The first two or three albums, from the 90's, are probably best classified as neo-soul. She came out on the heels of Badu, D'Angelo, Maxwell...etc., and fell into that genre, but as she progressed she started taking her sound in different directions.

I've seen her a ton live, and she's a bit temperamental. Her crowd doesn't always want to go in the directions she want's to take them.
