13342195, Are you happy with the state of Black Hollywood? Posted by 81 DUN, Tue Aug-06-19 04:21 PM
I’m happy that Master P is talking about taking control, creating and owing our projects. But, he’s creating I Got The Hook Up 2.
I like that we have films that are not typical (Us, Last Black Man In SF)
But we still end up with the Slavery/Civil rights/bio pic that were boxed into. Harriet Tubman, The Best of Enemies.
Out of the 52 Friday’s we have a year there should be at least 20 major black films to get excited about.

13342220, Yeah I hear you on that. With all that goes on in Hollywood though Posted by Atillah Moor, Tue Aug-06-19 06:57 PM
maybe it's more harm than good idk

13342227, Major releases are meh... Posted by legsdiamond, Tue Aug-06-19 07:30 PM
but these TV shows are awesome.
Snowfall Queen Sugar Green Leaf Atlanta Insecure Blackish
All flames.
Also finding a few movies on Netflix that have been good. Not great but good enough.

13342285, I remember when every black film was a major event. Posted by Buddy_Gilapagos, Wed Aug-07-19 10:55 AM
Like Everyone showed up the first weekend of DO The Right Thing and COming to America.
SO I can't complain about only 20 decent movies a year.
At any rate, I think 5-7 must see a year would be a more realistic number.

13342390, nothing comes to mind... Posted by Trinity444, Wed Aug-07-19 06:17 PM
it might be because of my age tho

13342392, Why is there a "But" before the statement about I Got The Hook UP 2? Posted by NoDrawls McGraw, Wed Aug-07-19 07:12 PM
You have an air of disdain and disgust with the notion of P creating this sequel.
Why is that? (I have an idea but I'm hoping you prove me wrong)

13342403, Cuz I looked at the trailer and it was terrible Posted by 81 DUN, Thu Aug-08-19 02:28 AM
I still might buy it on Amazon just to support his movement but nah I couldn’t get down with that one. I like the first one

13342504, Fair enough, I ain't mad at you G. You proved me wrong. Posted by NoDrawls McGraw, Thu Aug-08-19 03:24 PM

13342416, it feels real low budget Posted by naame, Thu Aug-08-19 09:38 AM
and the celebrity worshipping within the black community is at an all time high.
America has imported more warlord theocracy from Afghanistan than it has exported democracy.

13342424, Taking control and owning your projects don't mean shit.... Posted by Airbreed, Thu Aug-08-19 10:39 AM
...unless you have the talent and professional skill set to WRITE and SHOOT a quality film. Otherwise, you'll end up owning a movie no one wants to see or cares about. Period.
Plus, I think most Hollywood black filmmakers are still treating black audiences as a monolithic group with the slavery/SJW/cross dressing comedy narratives.
I still haven't seen black hollywood go beyond that with storytelling in sci-fi, fantasy and adventure. Peele is doing good on the horror/psychological narratives. But he's still struggling with too many plot holes in his films. Once he's able to reconcile with that, Peele will be a force to be reckoned with.
Fuqua and DuVernay are probably the best at what they've been doing in Black Hollywood right now.
But as long as hollywood keeps giving money to people like tyler perry to shoot vapid, low brow, chitlin circuit movies, they'll continue to be seen as the standard, which is shameful in 2019.

13342448, I Agree I'm Still Waiting For Them To "Get Out" Of This Period Posted by Dj Joey Joe, Thu Aug-08-19 11:50 AM

Black Hollywood don't need to always have to make a so-called "black film" to be considered made by black hollywood, Black Panther & Get Out was a good example of what black hollywood can do if they stop trying so hard to make Madea & Wayans Brothers movies, yeah I love comedy movies but so times these movies try waaayyy to hard.
I also sometimes we feel that black people have to been in front of the camera for it to be a Black Hollywood type movie, our minds have been conditioned to what someone said how something should be so much that now we don't think outside the box anymore.

13342495, No I’m talking about movies in theaters. Posted by 81 DUN, Thu Aug-08-19 02:43 PM
I recognize that television industry is doing a good job. I believe it’s a big difference. Movies still represent American culture in a major way
|
13342528, culturally, movies and "tv" are on equal footing Posted by Damali, Thu Aug-08-19 06:08 PM
and i put TV in quotations because Netflix and Hulu, et al are not a part of the television industry.
you do not need a television to stream content. the "television" is almost obsolete...in 5-10 more years, they won't exist. Most of us watch shows on a monitor..
does your apparatus at home have an antenna that receives a television signal or does it come from a cable box? just saying...

maybe even Hobbs and Shaw and The Kitchen should count...
Little and Shaft were fine but under supported
and it always annoyed me that Lion King is all animals

13342712, I stopped going to the movies Posted by Musa, Sun Aug-11-19 07:51 AM
I don't support these industries that spread all kinds of subversive propaganda against Black people.
