13352178, driver is deaf
Posted by mista k5, Wed Oct-16-19 11:17 AM
saw this sticker on a van yesterday. it confused me. i never considered that deaf or hard at hearing people needed special consideration for driving. made me google it. i guess it makes sense to alert other drivers or police officers that the person driving is deaf so theyre not clueless as to why the driver isnt possibly responding to audio signals.

it also touched on not hearing an ambulance approaching but honestly most of the time i dont hear one over the radio. noticing other cars slowing down or pulling over is usually enough of a signal to look out. looks like they do also sell devices that can give the driver visual signals for such situations but theyre not necessary.

it was interesting to look this up.

that said, i was stopped behind this driver and when the light turned green they took a while to start driving. i considered pressing my horn but...well thats not really my style and then i remembered the sticker lol. to be clear i dont think the slow start had anything to do with being able to hear. i have no issue with deaf people being allowed to drive. just a the more you know moment.

13352198, I sent a proposal and haven’t heard back from them

I think I may have come in too high (for them) or maybe I didn’t give them enough options.

I just gave them one price for a decent amount of rebranding items.

It’s a fair price tho...

Not giving away work anymore. I have to design a button this evening.

13352253, Stick your value. If it's too high for them, they aren't the right clients for you.

I spent 2 years recovering from undervaluing my work....
And I'm going to spend the next year cushioning my fee too....

13352275, Definitely. Took years to realize this.

Learned the hard way from doing websites for people. I charge based-on the time it takes me to complete a project, so when folks balk it's like they don't give a fuck about the value of my time. Pissed me off so much I completely stopped doing freelance web work. Just wasn't worth it compared to what I make at my day job (comparing hourly rates). Rather keep that free time to work on my own side projects.

13352215, one of my thesis committee members is not responding...
Posted by akon, Wed Oct-16-19 12:17 PM
to emails.
im supposed to meet each of them prior to my defense so i get a sense of what their concerns are
met my committee chair yesterday... he's concerned about this
my advisor is furious
im.... disappointed
its the only woman member and i selected her specifically
i was hoping she would give me extensive feedback since she's the only demographer
on the team
so far its been crickets
i was hoping i'd count on her when i am standing in front of the committee responding to questions.
im really really disappointed.
anyway... still need to prepare my public defense seminar.
i hope this will all soon be over.

ugh
13352254, I hate the term ally.
Posted by MEAT, Wed Oct-16-19 01:30 PM
It feels like a catch all cop out. It’s just a label. I’m at a strange point in life driven by a number of things that I need a verb as opposed to a noun. Are you a person that agrees with, encourages, stands with, fights for ... etc. Ally allows a person to just obfuscate all of that under a general understanding that an ally isn’t an enemy. But there are times when passive silence aides the enemy, are they in allyship at those times?
13352256, yeah.... apathetic sympathizers
Posted by PG, Wed Oct-16-19 01:35 PM
... I was just having this thought last week. we all do it for various things... it's weak.
13352263, Like I personally sympathize with a number of causes but I’m no ally

I don’t sacrifice a damn thing in those fights.
