I hate to admit it and obviously it isn't based on facts and honestly it give me Horton-y vibes and I hope for our sake this doesn't take off with the Trump crowd but yeah:

AKA "If we defund the police then who's gonna stop all of the protestors who want to defund the police?"
13396179, I’ve seen 3 or 4 versions of this

One where an old lady is grabbed by a shadowy figure while she is on hold.

What crazy about this ad is all the people causing destruction are blonde and white.

That's the brilliant part. It shields them from accusations of racism but still conveys alot of the same messages.
13396186, Fear is the biggest motivator. Defund the policers gave Trump a lifeline
Posted by PimpTrickGangstaClik, Wed Jul-29-20 09:22 AM
He was on defense up to this point. And he had nothing to go on offense with. Immigration panic isn't going to play well this cycle. Any economic anxiety will be tied to him.

But then the slogan Defund the Police comes along and finally gives him some fear to latch on to.
He's losing ground with older folks and suburban women. Safety is one of their top concerns, and he's aiming these ads right at them.

Law and order is his only shot

I guess it's the protesters who gave trump the idea to run on THE EXACT THING THE REPUBLICAN PARTY HAS BEEN RUNNING ON FOR 40 YEARS

Trump ran on law and order in 2016 ("I am the law and order candidate").

I said Defund the Police gave a listless campaign something to grab onto.

horrible take after horrible take. Spend a little time reading replies 11, 15, 19, 20 in this thread.

Law and Order comes from Nixon, you can't separate racism from the past with racism to today and call it brilliant. That's what Trump's ad is racism, that's what the Willie Horton ad is racism. It's not hard to figure out, it's not clever, complex or brilliant. smh

I'm not sure if you're saying racism can't be clever, but I think it's at least arguable that it's either brilliant or its opposition is really dumb to allow ourselves to be stuck in gender wars 155 yrs after the end of slavery.
13396974, Not when it's done over and over and over

Maybe the first time you see it, someone can call it clever but when it's year 155, I call the person who thinks it's brilliant, confused or in denial. Someone would have to be new to the world or sheltered and isolated to call that ad brilliant.
13396989, Perhaps the brilliance is in the consistency

That's one view. At the same time, there are those who would say that the confused ones are those who think racism isn't clever. Either way tho, I'd like to suggest that attacking one another's level of intelligence based on whether or not racism is brilliant is far less important than showing some love and understanding to one another in the interest of combatting it.

13397004, I would call that repetitive not brilliant

Even if it's considered clever, that label doesn't work when it's done over and over. Love and understanding is good, but it's a two way street. When someone starts attacking they can expect the same will be returned.
13396333, This was my point in that other post. Though Trump is down now, the

election is still pretty far out, most people haven't focused on it or heard this rhetoric or these ads and I am not sure what's going to happen when they blitz us with these ads constantly leading up to election day. Let these cats talk its already in the bag.

Defund the Police gives Trump his best shot at holding onto power, so that alone makes it a slogan we can do without.

I don't see this playing out well for us at polls. Most people outside of big cities have no idea how to function without law enforcement. This is not exclusive to white people.

13396338, This is the latest flavor of an ad they run every election
Posted by cp900, Wed Jul-29-20 02:24 PM
The popular one in 2016 was someone running to get a gun off their dresser when they hear a noise in their home and it disappearing because Hillary came and took everyone's guns.

Same sh*t. Different toilet.

Democrats are soft on crime. They want to take your guns. They want to take your police. etc etc.
13396344, And some times it helps them win, and some times it doesn't.

And relative to all the other shady dealings they have going on, I think this particular flavor of ad makes little difference one way or the other.

It also puts into context that the idea that "defunding the police" is what drives this sort of thing is incorrect. Every election from now until the end of democracy, they will find some reason to make this same ad. If they can't find one, they will make one up.
13396465, one of the gifts of the trump era is that every one of his attacks
Posted by Reeq, Thu Jul-30-20 12:35 AM
is oversaturated and exhausted in a short period of time. because he hammers it so hard and so frequently that eventually the reality/reporting just falls behind the expectation and fails to reiterate it.

even the caravan and open borders stuff was losing a bit of steam by the time the midterms rolled around because people eventually realized the hysteria wasnt on par with how events were really playing out.

i think we sometimes confuse a good trump attack for the only one he has available to him.

i wish he didnt have a lifeline at all...but that doesnt necessarily mean that the current lifeline is really effective.

plus its getting drowned out by the pandemic and the economy...which are the 2 biggest issues on everyones mind. sinclair media is running hit pieces on fauci and his pandemic response...not the crime/police stuff. which tells you everything you need to know.

i mean...you know shit is bad when trump is criticizing fox news for their *lack* of attention to it.

13396467, btw the media deserves some credit here.
Posted by Reeq, Thu Jul-30-20 12:48 AM
i was kinda bothered by them focusing so much on the 'defund the police' slogan and the debate around it...because i thought it elevated a potentially harmful narrative that trump/repubs were sure to capitalize on.

but what they really did was open the floor to a ton of people/discussion early on who were effective at fleshing out the concept of police reform and diffusing a lot of the confusion around the literal slogan.
13396737, I have no idea how it all shakes out, but I know that the topic

suburban and college educated whites (who the trump campaign is trying to target with this and the desegregation rule cut)...still heavily favor biden on crime/safety.
https://twitter.com/ThePlumLineGS/status/1287762880318799874

and the fact that trumps troops are pulling out of portland and seattle reinforces that.

i think what this election is really showing is how hard is it for republicans to run against (and negatively define) another old white man.

its hard to find something that sticks when they dont have racism and sexism at their disposal.

all they really have right now is 'joe bidens america will look like donald trumps america' and 'joe biden isnt a socialist but the rest of his party is'.
