her progression & journey just doesn't compute otherwise. too many layers... starting anyplace else would be like eating a double decker sandwich from the inside out.... messy and not very enjoyable...
13380172, Since y'all linking & calling out tracks and shit.... here

13380170, great opening track to her classic album, Comfort Woman (2003)

Now I haven't listened to much her music outside this album, but its incredible. Honestly, I would start from there. The whole album is streaming on youtube.

13380175, It's hard to pin her down

The first two or three albums, from the 90's, are probably best classified as neo-soul. She came out on the heels of Badu, D'Angelo, Maxwell...etc., and fell into that genre, but as she progressed she started taking her sound in different directions.

Luckily, I saved this link from a post from over a year ago...

I've seen her a ton live, and she's a bit temperamental. Her crowd doesn't always want to go in the directions she want's to take them.

13380176, ... she was AHEAD of ALL of them...PL came out in like 92/93..she set the

stage IMO...
she laid her lane and has expanded on it ever since...it twists and winds but it's hers...other folks just jumped into from time to time...
she was woke before woke was woke.
she was gay Black and proud before it was trendy
a LOT of folks owe their whole essence to her IMO....

13380185, True, but she didn't get mainstream love until neosoul jumped off

Early, I used to see her with and a handful of other artists like Vinx and Basehead, that were sort an alternative mix of jazz, hip-hop, electronica...etc.

But I wouldn't say she got truly popular until the neo-soul scene really jumped off. I don't even know that I'd categorize her as such, but that scene adopted her.

I actually don't even think she wanted that adulation. She seemed to dislike the boho crowd that just wanted her to do Dreadlocs.
13380247, Vinx!
