13390859, Help me decide on an M.2 SSD for my PC
Posted by handle, Fri Jun-26-20 10:15 AM
My 1TB SATA SSD is failing/becoming unreliable for some reason.

So I think it's time to get a 2TB - and I'm thinking an M.2 NVME is the only way to go.

My SATA SSD has read write of basically 540/500.

The top M.2 NVME SSD's can go UP TO 3000/3500 with my motherboard and cost around $260.

The mid ones go to 2000/1800 and cost $200.

I'm not video editing - or rendering files. I will only have 1 M.2 SSD so copying files from it will go to devices that at MAX are 500/500.

Question is:Do I *have* to drop the extra $50 for a top-tier one?
It seems like I'd never use the extra speed in ANY scenario.

13390887, The speed increase is real. Worth it if you can swing it.

Most notable for me when working in Adobe Lightroom and also when working in Revit. Autosave is so much faster and there's no noticeable "blip" when I happens. I'm dealing it fairly large files though.

13390936, You got any numbers for that?

I find it hard to believe for any recent generation SSD over another.
13391055, well I went from a 2012 gen SSD to a modern 2019 so I could def.

be an outlier in my impression.
But in general I'm just saying SSD is THE move if you're not using one currently. Not sure what version the 2019 15" MBP that I have has in it.......

13390924, if you're not video editing I really don't know what you need it for

13390937, I'm in this line

Going from 500MBs SATA to 1800MBs seem incredible.

Not sure what I'd gain going faster. I don't have 10GB networking, or a fast SAN and I don't do video editing, rendering, or maths.

now I see they have a new GEN that can do 5000MBs if you have the right motherboard.
13391006, yeah at some point you're more limited by everything else

13391003, Someone JUST recommended I get an SSD for my 2017 Macbook Pro
Posted by Bambino Grande, Sat Jun-27-20 04:45 AM

I'm strongly considering it, not sure if I'm technically savvy enough to pull it off myself tho

13391005, a fairly standard SSD at this point is a massive upgrade over a HDD

can't recommend it enough

13391008, That's so crazy, I mean my Macbook still works fine for music prod
Posted by Bambino Grande, Sat Jun-27-20 06:50 AM

But if its as simple as installing a new SSD card via a YouTube tutorial vid I'm mad no one has put me on to this sooner

Any suggestion for which SSD to get?
13391061, Didn't all 2017 models have SSDs?
Posted by handle, Sat Jun-27-20 01:12 PM
If your MacBook has an 3.5" HDD in it then any 3.5" SATA SSD will work.

I'd say just get the cheapest one - I've had San Disks, A-Datas and Muskins but all should work fine.

This Silicon Power one is good, and it's 1TB for $92.99:

You can get 512GB ones for around $50.

13391082, I’m sorry, I meant its a 2013 macbook pro

My bad!

1TB for $92 sounds like a good deal
13391159, Outside of memory an SSD is the best investment

My old Dell (like from 2007) was dying a slow death for a number of years but after putting an SSD in it, the computer was quick enough to use for another two years.

The difference is night and day. Startup times for the OS and apps drop dramatically. Plus the drives are relatively inexpensive now.

13391232, ^^^ if you can't afford a whole new computer
Posted by Rjcc, Mon Jun-29-20 03:16 PM
it's like buying a whole new computer for basically ~100 bucks

13391057, you should...but it's HARD DIY process...like..messy...but they have kits
Posted by FLUIDJ, Sat Jun-27-20 12:54 PM
It took me damn near 4+ hrs to upgrade the battery & drive on my old 2012 MBP /retina model. The battery was the hardest part.
You should check to make sure the SSD is even upgradable on the 2017 models though...I'm not sure if it is..

13391083, I heard it can be tricky
Posted by Bambino Grande, Sat Jun-27-20 11:37 PM

Its a MBP 2013 model, my friend did it himself on his and he too said the struggle was real. But he isn’t very tech savvy and still managed to do it with help from a YouTube vid
13391624, Adorama has 1TB NVMe 3.0 for $109.99

But I'm thinking that when I do upgrade I'll go for a Phison 12 NVMW with TLC chips - which is the "mid point" in performance.

Like:

Or:
https://www.amazon.com/XPG-SX8200-Gen3x4-3000MB-ASX8200PNP-2TT-C/dp/B07TY2TN64/ref=psdc_1292116011_t1_B07X74M6PT

I'm sure QLC would be fine - but TLC is pretty much the same cost.

Now, I really want a Samsung 970 pro - which is MLC.

One test I saw said "The 970 Pro maintains 2,700 MB/s sequential write performance for 1-hour, again setting a new lab record."

Now, I have no idea why I'd ever write that much data, but it's fun to look at :)
