Generally speaking, anything that indicates that someone is attempting to play on my heart strings or looks like an obvious story, and it's usually a hard pass from me.

That goes for everyone from the dude on the street with the overly detailed story behind why he needs ten bucks for gas, to the salespeople trying to build a rapport through some commonality.

All of that's a quick path to me shutting down completely.
