13350078, Whatever happened to the word wigger?

I haven’t heard it in at least 15 years.

13350081, "distillation" ..... is THAT what it's being called now? ok....

"Get ready....for your blessing....."
"Bury me by my Grand-Grand and when you can come follow me"
13350084, it was just the first word that came to mind for me.

distillation, homogenization, etc.
13350085, I think a combo of this and it not being PC
Posted by sectachrome86, Tue Oct-01-19 10:36 AM
I was just thinking about this because I was watching season 2 of The Wire where there was the group of white kids calling each other the n word and wearing durags and South Pole. Nick Sobotka calls one of them a wigger. It definitely seemed like snapshot in time.
13350082, I've ALWAYS hated that term because of what it suggests.
Posted by double negative, Tue Oct-01-19 10:33 AM
at the end of the day its really about calling black people niggers.

"oh you think you black? you acting black. you acting like a white nigger because this is how black people act and black people are the niggers"
13350086, Agreed 100%

Only realizing I hadn’t heard it in forever when just now listening to an old stand up from a white comedian. “That’s a word I haven’t heard in a while”.
13350121, ya growing up in the 90's people were quick to use it
Posted by GriftyMcgrift, Tue Oct-01-19 12:44 PM
it always made me feel uncomfortable as fuck and highly disrespectful to black folks so i stayed away from it
13350227, So white folks aren’t niggers?

Given the original meaning of the word it fits them more than it would black people.

13350269, I'm not sure I understand

13350278, I don’t why it’s hard for you to understand.

The word nigger means lack of intelligence; ignorant.

This does not exclude any ethnicity. If anyone is a nigger in the truest sense of the word, it would be white people. White people have continued to me remain ignorant and lack intelligence regarding black people and other ethnicities to this day.

13350288, You completely overlooked the historical racial aspect of the word...
Posted by Marbles, Wed Oct-02-19 11:45 AM
Are you really trying to say that there's not a racial component to the word "nigger?"
13350353, And you’re overlooking the true definition of that word.
Posted by hip bopper, Wed Oct-02-19 03:13 PM
> Are you really trying to say that there's not a racial

What I am saying is that the nigger as originally intended was NOT meant for a specific ethnicity. That label was put put on black people, but that was not the real meaning. As I originally stated, it was a term used for ignorance and lack of intelligence. Who has been more deserving of that word than white folks? They were the ones that lacked the intelligence. They were the ones who were ignorant. Trust and believe there are several white folks that are niggers.

13350371, Ah right. I see where you're going with it.
Posted by double negative, Wed Oct-02-19 03:56 PM
I wanted to give you the benefit of doubt before I assumed anything.

I mean, I hear your opinion but its stated in a vacuum. The meaning of words and how we use words shifts over time. Language is a living thing. So, while you're not wrong about the definition of the word you've also completely trimmed off the rest of the meaning/associations

My main point (which is not opinion) is that blacks have allowed this to go on without confronting who the real niggers are. We have accepted whatever people have done to us. I have not trimmed off the rest of the meaning or association. So if I’m not wrong about the definition of the word, then I’m not wrong to whom that term really applies. True meanings change over time, but you will never get me to believe that nigger is solely meant for black people.

13350390, You do know its a bastardization of the spanish/portuguese "negro" right?

yikes.
Please break down the etymology of the word "nigger" then.
13350406, I already did that, you just didn’t get it.
Posted by hip bopper, Wed Oct-02-19 05:19 PM

13350422, No, you didn't.
Posted by Hitokiri, Wed Oct-02-19 05:42 PM
An etymology looks something like this

idiot (n.)
early 14c., "person so mentally deficient as to be incapable of ordinary reasoning;" also in Middle English "simple man, uneducated person, layman" (late 14c.), from Old French idiote "uneducated or ignorant person" (12c.), from Latin idiota "ordinary person, layman; outsider," in Late Latin "uneducated or ignorant person," from Greek idiotes "layman, person lacking professional skill" (opposed to writer, soldier, skilled workman), literally "private person" (as opposed to one taking part in public affairs), used patronizingly for "ignorant person," from idios "one's own" (see idiom).

Posted by Lurkmode, Tue Oct-15-19 10:06 AM
Aziz did a bit where talked about how it was a bad look, for a politician and others
who caused controversy, by using a word based on it's original definition, to use that word when they didn't it.

https://www.businessinsider.com/ohio-senator-used-the-word-niggardly-to-denounce-his-colleagues-2012-3
13351994, So the $1M question is...
Posted by hip bopper, Tue Oct-15-19 11:49 AM
were they acting niggardly? This would include white folks since we are speaking about the Ohio Senate.

13352007, Even if they were it's unnecessary to use that word
Posted by Lurkmode, Tue Oct-15-19 12:27 PM

to describe what they are doing.
13352008, How so?

It's a distraction.
13350389, I'm not sure where you got that from...
Posted by Marbles, Wed Oct-02-19 04:31 PM

Yeah, I'm fairly certain that "nigger" was derived from other languages (mostly European) & their word for "black."

I'm not sure where this idea came from that it was just a shot at ignorant people. Like someone else said, that's an excuse that I've heard white folks use when they throw it out at someone and get called out for it.

13350397, You need to check the original definition of the word...
Posted by hip bopper, Wed Oct-02-19 04:47 PM
Holla at me when you do. The only thing I’m certain about is that you don’t know the real meaning. Of course is was put on black people, but that was NOT the original meaning.

And this is what we say when we don’t grasp the true meaning of that word.

13350700, Redneck connotes ignorance as well

But would the average person use nigger and redneck interchangeably?

No, because they're both racialized. Nigger connotes black ignorance (and often black, in general) while redneck connotes rural white ignorance.

So I get the attempt to de-racialize the word but I think it's a lost cause bc its inextricably been linked to black people by hundreds of years of use.
13351942, That is only by our acceptance though
Posted by hip bopper, Tue Oct-15-19 08:30 AM
Blacks in their cowardice let that term define who they were, when in reality we were never that.

It's no surprise to see you trotting out an argument from definition fallacy and sidestepping every bit of context and nuance in a discussion. It's alarming to see you doing that shit on this particular subject, but hey.... at least you're consistent, I suppose.

When white people get called out for calling a black person that word, they do exactly what you just did, in a poor attempt to intellectualize, and therefore justify, their use of the word as an epithet towards black people.

What it "really" means doesn't magically remove the historical context of the word. Leaning on what it "really" means is is to ignore the actual usage.

But yeah... great job showing that you're a colossal fuckwit across the board.
13351943, The No. 1 dummy has decided to chime in!!!!

It’s no surprise that you remain utterly stupid without looking at the origin of things. It’s alarming on your behalf that you do no research and are blind and misguided about all things. Yet you make posts like you’re actually intelligent.

So me saying what the word really meant versus people who who misuse the word for their benefit is the same? How dumb are you really? You are the typical person that they have in bondage to this day. Another dumb and blind individual.

13350749, yep. that word was always bullshit for that exact reasoning

from white people it was just a blanket term for white kids who "acted black" such as listening to rap, speaking with a black affectation, dressing in hip-hop style or whatever combination of those types of things.

for black people it was the same but generally used for those who they didn't accept. it was rare to see a kid who comfortably hung out with black people described that way.
13352089, This is fairly accurate.

I can imagine some Asians or Latinos using it against their own. I stress the word, "some."

Like you, I've never heard a black person use it as an attack on another brother/sister. That's part of what made it so nuts when Clayton Bigsby said it.
