13353057, We Watching Watchmen?

I haven’t seen it yet but I’m hearing they touched on Black Wall St.

Of course white folks are so surprised they knew nothing about it.

i need to see more of this story because Watchmen was not told from the side of the oppressed.

are we mining black pain for white entertainment?

America has imported more warlord theocracy from Afghanistan than it has exported democracy.
13353100, are they mining Black experiences for Black viewers?

cause I had no interest in this show until I heard about the first episode. The trailers didn’t do anything for me.

Didn’t like the movie.

Never followed or even heard of the comic before the movie came out.

13353603, Yeah, I think it's too early to call this clearly progressive
Posted by Buddy_Gilapagos, Sun Oct-27-19 06:38 PM
The comic wasnt.

So far in the series the villain is shaping up to be a survivor of the Tulsa Massacre. The hero is a law-breaking, but state-sanctioned, vigilante cop who tortures to get results. The Panda who attempts to enforce civil rights is a hated bureaucrat.

Let's wait and see.

My dude...

How did you feel watching the reveal from the most recent episode?
13353753, Re: Her husband
Posted by Hitokiri, Tue Oct-29-19 08:18 AM
Did he save her? She was on the ground, shot in the gut with that Calvary member standing over her with his gun pointed at her face... then she woke up in the hospital. So, either her husband saved her, someone else saved her, or the White Night was a part of the grand conspiracy and they left her alive on purpose. Right?
13354283, I think it’s the last one. It doesn’t feel right.

Questlove's Finding Your Roots Appearance Directly Influenced a Storyline on Watchmen
Showrunner Damon Lindelof explained on HBO's official Watchmen podcast.

https://www.menshealth.com/entertainment/a29741106/questlove-watchmen-finding-your-roots/

Here's a decent bet: you probably wouldn't expect one of the most popular musicians in America to directly influence a high-concept HBO comic book show. But on the official Watchmen podcast, Damon Lindelof recounted how Questlove—drummer for The Roots and star of The Tonight Show—influenced key concepts that made it directly into the new series.

Lindelof says he's "obsessed" with the show Finding Your Roots, where Henry Louis Gates (who appears in a cameo on Watchmen as a fictionalized version of himself serving as the U.S. Secretary of Treasury) helps celebrities learn more about their heritage.

Lindelof recalls the episode vividly, particularly the moment Gates reveals to Questlove that his distant ancestors came to America on the last ship carrying slaves. He tells Questlove where they landed, where they settled, and more.

"As he's telling the story, Questlove starts to have this incredibly emotional reaction," Lindelof say. "He says 'I feel like I know who I am.'" (His quote verbatim, as you can see in the video below, is "Until an hour ago, I didn't know who I was.")

Lindelof, who is part-Ashkenazi Jewish, had ancestors who survived World War II, which profoundly impacted how he viewed himself growing up. He told Variety his grandparents' survival “resulted in me."

He continues on the podcast:

"That's not something that I could really relate to, as a white person, as it pertains to the last 400 years of history in America that was visited upon people who were brought here to this country and enslaved, and all the treasure of this country was basically born upon their backs.
That said, I understand the idea of knowing who I am based on understanding the trials and tribulations and trauma visited upon my grandparents. So, hearing that my grandparents just got out of Russia right before they would've been shipped off to concentration camps actually creates an emotional reaction in me, and suddenly I feel like that's a piece of the puzzle of who I am, even though this person died 20 years before I was born. Suddenly, I was like that feels very Watchmen to me."
This observation translates directly to the second episode of Watchmen, when the mysterious, wheelchair-bound Will Reeves tells Regina King's Angela Abar his intent: "I came to tell you who you are."

We haven't gotten a ton of answers yet as to what Will meant by who Angela is, but just the mere fact that she now knows that they're related is a start, and represents a path toward the sort of enlightenment that Lindelof describes, and that he witnessed Questlove experience.

"This is something that I feel like all of us as humans are striving to do—we want to understand who we are, and why we do the things we do, and why we feel anxious and scared, and it's hard for us to separate what was inherited—what came from our parents, and their parents before them, and what was unique to us," he said. "And you need to know who you are before you can separate those things out."

