He has a good show/on air podcast called The Funny Don't Stop. It's where he brings his true charisma & blunt & honest approach to the mic. He has some cohorts which bring the heat.
13360621, Marriage Story -
Posted by infin8, Mon Dec-30-19 12:14 PM
not bad

The Irishman -

not as good as the hype, not as bad as the negative publicity.

Kevin Hart -

still on the fence. I clicked on the trailer, but aside from either stand-up comedy or a movie, I don't see why I should care about it or be 'entertained' by it.

Deon Cole "Cole Hearted" -

not "deep" or knee-slapping, but like-ably funny. Definitely has some good moments

6 Underground -

I really like Ryan Reynolds, but I couldn't suspend belief enough to be engaged by him in THIS kind of role.

13360647, Mandalorian, The Good Place, A Different World... Watchmen
Posted by legsdiamond, Mon Dec-30-19 03:06 PM
The wife is watching Watchmen and it’s even better the second time around. Missed some serious clues. Friends were over and they were all in even tho they never seen it before. It’s that good.

The Good Place. My coworker recommended it... it’s aight. The idea is great but it’s just ok.

A Different World. Love this show.. I throw it on just cause. I forgot Halle Berry made a cameo. So many faces in the background of people who ended up doing big shit. Also saw Sinbad in Charlotte at the Midnight Diner over the weekend. 6 degrees.

Mandalorian... just realized the dude who wrote Swingers is directing this series. He did his thing. I’m legit mad it’s over.

Also need to start Lost in Space 2.

He died in Ep. 2! Truly didn't see that coming. They set it up like it's gonna be all about him but, it's Stephen King, so there's this macabre shit going on in the background. Can't wait to see that develop more.

In Ep. 3, right when the asshole cop pulls up to the barn by himself I can say I didn't know what was gonna happen...until they shot from under the truck of him taking a piss. Classic horror shot. I knew some bad shit was about to happen to him. I thought he'd be dead though, so what DID happen to him.

Man, I'm pissed I can't binge this.
13363215, Man, that cop is an asshole..

When he went up their late night I knew it was a bad idea.

I was thrown off by that second episode hit I guess he has to go shoot Ozarks.

Love the early death/spin used on this show. Kinda mad tho because I really like watching Bateman on screen. Had no idea he would become this type of talent.

Ramy

The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel

Watchmen was more than anything I could ever want or thought I needed. I love the series (and could never get into the comic).

I like Ramy, a lot. I started watching because of Yousseff's Golden Globe win.

The 3rd season of Marvelous Mrs. Maisel isn't as good as the first two seasons, to me. I love most of the show's characters, so I'm not going anywhere.

I've never watched CYE. I think it's funny, but I also don't like some of it.

Pen15. It's alright.

13363253, Highlights from the past 3 months:
Posted by double negative, Wed Jan-22-20 12:27 PM
-Patriot. Dark comedy, smart, sad, funny, gross. Full of WTF moments, funny. Beautifully shot.

-Cartoon President. Funny, recommended if you follow politics.

-The Feed. Meh. I mean, its good but it moves SLOW as fuck.

-Mr. Robot. I havent been this fucked up on a show in a long long time. That last season was like a fucking dagger to the face. The opening to the 7th episode was fucking art...hell, that entire episode was art.

-Ray Donovan. I got through season 1 and kinda stopped at season 2. I can't find the energy to go on, it seems to drag.

-Suits. Alright. Meghan Markle is fine as hell in this show. I never got it until I watched this. The show is so bad its good. Also, Gina Torres, fine as hell.

-Season 3 of Marvelous Mrs. Maisel. This show does not disappoint. I don't know how to feel about the Shy Baldwin reveal, I'm of two minds about it and and one of them is admittedly inappropriate.

-The Expanse. I'm only trying this because people keep fucking talking about it and there are 7 seasons. So far it's good-ish and I can see how it could be a Star Trek replacement. Still not sure, I don't hate it but I'm also not geeked about it, it's like a spiced up bowl of oatmeal with craisins and brown sugar.

-Legion Season 3. FUCK. Still trying to watch this, I loved season 1 and season 2 but this is getting harder to watch and justify.

-Pose Season 2. Just no. What the fuck are you doing? Season 1 was good, season 2 is...trying.

-Billions. MY NIGGA, I love this shit and I can't wait for it come back in may. It's so dumb I can't forgive myself for liking this shit. Its not even in the same realm as Succession.

-Euphoria. Tried it. Entertaining. Drake.

-Chernobyl. Fuck, why am I sad? Oh right, I watched the sad show.

-Silicon Valley. Sad to see it go. Very very sad, but, the welcome was long worn out and I get the sense the SV start up era we knew from the mid and late 2000s is gone and we're on to some other shit that I still cannot identify and I work in tech.

13363788, Ray Donovan is cool for a few seasons. It's pretty bad now
Posted by Mynoriti, Sun Jan-26-20 01:45 PM
Showtime has a bad habit of letting their shows run on to a point where you forget when they were ever good to begin with. Shameless being the most glaring example right now with Ray Donovan and Homeland not far behind. At least Homeland is hanging it up after this season.

13367162, Oh there's a third season.
Posted by stravinskian, Thu Feb-13-20 11:40 PM

As far as I'm concerned, the third season of Twin Peaks is the best thing ever broadcast on TV.

But it's very divisive. You might not be into it even if you liked the first 2 seasons.

After you finish season 2, watch the movie (which is also very divisive). If you're still into it, sign up for Showtime (as an okp you should have it anyway, for Desus & Mero). 18 viewing-hours later, you'll think "wait, what the fuck just happened?" And then you'll be trying to figure it out for the rest of your life.

There are rumors that a fourth season is brewing, but I'll believe it when I see it.

... opinion necessarily. And it'll probably work itself out, and not be what I think it is, but the "fat kid as comic relief" angle is what I'm referring to specifically. Just so outplayed to me.

Otherwise, some of the dialogue feels a little mehhh to me .. some of it is a little too on the nose. But that's a minor gripe.

But again I'm not even 3 episodes in so I'm assuming/hoping that's just an early perception on my part and isn't a season-long thing.

so it moves fast.

The animation was 'off' to me when it started out. Like, why are they even bothering with the medium if they are going to have regular actors with lines around their faces. Then the sci-fi / magical realism kicked in and it made sense.

It tied everything together, definitely was a Keyser Soze kind of moment, but part of me had a hard time believing the Wolf would swing so heavily the other way and hunt Nazis under an assumed identity.

Still, hopefully this leaves the story at a good place for Season2.

I'm kind of confused why it's not getting higher ratings on Prime. Wondering if it's a bunch of troll ass alt-right bois throwing the ratings out of wack. Lord knows I have seen some pretty hilarious complaints about this show from conservative / right-wing folks online.

i completely lost interest in the last two episodes. i expected the wolf twist/reveal. not really interested in season 2. kinda got real tired of jonah.

it was still overall entertaining but so much exposition.

im a bit confused about one part. there was a flashback showing meyer helping ruth get on a truck in the camp right? then he gets shot and ruth drives away with some other dude. uhm...how did they both end up back in camp? did i miss that? i would expect meyer to be dead at that point and for ruth to also be killed if they were caught. that was kind of weird.
13372868, hmm, I see your point.
Posted by T Reynolds, Thu Mar-12-20 08:26 AM
my wife was tapped out, but I was still into the finale. I kind of never fully warmed to Jonah, so his turn from sullen to grating didn't really tax my nerves too badly.

>i completely lost interest in the last two episodes. i
>expected the wolf twist/reveal. not really interested in
>season 2. kinda got real tired of jonah.
>
>it was still overall entertaining but so much exposition.

Usually anything that warrants 10 full minutes of monologue punctuated with the intermittent 'BUT HOW?!?!'s from the protagonist can't possibly be good.

>im a bit confused about one part. there was a flashback
>showing meyer helping ruth get on a truck in the camp right?
>then he gets shot and ruth drives away with some other dude.
>uhm...how did they both end up back in camp? did i miss that?
>i would expect meyer to be dead at that point and for ruth to
>also be killed if they were caught. that was kind of weird.

This warrants a revisit for sure.

..His motives were always clear: self preservation.

