13318243, A Rant: Performance Reviews
Posted by BlakStaar, Thu Mar-07-19 03:29 PM
My manager (“Boss J”), who unfortunately became my new supervisor last year through an undeserving promotion, just came up to me and told me he’d try to squeeze in a “super quick” performance review THIS AFTERNOON. He said we’d probably hold the meeting “out in the hallway.”

Why?

He’s going to be off tomorrow.

And though he doesn’t realize it, I’ve learned through HR that Friday is the absolute last day for managers to complete them.

Here’s the thing. These reviews were supposed be done back in mid-February, if not earlier, but management has not made them a priority. I asked management, including my previous boss (“Boss E”) and Boss J (who still reports to “Boss E”) for clarification about review deadlines and I received two contradictory responses.

I finally reached out to HR last Friday to get legitimate facts and was told managers, company-wide, must finish the in-person evals by tomorrow, Friday, March 8.

I’ve been waiting on Boss J or my former direct supervisor, Boss E, to send an Outlook invite, and now I’m finally getting an update about a review at the 11th hour?!! I’ve heard other coworkers say they haven’t received their reviews yet either.

My company typically gives out the standard bullshit corporate 3% raise. Our online payroll and benefits portal allows us to see our upcoming paychecks about 48 hours in advance. Based on what I just peeped for tomorrow’s paycheck, I’m getting another bullshit single digit raise.

Am I tripping for thinking my manager has handled this unprofessionally? A performance review should be formalized and should not be held “out in the hallway” where people, including our coworkers, are walking to and from the bathroom and elevator.

Last year, when I had two direct bosses in the same year, I received an Outlook invite and a talk inside Boss E’s private office with Boss E and Boss J.

What do y’all think?

And have you had performance reviews lately? How’d that shit go?
13318255, yes, you should be pissed.

that's way outta pocket to have a review in the hallway. I would've objected because the very reasons you mentioned. no privacy.

my new manager is great.....mostly. I joined her team late late year. have no experience on this side of the business. learning a ton.

all of the stuff in our review system was from my previous role. there's not a single item related to my current job since I got on team after the deadlines for inputs.

.

anyway, the review went well. she had a lot of good words for me. I've never been surprised by a review, but this was pretty close. she was late getting to me, but she worked it out

got the 3% raise, but these calls are really to discuss bonus money from the previous year. the review, raise, and bonus talk all happen on this call.

I'd request a private meeting. If he insists on doing it informally in the hallway, I think that would be something to take up with HR. Just know that might reflect badly on you with your new boss if he's vindictive.

My last couple reviews have been pretty good and I'm interested in what it would take to reach the next level but the company hasn't defined it yet. The current people at the next level are good but they're either relatives of the partners or people that have probably been promised a promotion quietly.

They've incentivized me to stay in other ways but not having a clear road to the next level has me contemplating going out on my own again or teaming up with some other friends that run similar businesses and have asked me to help them expand into my field.
13318261, that sucks

no way to perform an evaluation. at least someone has set a deadline that the managers need to abide by. my old job would set wish dates. they would hope to get them done by this date. months would pass after the date and nada. you would have to keep pushing them.

doesnt make your situation any better though.

this job seems to be pretty on point with them. the raise itself is pretty standard. it would be nice if it was better.

that is completely dialed in type of BS.. at least they can't lean on you when they pull that kind of crap but good luck ever getting anywhere in that type of environment.

Wouldn't you want it to waste as little of your time as possible??
