and people who know better (in the political press) need to stop regurgitating it.
in the midterms immediately following clintons impeachment...repubs held the senate with 0 net seat changes. repubs lost a measly 5 seats in the house but still retained control of it.
then they won the white house in 2000 (while using clinton as a weapon against gore. gained the senate in 2002. and kept control of the presidency and both chambers until 2006. they held the house for *12 years* during this time.
if anything...repubs showed impeachment (with even a failed conviction) can be a potent political weapon to strengthen your hand electorally.
