13342372, Watch out Atlanta, SouthSide is coming for your neck.
Posted by Buddy_Gilapagos, Wed Aug-07-19 03:48 PM
Man this Comedy Central's southside is the funniest black ish I have seen in a long time. Only 2 episodes in, but if it can keep up at this pace, it will be very worthy competition for Atlanta.

To be fair, they are very different shows. Atlanta is more high end, slower pace and artsy, but Southside got joke on top of joke and really seems it was written for us by us.

Come on man, this ish right here:

https://twitter.com/i/status/1158426817998360581

When the dude said, "I am a 50-year-old black man, you know I only got like 10 years left". The joke cut so deep.

If you don't know you heard it here first.

And yes, sadly an effective way to put people on to something new is to compare it favorably to something older.

Posted by EAS, Wed Aug-07-19 11:56 PM
So happy to see his come up. He used to be a writer on Jimmy Fallon. Dude is hella smart. Last time I saw him, we were kids, I thought he was going to be a doctor or lawyer....cut to... he is doing skits on The Tonight Show. I think he has another show coming out too on another network...IFC, I think.

But yeah, like ATL, it feels homegrown and the writers know the city and its people well. The punchlines/jokes don't stop....it keeps hittin' you back to back.

It trips me out because at one point Bashir, Kanye, and I were all on the same bus as kids. Seeing them do there thing at different points makes me proud and the talent that continue to rise out the city is amazing. Despite some of the negative 'statistics', I am hella proud of this city and look forward to seeing more of my experiences/stomping grounds getting put out there for the world to view.

I stumbled into this over the weekend. It is wonderfully absurd.

Charade and Time Loop should be enough to earn it a 2nd season. I was laughing out loud but for real. And yeah, it's aging/old black people stuff. I had a blast.

Posted by Buddy_Gilapagos, Wed Aug-14-19 11:41 AM
It had a lot going for it. I will say that the show did seem a bit, underdeveloped. Leads were awesome but they weren't great at developing the motley crew of other characters (epsecially women characters) and b storylines were weak. I think given more time all that would have developed.

Compare that to Southside which out the gate has baller mom and crooked hood chick cop which are two of the funniest black women characters in comedy I've seen in a minute.

I've never seen the Ratchet Corrupt Lady Cop before. And she plays it in type a way you pull for her.

Even the Tom Black Cop is kind of interesting once you see his homelife. Never seen before a black character who was a Tom not necessarily out of malice, but because they trying to hard to be color-blind (like his wife). It's funny because I know those types of Toms.

Lots of laughs but it is kind of falling into a typical sitcom formula of an A nd B storyline that's resolved in 30 minutes.

The Drug Dealer Dude is starting to sound a lot like Darius from Atlanta.

Still a big fan of the show though and enjoy it but would love to see an ongoing season-long storyline that is pushed a little further every episode.

yeah. he is kinda veering off into darius territory. and there's only one darius. i still like the character, though.

i think that's where the ATL comparison breaks down. i think Southside is what it is and at it's best its a 30 minute excuse to fire off mad jokes and crazy inside cultural references. i'm more than good w/ that.
