sex videos.

This isn’t hypocrisy, it’s consistency if we want to be real about it.
13399484, truth. but one piece of nuance i suppose we should point out here...
Posted by PROMO, Fri Aug-14-20 05:11 PM
when the men did it, the backlash wasn't just against the pure raunchiness like it seems to be here.

a big part of the backlash was the misogyny.

Posted by atruhead, Tue Aug-11-20 06:41 PM
they made a video for the male gaze, but it's the autonomy that men cant stand, and negatively critiquing whatever they did stems from a place of entitlement* ("my opinion on women shit needs to be heard")

I dont like the song*, I cut off the video halfway through. my only real issue is the message it sends to impressionable people who cant distinguish entertainment from real life (treating women as strictly sexual objects is okay or it's okay for a woman to bring nothing to the table other than sex)

but that's a problem that exists separate from WAP

*in advance, dont be stupid and reach to find hypocrisy that isnt there. "I dont like this musically" is not the same as "what's the point of this, it isnt empowering"

Posted by EAS, Wed Aug-12-20 10:24 AM
What did Cardi say on the Netflix competition show 'Rhythm and Flow'..."How will the white man sell you?" I think about that when I watch this video. How do white men see women of color around the globe? What is that history? Are they seen as equals or objectified? Yes Black men need to do better too but they don't own or run shit.
It is great to see women enjoying and owning their sexuality but is that what's really going on here? To have a voice and a huge platform and using it to bus' it wide open is empowering? Black and Latino women have always been seen as 'loose', amoral, and sexual. Who do you think 'baby momma' is code for? White women? You think this video helps the narrative or hurts it?
Back in the day, for every Salt'N Pepa there was a Yo-yo, M.C. Lyte, Monie Love, etc. to share the main stage.
Now that Cardi, Megan, etc. is the face of female rap and sells major, where are the balancing selling acts? Rhapsody? Noname? Tierra Whack? None of them is competing and can run with the Cardi's or the Megan's. I think that is what some may have issue with. We say to ourselves that this is 'empowering' but deep down we know it is really not. We just say that to pretend not to be the old backpacker in the room or the misogynist.
Female acts being pigeon holed to sell sex is not 'empowerment', it is maintaining the status quo.
White people eat this up because it continues the narrative they already have of us. And who buys most rap products? Who is making Cardi number one?
But it's just entertainment right? So let's all just sit back and enjoy.
13398847, They want is to believe this is empowering to Black women
Posted by legsdiamond, Wed Aug-12-20 10:38 AM

13398992, "my issue with this is..." is not "Im worried"

>well, one of my worries is impressionable teens who think
>this is empowering

teenagers dont have an understanding of empowerment
teenagers have parents who can discuss these things with them

you're masking your discomfort with overtly sexual women by going "what about teenagers?"

my statement on impressionable people was 100% about adults

none of it changes what adult women are allowed to feel empowered by. Cardi B and Meg werent Tip Drill dancers being lusted after, they're the stars
13399082, and yet, you turned it off half way through

and had concerns about the message.

it’s okay to not like something popular because you don’t like the song, message or both and it doesn’t mean it’s because women being sexual makes you uncomfortable

I wasn’t a fan of it, didn’t like the beat, flow and the visuals looked cheesy as hell...

13399385, your whole tone in this post is discomfort with them being sexy

13399482, says the guy who cut the video off half way thru it
Posted by legsdiamond, Fri Aug-14-20 04:49 PM
you were concerned about impressionable people but comfortable with their sexy?

Lmao.. see how silly that sounds?

I didn’t even see the video past the intro. Nothing to do with their looks.

13398893, As a white hip hop fan, i hope you understand cultural context matters

None of the music we consume exists in a vacuum.

While you find the way rappers rapped to be technically great and the music very pleasing, you dont feel the weight of the lyrics when black people are affirming themselves on wax.

Your understanding and enjoyment of black music will always have a ceiling.

The same applies for music that is made by women, black women at that.

Theres a context that will always be over your head no matter how much you love (or hate) the song.

The black men rapping about drugs and murder were also being pushed by labels to fit an agenda, and they were also being exploited, but the context of seeing them speak their truth with their chest on a large platform was impactful for other black people. These two truths can coexist.

Mainstream music is inherently exploitative propoganda, especially rap, has been for 30+ years. The fact two women rapping about sex is where you decide to be angry about it is telling.