He saw an opportunity to protect his own interest (in the camp when he assumed Meyer's identity, with Ruth when she asked for aid), all to avoid being identified and ultimately punished. He knew the best way to keep his secret was to silence anyone else that could expose it.

d
13368687, Terminal (Robbie, Penn, Myers, Jeremy Irons' son, Dexter Fletcher) on Hulu
Posted by Nodima, Mon Feb-24-20 08:04 PM
It's a total nothing movie but if you like good acting, engaging line reads, constantly clever and absurd uses of lighting and the artifice of a sound stage, it's a pretty wild and quick 90 minutes. If they'd had tried to sell this movie even a little I think it could've been a small success, but it was filmed in 2016 and sent out to die on VOD among a flood of negative reviews in 2018 so maybe I'm wrong. I wrote a bit about it for my own memory if I could try to sell anyone a bit harder on it:

Someone had the bright idea to weld Lock, Stock & Two Smoking Barrels to The Seventh Seal and pretend it was directed by Nicolas Winding-Refn had he been sat in The Architect's chair and handed the keys to The Matrix (the augmented reality program, not the film franchise). I can see why this movie would be so divisive, considering it gives so much of itself away early on and needlessly complicates itself with a wonky timeline. Terminal overflows with confidence at every turn, from its ludicrous stylized lighting to its peak-Ritchie dialogue quirks to its Nolanesque fascination with the power of time to manipulate an audience.

At 90 minutes, Terminal never stops imagining itself to be the greatest achievement in film, and that allows for a compellingly brisk watch. At one point it's a Jarmuschian meditation on whether the joy of life is worth the price of death, at another it's practically a video game adaptation of The Game if Shrek were portrayed via full motion video and there was zero action. Seriously, what came first, the makeup or the casting of Mike Myers? Is his entire ensemble self-provided or did it come from the script? Did he ghostwrite this damn movie? Did Hideo Kojima?

If you like your movies pointed but pointless, an overdose on the idea that a series of photographs displayed concurrently at a rate that resembles actual motion is as much a delivery device for lucid dreams as any relatable reality, Terminal is your fucking jam. If you want a big idea, you're not going to get it. If the ending feels like the beginnings of a huge franchise here, sorry, Terminal isn't going to be Margot Robbie's John Wick. Instead, it's more like her Man on Fire as imagined by Harley Quinzel in a fever dream the first night after The Joker left her for dead for the first time. These are the sorts of huge swing-and-misses I think more people should be salivating over, not just because the miss part is wrong but because everyone involved with this stepped up to the plate and swung as hard as they could at every single pitch, unconcerned with whether making contact was the point.

13368688, The Escort, also on Hulu
Posted by Nodima, Mon Feb-24-20 08:06 PM
Did another little journaling about this one. I DO NOT RECOMMEND IT AT ALL, unless you find the need to queue up a rom-com with a more unique premise than "big businessman meets owner of local bakery". For a TL;DR - a desperate, sex-addicted journalist randomly runs into a high price escort "who went to Stanford" and decides to write a profile of her life, and they gradually fall in love with each other mostly through the emptiness of the sex they have with other people. It never made theaters so it doesn't have a rating, but if that sounds like an R-rated scenario to you it's pretty impressive how coldly they go about making a PG-13 film out of it.

---------

Sometimes, I get a good night's sleep, put on a pot of coffee, read the morning news and figure out what I'm gonna do with my day off. Others, I eat too little food, plan to have just one drink before friends show up and turn it into four, get way too stoned on the way home, order four types of wings on GrubHub, eat a couple of each and fall asleep before 9PM only to wake up shortly after midnight and just kind of linger around doing nothing until finally I pull up Hulu and find some milquetoast trash (while I put on a pot of coffee, read the morning news and so on).

Today, The Escort was that movie.

First, the pros: Lyndsy Fonseca brings a lot to a remarkably thin role, the (first) conversation between the two leads over their preferred sexual healthcare providers feels charmingly genuine and the sex-positivity of a movie that finds a sex addict and a sex worker find love through the tropes of a typical romantic comedy (all while still having sex with many other people) is truly unique. That's three small, good things about this full length feature written by the star of the film and directed by a guy who mostly wrangles you-never-heard-of-it TV shows.

Luckily, the cons are pretty lukewarm. The star, Michael Donegen, has a super relatable inability to act that makes him a pretty rancid screen partner for Fonseca but a fine on screen avatar for any failing upwards white guy in his early 30s that hopes to settle down with the prettiest girl he ever met one time. Louder, for the people in the back: he sucks. The script (again, written by Donegen) is so concerned with satisfying the invisible rules of screenwriting that none of its characters have full names, their motivations absolutely never have an impetus beyond the tropes they're built to satisfy and the dialogue is the equivalent of putting a traditional rom com on mute and banging out whatever your bad lip reading version would be.

In another era, this would've been some kind of Saturday Night Special on NBC that aired once and was immediately forgotten by everyone who witnessed or made it. It's certainly shot and lit like an overlong special episode of a television show, which over time became my true biggest gripe with this movie. Because these are characters we're getting to know over the course of the film, rather than a television series, the constant blandness of the male lead and the set design really struggles to draw any emotional investment out of the viewer. As a television show, they'd have had a chance to develop some chemistry and spread all the PG jokes about X rated topics out across a couple of months - maybe even workshop them into good PG jokes about X rated topics.

In the streaming era, Hulu adds it to their trash heap, Nodima groggily and belatedly presses play one Monday morning and, just as the day The Escort was born it remains a remarkably sterile look at the lives of two people who find love for each other through the sex they have with other people. I'm frankly stunned at how efficiently this movie sucks the life out of itself, scene by scene, until the very last frame where it seems to realize what a useless husk it's become and just gives up. There are points in this movie where it feels like they did a single take on the first day the actors met. One scene in particular, when the not-yet-lovers first meet Mitch's dad, reads so clearly like two actors that don't have the timing of their scene down that I was almost convinced The Escort exists primarily as educational material, a great example of how a dozen tiny little things can add up to turn a unique premise into a generic product, but also why so many directors and writers gravitate towards the generic product in the first place.

Turns out, formula makes for a completely watchable, comfortable escape from the actual bad things in life more often than not. Even if it has very little in its favor other than satisfying the factory settings and, in a just world, offering a director with more talent and a better script in hand some notion that maybe a movie starring Lyndsy Fonseca in a role where she's more than an excuse for a bland nothing of a man to pick up the pieces of his life would be a great idea.

The interviews after the documentary were interesting too. That story Rick Kirkham told about the old lady and the horse should've been in the documentary.

I was wondering why you said everyone being interviewed was missing limbs tho. It was just the one Asian person and the man who lost his legs jumping out of a plane prior to working there. He seems like a really cool dude btw.

They went hard as hell with the 'evil light skinned woman' trope although there's naturally a history of colorism in a racist as system, too much of this was fabricated.
Her main rival wasn't even light like that.
https://nmaahc.si.edu/blog-post/annie-malone-and-madam-cj-walker-pioneers-african-american-beauty-industry
She also wasn't the nasty asshole they portrayed her as. The movie has her telling Madam CJ that she didn't want her selling her products, but IRL she legit hired her as a salesperson.
I also haven't found any legit documentation of her daughter being lesbian. A'Lelia's girlfriend is confirmed a fictional character by her very granddaughter, who also says her grandmother was married to 3 men. She also says she had queer friends and "may" have dated a woman after her 3rd marriage. All we know for sure is that she would party and kick it with anyone.
Then there was the funeral director guy who tried rape her which NEVER FUCKING HAPPENED.
Booker T. Washington didn't say that BS to her about women staying in their place. He did have issues with the black beauty industry at first because all of them at the time were trying to imitate white beauty. He also ignored her when she stood and spoke up at that conference. Just a year later, he was calling her an exemplary example of black womanhood. Interesting history there. It was definitely on her to forge that relationship, no doubt, but that tongue lashing he gave her in the film never happened.

... like BB this is not that show.

But IMO it's more impressive than BB in that it doesn't *depend* on that constant action to keep it going. Additionally, we know the fates of a couple of the characters so to me that makes the writing strategy that much more difficult.

I highly recommend it. But at the same time, if you're someone who's looking for fast paced TV then you can probably just leave it be lol. And to be clear there's nothing wrong with that.