To hear the full conversation between Lindelof and Chernobyl creator Craig Mazin, you can listen to the Watchmen podcast below. The Finding Your Roots conversation begins at 23:45.

This was an excellent episode. We got some Looking Glass backstory. We found out what's happening with the 7th Kavalary. We found out WTF Veidt was trying to do. It was the episode most directly links to the source material.

13356280, My wife asked if the races out reversed on the show
Posted by legsdiamond, Mon Nov-18-19 11:31 AM
Only thing I could answer with is “ionno”

Cause I really have no idea wtf is going on when it comes to the cops, terrorist and race relations.

I tried to tell my wife one scene was clones but it was too late. She was horrified.

What’s crazy is she can watch WestWorld without flinching but it’s because she kinda knows what’s going on. With this show, it’s all new even though we watched the movie when it came out.

13356523, I convinced my wife to start reading the Watchmen comic.

Posted by rdhull, Wed Nov-20-19 12:58 PM
If youve read it, a quik synopsis could be enough..maybe letting in on that its back in 1985 it was a different world where superheroes were part of american history and one of them was a Dr Manhattan ended up being one with the power of the universe y a freak accident, Nixon won several terms of presidency, the world was on the brink of nuclear war but one of the superheroes (Veidt) created a super squid and psychic nuclear blast on NY that included a giant squid as an attack to bring the world together.

until it was literally spelled out on twitter. That level of writing is beyond wild. I have to imagine it took a long time to fully build the world the show is based upon.
13357294, Wasn’t a fan of dude getting played like that
Posted by legsdiamond, Tue Nov-26-19 08:07 AM
but the get back was on point.

When he put one in dudes head like I was telling him to do I was all for it

I’m still confused how the TV show has him as a white dude.
13357302, The TV show within the series?
Posted by Hitokiri, Tue Nov-26-19 09:24 AM
Because white is the default. HJ's identity was never revealed, so white folks are just gonna assume that a 'hero' is white.
13357332, ahhh. That makes sense.
Posted by legsdiamond, Tue Nov-26-19 11:11 AM
I think I was a bit confused because a few episodes back they shows Glass Mask watching a the white hero get rammed. I didn’t realize it was an actual show the first time around. I thought Glass Mask was watching some intel or a black mail tape of some colleagues.

That’s a wild ass show if they show all that on TV... it must be cable.

you still cumming over tho right?
13357337, The movie sucked, so my expectations were very low for this one.
Posted by Cam, Tue Nov-26-19 11:20 AM
Regina King is the only reason I even gave the show a chance.
I thought this year's Joker movie was the best a super hero origin story could get...and this show surpasses that cinematic excellence.

Definitely a television pinnacle, every episode is amazingly better than last week's.

I re-watched ep.6 and suddenly noticed how amazing King is in the role. She physically takes on the mannerisms and expressions of her grandfather, while overdosing on that nostalgia narcotic.

Hoteps just mad to be mad, they're still angry and dismissive over the late great Manning Marabel because of his Malcolm X biography, for this very reason. But what a clever tie, perhaps to that. Definitely to the actual graphic novel, there was an inferred sexual relationship between the two, if I remember correctly.
13357340, I have to go back and read the comic.
Posted by Buddy_Gilapagos, Tue Nov-26-19 11:27 AM
I have to see if there were any suggestions that he was black.

13357352, My memory is way off
Posted by Numba_33, Tue Nov-26-19 12:05 PM
because it's been a while since I read the original material, but I remember that character being very minor. I think the majority of the info for him derived from the supplemental material tacked on either at the end of each chapter or placed on the edges of the comic frames.
13357406, Go listen to the most recent episode of The Nod podcast.
Posted by PROMO, Tue Nov-26-19 03:36 PM
it's about The Watchmen and it features the show's writer (along w/ Lindelof), Cord Jefferson.

How did she end up in the Asian woman’s care?

Who are the good guys?
13357537, Angela was arrested, and thrown in a cell
Posted by bigkarma, Wed Nov-27-19 07:56 PM
But once Angela started tripping balls, and Agent Blake couldn't get through to her, Blake probably turned her over to Lady Trieu. Trieu's company (or Veidt's) probably created the Nostalgia drug, plus she was the one supplying it to Lou Gossett.