Since theyre so cliche.

Im listening. Lets not be petulant.

13398922, A lot of former backpackers were “angry” at main stream music
Posted by legsdiamond, Wed Aug-12-20 12:32 PM
Seems a bit silly to act like this is the first time anyone has been “angry” at a song/video

Most people on here hate Drakes music just cause.. lol.

but who needs facts when we can act like this is the first time a mainstream song/video has been ripped for being a hot mess.

13398924, I didn’t even know I was angry
Posted by Anonymous, Wed Aug-12-20 12:33 PM
Shit, I’m glad someone told me.

13398940, is it a hot mess, or are you just uncomfortable? its pretty standard

13398964, Why would you ask me if what I said is what I meant?
Posted by legsdiamond, Wed Aug-12-20 01:00 PM
I’m just laughing at y’all trying to sell the “empowerment” angle.

For years everyone has said they didn’t want to see our women treated as sexual objects.. yet, here we are.

2020
Pandemic
BLM rallies
Defund the Police..

and this is empowering to watch?

Okay.

13398985, You cant decide how art makes someone else feels.
Posted by Brotha Sun, Wed Aug-12-20 01:37 PM
Art doesnt have to be explicitly political to be impactful.

you should investigate what about this makes you uncomfortable.
13399079, Just because I don’t rock with it doesn’t mean it makes me
Posted by legsdiamond, Wed Aug-12-20 03:29 PM
uncomfortable.

I’m asking why being sexual is considered empowering when it’s the oldest trick in the book.

I’m an old head.. been seeing our women specialized for damn near 30 years in this industry and once women get so called control over their image and message they do the same thing.

Maybe that’s empowering to y’all but its the record industry and they aren’t in some indie label. It’s the same shit.

And can't be shamed for having an opinion.

>The black men rapping about drugs and murder were also being
>pushed by labels to fit an agenda, and they were also being
>exploited, but the context of seeing them speak their truth
>with their chest on a large platform was impactful for other
>black people. These two truths can coexist.

I think you missed where I typed this:

Yes Black men need to do better too but they don't own or run shit.

>Mainstream music is inherently exploitative propoganda,
>especially rap, has been for 30+ years. The fact two women
>rapping about sex is where you decide to be angry about it is
>telling.

And I also think you missed where I typed this:

Back in the day, for every Salt'N Pepa there was a Yo-yo, M.C. Lyte, Monie Love, etc. to share the main stage.
Now that Cardi, Megan, etc. is the face of female rap and sells major, where are the balancing selling acts? Rhapsody? Noname? Tierra Whack? None of them is competing and can run with the Cardi's or the Megan's.

No one is angry. Just observing what's happening and stating opinion. Why is it when you get called out, the other person has to be ANGRY? GRRRRRRRR!!! tfoh

I am just asking where is the balance?

If the original post was about the latest male rapper video, I would have criticism as well....but this post isn't about that now is it? So why would I bring it up? That wouldn't be staying on topic.
But since we are now speaking on males, let's talk about it. Logic isn't murdering or pushing drugs the whole album. He is a platinum rapper. Chance dropped a whole album about being married. He is also a platinum rapper. And where did I mention that I listen to what's poppin' now?

I am from the era of Public Enemy, B.D.P., Jungle Brothers, X-Clan.....so what you sayin'? And during that same era was Ice-T, Too Short, N.W.A. and 2 Live Crew. Which brings it back home to my original point

B-A-L-A-N-C-E

or lack thereof.

Cardi and Megan are thrust in our face but I have to seek out Tierra, Noname? Those who cannot compete in the sexual imagery selling market.
I just would like to see both sides represented on the main stage. You know, see all sides and the diversity of women so I can celebrate it. You know.....'empowerment'.
13398899, everything after but is bullshit

13398958, I asked a couple of women what they thought of the video...
Posted by Marbles, Wed Aug-12-20 12:56 PM
They all said that they loved it. They said that men have been bragging about their dicks forever. They appreciate the chance for women to be able to talk filthy about having sex and how good they are.

I'm a middle aged man. But I'd be lying if I said that in my younger days, I wasn't bragging and talking shit about my sexual exploits. I don't think it's crazy to think that women enjoy doing the same thing, for the same reasons, without a man telling them how, when, where or why to do it.