Posted by Nodima, Mon Apr-06-20 07:34 AM
I can see why nobody was clamoring to see/talk about this movie, but it's a REALLY good comfort food movie. Michael Cera plays a great poker shark/Tobey Maguire stand-in, Elba's accent breaks at all the most dramatic beats for his character for some good unintentional comedy, lot of great That Guy appearances, and for a 2hr20min movie it moves at a pretty brisk pace (think something like Blow).

Turns out, you marry Sorkin dialogue to underground poker games and a genuine something out of nothing underdog tale and you've got yourself a real nice quarantine popcorn flick.

Posted by Boogie Stimuli, Wed Apr-08-20 04:06 AM
I got some good recommendations from this post, so I'll share...

I liked AJ & The Queen far more than I expected to. It does a fantastic job of being relatable to everyone whether you have an interest in drag or not. Just real people dealing with real issues and emotions. It's more open and vulnerable than I would've assumed.

I was a huge fan of the L-Word years ago. Watched every season and loved it until Jenny's issues took over the show in the last 2 seasons. So when I heard they had a new season with the old characters and some new ones, I was all in. I wasn't disappointed at all. Can't wait for the next season. Great job bridging the two generations, and the show is still wonderfully written.

The Stranger is great suspense. You're wondering what the hell happened the whole time, and it unfolds very nicely, keeping you wanting more.

If you love shows about witches and the supernatural, you might love the first two seasons of Salem. The third get ridiculous... so much so that I never finished it. The first two seasons are really good though.

The 3rd and final season of The Runaways was arguably the best season if you're following that. Hopefully all these Marvel shows that were cancelled on Netflix, Hulu, and Freeform will resurface on Disney Plus.

Seems kind of like him and Estevan kind of fell into the cholo culture and representing it to the entire world accidentally. I was kind of surprised as a graff dude Cartoon started seeing the cholo art on letters while he was in college, and then tried to transition at kind of a later point.

The whole shit with Lepke being a straight up tecato, also the SA Studios kind of being a pioneer of what downtown LA has become amongst the drugs and poverty. All that stuff was interesting.

I wonder if both guys are from the westside, since Estevan said back then nobody wanted to go east of La Brea.

The story is set in modern day and centers 3 young women (2 white, 1 black) heading to "war college" where witches are trained to use their powers in service of their country. Very different take on witch shows from what I've ever seen. They're in the middle of their first season (episode 5 is next) My only lil issue with the show is whoever's writing and/or casting this joint goes out of their way to exclude black males from the show (you'll see what I mean if you watch it). That seems to be getting more and more common but impossible not to notice. The story line has my interest tho.

Birds of Prey was way better than I expected (I don't think recent DC movies are the best). My favorite DC joint of recent was Man of Steel. I have two top recent DC movies now. I thought the narration idea worked very well.

Both movies were more fun than I was expecting. The jokes landed more often than not in Bad Boys and the action wasn't to overblown taking over the entire movie. The addition of AMMO emphasizing teamwork and family made me think of the Fast and Furious series.

The cast in Birds of Prey is really good. The fight choreography was great especially in the final battle. Overall I'm really happy with both movies.

was ok. As much as people hate her I'm probably a fan in comparison, even though I wouldn't exactly call myself a fan. i'm in a minority of people who don't have a strong opinion about her either way, but i do find her interesting.

not too much new info here. Toggles back and forth between her history, and the 2016 campaign.

it's where the "Nobody likes him" quote about Bernie came from, and even though the "nobody" referred to people in her circle, it kind of demonstrates her disconnect from actual people. But it was also a rare moment of her being completely open. Her and Bern didn't like each other at all.

not sure if i'd recommend it. it's 4 parts. it was likable enough.

It keeps you on the edge of your seat and deals with psychological issues. It doesn't do as good a job as Dexter did in that vein, but it's something that Dexter fans can enjoy even if as a guilty pleasure.
Season 3 is supposed to come out in 2021, but I'm worried about it, because seasons 1 and 2 were based on novels by the same author, but she didn't write a 3rd novel, so season 3 might be written by the show writers alone. I already don't like how season 2 ended.
I wasn't fond of the depiction of the non-white female neighbors in the show because...

*spoilers*

because they just threw pussy at him when he was on the outs with his white girlfriends. It's like they were sexually loose props, and the casting directors thought it would be great to make them black and hispanic. He also has 2 different black male coworkers who are oddly cast as non-attractive people in a show of only attractive people.

Posted by SuiteLady, Thu Apr-30-20 06:58 AM
I didn't expect a few of those revelations. The actresses who play young Mia and young Elena were good and I felt like the one playing young Mia studied Kerry Washington's mannerisms.

I hope the final few episodes are as good. Now I want to know what is going to happen with Izzy because in the opening scenes of the first episode Bill says they haven't seen her.
13381503, I enjoyed this show
Posted by legsdiamond, Thu Apr-30-20 08:54 AM
Not sure why.. maybe it’s because I loathe Reese Witherspoon in these types of roles because she plays them so well. She’s real easy to root against.

Only issue was Kerry Washington having the ugly cry face for 30 minutes in every episode. Loved how she checked those white kids tho.
13381504, it definitely started slow but I needed to know what was going to happen

13381728, Okay I am not finished yet but 1999 was the year Safe Haven laws
Posted by SuiteLady, Thu Apr-30-20 08:55 PM
started and this is set in 1999. I kept wondering why they were making a big deal about leaving her at a fire station when a fire station is a safe haven, so I had to google it. Now, not waiting for them to bring the baby inside and the baby getting frostbite is something else, but I kept thinking "... but fire stations are safe havens..."

I love what Izzy did with those dolls! And I can't wait until I figure out why her mom don't want her to be called Izzy.

13381742, Finished. I am worried about Izzy. And I felt sorry for Elena.

13381766, I hope for the best for Izzy truly. Reese played the HELL outta that role
Posted by CherNic, Fri May-01-20 08:24 AM
I didn't feel bad for her or Linda honestly. They were just too peak white woman.

I don't think Bebe should have taken the baby (and honestly didn't realize the safe haven laws were do new b/c I too kept wondering why leaving the baby at the fire station was a big deal) but I understand her desperation.

I was telling a friend of mine I honestly didn't think they explained why Mia kept Pearl enough...I wish they would have explored that more and the fallout from the married couple. That part of the story seemed super rushed to me but besides that I thought it was a pretty good limited series.

13381247, It was good IMO. The Bigger Long thing was weird. Seems like the movie
Posted by SuiteLady, Wed Apr-29-20 07:31 AM
spent more time highlighting personal relationships than the horrors of slavery, which I am personally okay with. I know that the horrors existed even when they are not on display in the movie, and I also know that people had personal relationships. I take the stance that you only got two hours to fit all this stuff into and it was okay to take one and focus on that in the story line.

One scene that touched me (again - personally) is when she waded into the water and prayed "rivers of living waters flow through me." I kinda put my laptop down and gave the movie my full attention after that and I don't regret it.

It was good.
13381248, Kasi Lemmons has a weird thing for fabricated Black boogeymen.

13381241, The Rachel Divide
Posted by luminous, Wed Apr-29-20 02:03 AM
It's the Rachel Dolezal documentary. Funniest part is a college lecture. The host is a black man who understands how Rachel feels because he feels like a white woman. The looks on the audience's faces...
13381487, Thank you for mentioning this...
Posted by Boogie Stimuli, Thu Apr-30-20 08:03 AM
I'd heard the name of this, but for some reason I thought it was some random drama or something... had no idea it was her story. I watched it immediately after I read your comment.
You ain't lying about that college lecture. Oh... my... god...The look on the black peoples' faces is HILARIOUS. I watched that part like 5 times.
I really felt for her boys tho, especially Franklin who was just begging her to just let it all go. There's a scene after the has the baby, and she says "I'm gonna remain unapologetically black" and the boys stare blankly like they accept her craziness but just don't know how to respond. What a way to grow up having this person as your mother.