13357657, It's funny how they played on racial tropes to interesting effects.
Posted by Buddy_Gilapagos, Mon Dec-02-19 10:31 AM
Like I always thought it was strange that she had this black docile husband having no problem raising white kids. He just seemed like no other brother I'd ever seen. I thought it was just poor characterization. Turns out he was suppose to be that way.

I also thought it was Angela was just playing a no nonsense sister girl with attitude who had no interest in "saving the world" or figuring out who the Dr. Manhattan was living in Tulsa. Turns out sh was playing a part to hide what she knew.

how 7th kalvary develop that portal from last ep? theyre mostly idiots. with trap doors

the storytelling is crazy on this jawn
-whitewashing history/black achievements
-movies and tv "mesmerizing" folks (but reeves/HJ making a portable one was dope lol)
-cyclops using the same "ok" wp hand signal
-folk taking nostalgia to revisit their trauma (message!)
-ozy and the fetus lake and roasting clones in the air fryer is wild. the timeline aint lining up but probably by the last ep his story will catch up with the 2019 earth storyline

The wife of the police chief tho.. with that bunk ass trap door. Shit had me rollin’

Makes me believe the portal won’t work if they ca t eve get a trap door to work.

The thing that trips me out but also is spot on is the wife being a POS. One thing that was pointed out about Trump and all these butt hurt white dudes is they were all raised by women to be this way. So anytime people try to use the WW as a sympathetic figure... nope.
13358620, This may go down as one of the greatest single seasons of television
Posted by Hitokiri, Sun Dec-08-19 11:12 PM
If they stick the landing next week. Maybe even if they don't.
13358621, they did so much so well this episode
Posted by navajo joe, Sun Dec-08-19 11:18 PM
that I believe they'll pull it off.

This show is just an absolute gift.
13358623, yeah i have no more doubts. this episode sealed it.
Posted by BrooklynWHAT, Mon Dec-09-19 12:55 AM
13358628, I agree! I hope they can land it!

13358631, I'm sure the answer is "So the show could happen" but,
Posted by JFrost1117, Mon Dec-09-19 08:08 AM
Why did they relax?

This probably has the same answer, but since 1985, has Doc not looked into his vulnerability to/inability to maneuver through tachyon fields? If that's what made him blind to the "Squid" attack, you'd think he'd put some research time into figuring it out.
13358646, Mr. Manhattan doesn't really travel through time.
Posted by Buddy_Gilapagos, Mon Dec-09-19 10:23 AM
Like he doesn't change history, he just knows what's going to happen because he is experiencing it all at once. Or maybeit's the type of time travel they use in End Game (probably wrong about this).

I know doesn't completely work because they seemed to change history by Angela asking her dad about the old cop but maybe that wasn't changing history but always meant to happen?

IDK, can't scrutinize time storylines too much or you go screwy or it falls apart.

13358789, Nah, I get that.
Posted by JFrost1117, Mon Dec-09-19 10:53 PM
I mean, if Veidt says (roughly) this tachyon ring can short out your powers or if John himself can say (roughly) that tachyons are the source of him not being able to experience chunks of time because they blind him some kinda way, why doesn’t he develop a way to see through them?

It’s rhetorical mostly, because I’m sure it’s meant to be his kryptonite.
13358791, i dont recall the film too well
Posted by Riot, Mon Dec-09-19 11:18 PM
or the details of what happened in 1985,

but in the current timeline he becomes aware of the ring and how it works and then he cant see anything until after the tunnel.

he doesnt build a counter for the particles because yes, PLOT ARMOR, but in the story its because he needed to be taking a risk

ie that fav science fiction trope of "he did it for love"(c)rkelly (c)neo in the matrix (c)star wars, etc
13358810, right, there is also the basic human assumption he wants to live
Posted by Buddy_Gilapagos, Tue Dec-10-19 10:58 AM
or not die. but that dude is so next level I can see him not seeing a difference and not really caring the way humans do.

