13381395, Buying Ugly Cars
Posted by mista k5, Wed Apr-29-20 02:52 PM
have you ever bought a car even though it was straight up ugly? i dont mean a beater but just an ugly design.

if so, why? i always wonder this when i see some ugly cars on the road.

not to say that ive only bought great looking cars. pretty much all my cars have been boring.

now taste is subjective but i just don't know if i could get myself to buy any of these models. would rather get a different year or badge (gmc instead of chevy). sorry not sorry if you have or had any of these.

in some cases the years before the redesign looked good, so im not hating on the car as a whole just that specific design.

thing I have ever seent. Now I want one so badly.

13381401, thats the other thing, some cars need time
Posted by mista k5, Wed Apr-29-20 03:10 PM
there definitely have been cars that i thought were ugly at first but after a few years i liked.

el camino is weird, it was always kind of a joke but i dont know if i ever thought it was ugly. it was always confusing though.
13381404, i think you're being rough on the 2020 Accord (esp. if it's Sport).
Posted by PROMO, Wed Apr-29-20 03:14 PM
that pic is an odd angle.

here's another: https://images.app.goo.gl/SDzeLoLs22Wptu687
13381406, there are so many on the road
Posted by mista k5, Wed Apr-29-20 03:18 PM
ive seen all the angles. just looks like an unnecessary boat. i dont understand the ugly nose. why does it have an oversized nose piercing?

this MIGHT be one that in a few years i might like but idk it looks ugly to me. especially compared to previous accords. the current civic is nice though.
13381409, don't get me wrong, i ain't in here caping.
Posted by PROMO, Wed Apr-29-20 03:24 PM
it's not the most appealing design, i really liked the Accord Sport prior to this redesign (2017 i think, back to whenever that design started), but i don't think it's UGLY.

reminds of one of the audi sedans (S7?) where there's no real definite "trunk" it just kind slopes all the way to the back.
13381525, sidebar: WHY do they change so much?
Posted by infin8, Thu Apr-30-20 09:54 AM
is it me or is every year of accord a completely new design?
13381533, not sure what Honda is after...
Posted by Dstl1, Thu Apr-30-20 10:02 AM
(besides sales, of course) but feels like every time I see a commercial from them it's "THE ALL NEW TOTALLY REDESIGNED FROM THE MOTHAFUCKIN GROUND UP ACCORD, BITCH!!!!!!"
13381593, Maybe, weirdly, they don't want it obvious how many are out there?
Posted by Nodima, Thu Apr-30-20 11:54 AM
Big redesigns mean you can see a dozen Hondas that are the same model, but not, and feel a little more unique as an owner of an Accord.

unique.
13381606, I think it a way for them to keep innovating.
Posted by tariqhu, Thu Apr-30-20 12:25 PM
gotta stay relevant with so many other options out there.
13381604, hyundai is the same

every couple of years i look at a sonata and i think that looks kinda nice then boom ugly

Posted by mista k5, Thu Apr-30-20 03:10 PM
im not saying the same design now looks ugly. im saying they change the design from a good design to an ugly one. then they go back to something nice every couple of years. theyre not happy we just doing some small refinements and waiting years for a full facelift or redesign.

with that said, your point does stand. some cars do look like nice when they first come out but then quickly lose their appeal.

now that i looked them up it might just be that time is passing faster than i thought lol

5th generation was okay, boring but not ugly. 6th is pretty ugly to me but i think it was a design that looked cool when it first came out then aged badly. 7th got back to looking more like the 5th gen but much better.

8th kind of looks like a refreshed 6th gen but also a completely different direction.

maybe the elantra is a better example

they went from this in 2016
https://www.cstatic-images.com/car-pictures/xl/cac60hyc021f021001.png

to this in 2017
https://blogmedia.dealerfire.com/wp-content/uploads/sites/854/2018/01/How-Safe-is-the-2018-Hyundai-Elantra-A_O.jpg

to for some reason this in 2019

and they recently announce the next one
https://cdn.motor1.com/images/mgl/NkAPy/s1/2021-hyundai-elantra.jpg

i think i read that they did the 2019 redesign because the 2017 elantra was eating into the sonata sales lol i guess that explains the 2018 facelift for the sonata

Posted by mista k5, Fri May-01-20 05:21 PM
they might have the same overall shape but honda just went ugly with the details. that audi looks nice. the accord? eh

i guess theyre both chasing a 2011 cls?
13381924, seen two Sport models on the road today. they looked aight to me. i'd cop.
Posted by PROMO, Fri May-01-20 01:45 PM
13383271, hmm
Posted by mista k5, Mon May-11-20 09:49 AM
these are starting to look nice to me in person now lol

i dont know if its the 2018 ones that looked dumb to me and they have refined them some for 2020 or my brain just adjusted.

over the past week i started at they look ugly to theyre okay, to eh i can kinda see why someone could like them to oh thats kinda nice.