I feel really bad for Esther too. Rachel's brother Joshua got away with that shit. I wasn't aware that Rachel's parents only outed her to kill her credibility in the case against Joshua. That was the standout of the documentary for me.
13381501, We started it but tapped out

13381669, dope little movie. KIDS comparisons are inevitable.
Posted by Mynoriti, Thu Apr-30-20 03:04 PM
but Kids was current when it came out, so this feels more nostalgic.

also i felt like Kids (and most of Larry Clark's work) has an underlining low opinion of humanity. Mid 90s may have been cynical in its own way, but not overall hopeless. its mostly a certain subset of young people doing young people shit.

hit so many notes that felt familiar.

13382085, Wrinkles the Clown on Hulu
Posted by SuiteLady, Sun May-03-20 10:42 AM
So I watched this after I finished The Outsider, and there is an episode in The Outsider where they brought up that in the 'old country' adults scared kids into behaving with threats of a boogeyman coming for them if the misbehave.

Here is an article about the two shows:
https://www.salon.com/2020/02/11/from-the-outsider-to-wrinkles-the-clown--why-the-boogeyman-is-more-present-than-ever-on-our-tvs/

I think this is awful! Nowadays and in the old days, but more so now because we know more about the psychological impacts of such terror.

13382155, Extraction / 6 Underground double feature
Posted by Nodima, Mon May-04-20 01:40 AM
Extraction 2/5

There's a faked oner a little over half an hour into the movie that every action aficionado owes themselves, but otherwise Extraction is so desperate to be taken seriously that it never comes close to that high at any other point. Instead it spends its time languishing in a somber mood that asks one of action cinema's most charming leading men to be a total bore, and its action sequences often feel hopelessly in need of Chad Stahelski or Timo Tjahjanto's approval. That's not to say they're bad, only that because their ambitions are frequently only to be something else's equal they often fall short of the goal.

Plus I'm not ashamed to admit there's something excruciating about an epilogue that feels like it missed the point of its own film.

6 Underground 3/5

Watched as the second part of a double feature with one of Netflix's other big action tentpoles, Extraction, it's never been more clear how specific a Michael Bay experience is. The screenplay, from Paul Wernick and Rhett Reese, is essentially a bonus featurette for the Deadpool franchise (which they cowrote) filtered through the kinetic trash heap Bay's made a career of. Like the best - and worst - of Bay's features you'll find yourself exclaiming "what?" just as often as "wow!" and that's really all you need to know. This is a particular shade of stupid and gratuitous that the Times' Glenn Kenny was smart to align with the coked up sensibilities of Best of the Worst godfather Andy Sedaris. The hard part about Bay is that he gets to spend the money those guys always wished they'd have access to in pursuit of far less charming movies, which just goes to show that there probably is a direct line between schlock's charms and the money that gets thrown at it.

This is a movie with a water effect so insane it makes Brian de Palma's infamous restaurant flooding look like a student film and it's arguably one of the least affecting set pieces. This is also a movie that spends nearly the entirety of its first hour in a state of exposition that feels interminable; in any other director's hands these would be inarguable failures, but in the aimless imagination of Michael Bay the marriage of his terrible sense of humor to the edgelord fantasies of Reynolds and his Deadpool team is a recipe for generic action rendered generic Bay absolutely perfect for binge drinking after dark. There is some truly inventive action here, and as long as you don't spend too much time trying to figure out when Bay is or isn't in on the joke, this is one of his better non-Transformers movies in a long time.

13382182, Raising Dion
Posted by Boogie Stimuli, Mon May-04-20 09:40 AM
It was mentioned already, but I wanted to mention it again.
I was so surprised by this on so many levels. I don't know if I've ever seen a major sci-fi production where I was cool with the depictions of the black people. It's only one season so far, so they still got time to be on some BS, but for now I like it. I'm still kinda in shock. The writing, quality, story... all on point. It's not ALL black, but that's actually what's more rare about it, because Black people rarely, if ever, get to be respectable, centered characters NEXT to white ones in this way. After watching so many shows where black characters are completely shitted on (especially the black males in I Am Not Okay With This and Ragnarok recently), Raising Dion was VERY welcomed.

Anyway, Raising Dion is as much about being a Black single mother as it is about a kid with superpowers. Really good show for the whole family.

At one point, it looks like it might be leading you down a VERY familiar path, but just keep watching.

Imagine what it would have been like especially from the perspective of sincere representation being normalized years before this point.

If you're looking for something to watch and have any level of familiarity with DC characters, watch Justice League Dark: Apokolips War, but this isn't an out and out recommendation for everyone.

I gave up on DC animated movies.
I don't like anyone's "dark universe."
I think magic is a narrative cop out.
I've never, ever given 1 iota of a damn about John Constantine.

Here's what worked:
I had low expectations and was prepared to turn it off.
None of the unexplained references matter, they're not important, move past them.
It kept giving me "DAMN!" moments.
And didn't stop.
There were a few genuinely funny moments and again - a lot of DAMN moments.
And some of those DAMNs are "blink and you miss it."
Swamp Thing is a bad ass? Sure is in this.
There's a couple voice actors you recognize and register an "of course" when you read the credits.
NOTE: I watch Titans, so that story knowledge helped. Otherwise, I could see this going another way.

The greatest success though, is they give Superman a story you can care about! Superman delivers one ass kicking that is dope, and although it's stolen directly from the first Avengers movie, it's still very fun to see.

While not a recommend for everyone, it's a "run, don't walk" for anyone familiar with DC characters.
Solid B+

Just finished watching Dave, which was surprisingly good.

A movie now on Netflix called Premature was one I liked.

Watching The Act on Amazon Prime, pretty good.
Finished “Barry” recently... dope.

Father and especially daughter comes to mind. Some of the stories are really heavy too, which is why I can’t really watch more than one episode at a time. After watching episode 3, I needed a break myself.

It had been getting better as I stuck with it though. Episode 4 is worth checking out if you can, as the bass player’s storyline is something else..but handled well.

Like I said, still got 3 more to go but so far I’m intrigued.

I'll admit that s2 was jarring at first, but it is not only essential to the story but a terrific season of television in general.

You are doing yourself and the show a disservice by skipping it.

13385413, Like four different people.

It was like clockwork lol, I would tell someone I was binge watching The Wire since I had never seen it and they immediately were like “great show, but don’t watch season 2!” and “season 2 put me to sleep”.

Lol and one person even was like “Excellent show but seasons 2 and 5 are horrible!!” lol.

The common theme was that it was boring and no way to follow up season 1, which I admit was pretty great.

I’m 2 episodes into season 2 though and I like it.

Just because the focus is corruption down at the docks doesn’t mean it isn’t worthy of being focused on in my opinion.

It’s nice to still see season 1 players here and there, almost like cameos lol.

I’m sure they will be back in full force so I’ll just expect them to come roaring back in the future seasons and I’ll settle in to this docks drama for now lol.
13385437, It’s another angle of the drug trade

Not sure how anyone could hate season 2.

I will admit, the first time I tried to watch the Wire I threw on a random ep from season 2 and was like “wtf is this shit?”

but when you watch from the beginning it’s a great view into how the package gets into Bmore and it also plays a big part in the evolution of the Wire tap.
13385459, I just watched the brilliant season 2 episode “All Prologue”.

13386232, Yup. But then they sprinkle other characters in..

which I really appreciate.
13389317, And everything that happens in season 2 is IMPORTANT to S3/4

Think about what you're seeing there. You're seeing EXACTLY who Stringer wants to become and the potential endgames he has as either Frank or The Greek. But make no mistake that's what he wants - he wants to keep the gains he's made on the streets but he wants to move in suits and offices. But Stringer himself never gets to see it and see how goddamn aggravating and full of unwritten rules and two steps forward, one step back it all can be on that side as well. You're also seeing what happens when somebody who's not cut out for the life he's leading, Ziggy, has the privilege of his skin to make it just a bit further in life and grow into an arrogant prick instead of a kind, misguided teenager.

In a lot of ways, it's the way Valchek interacts with everyone that shows just how cynical Simon is about existing power structures in general. That guy operates like a cross between Avon and Marlo, using his achieved power to bend the current state of affairs to his will while often exposing new loopholes in the system(s) to expand that power. Simon has a soft spot for the dock workers, and the street gangsters, but he really doesn't have much sympathy for men like Valchek and Season 2 is when he really calls his shot on the corruption of power and how it affects policing at the highest levels.

