13346802, Why aren't you watching Succession?
Posted by Bambino Grande, Mon Sep-09-19 08:22 AM

Admittedly, it might've been a little hard to get into out the gate, BUT damnit if this second season isn't one of the most entertaining & well-written shows and finest acting on TV right now

13346807, because I'm too busy watching Billions.
Posted by double negative, Mon Sep-09-19 09:35 AM
Kidding, I just finished binging Billions (amazing show)

Sucession is good but I'm finding the show a bit awkward with finding its footing in the first half of the first episode of the new season.

13346827, Its fucking outstanding
Posted by sectachrome86, Mon Sep-09-19 11:34 AM
Like just as a drama its great. But its also one of the funniest shows ever. The way it balances being dead serious and the humor is amazing.

When I first saw the previews for it I thought it looked lame. Didn't start watching until the whole first season was about over already.
13346829, Love this show.
Posted by legsdiamond, Mon Sep-09-19 11:55 AM
This family is a shit show.
13346903, Is it fair to call this show a comedy?

Moreso than drama. But it covers both.

But I think it was pretty clear that it was more comedy after like the 3rd episode of last season, IMO at least. But it does both well.
13346907, Love it!

The show is doing that but also doing a great job making these people the hateable devils that they actually are. Like I have some level of grudging fondness for Tom & Greg, but outside of that I literally loathe everyone on the show, but can't look away. And you just know that these revolting pieces of shit are very accurate portrayals of real life billionaires.
13347876, Tom and Greg are hilarious
Posted by legsdiamond, Tue Sep-17-19 11:31 AM
but they both get on my nerves too.

Gregory. Well, he just umm and uhhhs too much

Soon as they got in that car I was like, yep, know where this is going.

Also became clear by that finale that Shiv might be the worst of them all.

13348000, Shiv is absolutely a terrible person
Posted by spenzalii, Tue Sep-17-19 05:08 PM
As much as I don't like Tom (he's hilarious but I hate those kind of assholes) I feel for him because Shiv has all his manhood in her purse and waves it in front of his face. Strong arming Tom into an open relationship, telling him to his face he doesn't want to know what happened when she had her fun, then cock blocking him at the convention? And that's before the fact that he's getting served up on a platter to have his division cut and Shiv will be holding the knife.

Just wait until Logan leaves her out to dry
13348020, Agree with all of this.
Posted by Brew, Tue Sep-17-19 08:43 PM
I have a hard time feeling bad for Tom because he *is* kind of an asshole, and playing along with all the Logans' bullshit just to get a piece of it himself. So as likable a character as he is, if he were a real human I'd be like "you reap what you sow" know what I mean.

But I definitely get what you're saying ?

pretentious ass limousine liberals. much like the Roys, hardly any exposure to the real world and actual humans, but at least the Roys are somewhat self aware that they're not good people.

Nan's interaction with Rosa, with her fake down to earth act like if she sees her more than a servant, to bringing that roast out was pretty much everything you need to know

Posted by spenzalii, Mon Sep-23-19 10:54 AM
The mom is one cold piece of work. Kendall may end up slitting his wrists in a bathtub in the finale. Logan was all BDE, reminding the kids who still has the power and rubbing their noses in it. Shiv absolutely played herself, but the getback between her and Rhea is going to be epic.

Tom and Greg(ory)? Still comedy. Still don't like Tom, but the looks on his face as he increasingly realizes he's off to the guillotine are great
13348705, The stepmom? Their real mom ain’t shit either.

Posted by sersey, Mon Sep-30-19 10:01 AM
Nah, I think he was stewing on why Logan didn’t give him the overwhelming approval he hoped for when introducing her. He summed it up to her acting like a basic bitch when she had the opportunity to shine in front of Daddy.

Kendall now more than ever is fueled by his dads approval and nothing else. New girl got in the way of that. So he settled on dismissing her in the most callus way possible. Shit was ice cold!
13349917, yup. this is exactly how I saw it as well

The fuck did Kendall think would happen when she met his dad?

