Never cut it low. Keep it at around 3-3.5” for the hot summer months ahead.

Sounds like you need to kill all of your grass in the back and start over. Get some good manure and seeds and you should be good hopefully.

it has a bag, but I dont really rock it because it fills up mad fast. It also has a plastic piece I can leave in to mulch or remove and just blow grass out like old school. I don't cut mine super low, but I cut often. Self-propelled is life-changing, might I add.

I use the bag to mulch the leaves and dump them at the base of my trees.

The plan was to rent a house, but the numbers worked that it made much more sense to purchase one.

The median condo price in San Diego is $440,000, while the median single family home price is is $640,000 - so some of us are just plain priced out of having a lawn. (Some condos have more yards than others.)

Even moving to the "country" in San Diego to a place like Alpine or Ramona only gets median SFH to $570,000.

Only way I can see possibly ever getting a yard is for folks to be a)wealthy 2)have a lot of equity in a house they bought when it was more affordable or 3)couple up.

I looked it up: The median price of homes currently listed in San Antonio is $234,999.

Wow - that's way way way cheaper than I thought. You could get a place that requires a tractor and a crop duster for half of what a house in my neighborhood cost :)

Like the 230k is an increase from the last five years.

I’ve gotten 8 years out of it and it still works, so I love it. I just have a small front yard. Takes me maybe 20-25 minutes to do. And living where mowing season is about 6 months long helps the longevity.

Also it’s the one with the hose hookup so you can clean under it while it’s on. Pretty good idea.

...new oil and gas and its running like new ..i usually take it in for a tune up in spring, but i'll do that later in the season this year

Had a rear bagger that I only used a handful of times until I read that mulching the Grass was better. Last time I saw the bag it’d disentigrated.

Joint finally died early this winter....

Bear in mind....I literally NEVER changed the oil on that joint for the entire lifespan.
I’d routinely leave gas in it over the winters.

Never sharpened the blade.

I might have changed the filter on it once... I know I brought a new filter at least at some point.... but I honestly don’t recall ever actually changing it.


So yeah....

Bought it used for $125 off craigslist.

Bought the tractor spring 2006 or maybe late 2005 at $999 from Home Depot. Bagging unit was an extra $300. Have had the engine serviced twice in that time frame, have had the undercarriage serviced once. Had to replace blades once or twice myself in there too.

I have .93 acres. Tractor is not essential but it is definitely helpful. next one might be one of the wider walk-behinds that are coming out now, but as long as the current one is working OK, I'm good hanging onto it.

Generally speaking my interest in grass has declined significantly. I haven't put down fertilizer or weed killer in ten years... we have kids, a veggie garden and chickens, and I've converted more and more of the lawn to flowers or veggies. And lately I've gotten much more interested in insects and butterflies, and the best and easiest thing you can do to bolster those populations is mow less frequently and stop fertilizing. So last year I never even mowed my front yard (trimmed around the edges and a walkway across it with string trimmer) and I think I only mowed the back six times, roughly once a month April - September, which it got really long.

I compost the grass - used to do it only once in the spring and once in the fall, but since I wait so long to cut it now it's too much to leave on the yard.

String trimmer is a Red Max and it's fantastic, a world of difference from the Ryobi I had prior to that which was terrible.

Also in rotation:

-two Mackissic mulchers - a big PT12 and a smaller LSC505, both purchased used. I mulch the leaves and pine needles as well as small branches and other garden waste and put back down on my flower beds.

-Stihl farm boss chain saw. Love it.

-Shitty Black & Decker hedge trimmer. Only need it once a year to cut back the forsythia. Still wouldn't mind something better.

-awesome new pole pruner set. Expensive as hell but man is it better than my old Home Depot jobby.

Bags and mulches. I change the blade every other year, rebuild the carb every spring and replace the spark plug. It does the job.

The speed limiter/throttle is out of wack, so I do need to get that linkage right this year.

If I were to replace it I may go battery (lighter, no gas) or self propelled (because lazy)

All gas powered and self-propelled.

If it's a big lawn, definitely get self-propelled. Also if it's a big lawn, definitely don't bother with the battery powered or corded electric brands.

The Deere was the only one I bought used, which happened to be my favorite as far as performance. The Honda was a reliable beast and the Craftsman wasn't bad. Oh, and a Toro weed wacker and manual hedge trimmers.

Now I just hire the chore out, the guy who does it is efficient and amazing. He uses a one of those zero-turn riding mowers, unsure of the brand. His dexterity using the weed wacker and hedge clipper is outstanding, I believe they're DeWalt and battery powered (they're yellow). What he does in 20 mins would have taken me 3 hours.

It does the job and it's light. It doesn't have the walking part, so I'm needing to push it, but because it's so light that's not a problem right now
Meanwhile the lack of fumes if helpful.
It has a mulch bag and a mulch plug. About 45 minutes of run time and a light.
And since there's no oils or gas I can stand it upright in the garage
My only complaint is that it's not fast enough on the blades. Like I feel as if I have to walk wild slow or make a second pass to get the cut that I'd like.
But with all of this "idle" time right now, I can live with that

Oh and got it from Home Depot via delivery.

Sure, there may be some gas powered mowers that do a better job cutting, but having to deal with gas/oil/maintenance for a lawn mower is for the birds. Being able to stand it up is awesome too. I have a bunch of Ego stuff now.

copped this trimmer yesterday after fooling with my gas one, on Saturday and getting pissed off. It was cool to just turn it the fuck on and do my business. Joint was strong, too. Might cop the mower that works with this system.

it supposedly has a turbo feature where it speeds up the blades when it senses tougher cutting conditions. It's got some good reviews. I'll probably cop, regardless...cuz, I be buying shit. It would be cool to not have to go get gas in cans anymore. I already no longer have to make a gas oil mixture for my trimmer. Won't miss that.

Not too high. In the winter, it gets really dry due to lack of rain. We've had one day of rain in maybe the past 35 days. But the summers are a completely different story. We get showers literally every single day. So I keep it kinda low since I have to mow so frequently.