Beyond all that the acting is just excellent and it's what gives Simon and his team the ability to get into what really affects the drug trade's major players and the fact that crime in Baltimore's minority neighborhoods isn't solely the fault of the moral character of its inhabitants without ever really having to go into detail about all that again, it can just be implied in the background of every scene in the seasons that follow.

Maybe you could argue that a more clever show had the dock workers there from the beginning, and was better able to weave that side of things into the full narrative, but I think The Wire's seasons follow a really clean arc overall. Season 1 is all street level drug stuff, and it's what the audience can easily relate to - it's the hook. Season 2 details what allows that distribution in the first place, via industries ostensibly unrelated to the drug trade. Season 3 examines how easy it is for the people responsible for controlling that industry and the problems that arise from its deregulation by exposing how distracted those people are from that problem. Season 4 then looks at the real tragedy of those three factors, which is that people born under their umbrellas has little chance of escaping them without a little bit of chance luck - arguably the best kids remain trapped in those systems, while the worst find a chance at redemption.

Or put another way, it's Detectives / Adjacent Players / Administrators / Bystanders / Investigators.

Then Season 5, which at its best explores how weary this makes the people who came along with the audience on this journey from the beginning have become. It's a pretty neat bell curve and I don't see how Season 2 could've found played the role that it does in the overall arc without expanding the world of Baltimore as much as it did.

Vanity Fair France:
Cinema: 25 years later, "Hatred" has lost none of its power (and of its relevance)
On May 28, 1995, "La Haine" left the Cannes Film Festival with the prize for the staging. By tackling the issue of police violence, the film strongly shook up French cinema.

"So far all is well, so far all is well" ... The phrase, repeated as a leitmotif, is today as cult as Vincent Cassel's De Niro-esque number in front of the mirror. On May 28, 1995, La Haine stormed the Cannes Film Festival, offering its director Mathieu Kassovitz the prize for directing. With an uproar, he and his actors - including Hubert Koundé and Saïd Taghmaoui - entered the history of French cinema.

The genesis of La Haine can be identified in its first minutes. Archive footage of clashes between police and protesters, to the tune of "Burnin 'and Lootin" "by Bob Marley. Barely 27 years old, with a few works to his credit (including his first feature film Métisse), Mathieu Kassovitz is driven by a desire for political revolution. "I thought of this film after a riot. From 1988 to 1994, it was quite hot, between the Malek Oussekine and the victims of various police blunders (...) And then, it is symbolized by the death of Makomé ", explains the filmmaker in the documentary devoted to the ten years of film. On April 6, 1993, the 17-year-old Zairian was shot in the head by a police officer at a police station in the 18th arrondissement of Paris. In the aftermath of the demonstrations provoked by the drama, the filmmaker pitched the project to producer Christophe Rossignon. With a watchword, a desire to "act".

It is in the city of Chanteloup-les-Vignes that the team settles down for a few months, to better acclimatize, take the temperature, know the terrain. "The goal was to live what they lived. When you don’t give a damn, that you’re 40 miles from Paris, that there’s no cinema, no boxing hall, no gymnasium. What does it mean to hang around? "Explained Sophie Quiedeville, stage manager. If the choice of black and white is necessary for a budget question, it also offers cachet to the film, a classic imprint that places it beyond the simple "suburban film". Because Mathieu Kassovitz's references are multiple and very American: a touch of Martin Scorsese, a hint of Spike Lee, and a touch of American Graffiti (for sound processing). He does not recognize himself in French cinema at the time - "films with two guys chatting in a kitchen", he jokes in the comments of the Criterion edition - and wishes to go against this trend. navel-gazing.

Between small altercations, discussions by interposed windows, and barbecues on the roof, La Haine thus gives to see a new territory. Mathieu Kassovitz opted for a temporal fragmentation - the time panels - to be part of the banality of everyday life while foreshadowing an imminent drama. The action takes place in 24 hours to capture bits of life - boredom like pure comedy - and to illustrate the implication of the failure of urban policies. The result in these scenes, oscillating between static and frantic movement, a general impression of lethargy and idleness. "They have no goals, no future. They are not integrated, but considered as immigrants. They're stuck in this No man’s land, "said Jodie Foster, who promoted the film in the United States. The arrival of a firearm within the small group thus comes to end, in an illusory way, their search for purpose and meaning. All that remains is this idea of avenging Abdel Ichah, their friend beaten the day before by the police.

Where Ladj Ly's Les Misérables comes to show the point of view of the cops as well as the inhabitants of the city, Mathieu Kassovitz is one with his three interpreters. And their marginality is never as obvious as during the Parisian interlude - which involves a long train journey to show the distance separating them from the capital - and their confrontation with other circles. The opening scene of the exhibition highlights this gap with the fauna of the bourgeoisie - all the more so with the choice of contemporary art as a class marker - which ends irremediably in an argument. Hatred leads to hatred, the film begins and ends in violence.

Preceded by exceptional word of mouth, La Haine was chosen to compete at the Cannes Film Festival. More than an object of resistance, it becomes a phenomenon: "People of the Gotha find it" astonishing, crying out for truth ". I thought I would shock more, unfortunately, we don't shock. There is a fashion effect. We talk too much about the film. But I hope it won't do him any harm, ”Mathieu Kassovitz explained to Télérama. Relations with the press are strained, the fact remains that the feature film seduces and allows its director to leave the Croisette with a price for the staging. At the end of the ceremony, the Republican guard turns their back on them, deeming the film hostile to the police (without even having seen it). Dissensions appear within the team: some of them boycott the César ceremony by rejection of the institutions, only the producer Christophe Rossignon and Hubert Koundé will seek the statuette.

What is left of Hate?" Wondered Le Parisien in 2015, for the film's 20th anniversary. Despite the coronation of Les Misérables last March at the Césars, the suburbs still remain a forgotten territory in the cinema, as Télérama reminded us. Failing to interest the 7th art, the question of police violence continues to be at the center of the news (more recently with the intervention of Camélia Jordana). Of the new faces revealed by the film, only Mathieu Kassovitz and Vincent Cassel are still present in the French cultural landscape. Disappeared from the big screen, Hubert Koundé told Première in 2016 that he had difficulty finding roles as a black actor. Said Taghmaoui, on the other hand, had to go into Hollywood to find salvation. His remarks, at Bernard Pivot's in 1995, seem almost premonitory: "It takes more than a film to change things. We are not politicians, we can just transcribe a certain reality of life. "

Pete Davidson is such a weird presence, dude's funny looking and handsome at the same time

Burr was really impressive in this.

A little too long, which comes with the territory with every Apatow joint.

i'd have to watch again for specifics. I never got used to over 2 hour comedies, and some if it is my default reaction to Apataow's stuff being unnecessarily long. Something like 40yo Virgin is easy because he lets gags go on to long , but this one wasn't gag heavy.

https://www.thegreatcourses.com/courses/the-black-death-the-worlds-most-devastating-plague.html

So this was on Amazon Prime for free till 6/30, I watched 1 ep on the 30th and ended buying the full series.

Its so interesting, its 24, 30 min eps, It talks about the society at the time, the epidemiology of the plague, the economics, the church, different countries/cites and their response to the plague, the cures and treatments.

It is so damn interesting the individual responses people had, either fleeing and leaving behind the sick, devoting themselves even more into religion, or straight up hedonism. Before plague, medieval Britain was 90% peasant/workers 10% nobles/knights. After that, it changed drastically.

3 part doc about the mafia's stronghold on NY in the 80s

it's well done, and there's some cool interviews and footage and as a mob junkie it's always good to see things i haven't seen before, and it's a different perspective as your usual mob doc...

that said, law enforcement's perspective is never as interesting as the actual mob stories. they do include some wise guys and mostly it made me want to hear them more than the feds and prosecutors. Also I don't want to see Rudy Giuliani again on anything unless they're reporting his death

Which is fine for what it is. Guess it just isn’t the tone I expected or that I prefer.

I was a big fan of "Good Wife" and now that "Good Fight" is the spin off of that show, I'm loving it as well, just kind of pissed that the seasons are pretty short since they are going by neflix standards and doing 10 to 12 episodes per season cause the show is part of CBS's on-demand streaming service they don't need to have the usual tv broadcasting number of episodes.

