good luck pc policing barbershop conversations
13346207, I get how barbershop convos work
Posted by lightworks, Wed Sep-04-19 12:58 PM
But once you put them on TV on a global platform you would be stupid to think people aren’t gonna have opinions about what you say...
13346232, walk into a barbershop and call someone a fucking idiot then.
Posted by bentagain, Wed Sep-04-19 01:40 PM
they're facilitating a conversation about the perception of being gay in the black community

I will watch the whole thing to get the context and full conversation at some point

...but you jumping all the way out the window...off of Kev asking why...?

that's doing a lot.

someone had said...Lil' Nas X being gay was not a surprise

isn't it a natural question...to ask a relatively young man...successful musician...black man...why at the height of his career he felt compelled to come out

?

I'm assuming this leads into a conversation...but you want to cut film at the sight of Kevin Hart

that's progress?

If you know how barbershop convos go...then you know you'll get all kinds of different perspectives on any topic offered

If you're going to get that offended...to where you call someone a fucking idiot...yeah, like I said, good luck with that.
13346312, ^ ^ ^Came in here makin sense!

especially when it comes to anything about LGBTQ issues.
13346213, He's gaslighting the kid, though.
Posted by Teknontheou, Wed Sep-04-19 01:25 PM
Can't ride for that.
13346220, where?
Posted by atruhead, Wed Sep-04-19 01:30 PM
"he said he was gay, so what?"

sounds progressive to me

"why were you growing up hating it?"

sounds like an attempt to provoke conversation in a talking forum

Dave Chappelle was right about cancel culture being ridiculous, but my opinion remains he spiraled into offensive territory as a middle finger to cancel culture
13346226, LNX says "I was growing up to hate this [being gay]"
Posted by Teknontheou, Wed Sep-04-19 01:36 PM
Then KH says: "hate what?". Then after LNX explicitly says homosexuality, KH says "why?" That "why?" is an implicit refutation of LNX talking about growing up to hate homosexuality, and that being a prevalent part of culture and how most people are raised. It's KH basically calling LNX a liar, which is the gaslighting part.
13346235, that's why LNX hit him with the "cmon now," lol
Posted by Frank Longo, Wed Sep-04-19 01:43 PM
It was such a disingenuous response that Kevin was giving.

btw, imagine being a 20-year-old gay rapper, sitting in a room with THE Kevin Hart, and giving him such a casual and dismissive "cmon now"-- major props to LNX, because if I was in a room with, say, Chris Rock or some other guy who's an icon to people my age, and Chris Rock started questioning in a room full of people what I knew was real, I'd fold like a goddamn card table and give him a "I dunno, maybe you're right."
13346236, here's my interpretation
Posted by atruhead, Wed Sep-04-19 01:44 PM
Kevin Hart was under heat in the past year for gay jokes

his PR/publicist probably saw a good opportunity to have him sit with a gay kid and redeem himself as an understanding supporter

so he played dumb and went with a heavy handed "gay is okay" approach to try erasing what hurt people before

that's not the same as gaslighting
13346237, +, the same context that made LNX hate being gay...shaped Kev's
Posted by bentagain, Wed Sep-04-19 01:46 PM
perspective on not wanting his son to be gay.
13346244, I absolutely believe that'w what KH was going for. Problem is
Posted by Teknontheou, Wed Sep-04-19 01:56 PM
that's most likely not what he really thinks or feels, which is why he fumbled the execution of it. What he was probably trying for was something more like "damn, I'm sorry that that message (anti-gayness/homophobia) was all around you and caused you to feel the way you did. But that message is bs and there's nothing actually wrong with you or who you love". etc. Kevin couldn't pull that off, though. His inner defensiveness kicked in and he wound up using the wrong tone and word choice. It would have been better if he just hadn't said anything (which was probably impossible - everyone there knew the point was to get him and LNX into a direct dialogue over this issue.)
13346247, As I said when he withdrew from hosting the Oscars...

13346221, Nothing wrong here. He's just being simple. NasX is being complex
Posted by PimpTrickGangstaClik, Wed Sep-04-19 01:30 PM
Him and NasX are just approaching this from two different angles.

Kevin is basically saying it doesn't matter that he is gay. That shouldn't change how we feel about him, positively or negatively. Which should be true (right?).

NasX is saying it's bigger than that. His announcement was to help change societal perceptions
13346233, I see it similarly.
Posted by Dr Claw, Wed Sep-04-19 01:42 PM
I think there's an argument that Kevin Hart, who got roasted for making jokes about his own personal gay panic, and using homophobic words on social media is being disingenuous when he says "why should people care that he's gay"

when he likely knows the answer why.