13383608, yep, i did the same after seeing em on the road.
Posted by PROMO, Tue May-12-20 01:26 PM
to be fair, i didn't think they looked that bad from the start, but then seeing them in person, in motion?

i could definitely drive one. not my FIRST pick or anything, but not bad.
13383647, the thing is i first saw them in person
Posted by mista k5, Tue May-12-20 04:18 PM
saw one and thought they were ugly. accord has had some pretty good looking years so to see an ugly one kinda sucks. i think the first time i remember noticing one was over a year ago. like january 2019. it may have been before that.

i know pictures can be deceiving so i try to not judge too hard on that. i really didnt see this car growing on me it definitely has.
13381410, It's wild how many Kia Souls I see on the road
Posted by Oak27, Wed Apr-29-20 03:26 PM
13382128, I have one and its hideous
Posted by RobOne4, Sun May-03-20 08:04 PM
its ugly and slow but ITS SO FUCKING COMFORTABLE. Im just under 6'5" and every car i drive that isnt a truck hurts my knees because there is no cab room. I dont need a truck, I need MPG. In most sedans and SUVs I have to lay the seat back a lot so i can see through the windshield and not have my eye sight at the top of it. With this big boxy fucking thing. I can see so much and I have so much leg room. Also my hair or hats arent rubbing against the roof. I will ride with Soul's until the stop making them.
13381416, I had a 1985 Chevy Citation back in 1997-98. LOVED that car
Posted by FLUIDJ, Wed Apr-29-20 03:44 PM
It was a TANK
Had a roomy interior
Hatchback was versital.
And the engine wasn't too shabby at all...
Got it from the NC State surplus auction so it used to be a fleet car...but it was surprisingly kitted out with higher end options than most fleet cars...
My older brother wrecked his car up in MD so I was kinda forced to cede the car to him... he wrecked IT less than 3 months after I sent it up to him... smh...I was pissed..
I miss that car...
13381417, did you think it was ugly back then?
Posted by mista k5, Wed Apr-29-20 03:47 PM
i dont know why that car screams mexico to me. maybe one of my uncles had one.

i cant say it looks good. i can see how it can be practical though.
13381442, Oddly enough, no. I didn’t think it was nice looking
Posted by FLUIDJ, Wed Apr-29-20 05:57 PM
But it spoke to me lol...
The interior really won me over
Front bench seat with the fold down armrest
That old school velour fabric was so fresh
And mine was the French vanilla ice cream colored

13381528, Chevette on steroids
Posted by infin8, Thu Apr-30-20 09:57 AM
I hated Chevette's. I thought they were ugly.

Then we ended up with one, and it was right around the time I started driving and you couldn't tell me shit. I was 17, riding around with a boom box in the backseat because the radio didn't work.

13381618, Man my cousin had a Chevette and it was the lick!! Crazy that you just
Posted by FLUIDJ, Thu Apr-30-20 12:51 PM
don't see them on the road at all hardly anymore. There's a black Chevette at the spot up the street from me where I get my annual safety inspections done...I'm real tempted to go make an offer on it! lol...
13383603, my first car was an '81 Chevette
Posted by kevb, Tue May-12-20 01:07 PM
4 speed. That car was special. $10-$12 to fill up, had the windshield wiper kit, the steering wheel would vibrate past 60 mph, and I used to spray paint the rims chrome when they would get a rusty hue to them.

kev
13381432, Lexus
Posted by sectachrome86, Wed Apr-29-20 05:09 PM
Imagine not just buying an ugly car, but paying a premium for it
13381435, the whole brand???
Posted by mista k5, Wed Apr-29-20 05:17 PM
i dont think youre wrong. i think the only one ive liked was the IS around 2000. that was basically if it was all kitted. it really wasnt a great design either. just not ugly lol

maybe a concept here and there
13381439, The 1st gen IS was fire, to me...
Posted by Dstl1, Wed Apr-29-20 05:46 PM
man, was it a bitch to work on. Lexus, in general, have always looked bloated. The sleeker models were the ones I found myself liking. I’m iffy on this thing they (and Toyota, by extension) are doin with the super-huge grill.
13381441, i remember i drew it
Posted by mista k5, Wed Apr-29-20 05:55 PM
i think i was obsessed with the rear lights lol

i looked up some pictures earlier and it kinda just looks like a mid 90s accord or civic. the rear lights are still cool, even though it has since become standard on so many nissans lol.

