13337723, Sudan: anyone have AFRICAN's email?
Posted by akon, Tue Jun-11-19 01:35 PM
sorry to blast this out.

i thought I did but cant find anything.
mainly want to find out if he's in Khrt... and if him and family are ok.

there's one more sudani here i believe. i'm forgetting username tho.
13337726, oh and if anyone's curious
Posted by akon, Tue Jun-11-19 01:47 PM
both our countries are fucked.
so there's that.

we (s.sudan) have already gone over the edge. <- this is really a lost cause
sudan seems to be teetering.... it would be really bad.
13337730, is there a source where i can read about current events there?
Posted by GriftyMcgrift, Tue Jun-11-19 02:03 PM
im always wondering about the plight of folks in the Sudan but dont seem to see alot of news coming out of there.
13337740, the bbc has been convering this
Posted by akon, Tue Jun-11-19 02:35 PM
sudantribune.com for more localized news.

its depressing though. all of it
13337750, thank you!
Posted by GriftyMcgrift, Tue Jun-11-19 03:06 PM

being who i am and where i live i cannot even fathom what people's situation is like over there

but id like to try and understand atleast. it feels like an important thing developing some kind of empathy for people that are in unthinkable circumstances

i feel similarly about whats happening in Mexico but i digress
13337780, i spoke with a friend in Khartoum today
Posted by akon, Tue Jun-11-19 05:49 PM
its not safe. that's pretty much the bottom line
they dont really have internet access, either- so there's that too.

i dont know if it's localized to *some* parts of Khrtm- cant really get a sense of the scale of things.
and its hard to determine from the news (like if you read about south sudan you'd think its war everywhere when its really not - but you'd have to know the country to *get* this)

hoping for the best though.

13337781, i appreciate your personal insight
Posted by GriftyMcgrift, Tue Jun-11-19 06:10 PM
you probably have people directly affected by this shit so thank you
13337732, I'm curious. Can you tell us more?

Whatever you feel like writing about it.
13337739, well, sudan finally got rid of bashir

(who is a terrible human being and deserves a horrible fate)

through mass protests, demonstrations etc
i think we were all hoping for a peaceful transition to civilian rule

but...they set up a military council to run the country and then elections to be held in 9 months
there's been negotiations btw the protesters and the council
these broke down...
the head of the military council is an awful human being
(if you know anything about the militia in darfur - he was the head for a long time -
these are the people in khartoum right now
and the ones responsible for all these deaths

its completely unsafe
and with Sudan- things can escalate without warning

----
s.sudan
is just fucked
and talking about it just gets me angry
a friend of mine got sentenced to 15 yrs for made up charges, today
his friend- 2 years for speaking to a voice of america reporter (
my lil cuz is also in jail.... for a few months now (since november)
because - well they tell us it's because she's a WITNESS to a case that national security is bringing against...
tbh it doesnt make sense at all- she's never been brought in front of a judge (because there is no law in juba anymore)

--
its funny cause yesterday i found myself missing being in juba
and actually thinking about going in july.
i'd be crazy to.

13337756, Peace to you and your peoples, Akon. This is a lot to deal with.
Posted by flipnile, Tue Jun-11-19 03:30 PM
Appreciate the response. Going to do some reading on this tonight.
13338133, Shaun King spoke in it this morning
Posted by legsdiamond, Thu Jun-13-19 12:24 PM
He made a good point.

The military leaders are the ones who committed war crimes for Bashir, so chances are they will do the same thing or worse to stay in power.

Peace yo
13395493, Pretty much. Bashir may be gone, but his party still run the show.

Therefore, don't expect much to change.
13395517, wow.. an update
Posted by akon, Fri Jul-24-20 07:35 PM
not sure why this came back around but....

>a friend of mine got sentenced to 15 yrs for made up charges,
>today

said friend was killed about 3 or so weeks ago
he started a movement against the government, and one week later... he's dead
we still really don't know what happened.
he was killed by local folk...after the army basically told them he was a threat.
i still cant believe all this and cant even begin to explain this.

>his friend- 2 years for speaking to a voice of america
>reporter

his friend: he and his family just got asylum in the united states (yesterday?).

>my lil cuz is also in jail.... for a few months now (since
>november)

my lil cuz got released... no charges, nothing.

so... yea south sudan is *still* fucked

13337784, latest i heard was the internet was blacked out the past week or so
Posted by Riot, Tue Jun-11-19 07:03 PM
so no info getting out of the country to the outside world as to whats going on
but also preventing or slowing down protesters from strategizing or just being informed

but apparently text and cell voicecalls still work

crazy. things went from good (looking up) to bad in a blink

not to mention seeing darfur, south sudan, and mali back in the news for all the wrong reasons....

anybody know why the post from yesterday (apparently) get deleted?
13337786, i dont know how to process it all, tbh
Posted by akon, Tue Jun-11-19 07:29 PM

>not to mention seeing darfur, south sudan, and mali back in

>

its overwhelming. i cry a lot... it doesn't help

...and Cameroon. no one talks about cameroon. i have friends from the english speaking part- they are hurting too. some folk i know trying to get congress to at least *say* something.