Lil Nas X tells us why.
13346238, He hit him with a “really my nigga?”
Posted by legsdiamond, Wed Sep-04-19 01:48 PM
I think Kevin is trying to be progressive by acting like it shouldn’t be a big deal anymore.

and here is the thing, in Kevin’s world NOW it’s not a big deal. He’s in LA. Prolly spends a lot of time around them and doesn’t see the big deal now but lil dude let him know why.

I honestly saw a really good promo for a good episode that I’m excited to watch. I never heard Lil Nas speak or chop it up and dude sounds grounded as hell for his age.

13346270, yup i saw it as a productive conversation in that sense
Posted by Mynoriti, Wed Sep-04-19 02:34 PM
Lil Nas said don't act brand new, and you know it's not that simple

Posted by tariqhu, Wed Sep-04-19 02:38 PM
disingenuous. Kev's a 40 something talking with a 20 year old. maybe he's thinking that a 20yr old in 2019 may not feel the same pressures that a lot of us old heads grew up with. naïve for sure, but the environments is different today than when Kev was making jokes about it.

13346282, Great observation
Posted by legsdiamond, Wed Sep-04-19 03:18 PM
I always found it funny when Nas X said it was obvious he was gay because he put it in a song...

then I heard the lyrics and literally had no clue how anyone would decipher it based on his lyrics.

all in all.. no one gave a shit and I think that’s kind of what Kevin was trying to play up.
13346308, Wayment. If the environment was so different then versus now why would
Posted by lightworks, Wed Sep-04-19 05:37 PM
there have been a controversy in 2018 about jokes from 2010?

Seems to me the real answer is the environment hasn’t, despite Pose being a popular show on TV now, changed and therefore if Kevin was actually asking that because he thought the environment truly changed then he really didn’t learn a damn thing from the firestorm last year.
13346318, This is a dumb ass question

13346326, Oh please enlighten me as to what I don’t get.
Posted by lightworks, Wed Sep-04-19 08:02 PM
My view is Kevin acting surprised Lil Nas X would announce he is gay is, as folks have said, gaslighting, because he should know thanks to his controversy how difficult things still are for gay folks in America, and yes as Nas implied add an extra layer for gay folks who are also black.

Maybe folks in thread are right, and maybe Kevin acting surprised was an act he was putting on to get some good press given his controversy but he still deserves the heat he’s getting because we don’t know either way if he’s genuinely gaslighting or if he’s just trying to maneuver some good PR.

Honestly neither option is as good as just plain being a genuinely good as person who is accepting of people no matter how they sexually identify, no tricks or stunts at all, which it doesn’t seem like Kevin is capable.
13346354, I don’t think surprised is the right word to describe Kevin’s reaction
Posted by legsdiamond, Thu Sep-05-19 08:21 AM
I think he was saying it shouldn’t be a big deal that he is gay in 2019.

The environment has definitely changed BECAUSE such a big deal was made about jokes in 2010. Jokes many of us had no clue were even made back in 2010. Hell, some people outraged in 2018 prolly laughed at the jokes in 2010.

Point is.. the needle has changed because it wasn’t even a big deal when Nas X announced he was gay. There are a lot more shows than Pose. We have shows and movies with Black gay story lines and it’s not controversial.

The only pushback was because Kevin has tons of fans... and you know what fans are.. fanatic. You don’t really expect a popular figure to lose all his support over a joke 8 years ago that he already apologized for numerous times.
13346322, different environment doesn't mean there's not work to be
Posted by tariqhu, Wed Sep-04-19 07:05 PM
done. but I'd be hard-pressed to believe you think there's been zero progress in acceptance of gay people. everybody aint there yet.

hell, Lil Nas X is at least one example of that. how many folks would've come out in hip hop when Kev was making those jokes? there are folks that came at Lil Nas after he said his piece, but for the most part, it seemed to have blown over.

For Kev, we can't get a good view of him from this short clip.

They handled it all right there. everything else is noise
13346425, Literally nothing to be outraged about in that show.
Posted by bentagain, Thu Sep-05-19 11:43 AM
if this post wasn't made, and the twitter mob didn't already put Kev's head on a spike

...again...

I would have watched that entire episode without ever raising an eyebrow or giving a sideye

I thought the entire episode was a great exchange

Didn't see anything remotely problematic with the exchange between Kev and LNX

...in fact, I think they both probably have a new found level of respect for one another after the conversation...

Unfortunately, Kev was bubblin' and dominated the entire episode

I really found his elitist humor hilarious

But I wanted a more expansive conversation on anxiety

Felt like KLove got overshadowed

Incredibly interested in his story of having the worst time of his life...during a championship run...

