I have the perfect example of what you said above: Talib Kweli.

All the cyber-harassment and doxxing, among many other deplorable things he's done to Black women within the last month, didn't personally depress me like the way it's doing for me with The Roots. As of 2016 or so, Talib has not been my fave or someone I *checked* for like that ANYMORE.

Granted, I listened to the Black Star album RELIGIOUSLY for years and years, and learned a lot from it, felt validated. And also had Reflection Eternal and about 2 or 3 of his solo albums (that I listened to maybe twice and didn't care for) and some random songs here and there. It all just died down completely for me within the last few years because he just didn't interest me musically anymore and this was also the same time I heard about the situation with Res, in 2018. That was major thing that had me go, "oh no. I can't support this". And that was easy for me to do.

And when the time came and everything crashed on Twitter, even though all the evidence of his behavior is proof he's trash, I didn't view him like I do The Roots and Common, as guys who "were the noble ones". So when my friends were feeling bummed about Talib, or even R K*lly, or C*sby, I understood it, but couldn't relate in the same way they can't relate to what's happening now, with these guys.