They have it where it's free to watch "Good Fight" so I'm taking advantage of that offer.

Five is ANNOYING. Klaus is annoying. They don't give Ellen Page much to work with and when they do it's always 0 to fucking 80.

Allison never mentioned her race once in season 1 and now all of a sudden she's a damn freedom fighter? It was pandering

they won't get any more outta meeeeeeeeee
13402747, lol. I kept saying "oh now she BLACK" for the first three episodes.

>Five is ANNOYING. Klaus is annoying. They don't give Ellen
>Page much to work with and when they do it's always 0 to
>fucking 80.

I was so tired of the Klaus story. That shit is just goofy. I understand they're trying to appeal to different kinds of people, but that's not for me. I have a friend who loves it tho.

>Allison never mentioned her race once in season 1 and now all
>of a sudden she's a damn freedom fighter? It was pandering
>

Lol, that's one way to look at it. Another way to look at it is she didn't have a choice but to acknowledge her race living in segregated America. I thought this was pretty much addressed at the end where she said being in that time period changed her. It'll be cool if she continues to be conscious of her race from now on. I don't have much faith that she will tho.
I actually thought her storyline was the most well-written, interesting, and even realistic of them all... especially with the way her husband reacted to her "rumoring" the officer on some "ummm, are you cointel pro?" type stuff lol.
Overall, I just don't think this show is well-written or brilliant in any way. It's as crappy as a network show like Flash or Supergirl (which is a not-so-guilty pleasure of mine), just with cursing and sexual references... mindless entertainment that suffices when there's nothing else left to watch.

13400495, rewatched 187 for some reason. It's still terrible but..
Posted by Mynoriti, Fri Aug-21-20 12:21 PM
i never realized what a fox news fantasy this movie was.

watching it and thinking there's no way Sam Jack's part wasn't written with a fed up white man in mind.

half assed research and it's written by a former teacher in the san fernando valley (who is of course now a trump guy). Teacher wrote a revenge fantasy about killing his worst students. cutting off their fingers and shit.

its got some chuckles but its even worse than i remembered.

Posted by mista k5, Mon Aug-31-20 10:16 AM
i think ive watched 3 episodes of each. a bit underwhelmed by both but the mandalorian has a little charm to it that i didnt expect lol

i guess im not a huge wu-tang fan cause 3 episodes in im like when are they introducing someone besides rza odb and meth????

had to look up who is who to see theyve all basically been introduced lol

my only real complain is with hulu and their stupidly loud ads. i thought maybe it was my setup but googled it and i guess its their thing.
13401947, Mando plodded to me til the last couple episodes
Posted by CherNic, Mon Aug-31-20 02:28 PM
I stopped mid episode 2 of Wu. It's probably not terrible but it was hard to see some of the actors as the Wu, especially since I had just rewatched the Showtime doc on them.
13401955, the length makes it easy to binge
Posted by mista k5, Mon Aug-31-20 03:02 PM
if i didnt want to play some zelda i might have finished the mandalorian last night lol

not sure how i would feel if i had been watching it as it was being released.

when i first saw shameik moores character on wu i thought it was ODB until i saw the actual character for ODB lol

ghost was the biggest one that i was like uh wait...really?? i think because of the documentary i was thinking it has to be one of them but i couldnt remember who.

i think the dialogue and slang is whats bugging me about the show. i definitely didnt grow up in ny and not in that era but it doesnt seem to match what expectations i had. seems unnatural. if it werent for the ads (the volume and length) i would be further along. i dont think i can do more than two episodes in a sitting having to reach for the remote to mute it when the ads come on.
13402267, I felt the same way early on about Wu.. but it’s actually a great show
Posted by legsdiamond, Wed Sep-02-20 10:45 AM
They really take their time setting it up but once it gets going that shit was fire.

I hope they continue cause it gives a great view into how hard it is to get that many people together in one crew.

The fact they knew of each other but all had different hustles, deals and beef..

Ghost and Rae’s characters don’t look like them but their story arcs are great.

I would encourage you to keep watching it but if you aren’t really a Wu fan I can see why it wouldn’t stick.
13402268, im gonna finish it
Posted by mista k5, Wed Sep-02-20 10:49 AM
so far i dont think its great but i dont think its bad. now that i know who is who (for the most part) it definitely makes it more interesting.

ads didnt seem that loud last time i watched, that would help lol
13402837, it got better
Posted by mista k5, Tue Sep-08-20 09:53 AM
some of the dialog issues i had got toned down some. they all still seem like characters more than people but its not too distracting anymore.

im starting to see some mannerisms for rae and ghost that fit.

not must watch tv but worth watching. will be watching season 2.

u-god is missing in season 1 right?

i thought masta killa too but looked it up and supposedly he was in one episode. dont remember him.

They got so much out of the source material. And the pace is almost always right. Stuff happens, they tell you why at least a little, and almost every end of episode is like 'awwwwwwww! What now!?'.

13403664, Watching this is making me think of some things like...
Posted by SuiteLady, Tue Sep-15-20 08:38 PM
... I went to magnet schools in elementary and middle school. I never knew they were something special until I was an adult and I moved away from KC and experienced other adults telling me about trying to get kids into magnet schools.

I did know that we learned different stuff than my cousins in the non magnet schools, for example, I went to a Greek magnet elementary so I knew the Greek alphabet as a kid. I don't know it now, because I haven't had any use for it since then but... yeah.

It was just my school to me. Even in middle school ... It was like I go to this school, my cousins go to that school *shoulder shrug.*

Another thing this show got me thinking about was when I worked as a counselor for the WIA (Workforce Investment Act) Youth Program. That scene with Star and Miss Elijah as the workforce agency ... MAN! I wasn't an asshole like he was but you do need valid ID and there was nothing you could do from the other side of the table if they didn't have it.

AND Gloria and that damn social security card! SO many kids came through with no social security card, no birth certificate or a raggedy one that was illegible. We used to give kids the address to got downtown and get their card. Then they would come back saying "It didn't work," "I couldn't get it," "they told me X,Y and Z and I still don't have my card" etc.

I had to drive a kid down the the place, stood in line with her and walked her through the process so I could write up step by step instruction to give to other kids.

And the birth certificate thing ... if they were not born in Missouri or Kansas, best we could do was google to stuff for them.

These were kids: 16-24.

So it pained me to see this grown women having these issues! But I know... I know it happens.

Raising Arizona
I'd said to somebody I wasn't sure I'd ever seen this movie from front to back before, but that's not true. I just can never remember in part because I always come to this wanting the full Coen experience but just feels like it's missing something. Raising Arizona really isn't that far off from an SNL movie from the same era, it's just got better cinematography, better acting and better writing...which goes for a lot, obviously, but...IDK. Never completely clicked.

Se7en
If Zodiac's on a streaming service, I tend to get really into that movie and everything surrounding it in October...but it's been up all summer, so I've already seen it twice this year. Might as well watch the prototype! It's always hard to remember that Brad Pitt is very much Doing a Thing in this movie, and that it takes nearly an hour to really get going even though that Gluttony murder is in the first ten minutes, and I wish they'd stuck with the power black finish right after Pitt makes his choice rather than the last monologue, AAAAAANNNNDDDD this is one of those movies you can never see for the first time ever again...but man, Fincher+Freeman+Spacey is about as surefire as you could get.

Prisoners
...So I figured if I watched the precursor to Zodiac, I may as well watch the inverse. This movie is a great example of pure pulp getting elevated into art by performance and direction because on paper, this movie is a little stupid, definitely gratuitous. Originally it had an NC-17 rating, and you wonder if it hadn't had American money behind it if it would have leaned fully into grindhouse territory. This one's still lesser known I feel like but Denis Villaneuve (Blade Runner 2049, Arrival) is behind the stick, Hugh Jackman, Jake Gyllenhaal, Terrence Howard and Paul Dano are the leads and if you're into Zodiac's analysis of the pain an unsolvable crime can inflict on driven men, Prisoners takes advantage of being 100% fiction to go places that film could never.