Really wanted to hear more about that.

But the Kev vs LNX storyline was some bullshit

Good show though.

13346431, My tone is mad friendly!
Posted by Boogie Stimuli, Thu Sep-05-19 11:57 AM
It's kinda hypocritical to accuse people of not being able to think on their own when you're using someone else's words to speak for yourself, and that might be part of the reason people are responding the way they are.
But anyway, those were my honest thoughts on what the woman said, b/c the histories, the way people find out and thus implications of the issues are vastly different. If this issue is capable of standing on its own, its probably best to let it do so, as one or both of these issues is being disrespected by the comparison. It's cheap and either ignorant or disingenuous.

To the point about Hart, I think he was trying to defend and support LNX but the "why would you hate it" question was silly. Just chill out. It's almost like he was drunk and spouting off without just hearing the kid out first.

Another weird thing about the clip to me is that there's a room full of mostly black men who are all understanding and attentive but they only pan to show the white guy actively listening. It's subtle, but it's registering to people subconsciously. And maybe the whole show takes time to show the rest of them listening, but this is clip they chose to use as marketing, so there's that.
13346434, ...in his defense...and to your point...alot of this is HBO's marketing
Posted by bentagain, Thu Sep-05-19 12:04 PM

but if you recall, the original internet dustup clip for the show

consisted of LeBron speaking on his experience as a teenager and being exposed to YT culutre...and his initial distrust of YT pee poe

the twitterverse ran with that too...on some, LeBron hates YT pee poe bullshit

so to your point, yeah, alot of this faux outrage is the result of HBO's intentional marketing strategy

...and yes, Kev was at least buzzed...if not drunk.

It's not a big deal to be gay in 2019. While there are barriers still being broken and work to be done in the civil rights realm, it's not nearly as taboo as it was even 10 yrs ago.

I've seen multiple commercials with same sex couples...explicitly positioned as couples for the ads. Can't say I recall ever seeing a commercial in this realm prior to maybe 3 yrs ago.

D-Wade's son just got tons of support from him and others about his sexuality.

Taylor Swift performed an ode to the LGBTQ community in her VMA performance, having a prominent gay viral rapper on stage.

Multiple pro football players have come out, most recently Ryan Russell.

There are openly gay politicians in office, hell Chicago's Mayor is a black lesbian.

And while yes, there's still that undercurrent of bigotry floating around, LNX coming out as gay at height of his popularity was risky but not as big of a deal had this been 2005 or something.
13346399, you, and your ilk, are being idiots about this.
Posted by PROMO, Thu Sep-05-19 10:40 AM
Everything Kevin said was actually supporting Lil Nas X. I don't know how people are so dumb as to twist this into some anti-gay shit.

I mean, he literally told Lil' Nas X that "in no way shape or form should you ever have to defend (yourself by saying) 'but guys, this is who i am'" and then he basically says that Lil' Nas X is standing on who he is and is successful and doesn't need to explain himself...THEN Maverick Carter asks Kevin HOW he got to that place and Kev says "I had to get fucked up in life," implying that he made mistakes speaking on being gay in the past and he LEARNED.

Does it get any more pro-gay (or at least pro-Lil-Nas-X-who-is-gay)?

I don't really care about this other stuff.

He had his back fused now. The weird shit tho is he was taken out the car and back to his house while the driver and his girl were still in the car? And then at the house they realized he was more injured/not coherent and called 911? Something odd about it all but glad nobody died and hope all recover, just odd.
13346515, I had thought he was drunk driving & friend took the fall

But TMZ reported the way the friend was rescued he had to have been driving because he had steering wheel impact.

So then it becomes “what innocent friend would leave the scene of a crime with his two friends trapped?”

An either “I’m blackout levels drunk and therefore shouldn’t be looked at as a wack friend or “fuck them friends” type.

I am guessing the former.

Glad everyone is okay.

There was a case here where a driver (with a car full of people) killed a dude on a motorcycle late one night. Originally, the driver was supposed to have be the DD for her intoxicated boyfriend. It turns out, he was behind the one behind the wheel (drunk, of course), and everyone in the car agreed to say the the girlfriend was driving. NYPD pulled the text messages between them, plus surveillance footage from the bars they had been at just before the accident to prove he had been drinking all night. If there's anything remotely like that here, LAPD will do the same.
13346580, No not like that. Like the Scene from that Chris Rock Movie. 5 Mics.

You whisk him away to minimize the pubilicity and drama and liability claims. You also leave someone there to manage everything. Dude standing around would have made it a circus and he didn't abandon them.

I think this is probably what happened. It still sounds low key shady to leave the other people unless someone else from the team stayed with them until the ambulance arrived.