13337789, there are a couple ambazonia groups on facebook
Posted by Riot, Tue Jun-11-19 08:06 PM
they had a internet blackout too. violence flares up then quiets down.
but yea shtt has to rise above +expected level of devastation+ up to +horrific atrocity+ level for the world to take notice.

and then the lack of response by AU or even any neighboring governments is beyond frustrating.

some times u gotta check out just for selfcare/mental health purposes tho

i see some south sudanese saying that khartoum is just experiencing the conflict that the rest of the nation(s) felt for the past 20 years. not in a 'u deserve it' way, but like - u ignored everything else going on around other parts of the country for so long, now it has landed at your doorstep

13338129, the au suspended sudan
Posted by akon, Thu Jun-13-19 12:10 PM

>and then the lack of response by AU or even any neighboring

i'm not exactly sure what that's supposed to do though.
13338128, still asking
Posted by akon, Thu Jun-13-19 12:08 PM
any info?

are there any remaining okafricans on here?
13338142, Hey sis

Me and the family are doing good Alhamdulilah.
These past few days have been an uneasy stalemate.
Internet is out except for a few places , so when I do get access check my mail and news from the outside world.
I don’t even know where to start typing about this situation but I’ll try and write something coherent.
Thank you for the concern and well wishes from everyone.
We family.
13338146, Im so glad you are well!!
Posted by akon, Thu Jun-13-19 01:30 PM
first, inbox me another way to get in touch with you so i don't blast this out again.
thanks so much for letting me know how you are.

i have a couple of friends in Khrtm so its been a bit overwhelming
(my mom's in darfur-unamid- they havent been able to get supplies for a couple of days)

*just* found out a friend that i thought was in nairobi has been in Khrt since the protests started
and honestly... i dont think he should be there (he and his sister have been on those natnl security lists for ever.)

>I don’t even know where to start typing about this situation

south sudan is equally fucked, tbh. except we are just going along with it
(arbitrary arrests and detention, natnl security kidnapping people from nairobi to juba now, smh)

>We family.

keeping you and yours in my thoughts.
let me know if you need anything.
13338261, yo!

Rihanna and George Clooney posted and put out statements to draw attention to what's going on

But Similar to what akon said about AU, I don't know how effective the "call your congressman" tactic is
13338327, What's good bro?
Posted by flipnile, Fri Jun-14-19 10:54 AM
Glad you're ok.

Been trying to check your IG for updates.

A little over a year later.

All the pessimistic predictions have happened.
Infighting in the civilian government. An uneasy stalemate with the military and militias.
Tribal skirmishes.Economic collapse. Lack of vision, planning and motherfucking priorities.
The world bank is calling for austerity measures (as usual).Covid 19. Collapse of the healthcare system (which barely existed).
Previous regime trying to trip everything up.Rebel groups playing hard ball at negotiating for peace.Government trying to play the rebel factions against each other.
Gloom and doom.
This is why I still believe democracy will not work for us ever.
These fucking ideological political parties( political Islam,Communism,Baathist etc) are content to send us to hell as long as they get to be in control.
I think it’s time to bounce.
At least for my kids sake.
13395497, be well...
Posted by Trinity444, Fri Jul-24-20 04:27 PM
I’ve been wondering what’s been up with you. My heart is with you...
13395516, Damn man ... wishing the best for you and your family
Posted by snacks, Fri Jul-24-20 07:29 PM
... during this time
13395518, hey fam.....its (possibly) worse in the south
Posted by akon, Fri Jul-24-20 07:43 PM
and isn't that something.
we are both fucked.

i cant even read news about south sudan anymore.

my friend (kerubino) was killed a few weeks ago
he started a movement against the government....
went to lakes state to set up his base (the first place i lived (rumbek) in when i first went to south sudan)
the army basically told the local folk that he was a threat and so... they killed him.
there is video online where they talk about this... and its so hard to watch because.... damn we are lost
i dont even understand what he was thinking.... he was pardoned by the president last year and i assumed he left the country (as he should've)
and the way i found out all this was really fucked up.

we also have covid. all our 5(!) vice presidents caught it..but somehow none of them died (i was praying for this)
it was recently the 9th anniversary of our independence..and i was thinking about how i always made sure i was in juba, at mausoleum with everyone celebrating
and this year....nothing could take me to south sudan. nothing.
i miss everything about juba, but the juba i miss does not exist (same is true for all of south sudan),

i would say... leave if you can.
the Sudan will always hold a special place in our hearts
but the Sudan we hope for, wish for and yearn for... does not exist.
