13369170, This "Outbreak" parody flick sucks (Coronavirus press conference) Posted by mrhood75, Thu Feb-27-20 04:22 AM
I know Leslie Nielsen has been dead for 10 years, but even his corpse would bring more gravitas to this role.

Dude up there Cuban B-ing a potential global health disaster because he's scared its effect on the stock market is going to hurt his re-election chances.

13369193, More than nervous. This shit ain't normal, man... Posted by flipnile, Thu Feb-27-20 10:21 AM
- Cities of 11 million don't get locked down for the equivalent of a flu outbreak.
- The media blackouts and misinformation
- Shit just popped up out of nowhere (it's human-to-human but came from bats? lol)...
- ...but conveniently in China, who the US was passing words with...
- ...and it's election time
- Ain't no shot like the flu, either
- Mass media and the Internet could try and incite panic and hysteria
- Especially 'Russians' or whoever else would benefit from societal breakdowns here or in other countries.
- Iran
- Pence
The 4th wall got some cracks we're seeing through, is my guess.

13369242, actually no. I just talk to someone in CDC and this is Posted by lsymone, Thu Feb-27-20 12:22 PM
what they said:
If you smoke and or have weak lungs- might as well start picking out your funeral clothes and casket.
The virus will avoid young kids since they have a built in immune system to attack flu like viruses anyway.
Its the 30 and over crowd that'll get sick for awhile and beat it, granted they have healthy lungs.
The only U.S. case was a community transmission of the virus- meaning that person did not travel to China or overseas.
This is similar to the Spanish Flu in 1918. where everyone knew someone who died from it.
This virus will die down this summer, but the 2nd wave will be deadlier this fall.
It takes a year to come up with a vaccine. Hopefully by then they'll have one soon, yet they have to test it on animals and small group of people to see if its effective or worse than the virus. Remember the HIV vaccine in the 80s killed more people than HIV.
Last if this get really bad: than Congress will issue out a lock down of infected cities to be quarantined. For example, think of Chicago where all flights will be cancelled, state to state boundaries are closed off, highways/interstate closed, no public transportation. Can it be done, yes. Will it be done, according to Trump on Wednesday night, he said "we're working with each state."
80,000 confirmed cases, 3,000 cases have died.

13369243, Nah Posted by bentagain, Thu Feb-27-20 12:22 PM
Bird flu Swine flu Sars Ebola
I mean, just in our lifetime, this does seem to happen every few years or so
Take MERS for example...oh, you haven't heard of MERS...LOL
People die from the flu every year, yet that fact also seems to surprise folks
These viruses mutate...we get treatment...rinse, wash repeat.
The part that is frightening...is having science denying bible thumpers prescribing prayers as treatment
Yeah, that's fucking frightening
But coronavirus...nah, not worried
Ever heard of mrsa?

13369247, MURS, yes. MERS, no. Posted by FLUIDJ, Thu Feb-27-20 12:26 PM

13369252, RE: Nah Posted by lsymone, Thu Feb-27-20 12:38 PM
>Bird flu >Swine flu >Sars >Ebola
even Zika H1 N1
The CoronaV is alarmist than the aforementioned, similar to the Spanish Flu. There are 6 different kind of Coronavirus- Sars and Murs killed a lot of ppl. Sars killed about 10% of the ppl, Murs killed 30%. While the other 4 are common head colds. Sars and Murs on the other hand don't transmit very easily.
CV is transmissible, not like measles, but about like the flu, hence those recent cruises. so yeah I'm not worried about getting it, I'm more annoyed if each state carries out Trump/Pence orders to go on lock down.

13369280, Seriously. Posted by Hitokiri, Thu Feb-27-20 02:18 PM
The hysteria is wild. Like we don't see these things every few years. Yes, take precaution. Be careful. But c'mon, some of ya'll a tripping. Somehow people have conveniently forgotten about all of those other outbreaks and how they didn't destroy the world.
|
13369290, agree/disagree Posted by double negative, Thu Feb-27-20 02:49 PM
I'm team you in the sense that I'm not worried
well, my first worry is lockdown and so I've stocked up a bit just in case.
BUUUUT
when it comes to the disease itself the part that has me slightly worried is the fact that it's easily communicable + has a comparatively low fatality rate which means it can spread like shit and potentially kill a fuckload of people by playing a numbers game - where as something like ebola was harder to get but it had a much much higher rate of fatality.
it's not like spanish bird flu, healthy young people are not dying from it - but it has a crazy infection rate
HOWEVER
looking over the collected day over day metrics I can't tell the rates are receding, plateaued or gearing up for a jump - the US has 100 confirmed cases which could become thousands
HOWEVER
yeah, it's all kind of just a really fucked up flu, 80% of cases are mild and looking at numbers the extreme cases seem related to preexisting conditions + old age
I'M LIKE
get a face mask, some sanitizer and just be ready.
it's not the knowing thats bad right now, its all the unknowns. If the WHO or CDC is saying "Guard your grill, knuckle up, put em up, yup!" then do that shit and make sure the xbox or steam or whatever is all up to date.

13369266, I'm a NYC resident Posted by Numba_33, Thu Feb-27-20 01:32 PM
so I'm surprised it hasn't hit the city yet to be completely honest. Curious to see how hard it'll hit NYC and to see what the response will be.
I'm hoping the fact that I don't use mass transit will save somewhat from getting caught out there.

Awesome idea to put a religious bigot who doesn't believe in science in charge of a pandemic task force.