She was going to go in depth on some news shit or snark him up?

He set her up to fail.

13349981, the "you talk about your dad a lot" was her first strike
Posted by Mynoriti, Mon Sep-30-19 02:30 PM
i dunno what he was expecting but Kendall has a wire lose. He spent the whole ep trying to convince everyone, and himself he was "ok" because he found someone.

he did her a favor, really. dude's a trainwreck. another week or two and she would've caught on anyway.
13349985, also funny because Kendall used 'awesome' to describe Naomi's shakespere

Posted by Mynoriti, Wed Oct-02-19 11:59 AM
It might be a blessing for her, or she might be a bad actress. The only person impressed by the play was Kendall.

We first got a taste of Willa's writing chops at Mo's funeral. Just like Willa, her cast might just be a bunch of hacks whose only chance at Broadway is some rich idiot pouring money into his girl's terrible play
13350298, Ah not a bad point.

Posted by double negative, Mon Sep-30-19 12:56 PM
might not be this season or the next, but I can see Greg turning out to be stronger and hungrier than the other kids and making some big moves in a big turn of events a way down the road.

Posted by Nodima, Tue Oct-01-19 12:38 AM
He offered that maid's kid $1 million if he could hit a homer in the pilot then tagged him out before he could reach home. He also fast tracked that shuttle launch that exploded just to try and one-up his sister on her wedding day and bought that local soccer club this week basically just to launder some money through the town real quick and take advantage of their fandom for a half-decade or so.

But compared to the others, I guess he hasn't gotten anybody killed yet.

One of the few times my Walkmen fanboyism paid off for me in real life. One of their first albums had a song called "Hang On, Siobhan" and it used to really bother me that he said "Shivonne" in the song. I never thought to look it up until that Saorsie Ronan got buzz from Ladybird a full decade later, but now I get to play the "you uncultured dummy!" card with friends and pretend that's not the case!

Rhea is so full of shit. I don't blame her for dipping out, but her whole act like she though Logan was anything other than was a complete trash human. FOH, lady.

Shiv and the second whistleblower was pretty interesting, because as manipulative as she was being, she wasn't really wrong in breaking down what the experience would be like for this woman if she moved forward.

13351960, I'm curious just how big a phenomenon this show could get
Posted by Nodima, Tue Oct-15-19 09:31 AM
I feel like MOST prestige shows hit their stride with viewership around season 4; that's certainly when shows like Breaking Bad and Game of Thrones hit their stride with the public. I'd throw The Wire and Mad Men in there too, but with those shows it was more like they hit their critical mass of hardcore fans at that time than fully broke through to the mainstream/being a cultural phenomenon. I'm sure there's plenty of counter examples but that's my armchair analysis.

The thing that could hold Succession back from getting recognized as the clear successor to Game of Thrones' dialogue + locations + family politics is the same thing that hurt Mad Men for a lot of people - some people just can't get over the fact that they hate the real life versions of these people. You'll never meet a Roose Bolton or a Walder Frey in real life, not totally, but you can read about a Kendall Roy whenever you want. Or, it's like of Game of Thrones was solely from the Lannisters' POV.

Succession is a much faster paced, pageturner of a program than Mad Men, but I could see it eventually stalling out before it hits that total zeitgeist level if its viewership plateaus next season. Hopefully I'm wrong, I want everyone I know to get over the hump and click with this masterpiece.

There's nothing to compare it to that really works.

Its weird that I almost didn't get past the pilot. I was coming fresh off of Billions so comparisons were inevitable even though they're nothing alike. And even though I still love the pop culture reference factory that is Billions, it's about 15% as good as Succession

I cant think of a show running right now I've seen that's better
13351997, I've never seen Billions but I almost didn't get past the pilot either.
Posted by Brew, Tue Oct-15-19 11:56 AM
I knew right away, as I'm sure we all did, that I'd hate every one of these characters with the heat of a trillion suns. Which I do. But the writers do a positively *brilliant* job of making the hatred I have for these people feel entertaining and compelling at the same time. It's hard to put into words but yea - this is the best show on TV right now IMO and I am gonna miss it the next few months.