i guess it just doesnt really look like its a luxury car. i remembered it looking cooler.

nice humble brag tho
13381445, it was sold shortly in Japan as the Toyota Altezza...
Posted by Dstl1, Wed Apr-29-20 06:10 PM
and spawned a seemingly never ending aftermarket of “Altezza style” tail lamps. Hell, I had a set on my 2003 Ford Focus, lol.
13381458, Pretty much
Posted by sectachrome86, Wed Apr-29-20 07:42 PM
The predator face grille they all have is gross. The LC 500 is cool though.
13381585, Eff that...I love my new ES F-Sport
Posted by soulfunk, Thu Apr-30-20 11:14 AM
I get that the Lexus grill is a hate it or love it type of thing, but I think it looks great on both the current LS and ES models...

13381969, It's terrible on the GX and LX. In general it was terrible
Posted by soulfunk, Fri May-01-20 04:11 PM
on many of the cars too because they just threw it on to old designs in most cases as mid-model refreshes.

All that said, I love my car. Fell in love with the LS when I first saw it in that Black Panther commercial, so when they made the new ES F-Sport look like a smaller version of that I had to get it. With the red leather??? No brainer.
13381610, they're hella boring looking for the most part.

13382038, yeah. the majority of them you see.
Posted by will_5198, Sat May-02-20 01:02 PM
most are like the Michael Kors bag of luxury cars. and driven by people who'd be better off with a less expensive vehicle.
13383612, Lexus was THEE shit. They died to me when they ruined the GS.
Posted by PROMO, Tue May-12-20 01:40 PM
2nd and 3rd gen GS series was hardbody karate.

4th generation? why not save and buy a souped up Camry.

2008-2009 lexus GS 400-series (i'd take any of 'em) on 20's was my dream car.

gmc jimmy. even the name was ugly. it was all I could afford.

https://static.cargurus.com/images/site/2008/03/21/00/06/2001_gmc_jimmy_4_dr_slt_suv_4wd-pic-30106.jpeg

my previous car was a two door and I'd recently had a baby. two doors wasn't the move. the lady that sold it to me had it in her garage for years after her husband passed. so it was just sitting there. she finally decided to sell it to me and let me do payments until I got it paid off.

an then what happens? not long after it was paid off, got into a wreck and it was totaled. honestly, I hated that truck. but it got me around cheaply. I wasn't planning on getting rid of it until that lady ran into me.

I don’t see the appeal unless they were dirt cheap.
13382131, I loved it.
Posted by kajsidog, Sun May-03-20 08:51 PM
A friend's dad rented one, we were in college and borrowed it for the night basically as a joke to make fun of it. We had a ball and it had some cool features that all escape me now. Both of us really liked it. His dad ended up buying one, a decision we fully supported.

They are hideous though, I never understood Pontiac's love of plastic siding.
13383604, Boring is probably worse than ugly
Posted by spenzalii, Tue May-12-20 01:11 PM
I drove a Saturn L200 for 11 years. It was pretty much invisible. Didn't hate it, didn't love it. It felt like a rational choice, but not like buying a Camry or a Galant. Just in the middle, but it's main claim to fame was plastic doors.
13383611, Wife’s first car was a Saturn Ion. We put 250K on it before it gave out
Posted by legsdiamond, Tue May-12-20 01:32 PM
Why’s crazy is we could fill it up for 12 dollars when we lived in Philly in 03.

They were boring but reliable. Never had any major issues with that car.
13383645, With basic maintenance a Saturn would run for a while
Posted by spenzalii, Tue May-12-20 04:09 PM
My SL2 soldiered on for close to a decade before someone hit me and totaled it. I got the L200 off the strength of the Saturn family even though there was nothing that made it better or worse than any midsize car, which is a cardinal sin.

I did put 230+k on that car. Couldn't see putting another engine in when the timing chain broke

business in the front. ugly party in the back.
13383710, I disagree with this one
Posted by handle, Tue May-12-20 10:47 PM
I lease one until 2012 - when I bought one.

So I've been driving a Crosstour for the last decade and I like it.

It's basically bigger accord with a hatchback. And from 85% of the angles I like the way it looks.