South Park COViD Special
In theory I still like South Park, but in practice I haven't watched the show since it's minor resurgence with the PC Police a handful of years ago. I think it's been thrown under the bus a little too often lately for its decidedly centrist sense of humor - it's a show about a group of kids mostly playing make believe, after all - but this special just didn't have much for me. I don't know what got in my head that Trey+Matt might have something to say during this whole thing - I guess Team America, Bigger Longer & Uncut? - but this was just a longer, later period South Park episode. It wasn't bad or humorless, but you could probably guess what it's got for you before you press play and that's a bummer.

Total Recall (80s version)
This movie exists, and thus it ought to be watched every once in a while.

Ford v. Ferrari
I kept wanting to call Batman Dicky throughout this thing...I had a lot of Fighter vibes here, where Bale is the star but somehow the script makes it about the other guy. I like Damon but he was mostly a typical Disney (was this a Disney movie?) blank slate here, I wound up with strong Remember the Titans vibes. The race scenes were awesome with the director James Mangold extrapolating on the awesome car sequences from Logan into a full movie, but it's just not that dramatic. I will say I got a little tricked by HBO Max's approach to time where the right side of the counter is how much is left, not the total runtime, so I was caught off guard when there was still an hour and a half left.

It's a good movie for car guys, and I always wanted to be a car guy, but more importantly I didn't become a car guy and don't think I'll ever figure out how to be one on my own terms so I sided with the more middling reviews of this movie. When it was focused on competition I was fully in -- when it tried interrogating these characters and their motivations, it fell flat. Whether it was a Disney movie or not, it had that weird feeling of a large corporation attacking the constructs of large corporations that always feels a little too "rah rah" for me.

I have literally been doing a episode of Bly, then an episode of AHS - back and forth. I swear those two character were cut from the same mold.
13408637, boardwalk empire season 1
Posted by bearfield, Fri Oct-16-20 04:58 PM
is this show bad? this show is probably bad. the only interesting part of it so far is the faux mad men peggy x don relationship in margaret x nucky and that's not really being explored that much. i assume it's a crux of the later seasons. the guy playing al capone is ridiculous. he's like 40+ years old, playing way younger, and usually just doing a passable james gandolfini impression. i don't care about jimmy. richard harrow would probably be an intriguing character if i hadn't heard paul f tompkins play the ghost of richard harrow on the comedy bang bang podcast prior to watching boardwalk. michael k williams edges into self parody territory even though he's barely in season 1

i understand that most shows find their footing in the 2nd season. is boardwalk worth sticking with?

13409848, they kept almost getting there. Middle of Season 2-start of Season 4 peaked
Posted by Nodima, Sun Oct-25-20 08:55 PM
But there's always little nagging things.

The problem that show had was that almost every episode had a great B plot, but sometimes the A plot was dragging way too long or sometimes the C plot was straight garbage and it almost never found the right balance.

In the end, it probably gave too much time to characters that weren't as interesting and drug out conflicts longer than they needed to go most of the time; it kind of had the opposite issues of The Wire, where it had this kind of prestige gangster thing it seemed like Winter felt shielded by and thus never in a hurry/worry he might get canceled despite the show never being terribly popular.

Lastly and counter to that though, it really seems like Michael Pitt being an asshole on set was great for kicking that show into 5th gear even if his character was one of its early highlights.

goddamn.

I loved every minute of it.

I finished it last year.

what got me is that I binged it right after I completed binging the Sopranos. I got emotional and nostalgic watching Boardwalk becuase it felt like I was watching the birth of the crime world the sopranos lived in and seeing the lineage of crime leadership begin. The sopranos in a timeline is not the next generation, but several generations down the line of bosses.

the Chalky season was A plus.

Purnsley was that dude.

13421436, I'm going in the opposite direction
Posted by shamus, Sun Jan-24-21 07:50 PM
Having just finished BE, I now feel like I should finally watch The Sopranos. It was just sort of vaguely on my tv "To Do" list before, but now I'm more eager to get to it. I've never been terribly interested in the mob genre before now.

Purnsley was great! And Season 4 was so interesting to me. I had been hoping the historical fiction of the show would at least touch a little on some place like Harlem, or some sort of expanded view of the Black (under)world in Atlantic City. So when the Chalky's (Cotton Club-esque) club was teased at the end of S3, I was excited. But I totally did not see S4's references to figures like Garvey and its depiction of UNIA coming at all. Wild. When Rothstein walked in to meet with Narcisse and had the RBG flag hanging behind him, I kind of fell out for a second lol. I was so glad S4 finally gave Chalky something to do besides react to violent white terrorism.

Dark Night of the Scarecrow (1981) - I saw this as a kid and thought it was creepy, still kind of is. I really can't believe a CBS movie of the week was so dark back then, recommend tho, streaming on Prime.

Phantasm (1979) - its fucking weird, makes little sense, has some mediocre acting and is low budget but I love this movie and the little metal death spheres.

Phantasm II (1988) - This first sequel is fun, kinda like a T2 or Aliens to the original, action packed, some weird goofy shit that makes no sense happens but its fun.

Posted by Mynoriti, Thu Oct-22-20 06:25 PM
I'm not much of a Sorkin fan but I really liked Trial of the Chicago 7. Pretty well done

Comey Rule. Daniels doesn't seem like Comey becuase who could you really get to play that lanky goon but i think he nailed his persona pretty well. The whole boyscout/only honorable man in the room idea he has of himself. I'm not sure how people will feel about it. It definitely shows literally everyone around him including his own family being like 'dude wtf are you doing?' but its somewhat sympathetic to him as well.

I thought Gleeson did a really good Trump. He's impossible to do without a straight up impersonation but i felt like he captured the the pettiness an ugliness. both physically and otherwise of cheeto.
13409850, Chicago 7 gets over pretty heavy due to its timeliness
Posted by Nodima, Sun Oct-25-20 09:03 PM
I was really swept up in that movie and didn't get why it wasn't immediately a frontrunner in critic circles, but stepping away from it you realize how Bobby Seale feels more like a prop for the white characters to rediscover their moral center than an equal (or more importantly, how his struggle FEELS like a struggle while Abbie et al constantly seem one joint away from a party on the courthouse lawn) and that feels even more sour with Sorkin's screenwriterly choice to make JGL's lawyer somewhat sympathetic to The Cause, but of course only when it can be maximized for dramatic effect.

He's a government stooge from the moment Rawls forces him to reveal his personal biases early on until Hayden's "remember, this film ultimately has a centrist perspective" final remarks (recall the FBI narc also nods in approval as an audience surrogate while the other lawyer marches out of the room) and it just kind of reeks of unnecessary varnishing for the sake of a more treacly narrative and some otherwise very likable actors/performances.

...But yea, OTHERWISE one of my favorite movies of the year because I'm a Sorkin stan through and through and this was way better directed than Molly's Game. Super kinetic and entertaining, but sometimes it felt like the Remember the Titans of courtroom dramas. On further thought I did find myself wondering what this movie looks like if Sorkin decides to leave the Chicago 7 behind after Seale's mistrial and remind us that while these dudes were kinda hypocritically partying on the graves of their peers in the name of their honor, he was fighting a real fight at home with no opportunities to relax and hang out doing stand-up at the local fraternity.

Been watching out for the star, Anya Taylor-Joy, since I caught her in The VVitch when I finally saw that last year. Or I should say I've wanted to, but I haven't seen Emma. yet and most of the other stuff she's been in just isn't up my alley. She kills this thing, and then there's a couple of fun young character actors in here as well - the kid who played Jojen in Game of Thrones and Harry Melling - as well as Marielle Heller who directed Diary of a Teenage Girl and the Mr. Rogers movie but looks like she's been in front of the camera forever.

There is a lot of tropey bullshit at the front and back half of the show, in particular there's a downward spiral in the 6th episode that feels totally dissonant from the patient pace the first half of the show has, but even that's kind of fun in its own silly way. Plus it wouldn't be a movie/show set in the 60s starring an orphaned white girl if she didn't have a magical black friend to help her get back on track (to the point, she actually has a line of dialogue that points out that's NOT what she's doing while she's doing it).

But you get your Mad Men style set design, some real cool Rocky-but-it's-chess montages (if you play chess, it's almost worth watching just to see chess on screen look like chess in real life - Gary Kasparov designed a lot of the games' plots himself), a lot of interesting stuff between a pretty but socially inept girl figuring out what power she has in a world that's not prepared for her physically or mentally...but sometimes not for the typical reasons (!) and it's super brisk. First show I watched in a single sitting (while playing some video games and stuff, sure) in a long while and I'd totally recommend it with, again, a small caveat that it's got 80% prestige and 20% cheese but that cheese is some heavy, goat's milk-ass cheese.

I ask if they saw the show yet, and ofc they absolutely love watching it, plus they dont mind Leticia who I think personally is carrying the show. she's quick on her feet, independent, and very brave to go to toe w/ a monster and racist pricks.

I love that every character has an abominable storyline they must overcome with systematic oppression, from Ruby- living in white woman's skin to Diana- defeating Topsy and Bopsy.

Movie on HBO about a family who plays hide and seek with the bride and tries to kill her.

Shit was a dark comedy. We enjoyed it.

Posted by FLUIDJ, Thu Dec-03-20 06:31 AM
sort all this dumb shit out lol....

This has got to be the WORST HBO production i've ever watched. HBO is usually top notch with their stuff too....this is like a CBS mini series with bad language and nudity....

I distinctly remember saying “I ain’t watching that shit”. I fell asleep on some movie one night, woke up during the last 10 minutes of Episode 3 and was hooked 😂

Posted by ShawndmeSlanted, Mon Nov-30-20 12:48 PM
https://www.imdb.com/title/tt5743796/

Warrior is based on stuff Bruce Lee was working on (which kind of became Carradine's Kung Fu) and is produced by Shannon Lee his daughter.

It has everything for me: history, fighting, smart dialogue.
Because its cinemax its more gratuitous violence and sex than i'd prefer, but I know the appeal. That stuff doesn't take away from how smart and well done the show is overall. The reason Im going hard is there is a chance this show (despite its acclaim) will not be renewed for a season 3. I need a season 3+ of this.

Warrior is part of a run of the most TV ive watched in a long time
Queens Gambit (up to episode 6)
Finished Lovecraft with the wife in 2 weeks
Watching weekly episodes of Mandalorian with and kids
Taste the Nation with padma Lakshmi
started
Schitts Creek and Ted Lasso

along with that, started watching old kung fu movies with the kids
- Return to the 36th Chamber
- Drunken Master
- The 5 Venoms

But Motherfuckers please go watch Warrior
13414922, I watched Warrior off of how much I enjoyed Banshee
Posted by Mynoriti, Mon Nov-30-20 12:53 PM
different shows obviously but the same levels of over the top violence and sex, but it's a blast.

I'm guessing there will be no season 3 but i hope there will be.
13414940, Episode 9...haven't had that much fun since the early Spartacus seasons

I’m sure there are deeper Marvel tie-ins but the light ones I do catch are pleasing enough.

I got about 10 minutes into the new Borat before tapping out.
13415243, hbo max is my 2nd favorite streaming service (to netflix).
Posted by Reeq, Thu Dec-03-20 03:34 AM
i dont like the design of the site (i watch on desktop/chrome)...but i use an extension to force 1080p and res netflix style ui while viewing. and that helps. i wish it was straight dark mode/theme and more intuitive like netflix tho.

but ive spent like the last week and a half just tethered to this shit fam. docs upon docs. watching mad older movies (which i usually dont even care about on other services). and they got a lot more hot shit dropping soon.

they screwed the rollout up but i think more people are gonna get attracted by the content as time goes on.

(i get it for free since i already have fios/hbo so maybe the helps lol)

13415337, all warner bros 2021 films will be released simultaneously on hbo max.

firestick didn’t have hbomax when it first started and then I checked again after telling my sister it was the only drawback of the firestick.

i wont pay for it but i will probably do a binge month or 2 every year.

honestly, im about to cancel apple plus cause their content is ass.
13415346, I resisted Good Lord Bird but its worth watching.
Posted by Buddy_Gilapagos, Thu Dec-03-20 03:54 PM
Didn't think I wanted to see a white savior slavery series. I didn't think I felt like a somber slavery series in general.

But damn if they don't address the white savior thing from the top (spoiler not spoiler: John Brown was crazy as hell and the black people knew it).

It also has a lot more humor than I thought would be permissible in such a story.

And Ethan Hawke is killer in it. Like really good.

They on Voices of Fire doin reverse affirmative action with some of them picks lmao. I'm like c'mon you niggas know good and gotdamn well them wasn't the best singers to do the solos. They gotta keep the white audience happy tho I guess, but that shit kinda ruined the show highkey. Some really good singers got totally screwed. Other than that, it was entertaining and rather fun to watch.

I LOVED this. Watched the first couple episodes with just the subtitles but then I switched to the English dub. Might rewatch with subtitles before part 2 comes out.

Also saw a few people on twitter talking about the lack of Black woman and I....that did not even cross my mind? In my head I was just like it's Europe that's what they do but maybe that's my bad
13420601, Been ripping through Better Call Saul
Posted by sectachrome86, Fri Jan-15-21 04:15 PM
Its pretty great but I'm a little disappointed how it has basically just devolved into Breaking Bad in the last season. Maybe thats whats supposed to happen as a prequel nears the end though.

Gonna start Your Honor next.
13420606, I am watching Oz for the very first time ever.

Naomi's story is so solid.

Amos is really that dude. Now I know why nothing gets to him and why he has a vague ambisexual vibe.

Camina Drummer has become one of my fave characters. I didnt like her until I realized she was exactly like Naomi. They are both scrappy, smart and worked hard to get where they are.

The new president...hes getting his footing, but I feel like dude is hiding his darker intentions. He seems like he would have no problem bringing smoke to the belt.

13420721, america's test kitchen
Posted by bearfield, Sun Jan-17-21 03:43 AM
i was in a recipe rut and i love their equipment review videos on youtube so i signed up for a subscription. i'm hoping it will help me become a better home cook

their style is mostly technique and has kind of a clinical vibe to it but there is some solid stuff in the archives. there is a little whitewashing of recipes from other cuisines but generally they try to make it as authentic as possible. their recipes for western dishes are usually very good and they make something as complex as breaking down and roasting a whole beef tenderloin look achieveable for the average to advanced amateur cook

presentation-wise the recorded segments are kind of bizarre and almost anachronistic; cuts to a live audience during taste testing segments, 95% white hosts clearly appealing to a certain base (might have something to do with being in boston), and a calculated warm vibe that toes the line of sincere and disingenuous. every part that isn't explaining the recipe or why vegetable peeler x is way better than vegetable peeler y is usually pretty bad but you learn to ignore or skip it. the recipe demonstrations are easy to follow and are well shot, edited, and written. i do really enjoy when the host genuinely loves the dish that the presenting cook makes. i also love it when the recipe turns out to be trash and the host has to pretend that it's good!

I can only do 2 or 3 episodes at a time. I had to tap out for a whole season after the episode where Randalls bio dad passed away.

These writers are amazing.

Beth and Randall.. Randall’s story about her mother, Black therapist, man listen...

13421237, It's a weird season
Posted by double negative, Fri Jan-22-21 10:13 AM
maybe it's because everyone is going through a lot of internal change and previous seasons were about leading up to deep & impactful moments of learning and change, big questions were still open. now that those questions have been answered, Randall, Kev and Angry are going inside for change and figuring out what sort of lives they want to live.

I like both of these movies and I like that 2 stands on it's own while still having a connection to the first one. I actually saw 2 a year ago prior to watching the first one and enjoyed it. It made me want to find the first one and watch.
13421438, i just found a pretty neat trick watching video on chrome.
Posted by Reeq, Sun Jan-24-21 08:00 PM
if you use one of the volume booster extensions...and boost the volume at least one level you can click on the 'full screen' button on any video and it only takes up the full window. (you can lower it back down to normal using the volume slider on the video player if you want)

this is cool if you watch videos while you do stuff in other windows (or just want a viewing area smaller than the entire screen). now you can watch the video without a bunch of other page elements distracting from the experience (some sites already do this obviously).

a lot of sites have the 1st season as the best season too. i dont even wanna know what a season below this level looks like.

Crazy tripped out show. Came out 2020. On time with what is going on right now with this whole pandemic. None of it is true but does go down the rabbit hole (pun intended) of conspiracies.

A bit violent but worth checking out.