After being a broken patsy the entire season Kendall finally reclaims his balls and sticks the knife in Logan's back. Going in, you had to figure Ken was the sacrifice (even though Tom should have got the axe for a number of reasons). But once he gave Logan the Judas kiss, it was a wrap. You have to think he's been plotting the whole season, biding his time, but to see him drop the bomb was extremely satisfying. And props to Brian Cox for his portrayal of Logan. The slight smile at the end knowing that, while he's proper fucked, his boy finally became the killer he needed to be was beautiful. S3 is going to be insane.

Shiv really ain't shit. She's a freak, since it's obvious the 3-some was about her and not about Tom, but she ain't shit. She had zero problem with offering Tom up as the sacrifice (and really, he deserves to be fired anyway, but for the purpose of the hearing and shareholder meetings he's not a bog enough fish to fry). Props to Tom for telling her she ain't shit too. The dynamic between them should be interesting next season. Of all the kids, Shiv is probably the most like Logan, but she doesn't quite have the savvy to make the most of her moves. Once she went in to save Tom's ass, she ensured she would never get the chance to run the company.

Connor is such a fuck-up, but great comic relief. How the hell is $100 mil a small hit? Logan took him out quick.

Somehow, Roman comes out looking like the best of the worst here, as he avoided getting killed, did the meeting to get foreign money, and had the balls to tell Logan not to do it. With Gerri on his side he could make a good CEO, and Kendall looked proud of his brother when Logan asked if he could do it. Of course, with Ken blowing everything to hell at the end, who knows how that plays out. Roman is still an psychological mess (obvious mommy issues, sexual hangups, and facing the very real possibility of torture and death will do that to you) but has made intelligent business moves and relationships. He was getting pressed on Gerri but pivoted out of that one nicely, if callously ('Haven't we killed enough women already?' Fantastic line)

Tom still ain't shit either, and I'm in the 'FU Tom' line (mainly because you see those types in business everywhere), but I can't say I'm not feeling a little sorry for him. Business-wise he's been set to take the fall all season. Nobody in the family respects him. His wife definitely doesn't respect him. True, he knew what he was signing up for, and did it in the hopes of money and power, so you get what you get. Still, the scene of Tom and Shiv on the beach was tough. Eating Logan's chicken was hilarious.

13351995, Roman really shined in this ep

His bullshit meter probably saved them from certain doom and his Defense of Gerri (great line I agree) even though it started as personal was actually dead on.

Crazy this ep proved to Logan Kendal is a killer but Shiv is not. As shitty as she is she blew any shot she had at taking the reigns to protect Tom

I can't quite put a finger on how Shiv really feels about Tom. Going to save his job shows she feels something for him, even if she's willing to pimp him out, throw him under the bus, cock block him and force him into an open marriage as long as she can benefit professionally and personally. From a business sense there's little reason for her to have married Tom, as the chances of Tom ascending the ranks and becoming a major head of the company and being the ideal power couple is laughable. Not sure if it made sense politically either, as Tom would have been working for the company her political client resents to the upmost. There has to be some shred of feeling there, but her quest for power stomps all over it.

Either have them go through separation or divorce proceedings or seeing them in family counseling would be an amazing thread for S3.

But yeah, Shiv is a shitty person, a pale (in comparison, not skin tone) female version of Logan, but no killer, and not built to run the company in his eyes.
13352038, no she def feels for Tom

she's a terrible person but she's not completely dead inside. She knows how much Tom loves her and she's operated under the assumption that he will no matter what. She's not only the alpha but she considers him inferior intellectually, and status wise. (basically she can upgrade. he can't) At the same time she genuinely seems to care for him, as much as someone like her can, appreciates how much he has her back. this was the first hint she could actually lose him.

13352228, they were reading over Shiv's business plan like:
