13352973, Why do suit jackets have multiple buttons if you only use one?
Posted by flipnile, Tue Oct-22-19 03:10 PM
Make no fucking sense. If it's a style thing, then why not design the jacket to look good with all the buttons buttoned? Or sell jackets with only one button?

Shit like this is why I'll never be a dandy. Don't make no sense.
13352976, more a preference thing
Posted by tariqhu, Tue Oct-22-19 03:34 PM
I think it looks cooler with the last button not buttoned, depending on the suit.

have more than one button lets me decide how many I need to do.
13352980, Is it?
Posted by sectachrome86, Tue Oct-22-19 03:45 PM
As far as I know never buttoning the last button is fashion law.
13352985, It’s cringeworthy when someone buttons the button one

13353246, Very first suit I got fitted for, I immediately buttoned the bottom
Posted by flipnile, Thu Oct-24-19 01:34 PM
And immediately got scolded by the tailor about never buttoning the bottom button.

First thing I thought was "why did I buy a two-button suit if I only use one?"

Posted by WarriorPoet415, Thu Oct-24-19 11:47 AM
just like Big Pharma.

I mean, not only do suit jackets have that extra button in the front, but what about those four buttons on the sleeve, hmmm?

We NEVER button sleeves.

What about shirts that aren't designed/intended to be worn with ties, like polo shirts? They have top buttons too.

What about all those extra buttons they produce and included in that little plastic pouch?

The extra two buttons on the tail of your dress shirt for "just in case"?

What about trousers that have that inside button for you to fasten, EVEN THOUGH THERE IS A ZIPPER!!!!!

Wake up my people! The Button Lobby has been inflating the cost of garments and making people uncomfortable for decades!

They got to Michael Jackson! (Rember them Sgt. Pepper ass jackets?)
They got to Steve Harvey!
They got to southern black Black Preachers!
They funded breast reduction research to stop button loss due to big jammers resurgence!
They have actively been waging a cold war with the spandex and jeggings industry!
They will cede no more ground to the sweatpants industry! They're bringing down Lululemon from the inside!
Who the fuck you think started that button down collar on dress shirts bullshit? Them niggas got something against Big Starch?

You think I'm joking? When the last time you seen velcro my nigga, HENH????????

Don't even get me started on the Bay of Cufflinks incident. I got a FOIA request in on that.

And you know who started that shit? You know who's behind Big Button?

Grandmothers.

Grandmothers across the land, white and black, old and older to old as dust sitting on their stocks of buttons in blue cookie tins and no way to move them. So they got to work. Insidious bitches.

All this shit is a conspiracy my nigga.

13353237, just came here to say
Posted by kevb, Thu Oct-24-19 01:20 PM
fuck a suit.

i hope to never have to wear one ever in life.
13353242, You've never worn a suit ?
Posted by Brew, Thu Oct-24-19 01:27 PM
For the record, I hate wearing that type of shit too. Never looks right on me no matter how well its tailored, and IMO there's not a single thing more uncomfortable in the world (at least in terms of mundane, everyday things) than tucking in a fucking shirt.
13353247, I just bought a new suit... from the thrift shop
Posted by flipnile, Thu Oct-24-19 01:37 PM
Got tired of people nagging me about wearing a jacket to certain events (didn't own a jacket or suit), so I went and spent $22 and grabbed a nice blue 2 button one. Literally the second suit I've owned in life.

Anyway, I like everything about suits except for the jacket. Just never liked those, and have avoided wearing one for years.

Now, I'm in a new world trying to figure out pocket squares, lapel pins, cuff links, etc.
13353250, LOL yea - for a while I owned only an ill-fitting black suit ...

w/one shirt and one tie. The shirt and tie combo was dope but the suit looked like total shit.

In the last 5+ years the wife and I have been to approximately 65,000 weddings, including our own, and I was also part of the wedding party in several of those ... so I now own 4 suits and similarly, I started getting into matching socks w/pocket squares and that sort of shit. Also made sure to get all the new suits (after my shitty black one) tailored appropriately so they look as tight as possible.

In the past 2 years I became a vest guy. like I said in a post above, I loathe tucking in shirts for a million reasons, one of which being that I have absolutely no ass and as a result my midsection is all out of whack no matter how good of shape I am in; so even when I wear "slim fit" shirts the material is *everywhere* in the back (at least to my eyes) ... vests take care of that problem for me by hiding all the extra material. Plus I think a 3 piece suit just looks tight as hell in general. I get a lot of compliments on them.

So yea like I said in that other post I am not a fan at all of formal gear but, since I've had to wear it so much over the last few years I've gotten more creative and made it work so I hate it less. Haha.
13353241, If we're talking about practical utility/purpose, then none of the
Posted by soulfunk, Thu Oct-24-19 01:26 PM
rules/customs for formal fashion are logical. But for something like this, my guess is it goes back to the history of suits from centuries ago - probably something to do with riding horses while wearing a suit needing the bottom button open. I know that the custom of vents in suit jackets came from horse riding so I'm just guessing on the buttons.
13353243, Yea there's definitely some old school functionality to it. Jeans ...
Posted by Brew, Thu Oct-24-19 01:28 PM
... do that, too. Bunch of little parts of jeans we hardly notice that served historic purposes but have no use today .. but are still there.
13353248, Word. I remember reading that ties evolved from scarves...
Posted by flipnile, Thu Oct-24-19 01:42 PM
I read this article about suit buttons: https://www.insider.com/suit-button-rules-bottom-top-2017-3

Seems like there's no clear consensus.

Also, one button jackets seem like a (rare) thing: https://thesharpgentleman.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/02/one_button.png

Might see if I can get one of these if I ever get a new suit. Looks clean.
13353251, How bout double breasted suits
Posted by Brew, Thu Oct-24-19 01:55 PM
I remember Snoop rocked them all the time in the Doggfather days (apparently still does via quick google search) ... here's all I could find on a quick search, w/Suge rocking the doub-breast:

https://www.gettyimages.com/detail/news-photo/snoop-dogg-suge-knight-and-tupac-shakur-news-photo/582957092