13358927, I agree with this
Posted by Hitokiri, Tue Dec-10-19 09:36 PM
Or taking a slight step back I don't see any reason to believe he necessarily wants his powers, or doesn't want them. No reason to believe that he cares that there's a limit to his power or that he should be looking for a solution to his weakness.
13358648, I got a prediction for Europa.
Posted by Buddy_Gilapagos, Mon Dec-09-19 10:26 AM
I think what Veidt realizes Europa needs is for those people to have free will and/or a devil to make their world actually worthwhile. Something like that but they are going to set that world to be on course to be more like our world.

13358817, so i jumped in without having read the graphic novel
Posted by dapitts08, Tue Dec-10-19 11:54 AM
or watched the movie. or even heard of them to be completely honest lol

anddddd i am so glad i did.

there were so many oh sh$t moments for me without having the same context as folks who knew the premise and characters.

and now i get to read the graphic novel and come back and rewatch to have all those oh shit moments over again as i make more connections. i can't wait. lol

also if you haven't listened to the official watchmen podcast, it is def worth checking it out.

13358820, GG snub. Figures
Posted by rdhull, Tue Dec-10-19 12:11 PM
The HFP probably dont get that context of the graphic novel is paramount to get whats going on regardles of the quality of the writing, performances, etc.
13358929, I'm fairly confident it wasn't a snub, it just premiered too late.
Posted by Frank Longo, Wed Dec-11-19 12:57 AM
13359035, A Marriage Story got nominated and its premier was last week
Posted by rdhull, Wed Dec-11-19 03:18 PM
Unless they did sme screening prior to when Watchmen premiered on HBO 8 weeks ago.

Not sure how accurate the HFP ar with these things though
13359036, They've been screening A Marriage Story since August
Posted by mrhood75, Wed Dec-11-19 03:26 PM
It did the film festival circuit during the late summer/early fall. And I'm pretty sure it's been screened for others since then.
13359048, Ok, so like I said then, maybe it is timing then
Posted by rdhull, Wed Dec-11-19 03:53 PM
>It did the film festival circuit during the late summer/early

13358992, Nah.. this has to be timing.
Posted by legsdiamond, Wed Dec-11-19 12:55 PM
I haven’t read the novel and that has been entertaining as hell and the acting is fantastic.

I don’t care for the award shows so it doesn’t matter to me.
13359013, Ioknow. it's being reported as a snub.

Posted by legsdiamond, Wed Dec-11-19 02:36 PM
Dude from When They See Us snubbed too.

13359440, NO love for When They See Us?!?!? Man, fuck the Golden Globes.
Posted by PROMO, Mon Dec-16-19 12:42 PM
13359431, This is the best comic book TV/movie ever
Posted by BrooklynWHAT, Mon Dec-16-19 12:10 PM
13359444, so, is this a stand alone season of TV, or is there more?
Posted by PROMO, Mon Dec-16-19 12:50 PM
13359486, totally self-contained story
Posted by BrooklynWHAT, Mon Dec-16-19 02:30 PM
Lindelof said they might do another one if he has another good idea but for right now this is it.
13359508, I hope they leave it alone...
Posted by legsdiamond, Mon Dec-16-19 03:42 PM
but if they do revisit it, maybe tell the story of another character before 2019.

13359550, Impeccable.
Posted by Cold Truth, Mon Dec-16-19 06:06 PM
I need another season though.

Follow this story and expand this universe. I have full confidence in this team to hit another home run season or two.

I don't want an 8 season saga, but 3-4 seasons in total? I think they can nail it.
13359552, loved it. would watch another. not at all mad if there isn't.
Posted by PG, Mon Dec-16-19 06:28 PM
that was a hell of a series... needs no more... but dammed if I wouldn't watch more.
13359556, read the comic, loved the movie, the squid confused me initially
Posted by seasoned vet, Mon Dec-16-19 07:20 PM
i had forgotten that they switched out the squid in the comics to Dr. Manhattan in the movie

so naturally if you’re watching with the mind that the show is a continuation of the movie its gon have you all fucked up

that said, while i like it i can see why most in our culture cant mentally digest it
